After re-installing OS X Mavericks (fresh install, no application restore); the GW2 client has been pretty solid except during heavy WvW fights (large number of players). I notice the client starts to slow down and then it just stops with the same error message.

Anyone else having this same issue and know how to fix it?

Thanks!

P.S. I’ve tried fixing the client using the instructions in the sticky posts, but I don’t think it does anything. Also, when I boot to BootCamp, the game plays flawlessly on the same hardware, so I know it’s this Mac client (a.k.a. client wrapper).

I am having troubles during WvW as well. The client will crash with one of these two errors:

- lockedRect.pBits
- dstBits

Console reports:

9/14/14 7:08:32.910 PM WindowServer200: map

Also, my password is not being saved, either.

I am thinking of reinstalling the client to see if it resolves anything.

I will make a report for these.

Well. I recently got a new iMac (2-3 weeks ago)

27-inch iMac
NVIDIAGeForceGTX780M 4GB GDDR5
3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2X4GB
1TB Fusion Drive
OSX: 10.9.5

and based on the iMac performance thread, I was excited to try GW2 on it. First few weeks worked awesome. However now I am experiencing crashing all the time in WvW, where characters get rainbow colours and black boxes everywhere, tried to make a screenshot but it crashed after I press the button.

Kinda thinking that Gw2 is messing up my graphics card… That sorta sucks big time when it messes up such an expensive machine.

Gavian, is there anything I can do to reduce the lockedRect.pbits error from occurring? It’s pretty disheartening to wait through a queue of 50 people only to crash after 20 minutes in the middle of what was supposed to be an epic fight.

Had that twice tonight.

Graphic settings attached for reference.

The best thing is just getting the data from you guys in this thread and keeping this thread updated. We have three different groups working on this and coordinating with each other on it. Cold comfort I know but we are trying to run it down.

I have been seeing this as well. Before the September patch, significantly reducing my graphics settings seemed to be a solution to surviving intense WvW or World Boss fights without crashing. But since the September patch the crashes in those areas appear to be back with a vengeance, even with the reduced graphics settings.

I too can provide all the crashes in my ArenaNet.log since the September patch, system information, etc. Just give me a place to send it.

Just crashed during Tequatl fight, half way done. Got the “lockedRect.pbits” error code, quickly restarted client, wrong server, the map I was on was full… No rewards at the end. Was also in queue for wvw, from 80 to around 40 queue..
Again I don’t think there is anything wrong with the specs I have.

Playing GW2 without any browsers open significantly improves my game, much less lag even in populated areas that I never dreamed I could have…. I’m probably one of the few people who was too stubborn to play games without having unnecessary programs running, give it a shot if you haven’t already. I’m on a 2011 MBP, inferior specs to many or most of the mac users here.

Same here, running GW on a new MacPro (late 2013, 3.7 Quad Xeon E5 with dual D300 cards). The game crashes when I’m participating in World Event fights, or running around a heavily populated area (like e.g. a city).

What helps for World Events is turning graphical quality down to Best Performance; doing so I no longer crash during them or other heavily populated events.

For “normal” playing I now use a modified setting of Best Performance (basically almost every graphical setting turned up one step). While it doesn’t look as good as Best Visual it pretty stable.

So while a fix is in the works, it would be very helpful I we could save several individual graphical preferences that we can easily switch to (just like Best Visual and Best Performance right now).

Here’s my stats. I’m having the same type of issues, except mine crashes ALL the time recently. A lot of the time when I’m playing, but sometimes I’ll get a crash report the moment I try to hit the log in screen. I have quite a few characters, but I’m not sure if that would make that specific page more graphic intensive than a major battle.

What type of information do you want? I crash daily at least a couple of times if I do wvw or large events. It would get really redundant if I posted every time I crashed. And, when I do crash, it says that it was automatically reported to ANet. Is there something specific that you want that isn’t in the automatic reports that would help?

I too crash badly during heavy graphics fights. I have to set my graphics settings down to the bare minimum (minus the native resolution so it’s not blurry) and even then, it crashes at times.
I had this problem too back last year when I played a trial that was going on. I contributed it to the fact that not shortly after, I had to have my graphics card replaced, but having it replaced and coming back to the game now shows me that isn’t the case.

I’ll post my specs here.

I look forward to hearing any news. Recently it has crashed during boss fights, I got booted from Teq right when we won and of course came back to an empty map. Crashing in WVW. Tonight the frame rate became so slow it was unusable.

I quit out of all other programs, checked for anything weird using Activity Monitor. Started it up again and it was still super slow both in PVE and WVW. So bummed. (The WVW tournament lured me to finally put my toe in the water and I love it! Just wish I could play.)

Tonight’s slowness was on a previously not-as-bad
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5

Previously this week I was playing on a borrowed machine to see if I want to buy a PowerBook Pro with Retina screen. This was a brand spanking new one with 16gb of ram, etc. It was faster but whooo whee it crashed a lot in group fights. Part of the reason I want a new machine is to run GW2 better but… was not confident with all the crashing.

Thanks for any updates!

As noted above by Mr. Whishaw, this is a long time problem and known issue. I don’t have a perfect solution, but some others of us who have been experiencing this problem for over a year have found a sort of work-around.

Here are links to other posts about this same issue:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/Game-crashes-every-5-min-am-I-the-only-one/first

and more recently:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/Client-Crashing-2/first

Changing the graphics settings to best performance has at least kept the problem from recurring for me and others who were posting previously about this. It took a while to resign myself to the lesser appearance but at least the game is playable. I did try some testing for a bit to see if I could isolate the setting causing the problem. As far as I could tell, running with any single setting turned up to the maximum didn’t cause the crashes. I got part way through testing two settings at a time before I gave up. Nobody seemed interested in helping me out with the testing process. I hope this helps.

