Hmm, I’m not having all that much problems as you guys, maybe because I have the latest MacBook Pro? Also, I there’s a little guide a friend of mine sent to me to increase my fps:

“This guide will show you how to take advantage of your Video Ram to instantly boost your fps on the mac client. I’ve been wondering why my mac with good hardware was getting such terrible fps especially in zergs. With this edit I went from average of about 20 fps to about 30 or more fps in LA. In PVE i’m seeing up to 50 compared to about 35 before the edit.
What you will do is edit your config file which defaults your video ram to 256 and change it to the proper amount of video ram your mac has.
(For reference I am using the latest OS X El Capitan)
Step 1: Find out how much video ram your mac has.

  • click the Apple menu, go to About This Mac
  • click system report
  • click graphics/displays in the left-hand column
  • find your VRAM (Total) – this is what you will enter in the gw2 config file, mine was 1024 (four times the amount set by default in the config file!)
Step 2: Edit your GW2 config file
  • close Guild Wars 2 if it is running
  • go to your applications folder and right click the Guild Wars 2 app
  • click show package contents
  • open Contents>Resources>Preferences
  • open the config file in TextEdit
  • find the line that says “VideoRam” = “256” and change the 256 to your VRAM (Total) that you found in step 1
  • find the line that says “AGPVertexRam” = “128” and change the 128 to half of your VRAM (Total)
  • save and close the file and reopen the Guild Wars 2 app
  • enjoy the extra fps!!!
Hopefully this guide helps anyone else with a Mac who, like me, was frustrated with their low fps!
Note: You may have to redo this after every patch, not sure yet." -Reddit

Hope this helps!

I’m in the same boat. I’m currently using the highest end default Air and I’m doing a lot better than my 5 year old windows laptop as far as function goes. It gets a little laggy in WvW and the controls take some getting used to (I had to re-bind command-Q…).

But that’s mostly muscle memory problems.

I do notice that accessing the trading post is a problem for me as well.

My trick is to right click an item in my inventory to choose “sell at TP” and it works 90% of the time to quicly load, and I can access the gem store from there.

Otherwise I’d say 80-85% of the time opening up the TP directly won’t load it.

^^^This deserves a sticky. My client still crashed in Lion’s Arch, but the performance was night and day. I have 4096MB of VRAM. To think the game wasn’t even using 10% of that is utterly insulting. Macs have pretty decent hardware, game developers shouldn’t be shy about using it.

Everyone has the application support folder. Your mac could not function without that folder. On certain versions of OS X, however, the folder is invisible.

1. Open finder.
2. Now look up the top of your screen at the menu bar. One of the items in the menu bar is the “Go” menu.
3. Hold down the alt/option key on your keyboard and click “Go” (keep holding it down). As long as you’re holding down the option key “Library” will appear in the drop down menu for “Go”.
4. Click Library, this will open the library folder for your user account in finder.
5. Then find the application support folder in the library folder (it should be in alphabetical order and therefore up the top).
6. Once you’re inside the application support folder find the folder titled “Guild Wars 2”.
7. Drag that folder to the trash and emtpy it.

Now when you start GW2 it will rebuild the application support folder and recompile the launcher. That should hopefully fix your problems.

Tried wvw and crashed very quickly. How now, Anet? Give us the good word on how you intend to fix this!

There is a word for intentionally selling people a broken product, I think. They knew the client was broken; they had to know because it took about 20 mins of testing on a mac client to find the issue.

That issue has existed since GW1 (which is one instance where you do really realise that GW2 is built on GW1). I think the way I always got it to stop was by double tapping forward, or by going into the keybind settings and figuring out which key sets your character to auto-run, and try tapping that when they keep moving and see if that stops them?

This. All of this.

I’m on the highest end late 2013 Macbook Pro and I really don’t feel like I should be forced to play on the lowest possible settings just to get some figment of respectable FPS. Even then, I still get horrendous stutters and drops whenever I even try to get a better camera angle during a fight.

Now with HoT, I crash out every time there’s something I need to be staying for. Verdant Brink, Dragon Stand, etc.

ArenaNet please fix this kitten. It’s gone on long enough.

Hello,

We know the Cider wrapper isn’t the greatest. One of the reasons we don’t tend to respond to a lot of Mac specific posts is because an overwhelming majority of them are shared with Windows users. I do want to assure you all that we are actively fixing bugs on all clients. Some are quick to fix, some take a fair bit of time. Please try to be patient and keep submitting those reports!

Thanks!

This makes me angry. They’re gonna ignore us till we all cave in and end up buying PCs just to play their kittening game.

To be fair, the Forum Moderators are not developers and I am pleased that they deleted that rude person’s ignorant comment.

It’s the weekend and I doubt the developers are at work. I don’t know what else they can say that has not been said already, or at least until they have something concrete to offer us. They have acknowledged that the Mac version is bad. That is a step forward as far as I am concerned because (hopefully) that means they are obliged to make it better.

