And another Voice.
spec I7 2600k
8gb ram
Nvidea 560 Ti

Turning on V-sync did seem to mean i got less crashes or driver resets (the black screen for a second)
does seem to be when im around water areas, such as the current story quest im doing ive had sever al driver resets and so far 4 crash to desktops.
Again PC nearly new and plays fine other high demand games.
Seem to be alot of people on here posting I7 processors possible to be the multi threading?
if so does anyone know how to switch it off or even better disable it for an individual program.

I had this issue, was crashing to black screen or simply to the desktop every 10min or so during gameplay. My card is MSI 670 GTX OC.

I tried over 6 different drivers from Nvidia, (from the latest beta and worked me way back until I was unable to find older drivers) ran mem test and GPU load test. Monitored the heat on the card to rule out that this was a heat issue.
I can also monitor the power consumption on the card and trust me, that’s not it either.

Then I saw that some people reporting that by underclocking the GPU fixed this issue for them.

So I tried, used MSI Afterburner to bring the card down by 100mhz, and lo and behold, been playing for about 6 hours with no issues at all, the card runs at the same heat as before, so this was not an heat issue, and the power difference is nothing to talk about.

To verify I stopped downclockin the GPU and the issue came back.

I can’t explain it, but downclocking the GPU has worked for me, and its just GW2, I can play any other game full throttle with this card,

Just thougt I put this out here, so if somebody has not tried bringing the card down abit, can try his luck.

best regards.

So I also have a DIR-601, having the same issues as everyone else with it. Seems like that’s probably the issue. Any clue as to why?

Anyone tried a powerline connection instead of plugging straight into the modem? I think I need to try this first. It is not possible for me to plug directly into the modem at this time.

What has fixed the issue for some DIR-601 owners is to disable SPI in the routers firewall settings, I did this as well and haven’t black screened since

I have gone through this with tech support already. Installing a clean version of my drivers and even so far as using third party program to wipe all previous installations of my drivers. I post here to help Anet and players understand this issue further.

These crashes manifest as a black screen, (Occasionally displaying programs I run alongside GW2 as Firefox or skype) which will persist for 3-9 seconds and revert to the game. During which sound caches, and then plays all at once after it has recovered. They are accompanied by a popup in the bottom right alerting me that my display driver has crashed and has been recovered. From time to time it will crash rapidly; 3 times right after each other (and I can not remember a time when it was not 3 and they did not occur in rapid succession) at the end of which it will display a white screen and the game will need to be closed via task manager or Dwwin. For me they started on the last day of beta weekend 3 and I can reliably recreate them within caves or rocky environments. A list of these follows

Twilight Arbor
Shaman’s Rookery
DemonGrub Pits Jumping Puzzle
Certain locations within Lornar’s Pass mostly in caves but can occur simply around caves or on top of boulders etc.

I hope this helps. I can be reached for more information in game or through my Email.

So I just finished my little support talk with the nVidia guy and he said that there wasn’t anything else they could do and that I should talk to the developers.

Is there any fix being worked on at the moment? Would be great if we could get a word on that.

Thanks.

Still having this issue. I still can’t even enter some zones. Now I’m paying close to 1s per port, which translates to 10-20s per day just to find a location that will allow me to log in (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, read the portion of my original post about facing the wall).

@Anet
It has been over 2 weeks and I am still unable to play the game properly. I’m trying to keep my cool here, but there’s only so much one can take. It’s not like the affected systems/cards are rare, they are some of the most common pieces available these days! Why have you not sorted this already?

I might add that this is surely an issue with the game. I do get this issue with other games as well, but GW2 is the ONLY game it’s 100% reproduceable with every try.

In other games I may get it one time in 4-5 hours, or even at all. So while it has something to do with the graphics I would say that at least something is majorly wrong with the game itself and not our drivers/settings or nVidia’s drivers.

i suppose this has not been tried , i didnt see it mentioned in the thread or maybe i missed it.

This is actually a fairly common issue that players have been experiencing due to certain configurations in the Nvidia Control Panel. We suggest adjusting your Anti-Aliasing settings in the Nvidia Control Panel. Please try the steps below to make these changes:

1. Right click on the desktop.
2. Select NVIDIA control panel.
3. Select Manage 3D Settings.
4. Verify the “Antialiasing – Mode” is set to Application-controlled / or click Restore.
5. Click OK.

