Periodically, without rhyme or reason – sometimes after two minutes, sometimes 2 hours – my computer will shut all the way down and reboot.

  • The only time this happens is playing GW2. I can play all other type of off and online games on max settings for hours without issue.
  • Nothing shows in the event log.
  • Temperature is fine during play.
  • When playing, I shut down all non-essential programs.
  • I had my hardware recently checked over by a technician because I thought it was a hardware problem. No issues there at all.

First disable automatic reboot on bluescreens in your windows settings.

After that if the computer still restarts without a bluescreen its mostly
a problem with your power supply.

…or a defective DIMM (memory). It is entirely possible for one game out of several to only use the defective areas of memory stick (and thus trigger a BSOD). The only real way to ID a bad stick is to replace it. The majority of memory test programs are often unreliable in finding intermittent type defects.

Note that per above the first step is to disable the auto-reboot default of Win 7.
Computer Properties > Advanced system settings > Startup and recover SETTINGS button >uncheck the Automatic Restart box under System Failure section.

Thanks for the suggestions. My PSU is 875 watts which I thought would be good enough. I just had all my memory replaced along with the motherboard and SSD about four months ago (which doesn’t mean there can’t still be a bad stick, so I will keep that solution in mind).

In any case, I’ll shut off the auto-reboot and see what happens.

The suggestion about the PSU isn’t that what you have is insufficient wattage, but that it may be going (or has gone) bad (defective). Same possibility with the memory.

If it was his psu it would’ent just be shutting down during this game now would it, could be ram but i doubt it cause im also having this same problem with my 980 and all my gear is brand spanking new and been thouroughly stress tested, each part on its own, just this game it seems giving fatal crashes as none of my other games do it either, something in the settings thats been changed in recent patch ????

PSUs age with time .. that means they don’t give their full power anymore and at
some point if your CPU and GPU both are under heavy stress suddenly the point
is reached where the PSU says : sorry but thats too much .. i go to sleep now ^^

Its also hard to say if your other games need as much power as GW2 in a heavy zerg.

I am not discounting any solutions until I run through them – but – just to supply more info: it’s never happened during moments where there are tons of players on the screen. It’s random. The last time was during a personal story cut scene. The time before that my character was in a near empty Norn PVE zone.

As a counterpoint, I can play through TERA, dungeons and battlegrounds for hours on end if I choose, with no issues. No issues either with the reasonably graphically intensive ESO maxed out.

If this was a game coding error, doesn’t it make sense that more than half a dozen people would be seeing these “reset” errors? If you just want to insist it’s the game, fine, but we are just here trying to help you find the REAL problem.

So .. have you meanwhile disabled the reboot to see if its a bluescreen or not ?

Can’t see anything about that in your posts, so for me it looks that you indeed
ignore all the tips here.

Disabled the reboot, it took took a few hours but the system still shut down.

That said, I’m ruling out the PSU. The system shut down last night on my thief character and whenever I select it from the character screen the computer immediately shuts down again. I am, however, able to pick any other character with no problem. I am also able to go back and forth between characters without issue, and back and forth between other games without issue, but once the thief is selected again: complete shut down. Whatever that is, it is not the PSU.

I ran a memory test which shows no issues. I will now follow the suggestion of manual checking the memory sticks.

If your system is completely shutting down, it’s either overheating, bad power supply or bad motherboard.

I would substitute a known good working power supply as a test.

It >could< be the game – or at least the game interacting with hardware in a bad way. My machine developed the same symptoms at just about the same time you seem to have had them. Machine runs everything else fine, has previously been running GW2 without issue, then suddenly it started rebooting. All of my components are brand new – I haven’t even finished installing stuff and stress-testing.

Admittedly, it could be unrelated issues. I could have gotten faulty stuff from the factory (have not ruled that out yet, and will be looking into it, since if it isn’t something on my end, there’s nothing I can do about it), but the timing of the problem hints that there >might< be more to this than just a hardware issue.

I’m having a similar issue and I’m experiencing the same thing about certain characters. I was able to play my elementalist for days in WvW without any crash, then I went to a PvE map and crashed every 2-3 minutes. After logging a different character, everything’s fine again.

I’ve wasted quite some time on this already, fresh install of gfx drivers, tests after tests with no real findings, I’m out of ideas.

Any luck with manually checking the memory sticks, kitten nal.2601?

So … it’s not the memory. Did the swap out thing and came up with the same results. Shame, I was kind of hoping it was hardware – that’s easier to fix. Some weird issue (potentially) in the software that effects – whatever the actual numbers are – one in two thousand or similar is likely to never be resolved.

Complete necro, but I’m having this issue now as well. Brand new computer build. No memory, PSU , or GPU issue. Gonna go out on a limb and say it’s not the mobo. If this is a software issue. Anyone have any solutions. I just came back to GW2 after a very long hiatus and now I unfortunately can’t play the game.

Just had this problem start happening to me this week as well. I can log in, get to Select Character, and actually get into the game for roughly 2 minutes with everything running smoothly and cleanly… and then the screen goes ‘wrong’, the music cuts and loops, and everything freezes solid. Nothing is listed in the error logs, my computer doesn’t register there was an error at all, but it’s made GW2 unplayable for the time being. Comp isn’t overheating, everything else works after a reboot. Only GW2 is affected.

