Hi guys!

I wanted to give you a quick rundown on what involvement Customer Support takes regarding defrauding/scamming. Let’s look at the two parts of this:

1. We do not reimburse wealth lost to other players for any reason if it is outside of the Black Lion Trading Post. This is because Customer Support can not duplicate wealth. With the volume of requests coming in we alone would damage the economy if we were to restore wealth lost when trading takes place.

2. We terminate accounts permanently for defrauding (scamming). If you are found to make a deal to trade (say, sword for gold) and not hold up your end we will investigate and terminate. If you are the victim of a scam you should submit a support ticket and provide what you lost and the time and date as accurately as you recall. This is usually all we need to research the event but we will ask you if we need more info. You do have a right to know the outcome of these investigations but be aware these take us a few days to resolve.

Please be sure to include the full details of your trade via game chat (any channel is fine) in Guild Wars 2
We absolutely must be able to see the deal being made to find guilt. Do not use voice chat software or other means to communicate while making a sale/trade.

Again; this will help us terminate accounts that are cheating other players but will not result in a recovery of your losses.

Please understand that you are allowed to trade outside of the BLTP – but you will not receive replacements for lost items or gold. The same goes for selling dungeon runs. CS will not suspend or terminate you for selling runs. We will, however, take action if you take payment and not fulfill your end of the bargain.

I’ll watch this thread for questions and clarify where needed. Thanks!

Thank you very much for this information.

I’ve seen threads asking if ANet does anything to scammers. While showing official policy helps, this is much more useful.

Hey,

with your new dungeon system people can kick you out and take the instance when you wanne sell it.

My question, how do you act with those guys? At the moment, I wont take the risk of being kicked and giving them a free dungeon path. But if you say, you will perma ban those people, maybe not the first time, but the second time they do that, then I’d take the risk on selling dungeons again.

Now, in regards to getting booted -

It is not allowed and we will take action against accounts we find doing this. This is monitored in-game but if you are able to report please do so as thousands of eyes are better than a team of GMs.

The fact that there are people doing this simply sucks and needs to be corrected and I want to assure you that my team actively takes issues like these to production to raise awareness (as do other devs that frequent the forums). I have been approached by multiple leads on ways to correct and curb this behavior and the conversation is happening.

I read that quote as if someone boots you from a dungeon without reason (The ability to kick is in the game for a reason.) Please report they will take the necessary action to correct and curb this behavior. The action taken depends on the situation, circumstances, and habits of said player doing the kicking.

Correct. This is in regards to the recent increase in players joining a group in a pair; booting the legit players at a boss to troll or holding the party at ransom (Pay or we’ll kick). That’s a behavior we’re not cool with.

What if someone didn’t make clear they were selling a dungeon run in their LFG, or merged your own LFG in which you are not asking for runs, and suddenly at the end threaten you to kick you if you don’t pay, then claim you knew it was a paid run?

Hello Michael, thanks for starting this thread.

If we are allowed to trade items outside of the BLTP, effectively bypassing Evon’s tax, why do we still (after two years) not have a way to securely trade items, as seen in most other MMOs, a popup window where you can see and double check any items up for trade (including gold). The trade only actually happens once both players confirmed and accepted. There should also be an option to deny incoming trade invites right away, to prevent being harassed.

So do we have to provide visual proof or can we just report it and you investigate the chat logs?

Also, is this situation sufficient proof to send?

I invite the other person into the party, and I type out the details of the deal:

Vol – “I, Vol.7601 agree to trade my (1)Dusk for OtherPerson.9999’s (1) Dawn + 200g. The trade will be completed immediately. Do you agree?”
Other Person " Yes I agree"

The dungeon runner is responsible for making sure all the players in the party are there for the service. They should be starting a run with a full party to prevent hotjoins in the middle of a run. It doesn’t matter if their LFG is misleading if they confirm with every player. If they don’t confirm that they are selling a run with each party, then they would be seen as abusing kick function and the report function. This also prevents players from pretending not to understand to scam a run.

Deals are made up front. We don’t pay for a movie after it’s over.