I think the best we can do is keep on nagging at them. Keep this thread alive and show them that there are a lot of unhappy Mac users that would like their game to work properly.

Did you try the fix noted above?

I noted a massive boost to how “smooth” the game is. The game insists fps is the same as it ever was, but the game runs a lot smoother now, night and day difference. The culprit being that the default settings only utilize 256MB of Video RAM.

I didn’t play too much today, maybe 2 hours at most. But I didn’t crash once, and even stuck around long enough to nab the chest contents after a boss fight. In fairness, the boss was nearly dead and only lasted about 3 minutes, but at least it didn’t kick me right before the thing died like all the other times.

Bump for an official Anet reply, guys, we will keep bumping this thread up until you give us your plan for the MAC client and give us a best course of action.

Please, moderators, go to your managers, get the info up to the people in charge and give us a meaningful reply, even if that reply is a wait time for a planned update of simply telling us that well, it’s the way it is and it won’t change.

Just tell us what to expect so we can make our own plans and hopefully find a way to play the game correctly because right now, the Mac community is completely crippled and leaving us in this position without any reply is the worse way of dealing with the issue.

Yes forum moderator not devs. All they can do is moderate forum. Maybe we should send PM to forum specialist and ask them to send message to Anet say that Mac customer want more information about what goes on with Mac client. Forum specialist suppose to make report to send Anet every week about topic player talk about.

Flat out disgusted at the blatant disregard for us Mac users and the dev team at this point. Cannot even go in to EOTM without crashing once every 15 minutes. Pathetically done starting to really regret my purchase of this expansion the content is great but the support for Mac is atrocious. Not to mention we just purchased the expansion for the wife. If they do not address this soon will be pursuing full refunds for both expansions and just move on to something with a better Mac support team.

Yah, I’m waiting to see what they do. But if nothing changes, just on the fact that they don’t give mac users any support, and that they try to bury us, I’m going to more than likely move to a different MMO. Probably wait for the mac client for FFXIV online. it will be using middleware to apparently, but at least they said there going to be dedicated to constantly trying to improve the client and make it better, and they will have SUPPORT for it.

Either way I’m getting close to moving on to another MMO and getting my money back. Rather disappointed in anet.

Uhhh… That’s an awful idea. Because… they already released their mac client back in July with Heavensward. It, like GW2, was powered by Cider. It was so so awful that they canned it and just offered everyone refunds. There was a whole lot of press about it. Was quite the screw up. When I say awful I mean just really really awful. At least GW2 is somewhat playable on OS X… Sort of.

I’m running GW2 on my 2010 Mac Pro desktop, I’ve upgraded the graphics card to AMD Radeon HD 7xxx 3072 MB, and I’ve got 2 × 2.4 GHz quad-core, and 20 GB of RAM.

I get crashes almost constantly around any meta event for HoT. I’ve taken to partying up because that’s the only way I can get back into the same map and complete the event. I don’t understand why it’s been 3 years and we’re still Beta, still Cider, and still neglected. Why won’t Anet just spend the time and effort to give us a client that doesn’t suck or require us to make a bootcamp partition just for the sake of the game?

I don’t want a tweaked game so I crash every 30 minutes, I want a client that will run in a stable fashion on current content!

Still crash constantly in large group events and the new areas and way more than I used to in the old areas doing solo content. This is on unacceptably lowest graphic settings. I don’t expect tot be able to do ultra settings, but moderate ones like I used to use seem to be the sweet spot for what one could sell as a functional mac client (wrapper).

Reading the reddit post from one of the devs, it looks like mac is not even on their radar and is not tested. They said that 94% of the players are on windows 64 bit. Are there really so few mac users? I find it hard to believe since mac has a pretty big market share, especially in the us. Even so, if the remaining 6% is 2% other and maybe 4% mac, that still is about 280k mac users if they claim 7 million accounts. Those are a lot of customers to disregard and toss aside.

Would love some real communication.

Yes you are correct, but in yoshida’s statement following that event, he explained it all out, and then on top of the full refunds went on to further explain that they had then hired outside help (engineers and such specialized in mac), and that they would only re release it when it worked.

And that their mac client (yes a cider port) would be worked on continuously, receiving both normal updates, and middleware updates. So I’m just waiting to see how it will perform when they re release it, and ill decide from their, some cider ports can work very well. Not to mention he said they were going to work towards making use of the new “Metal” in mac, to make the clients performance difference hopefully close to none.

Unlike arena net they instantly took steps to make up for their mistake and to re assure the mac customer base, and to give them all the information on what they were planning to do very quickly.

Much better than what anet is doing.

Cider can’t make use of Metal. He was incredibly misguided when he said that. At the same time he also talked about Macs adopting DX12… Which is quite clearly not true. He also talked about how OpenGL is incredibly (30%) inferior to DirectX. That’s also not at all remotely true, the PS4 (and 3) use OpenGL after all. That was also months and months ago. It seems like they’ve abandoned any hope of that. And despite hiring outside help, the port was still going to be a cider port. There’s only so much you can do with that.