I can play any other game at full power, speed, and graphics, but starting today, GW2 decided it doesn’t want me playing. I kinda hope it’s just some weird code error that will be swiftly patched, as I also got HoT and have been waiting for it to start.

PC rebooting is ALWAYS a hardware issue. 90% of the time its thermal 5% of the time its power, and 5% of the time its GPU/RAM/Other.

Load up hwinfo for your system, and load its sensors applet. enable logging to desktop. Load up GW2 and wait for the system to reboot/shut down.

Then Load up the Log and see what your Temps are for all the components in the system. I am willing to bet its your CPU temp skyrocking causing the system to halt the CPU and shutdown the PC. Also you can post the log.

What do you mean ‘the screen goes wrong’. This could be the key to your issue here. This could be a sign that your GPU is dying.

I had a system we were working on for my brother where we took his boxed GTX570 and tried to make it work with this newer 4670K. The GPU’s 3D engine was toast, as when ever you loaded any 3D application the Video would cut out, audio would loop with the last 1-3 seconds of whatever sounds was played and after 45 seconds the system would just reboot.

Ended up using an older Nvidia 8800GTS until we can get him something better.

But the GTX570 was the issue, and it sounds VERY similar to what you are describing.

Your computer might be overheating. You might not see any signs of problems or anything, your PC will just shut off. Guild Wars 2 is very heavy on the CPU (not so much GPU) and most computers will automatically turn off if the CPU overheats. Mine automatically shut off twice today while playing GW2. I cleared out the CPU fan of all the dust and it’s not done it since. Overheating would also explain why it only happens when playing while GW2.

Hope this helps

I have the same problem, Guild Wars 2 just show down my computer and I think it’s the problem of this game, why? here is the reason.

I play other games too like LOL, and never had PC shut down before I installed guild wars 2. after I installed it, this game itself shutdown my pc, as well as other game starts to shut down my pc too.

I reinstalled the whole windows system, then everything goes back to normal, no other games shut down my pc, then lately I installed Guild wars again, and the shutdown just come back again.

There must be something wrong with this game, either changed the system default setting somewhere to modified some critical system rules, that lead to all these random shut down.

I googled it, a lot people have this problem if you google it. This game is fishy.

Try downclocking your video card. I’ve seen this error on my machine and could reproduce it depending on the settings. A video driver crash can cause an automatic reboot, or a system freeze or it can recover after sitting for 10-15 seconds.

No guarantees it will work, but it can’t hurt to try it…read this thread post.

I have the same problem. Picked up Heart of Thorns the other day and it will shut the computer down and reboot randomly. Sometimes immediately as you click to play character, other times I get get maybe an hour and a half of play, and everything is set to lowest video setting or off. Nothing else I use or play does this and I can run ESO and Skyrim almost at max settings with no issues. Its not overheating, its not a RAM problem. It actually seemed more stable when I was playing before the whole game had finished downloading.

Tried the other fixes listed in this thread but no difference. Would just like to be able to play the game.

October 16, 2016 – I have had the same issue, starting 2 weeks ago (I think that was right after an update?) – specifically, after playing GW2 for just a few minutes, my computer shuts off (no BSOD) and restarts, but the monitor does not register any connection. I have had PC repair technicians examine my computer, completely reinstall Windows, update drivers, run stress tests, etc. This is a custom built gaming computer only 5 months old, and everything is working great except this issue with GW2 specifically. I have replaced my monitor – same issue. I have replaced my surge protector (‘dirty power’ was theorized) and swapped outlets, even different rooms. I have swapped out power cords and different monitor cords. Finally I uninstalled every game and reinstalled them – all except GW2. Everything works. I ran SWTOR overnight, and it was still on the next morning. This is an issue with GW2.

Hard shutdowns, at first the screen would “blue” screen (black screen) but my computer was obviously still on
Tried to troubleshoot and now it’s a hard shutdown after 2-3 minutes

I had this issue on my PC and traced it to a failing GPU. Do you have a spare, or can get one from someone temporarily, so that you can swap it out and see if that resolves the issue?

Having 4GB is a bit on the low side nowadays as you want around 8GB. Since it just came up when you got the laptop, what are the stats on it?

These problems are with the computer itself. No game, regardless of how weak your hardware is or how laggy it makes it, should ever knock your computer out. Blue screen, yes, but if it flat out turns off then there’s other issues. This is doubly true if your computer is new; that’s definitely something to contact the company over.

Well actually there is one exception I recall. Back then, Starcraft II had an issue once with uncapped fps, which would burn graphics cards but that was mostly Nvidia’s fault with defective drivers and already hot cards as good design and drivers would throttle the cards once it got too hot. That’s probably not the case here, but you could always cap the fps here to 60 or even 30. That being said, it might be a good idea to hold back on updating drivers until enough people have tested the waters. Contrary to popular wisdom, it may not always be the best idea to always update to the newest drivers.