This person wouldn’t be making a deal, they’d be holding the run ransom. That’s an offense.

We don’t use screenshots when investigating ’cause Photoshop is a thing. Our logs are sufficient as long as you can narrow down the timeframe.

The above example would be sufficient for reporting. But please remember that it’s really not a good idea to make such a valuable trade. I see tickets everyday where someone loses a legendary or piles of gold this way.

The reason for it not existing is because they do want you to use a tp. It means you pay taxes and that is a big gold sink in the economy. All they are saying is they don’t want scammers in their game, so if you are willing to risk losing out on money to bypass taxes go ahead, when something goes wrong you will lose out. However Anet will make sure that person cannot do the same to other players by banning them. This is not to encourage p2p trading, you still do it at your own risk.

I am curious why the guy I reported for scamming arah runs is still playing the game. If your chat logs are sufficient then why is he still there. He admitted it in chat. He scammed other people not just me. I don’t care about the money. I care that he scammed me and other people. I knew the risk. BUT if you say you ban people for scamming then why is he still in game? Also in the customer support email I was told I would not be notified of any punishment or anything regarding the incident. Is this new policy?

I’m sure this has been asked before, but I don’t see it in this thread— Why don’t you include a player-to-player trade option? I feel like that would solve a handful of scamming issues.

Michael, one of the things that I’d like to see addressed that I think would really help with people joining and kicking is improvements to the “Block” list in game.

If I have someone blocked, then why can they:
1. Join my LFG party
2. See my character location & name via their friends/blocked list
3. See my guild/say/party chat

I think that improvements to the Block list is something that would be immensely useful to help prevent griefing.

They want you to trade in the BLTP. That’s what it is there for – to provide a secure way to trade with people you don’t know.

That we have the ability to trade outside the BLTP is just so we have a way to gift people we know/are teamed with (giving potions to people for dungeon runs – such as outlaw slaying potions for CM – is an example). The fact that it can allow sales that get around the BLTP is just a side effect.

They at very least need to fix #2. That opens people up to griefing if the blocked person was actively harassing.

I think the current block system is just a chat filter on the client side, however. That’s why it’s somewhat anemic.

This is an absolutely fair response and I’m so glad to hear official word on it. It makes sense that lost items can’t be restored and it’s perfectly reasonable to ask players to accept that risk if they should choose to trade on the gray market. It’s more than enough to know that Anet will take action to purge their game community of scumbags who try to cheat others, and that those who even think of scamming will reconsider, knowing that those actions will not go unpunished.

Not true. I had perfect proof, that a guy scammed me 600g (look my account and tickets up, you’ll see). You said you would take appropriate actions.

I had no answer ever after that, but the player went online again about 2 months after the incident, he is now often online, even trolling me (playing innocent still, but without show of guilt at all). For all I know this guy was never banned (not even temporary) and the money was not terminated. I suggest you do a little more then big words please. Proof it. Ban the person i’m talking about. Screenshots and everything has been send to you in the past. Crystal clear scam. If that’s permanent banhammer, then the player should not be online in the last months.

No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option

I think bringing up past incindents is a bit difficult since they now had a change of policy and who know how long they store their game logs for, think of this as if you encounter anything in the future you can take action and find out what will happen to the person.

They don’t WANT you to bypass the 15% fee (for economic reasons) and have no intention of making it easier for player to do so. I have yet to understand why those that continually request a player to player trade feature can’t grasp this concept.

BLTP gets you access to EVERYTHING you could get via player to player trade and is an invaluable gold sink for the entire game. These leaves you with 2 reasons to want a player 2 player trade:

  1. To Scam an unwitting player for a lower than market value price.
  2. To bypass the NEEDED 15% fee (gold sink).

If you want a discount trade with someone you trust, the mail trade is there….use at your own risk (the actual subject of this thread).

For the record, we actually have a really awesome community full of amazing people. Before this patch hit, I rented out my minis so people could get their achievements. In all, I rented to about 50 people and made about 7,000 gold, and didn’t get scammed once. Best of all, I made friends with a bunch of new, amazing, trustworthy individuals.