Once completed, please try launching Guild Wars 2 again.

The only fix that really worked for me is downgrading my video card to an old Nvidia 9500 GT.

No crashes from using the 9500. When I use the GTX 550 ti , it crashes almost everytime I change zones. This used to never happen with my 550 ti during beta!

Must be some type of memory leak or data not being routed properly to the graphics card, or the RAM on these high end GPUs are not flushing fast enough to let new data in.

I have a 295. I was having the same black screen issue. I have also had the issue with other games. The Anti-Aliasing fix didn’t seem to work.

What has worked is the Anti-Aliasing fix AND setting it to single GPU. There are two step I took to disabling multi-GPU.

1st I set the Multi-Display/Mixed-GPU acceleration to single display performance mode under Global Setting under manage 3d settings.

2nd I changed it to disable multi-GPU mode under set multi-GPU and PhysX Configuration. (I alos made sure PhysX is on the non display GPU)

SPI is Stateful Packet Inspection, a necessary firewall function. Disabling SPI may have fixed your GW issue, but you have now seriously compromised the security of you computer.

TBH the GW2 profile in the 306.02 drivers is set by default to single GPU ,at least it was on mine. I suggest to everyone that has these issues to reset their nvidia control panel and profiles to default.

After playing since the 3 day headstart, I ran into the black screen issue you guys are experiencing. And I am setting my expectations low on when they will respond to my ticket since after reading the posts here that some haven’t been responded to by anet.

Im on a G72 Asus Laptop
P8700
GTX 260M
6GB DDR2
500GB Sata

Now I play games on this alot when traveling and it work fine. Last game I played prior to this happening was GW2. I was on my 55 human war, logged off, shutdown lappy.

Now I wake up to find this..sigh. My other games work so I do not know what gives. I have also been using the 304.79 drivers since game launch (gw2 itself recommended me to use that version).

This sucks.

Adding my voice to this choir – the problem keeps getting on my nerves. I hope you’re close to finding the solution, cause the black screen is really annoying.

there is no system in when it wants to go to black screen. Sometimes it appears 5 mitues after the start, sometimes I can play for hours before seeing it. I can toggle menu with F11, can change resolution or alt+tab somewhere. I can see cursor and hear music but that’s all. Have to alt+F4 eventually.

I’ve tried switching AA in nVidia control panel, switching off wifi router and working directly through modem, joining complete another 4g network, both nvidia drivers, windowed mode, downclocking video card and some other tricks found on the forums. No solution here. I hope you’ll work something out.

adding my dxdiag just in case it could help. somehow…

I’m running into an off and on black screen with eventual graphics card driver crash as well. It occurs most during indoor cave exploration and underwater. I’ve tried multiple fixes to no avail and can play for extended periods of time without issue. It does eventually happen though and it is very frustrating. I still love the game, but this does make it a bit on the lame side, especially when I end up dead because of it. Because it happens in caves most of all, Any chance at going into a dungeon is pretty much nixed until a fix happens. Here is the kicker though, and makes me believe it is the game itself and not a hardware issue as much…My wife has an identical computer as mine…Same card, same drivers. She has no issues at all.

Got the same issue. Bought myself a new pc today, w7 64 bit, i7 processor 3770, NVIDIA GeForce GT630 up to 4095MB, 12g DDR3 mem, 2tb HD. Game freezes for 3-9 secs, going swift to desktop, then returning back to game. Play 5-10 more minutes, happens again.

Thanks for your reply Ashley.

I have previously posted my Speccy / DxDiag files earlier in this thread, however just wanted to make an additional note.

The game, for myself, crashes the instant that the game world loads up (that is, past the character selection and the following load screen). It’s 100% reproducible and I have yet to be able to make it past the spot you originally spawn on.

If I can make any further contributions to the post, other than saying that none of the proposed workarounds have worked for me, then please let me know and I’d be happy to assist.

Getting black screen freeze here also. Can’t say it happens more often doing anything in particular. Full lock up, have to perform hard reboot. This happens sometimes within 10 minutes of logging in, and sometimes (not often) I can play for hours without issue.

