I’m not going to play Guild Wars 2 while this ridiculous issue is not resolved. I spent 54,00 euros on this game and i’m not enjoying it. I’m not having a satisfactory experience.

CPU usage ranges from 20% to 50% (max).
The percentage varies every second, even if I am with the camera still staring at a fixed point. COMPLETELY UNSTABLE.

Err, what’s the problem here? I don’t see any issues at all.

Your GPU is fairly low end which is why it’s maxing out. Also, you expect to run this game @ Ultra on a low end gpu? Not going to happen buddy.

I don’t really see an issue here either. Turn some settings down if you need more than ~30fps , especially shadows – they are one of the biggest fps hog in every game I have ever played.

Id say start lowering the unnecessary settings like FXAA / Reflections and such to see if it makes difference. W?sh my gpu was fully utilized while playing lol im getting quite happy when I see 40-50%

It is obvious you guys dont know what are you talking about. Its more than clear has something wrong, my CPU USAGE is 20%, 20%!
So, you guys want to tell me if my Core i5 have a 90% CPU USAGE my fps will not increase?
And only this week, at the SAME spot, i already get 45 FPS, 35FPS and now 27FPS. So, this is normal? My video card is ruining continuously in one week?

And with this LOW END GPU i can play Skyrim on ULTRA 1080P, BF 3 on ULTRA with FXAA and ambient occlusion, Lineage 2 and World of Warcraft with all max, Splinter Cell Conviction, and other games.
Only Guild Wars 2 i cant with decent FPS.

Your 550Ti is bottlenecking. You have your settings well overdone for what FPS you’re expecting out of it. Also, this game doesn’t seem CPU-intensive at all. On my i7 2600/GTX670 combo, the CPU never exceeds what you’re experiencing.

550ti is a budget card mate, sorry to break it to ya.

but to be honest, the game is super heavy on cpu, try wvw….with 60 people onscreen your cpu is maxed and if you have less than ani5 you get 1-3 fps

So many pc tech newbs expect brand new mmo engines to run well on low-end gear/unbalanced systems.

@op ,Do this with your 550ti, Get a TWS buddy key, max it out like you did here…..then go to its forums to post the exact same thing there.

I have to agree. All the information in this thread points to “heavilly GPU dependent features taxing your GPU and lowering you framerate.” For higher framerates, turn down some of the graphics options like Anti-aliasing, Shaders, Shadows, and Post-Processing.

Working as intended.

More to the point, Skyrim is a console game.. a budget PC will run it beautifully.. MMO games tax hardware BIG time.

1. Comments like this don’t help. Be constructive and offer advice or something that contributes to resolving the issue. People are here to share information that hopefully will point Arena in the right direction.

2. My “low-end gear/unbalanced system” specs are below.
OS: Win 7 64bit SP1
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition Six-Core
RAM: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 8GB (4 × 2GB) DDR3 1600
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5
GPU: GTX 690 4GB (306.23 driver)
SSD: Crucial M4 512GB
PSU: Thermaltake W0131RU 850W

I’m technical but not an expert when it comes down to game design/utilization/cpu instructions etc. but I would like to think that this game should be running like butter on my configuration. Or am I crazy?

If I am, then please share your thoughts and tell me why one of the best AMD CPUs paired with the best Nvidia GPU can’t seem to crunch/render this “revolutionary game” that seems to be taxing the hell out of a large number of high end systems, but then runs smooth as silk on lower end pc’s/laptops. If you can explain that, then I’ll shell out and buy the equipment below.

ASRock Z77 Extreme6 LGA 1155
Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 × 4GB) DDR3 2133
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro RSA00-AMBAJ3-US 1000W

P.S. – What does unbalanced mean? Are you saying these systems need medication?

There really is no issue here. The CPU is waiting on the GPU to finish rendering (meaning the GPU is bottlenecking the CPU) before continuing operations, and in the meantime is in an idle-to-low-activity state. This is normal.

About all you can do (and should) is turn Shadows down (Ultra does kill your FPS, and High looks 90% as good anyways), and Reflections to Sky/Terrain. I would also disable depth blur simply because I opt to have distant objects actually clear instead of blurry, but this is personal preference and may or may not increase your FPS a bit.

Other than that, you are looking at a vid card upgrade to get any more frames/sec. If and when you decide to upgrade your GPU, you will see your CPU usage rise as well (and most likely your GPU usage will drop if you get a high end card).

I’ll try. More than likely, and even though GW2 spawns multiple working threads, there is a main thread that the engine relies on, and if this thread slows or stalls for any reason, the other threads that rely on it also slow and stall. Since AMD CPUs are, by nature of hardware design, not as efficient per core as newer Intel CPUs, and the main thread of GW2 only occupies one core, you will see less performance (even with more cores) on a similiar AMD setup vs. an Intel setup. This is why the BullDozer (8 core AMD CPU) performs so much worse than even quad core Intel CPUs in this game. It’s not always about the number of cores, it’s about the efficiency of them, especially in games and apps that heavily rely on one main thread for most of it’s operations (you may be surprised how many games do). As far as the top-end Nvidia card goes, well I can almost guarantee that it’s being bottlenecked by the CPU, for the aforementioned reasons. You could probably run with a 5-series and see nearly identical FPS in-game.

The only way you’ll see improvements with the AMD system vs. buying a new Intel rig outright, is when and if A.Net optimizes the game to make more use of the GPU, offloading certain CPU tasks to the GPU, etc. No telling when/if that will ever happen, but a lot of us are hoping it will. This also pertains for other games; as I mentioned there are plenty out there that, even though the developer may claim multi-core support, still rely on one main thread to run the engine. It sucks, but I hear it’s easier to develop that way. Still, with all of the multi-core CPUs these days, and especially with these kinds of games being heavily CPU-dependent, devs should be looking for more efficient ways to spread the load evenly amongst all cores in a CPU. It just hasn’t really happened yet.

Hope that helps.

PS – I’m not telling you to run out and drop thousands on a new rig, that’s all you! Haha.

@Idolicious: +1 for being the first person to understand my posts.

The simplest main thread is just a loop that collects data from it’s children threads, does some calculations based on how that data changed from last time, and passes it off to the GPU. The number of times per second it runs = your FPS.

Optimizations will be in 2 flavours.
1) Get the math PHD’s to find easier ways to do those calculations. It’ll give a small boost, but no where close to the 200-400% that some people expect.
2) Move stuff out of the thread. Because disabling sound does seem to affect it, that can be one area for their team to look into.

Ty sir

I’m hoping for a little optimization both from points 1 and 2, however you are definitely correct in the fact that we won’t see gains of 200%+ and people would be foolish to expect that. We’ll probably still see a bit more FPS gains from new AMD/Nvidia drivers (especially for the newest line of cards), but only a small increase in performance via internal game optimization – unless they decide to overhaul the entire engine.

100% usage? Dude probably your card is running in lower pci express buss than the recommended for that card
test it with gpuz and see your supported buss and the running buss if they are different
then put in nvidia settings max power performance
and remove the card clean the pciex slot with a brush well and the card and then plug it again
this will 100% fix that problem…if its something else this will not change anything