Solution: Stop using cider start using the tools mac gives you for programming (free). You drop the code in run the debugger, figure out whats not working and hire a programmer who spent the week or two to learn SWIFT and fix the broken parts.

Cider makes it impossible to figure out whats going wrong. Start with clean code. Mac ppl are looking for games to play. Invest in them you won’t be sorry.

One more thing if your running Lion or above your 64bit… they don’t make 32bit versions of the OS after Lion.

That’s kinda like telling someone to “Just hire someone who’s worked at Boeing for two weeks to strap a jet engine to your car and it’ll go faster”.

Swift is not a hard language to learn (as far as those things go), but, among other issues, there’s no way to automatically convert the code that’s already been written from whatever language they used (probably C++) to Swift. Even if there was such a tool, the OS APIs are different. In theory, you could write a “compatibility layer”, but somebody already did, and they called it “Cider”, so… yeah… probably not such a great idea if your whole premise is that Cider sucks. (Personally, I’d favor making a preprocessor that rewrites the source code to make it use the native APIs, because in addition to one less layer of function calls, you could look at the post-conversion code.)

So what they’d have to do is a ground-up rewrite, at least of certain parts. If they did a “proper” Model-View-Controller architecture, most of the Model layer could probably stay the same (or nearly the same, depending on where they put their file & network code), but they’d pretty much have to start over on the View and Controller parts. It’s not undoable, but we’re talking months (rather than weeks), if the programmer(s) already knows how the code works and all the shaders & such “just work”. If not, it could take over a year as the Art department figures out how to get all their stuff running in OS X.

In theory, if Anet wrote a client that did everything in DirectX 12, that might help make it easier to do a native OS X port, since DX12 and Metal are both lower-level APIs, and in theory that makes them more similar. I haven’t looked into how similar (or dissimilar) they are in practice, though.

Wouldn’t a native client also mean, as a necessity, that they would have to develop parallel patches? One for the Windows client, and one for the Mac client?

As I understand it now, we’re basically running the Windows client in a Cider wrapper, so they’re still only coding for one OS.

That, to me, is the biggest reason why I think a native Mac client is out of the question.

Yup basically that.

Having a native mac client would require them to be coding/developing everything in two different languages (so to speak). That would mean everything would need to be tested in both. That would mean have mac QA testers on top of their windows testers. It’s just all a lot more money that they probably don’t actually have.

Still doesn’t address the situation of Mac users and the client being worse than what native clients deal with.

Five minutes this time…
If they don’t want/can’t develop a Mac client and the game remains unplayable, they would must to say it and to offer a refund.

I wish they just never announced this god forsaken “client”.
I have more headaches over this game than enjoy myself. I simply can’t enjoy a game that i have to run on the lowest settings as possible just to set a frame rate limit to my game and STILL HAVE THE SLUGGIEST FPS IN THE UNIVERSE!

I’d have stayed playing Dota2 (which actually had some fps stuttering, but they actually worked on their client to improve and make it playable) or WoW; Heroes of the Storm… you know… games that don’t even announce their compatibility to mac but they have clients for it!

Doing some research i was able to find something about cpu core unparking, although it was for windows pcs.
Does any1 know if there’s a way to do that on os x, and if so, is it harmful to the computer? does it improve gw2 fps?

I’ve not heard of OS X “parking” cores like that, although I wouldn’t be particularly surprised if it did, since Apple’s been all about the battery life lately.
There is a way to tell OS X to give higher priority to certain processes (the “renice” command, if you’re curious). I just tried it though and it didn’t make much, if any, difference.

Hmmm good to know that there’s not much difference, that means only ANet can fix our problems… And speaking of fixes.
Apparently the next patch (probably still weeks away) will have perfomance improvement and some fixes. Don’t want to get my hopes up though, they didn’t mention the mac client at all, so these fixes probably are for the windows community, while we are still struggling to lift the fps above 15 running potato graphics for the past 3 years

Yes, but (there’s always a but) the amount of extra work involved heavily depends on how they structure their code, and how “deep” the changes in any given patch go.

John Carmack used to write Windows, OS X, and I think Linux versions of all ID’s engines, so it can be done (of course, it was easier for him to justify the effort since they were licensing out their engines).

Probably wait for the mac client for FFXIV online. it will be using middleware to apparently, but at least they said there going to be dedicated to constantly trying to improve the client and make it better, and they will have SUPPORT for it.

Well, not the current version, anyway. Although with Nvidia buying them out, I’m not sure there’ll ever be a new version.

Incidentally, does anyone know why they did that? I mean what did they have that Nvidia was interested in?

I think it was either some kind of streaming technology, or the technology to port games to be playable on the NVIDIA Shield console.