I have tried everything I can think of. Removing router, using Driver Sweeper to try various drivers. Used EVGA Precision X to up fan speed, monitor temps (hovers around 60) adjust voltage, and underclock. Chipset, audio, etc drivers are up to date. Messed with Nvidia Control Panel settings as well as in-game settings. Disabled firewall, antivirus, etc. I’ve run Memtest and Furmark without interesting result. Nothing seems to make a difference.

I really like this game. But the black screen problem is getting old, fast.

I really like this game but the black screen gets really annoying. I get in about 30 min of play time and then my screen goes black and says “No DVI Signal Detected”. From there I have to press the restart button on my pc. All my drivers are up to date as well and my computer is more than able to run this game. NVIDIA geforce 460 card. I hope this is fixed really soon! In the mean time I’ll probably be playing diablo… do you think i can get a refund because i paid for a game that I can’t even play. I wanted to add my experience here to hopefully help some people. I am running a somewhat aged machine (built it three years ago). Core i7 860 / EVGA P55 SLI / 4GB Corsair Dominator GT / Corsair 850w PSU / EVGA GTX 295 Co-op Edition. Keep in mind I have never done ANY overclocking.

Now, it still runs everything I throw at it flawlessly. The only hiccup I ever encountered was with Team Fortress 2. Fix was to turn off Multi-GPU for hl2.exe. No big deal, still runs great.

I was in the beta weekends for GW2 and had some flickering from time to time and the occasional total freeze that required a restart. I though eh, its a beta they’ll fix it. Well, unfortunately they did not. I’ve been battling since the game came out trying all sorts of things. Latest drivers, beta drivers, clean driver installs.

Turning off Multi-GPU seemed to help a little. Before when it would go black, all I could see was the mouse and the computer would not respond at all – forced a restart. With only one GPU being used, if it ever did go black, I could alt-tab or open task manager and kill the process. Then fire up the game again and continue playing.

Definitely not heat related. We had a LAN party shortly after the game came out which included 10+ hour sessions of non-stop GW2. One day it was perfectly fine the whole time, another day it was glitching out every few minutes. Black screen, rainbow colors, all kinds of weird stuff. I really noticed it starting to get bad once I reached the dragon-brand area.

Next I tried a “clean” install of the latest beta drivers. Left all settings default (including multi-gpu). Seemed to be doing okay for a little while. But sure enough eventually the black screen showed its ugly face.

That brings me to today. I downloaded the latest version of EVGA Precision (3.0.3). Saw the core clock of GPU1 was at 300 MHz and GPU2 was at 576 MHz. I underclocked GPU2 by roughly 10% to 518 MHz and the game has been running like a dream all day. Possibly because I’m now able to use the dual GPUs instead of turning one off… but I’m seeing FPS anywhere from 30 up to mid 70’s and NO black screens all day, and I’ve been playing for quite a few hours. Something strange to note: I set the GPU2 clock down to 518, but it’s showing 399 MHz in the readout. Not sure what thats all about, if someone could shed some light that would be great.

The important thing is, it’s been running on Medium/High settings all day without a hitch. Although I don’t feel I should have to reduce the performance of my $500 graphics card (3 years ago) to play the game, I’d much rather underclock than turn one of the GPUs completely off. I could have saved $200 if I wanted to do that :P

I feel like this is progress…

Bumping this up with some new information. I’ve been running GTX 295 in SLI and it didn’t work. So I tried to remove the card in the first port and replace it with the other GTX 295 I had in the second port so I only had one card in the computer. It did not work either. So either I have two damaged GTX 295 or there’s something wrong with the game and that series altogether.

Same problem – have tried all the tips above, using latest drivers and still getting black screen crash. Two times out of three the game will recover from black screen and play at substantially reduced fps ( from 130 pre-crash to 30 post crash) then eventually will crash to black screen and error message.

Noticed that each time that i install drivers the game will run fine for the first play after then with each successive play it resumes crashing – that sounds like a cache problem to me.

Whatever it is, it needs fixing at their end not ours – and soon.

Ashley, first, I would like to say thank you for keeping in touch with us on this issue, as it is very frustrating. You asked for instances of the issue and workarounds tried, so I will add mine.