I’ve only had a computer turn off on me once while gaming, and that’s when the power supply exploded. Like literally boom with sparks everywhere. I’ve also run on 2gb on various clunkers until 2016, so I will just flat out state that Gw2 will never blow your computer up.

If other games still work, it may just be because Gw2 puts a heavier load on the CPU, that tends to place the problem on heat though it may also be a problem with the power. Looking at this thread, I see some pretty hefty components. In the case of a laptop, maybe the battery has issues.

General things you should check with that or similiar issues:

1. Do you get a BSoD? If so, write down the error code and file listed as the cause.

2. How long has it been since your last clean Windows install? There might be corrupt drivers or system files (for the latter, try this).

3. You can run a full check of your RAM.

4. Have you tried to replace your S-ATA data cable(s) that connect your motherboard to your hard disk drive(s)? If one is broken, it can lead to a sudden reboot (among other issues).

5. Have you checked for overheating issues with your hardware?

I’ve started getting this exact issue, and only with GW2. I’ve tested other games with higher power draw and I don’t get this issue at all. I’ve also been monitoring my cpu/gpu temperatures and they’re both well below anything considered ‘hot’. I just updated my drivers, so I don’t think that’s the issue either. Just recently started having this problem over the past couple of weeks. My laptop had to be sent back for an RMA (the 3mm mic port stopped functioning, though is working now)

When it was returned I reinstalled windows 10, and all other programs. Before this GW2 worked beautifully.

1. No blue screen, everything simply freezes up, then restarts.
2. Like 2 weeks ago.
3. Received a printed report from RMA saying all their stress tests passed, memory was one thing tested, including GPU memory
4. It’s a laptop… recently RMA’d
5. Yes, CPU and GPU temps never getting high.

Just to test to see if it was really GW2 having this problem, I didn’t launch it for nearly a week. Never had a problem.

The minute I launched GW2, logged into my engi, started chopping down a tree….. frozen, then 10 sec later the comp rebooted. No blue screen no warning. (Auto restart WAS on. Just turned that off. Will update if that happens again.)

I have ONCE been able to tab out of GW2 when it froze like this, and went about other things on my other monitors. After about 2 or 3 minutes, GW2 kicked me to the logon screen saying the connection with the server had been lost. I have not been able to duplicate this.

Nothing else is causing restarts…. and it’s awful when it crashes right as Morty dies in DS ;-;

It’s crashed in instances, in guild halls, in PvE, WvW, PvP, even when I’m the only player I can see in a PvE map, I don’t know what is causing it, but it’s seemingly random. Sometimes within 2 minutes of launching the game, sometimes after 4 hours of play. Sometimes it works fine all day! I don’t understand this.

Forums wouldn’t let me upload the evtx file, so I had to save it in a TXT file. Change the extension to xml to view it in a better format. But you probably knew that already. It has about 111 different events from one crash to the next.

Wow, nice specs. Based on the monitor info, I am guessing ROG G752VS.

I am trying to parse through your event logs and it would take awhile. Windows event viewer is complaining about file, so I have to search manually and I may find nothing. D’oh I suck

I am looking through your logs and I notice windows did try to create a dump file.

May I ask, did you ever check the battery life while playing.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/comments/56n4s5/battery_drain_when_plugged_in_and_gaming/

GW2 is harsh on both the cpu and gpu at the same time. I just wanna rule out the obvious and Gw2 is draining too power from the battery while plug in.

May I ask, is the logs trim in anyway? I cant load it up to event viewer.

I wonder about your storage. Windows reporting errors for the pagefile. Perhaps, force windows to make a new pagefile?

It said eventID 51

it is currently plugged in. and it has a 94% charge. I’ll keep an eye on it to see if that is the case.

Not that I know of. It may have cut off some info when I saved it as an xml file. Let me see if I can find that particular one. Will edit with all the info event viewer gives me when I find it

~Edit~

It doesn’t appear to me like there is any other info given regarding that message. It doesn’t happen before every restart either (just checked that) I’ve got about 4 of those warnings, 1 from the 14th, then three from the 22nd. I did have like 5 crashes on the 22nd however. The info I found in the event is pasted below.

Windows might not use pagefile on boot. Paging is basically swapping. It usually used when the ram full. I am a bit wondering if it causing your errors since paging shouldnt really fail.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging#Terminology

I guess someone else chime in because I dont use raid.

windows crash dump writes to the page file.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/130536/windows-does-not-save-memory-dump-file-after-a-crash

If there are random page file errors, I wonder if windows is able to produce usable dumps.

I set it to clear it on a shutdown, and recreate on boot.

I have had GW2 open for about 2 hours now, no crashes as of yet. The dmp file is set to save automatically already.

Forced a crash with that link you provided (reg edit), Blue screen showed up, it saved the dmp file. But with my problem, it doesn’t ever blue screen. The game freezes, then a few seconds later the sound freezes, then all my monitors go dark, then I see the start up logo. It doesn’t get a chance to do a dmp file

Meh, I was thinking tdr timeout, but I cant find it in your event logs

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/display/timeout-detection-and-recovery

oh well, I will try to think something else later. I am just guessing at this point.