The other thing that might help some is doing a -repair, if you can. I seem to have lost that functionality some time ago, but don’t know if that is just me or they changed the client wrapper.

Do keep in mind in the case of the mac client since it runs on cider and is not native it can be difficult tracking down specific bugs it also takes more effort to fix sometimes requiring changes to both the actual client code as well as to cider.

Just saying this from personal experience. I’ve had the unfortunate experience of working with cider on some older AAA titles for their mac versions. It was not a pleasant experience you really pay for that ‘easy solution’ in the long run as oppose to going native. It’s a little to late in the game for them to considering going native unless they have all ready been working on it, people in general(non-developers) really underestimate the kind of horribly monstrous task that is.

I have been playing GW2 since it came out on my Mac. Since the September patch, I crash out during heavy fight scenes or when I am in town. Today, my lvl 62 ranger suffered his 1st death during a medium fight when the game crashed me out. If I had not crashed, I would have won the fight easily. Since I play ‘hard-core’ and delete characters when they die – THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!
It has been 2 months and there doesn’t seem to be a fix for a problem that started with the September patch. I think I should stop playing this game and go back to Diablo or Borderlands.

I’ve suffered Out-of-Memory / null pointer crashes for a while.

It was clear what was causing the crashes (lldb not needed,) but for fun I went through the support checklist. Repair. Login Items. New user. Reinstall. I drew the line at zapping PRAM. I wanted to play, and I’m no longer running OS 9.

If you stay long enough in any decently competitive wvw map, you’ll crash too. Turning character graphics to lowest (generic armour) isn’t a fix; the client will eventually run out of VM space and crash, albeit at a slower rate.

Since the cider port isn’t going to magically get 64-bit address space, I’ve take a proactive approach. I turned on the memory debugging overlay as per umms’ post (link below) so I can watch the virtual address space available. When it gets down around 120MB, I change maps. Changing maps frees up ~500MB of address space, so I can return to the fight without worrying too much about crashing… at least until that next big zerg starts loading in.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/Client-Crash/first#post4360855

If you’re suffering TCMalloc, lockedRect.pBits or other pointer crashes, this might be an approach that works for you too. You still might crash, but you’ll see it coming.

I notice drastically less crashes since the October patch. I let my client run on Best Appearance settings (albeit with medium Shadows and High Shaders) to see if I would instantly crash after I noticed that the wrapper had been patched.

I ran with a big Mad King’s Labyrinth zerg without crashing and I took the World Event Tour (only crashed once – during a Claw fight), and I also no longer seem to crash in cities. Previously only coming close to a large amount of players was a pretty guaranteed method for crashing and there was no chance of lasting through a World Event fight.

So for my Mac the fixes seem to have improved the situation.

I doubt these crashes will be truly resolved unless there’s a 64-bit version of Cider, but that’s unlikely given an ABI incompatibility / reserved register issue.

I’d like to see a switch to load generic back pieces and weapons in addition to the basic armour for a better temporary fix.

I’ve been having same issues for over a year now. I did open the support ticket and nothing help. Then I decide to tweak in-game graphic setting and see what can I get best out of this. I’ve try many different setting and finally I found remedy. Again, it is remedy, not solution. We need to rely on Anet to fix this completely, but in the mean time try the following.

Diable “Show All player names”
Resolution – windowed (XXXX – XXXX) – choose highest window resolution setting
Graphic Setting – Autodetect
Antialiasing – none
Character Model limit – low
Character Model Quality – Low

after u choose the window resolution, game will be in window mode, but press “Game menu” and click “full screen mode” at the upper left corner

Funny thing is, in the resolution setting, I choose the full screen but same resolution (XXXX – XXXX) as window, and client still crash during heavy graphic fight. Than I use window resolution and enter full screen mode, Game don’t crash. I have no idea why. haha

One more thing, u may use it as “auto detect” setting without changing "Antialiasing and character model setting, but u will get some graphic distortion (as shown in picture) during fight. And from time to time, game will crash if u open the “overview map” right after ‘world boss’ event. Well, at least it won’t crash during the fight.

It may not be the best resolution, but it still better than “best performance” graphic setting.

Please note that, I haven’t tested on silver waste and dry top map yet. But already cover most of the world boss event. So far it is fine for me. I will post again after I tested on silver waste (VW) event. Have a nice day

Aeka,

I think we are all aware of the possibility of turning down the graphic settings till the game looks horrible as a way to prolong the time you can play without crashing. The issues with that are that it looks horrible, you cannot see people around you in wvw because character model display is so limited, you cannot raise people from downed position when they are not visible despite laying right next to you, it looks horrible, and so on. In fact, my husband and I never play on the best graphics settings. We have turned down things to the lowest possible settings that still allow you to feel like you are playing a game from the last ten years and yet the crashes are persistent.

This did not used to be the case. In fact, prior to the EOTM patch, the mac wrapper was pretty good in wvw and large events. That patch essentially broke the mac wrapper. In the following patch, they put a bandage on it and have just left it as ‘good enough’ since then. So, the mac wrapper can work well, they have just chosen to not spend resources making the fix happen for whatever reason. As the developer above says, they are aware of the issue and yet there is still no fix over a year later on something so basic to the viability of a mac client for large scale events and wvw.