I get the following intermittently:

1) An intermittent black screen for about 5 seconds with games sounds in the background.
2) An intermittent black screen and then minimization of the game with game sounds and cursor in the back ground.
3) An intermittent prolonged black screen and an error message that says a driver error has occurred and Guild Wars 2 needs to exit. This sometimes locks me up temporarily and even an alt F4 or ctrl alt delete does not help.

It appears to be some kind of monitor refresh, because when I get the black screen, my monitor says “monitor” in the upper right part of the screen. It’s as if I had changed graphical settings.

It “appears” to be happening when I enter a new zone or during intense graphical output, like a public event. I spent hours in Kessex and had maybe three of them, but when I got into Gendarran Fields, I almost immediately had successions of them and had to restart the game multiple times. It’s caused some deaths, some missed vista content and has interfered with my personal story. I have tried dumbing down the graphics, adjusting antialiasing in the NVidia control panel, running multiple driver versions, even bypassing my wireless router to no marked effect. Some have recommended a graphics clocking utility which I don’t feel I should need to run to play the game.

My specs are:

Intel Core i7-2600 3.40 GHz
8 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB 16X PCIe
Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gbs
64bit Windows 7 Home Premium

Game runs fantastic on near max setting save this one issue. I am looking forward to you guys smashing this bug for good.

I decided I had enough crashes and I’m now going through an RMA with EVGA. My GTX 570 had no problems with any other games, but maybe that was the problem. Either way I got fed up with not being able to play GW2. Constant crashes (which only happened in GW2) since BWE1 have me at wit’s end.

Now I’m playing on a GTS 450 that barely plays the game. I’m not crashing anymore, but “playing” isn’t exactly fun.

@Ashley I really do hope you are able to fix the issues with some routers, because I’m not going to go out and buy another router for a single game, thats another $50-$80 I don’t need to be spending.

So for now as I have stated in other threads as well as this one, I will just keep my SPI off.

Edit: Just for those who are unware SPI does offer more protection, but as long as you are using a good firewall (>_> I would not recommend free’s or Windows Defender) you should be find.

Hello -

I am also having this same issue: black screen, music still plays in the background, seems like a video driver crash, and sometimes after the black screen I go back into the game, only to crash to desktop minutes later. More likely to occur during events and moving across zones. Can’t play for more than 15 min.

In case this helps ArenaNet Support and those who have already posted, I suggest this may be a memory leak issue (rather than a video driver crash, which it looks like). My crash log consistently says:

Exception: c0000005
Memory at address 00000000 could not be read
App: Gw2.exe

or, as some others have seen:

Out of Memory: arena=Environment, cat=Map, allocBytes=22431256, arenaBytes=97466272, fallbackBytes=45872152, align=0
App: Gw2.exe

Also, myself and others have noted that these crashes appear to happen—almost 100% of the time—once memory usage for GW2 exceeds 1.3 GB – 1.5 GB (as measured by the Task Manager in windowed mode). This occurs on both 64- and 32-bit OSs, and regardless of GPU, router, or any other hardware. If this is the case, then the issue has nothing to do with any of our computers or software, but rather due to faulty/poor code in the game causing a memory leak.

Many thanks to Ashley from Support for continuing to monitor this thread. But if my guess is right, Support will need to escalate this issue about as high as you can, because the only way to solve this (for me, and the hundreds of people who have posted here and elsewhere as having this problem) is for ArenaNet to update the game itself.

Hope this helps

Still having issues with this… tried all of tech support’s suggestions so far (tweaking Nvidia control panel, clean driver reinstall, etc).

Happens for me vastly more often in WvW than anywhere else, which is strange. Seems it’s some sort of load-triggered crash, perhaps? (unlike some, I don’t see any error messages)

Another GW2’er with a GTX460 experiencing these issues.

Upgraded to 306.23 and the crashing/hardware failure continued if not more.

Based off of all the research and reading I’ve done, it sounds like it could be memory leaks on behalf of GW2. So, I would hold off on RMA’ing your GPU until this is fully fixed.

Pleaaaaase help us ANet!

Any ETA on this? I know that other bugs are important, but anything that stops the game cold is pretty serious. I expect bugs like this in beta, but I didn’t have any problems in beta with this game…only the live client.
