I run a Intel HD 4000 with a I5 3210… not top of the line but more then enough to ever play this game, I can run leveling on full graphics at 25 fps , and wv3 i run on total min due to culling with around 60fps always drops in big fights of course to around 35-40 fps.

I logged in tonight after patch and guildies hit me up that jormag was up, ive done this many of times and always slightly laggy i get around 25-30 during the fight. After the patch i went to 3-5….. So i restarted ensured nothing was in back running, I load again and go to wv3 EB, I zone in and notice slightly glichy which is normal on fresh load normalizes within a min or so…. not tonight, i ran a 20-25 fps walking around the spawn area with no large zergs or any fights going on… WTF lol did this patch do to me hahaha, anyone else having issues

Yep, same for me also.

Running a Asus AMD 1gb GDDR5 6670 with a AMD Athlon 64×2 4000+ 2.1ghz fine, if not perfectly, before patch (Was getting 30-50 in some areas, around 24 in LA, and sometimes rises up to 60 in certain areas) Medium/High settings.

After recent patch, it seems performance has been downgraded and i can hardly get past 36fps in some areas now….

Also, I know this is just the character selection screen yadadada, but before patch i was always getting 60fps on it ( I even sat for 30 minutes looking at the fps on the character screen, while i played around with settings) NOW after patch it has dropped dramatically down to 42fps, constant.

One way you can check your FPS drop is by opening your contact (Y) menu. When you do, your FPS drops by 1/3 or more.

My FPS have decreased, too.

About 10 or more minimum FPS,
which gives me a very hard time right now
in both PvE and PvP.

I first noticed it in Lion´s Arch but structured PvP is affected as well.
And it gets really bad there, 17 or less FPS when the absolut minimum was 27 before.
Strangely I can still get 60 FPS sometimes, but it´s the minum FPS that annoy me right now.

I don´t know what happened but I hope it gets fixed fast.

I’m having the same issue. I was running fine until the last patch, and now I’ll go from normal (30-50 fps) to sudden drops down to 3-5 fps. Inconsistently, so it’s not dependent on number of people near me or anything. I’ll be standing still and it will happen with no one around and then go back to normal in a minute, or it will persist until I’m forced to log out since it makes the game unplayable. I’ve tried updating my drivers and cleaning out my computer, but no success at all. Oddly, if I go to my map everything is normal speed and on the game screen my cursor still goes normally, but the game itself runs at 3-5 fps. I haven’t changed anything in my system before the patch and all my other games and programs run just fine so I know the patch did something.

I’ve also noticed that drops in GW2 FPS don’t always coincide with bursts of activity near me. Rift had that same problem before so many people gave up on that game … you could be fishing all by yourself with absolutely nothing going on nearby and your monitor would suddenly turn to a PowerPoint slide show for a while. It would happen to EVERYONE in the game at the same time and it would always coincide with some major event going on elsewhere in that server (chat would light up like a Christmas tree) … clearly a server-side network bandwidth limitation in their case.

I suspect that something similar is the situation here. In other threads players have posted their path pings to the ArenaNet servers and the packet delays are fine right up until they hit the game server, at which point they go to a few hundred msec. Why it seems to have gotten worse after the recent patches is not clear to me, but they seem to have buggered something up somewhere.

Not that we’ll ever know for sure, of course. ArenaNet hasn’t been forthcoming at all for any of these problems, and I’m sure they think it is to their advantage for us to be second guessing our systems instead of going after them with pitchforks and torches like they deserve.

Funny thing is that I live with Gilren, and we often times play at the same time with his wife all on the same network. The “official” response he’s gotten so far is that the issue is client side or ISP driven. Now what makes this funny is he has the same laptop I have, running the same setup except video drivers and yet I’ve not had any of these issues while using an older Nvidia driver. Not only will he have FPS issues while playing, we’ve seen FPS issues on the character selection screen! This is clearly not an issue with bandwidth but rather with the current patch not working with the latest drivers from Nvidia.

First than all greetings to all of you.

I have a huge FPS drop in certain places of the game world, it happens to me in WvW and Lion’s Arch, it also happens when I get involved in huge battles with more than 20 or 25 players.

Hardware Settings.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 @2.66 Ghz
Ram: Corsair XMS3 4GB (2×2GB) DDR3 1333 MHz. (I’ll buy another set of 2 modules of the same RAM in 2 weeks).
GPU: Asus Geforce GTX 560 Ti 1GB GDDR5.
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits.
Display Monitor: Currently using a COBY Television as a monitor with HDMI.
Display Resolution: 1920×1080.
Driver Version: 306.23.

My system is not overclocked, it has a good ventilation build and I can run most of the latest games in high/ultra settings. Sometimes I have to set all the graphic settings of the game at the minimum quality in order to play in WvW with my guild, or when I’m facing a chain of events with a lot of people. I’ll be happy to know if there’s a solution to this because it’s a problem to my game-play experience in such places.

Thanks in advance for your help, I’ll be ready to follow any instructions that helps me with this subject. And by the way sorry for my bad English it’s not native, if I made a typo let me know because it’ll help me in the future.

Most likely this is expected in areas where there is a large amount of players moving about. The CPU is being bottlenecked. There isn’t much that can be done to improve performance as with WvW the fps varies from 15-45 depending on CPU.

What driver version are you on? I’m beginning to regret taking the launcher’s recommendation (to upgrade) when I started a couple months back.

Thankfully its mostly reared its head in WvW, but its a big downer as I was just starting to get into that. But even on lowest video settings I’m getting slide shows in keeps now. :-( Just a few weeks ago I was fine on medium settings (most of the time anyway) and had an absolute blast.

5fps indicates a huge bottleneck on your rig.

it likely means your running intergrated or very old/slow GPU
and/or
are running a very old/slow cpu.

Best idea, if your spending that much on a game …upgrade your rig. Honestly spending that much on special editions of games usualy means your a keen gamer so keeping your rig upto date is essential.

Indeed its your CPU.

Even top notch cpu’s with OC’s drop in FPS .. Even one such as my own (see sig) drops fps due to the way GW2 uses its threads.

Bassicaly if you want better fps you will need ot upgrade your CPU/Motherboard/Ram. If your wondering ..i always sugest at minimum a Intel i5 2550k OC to as close as u can get it to 4.5ghz. That will pritty much run GW2 as good as it can be run, and for a good price for a gaming rig.

Nvidia 460M with driver version 9.18.13.697 released back on 10/2/12

I have yet to have any of the slowdown issues discussed in any of the assorted threads regarding the topic. What I do have on occasion is a slow re-render of environment, where I will see a low res version of the terrain while moving during large WvW fights, and it doesn’t immediately update to the high res version but I have always assumed that was more to do with the fact I’m running this on a relatively low powered laptop card rather than a driver issue/software issue.

My only suggestion beyond updating to a rollback driver would be to try using http://www.razerzone.com/gamebooster to help optimize all your settings. This is more a just in case step as it is a great way to make sure you can eliminate any client side issues from the equation. I don’t find that it actually improves game performance in many cases as like most gamers I know to shut off other programs, etc. I usually only run it right after I make a system change to make sure I didn’t overlook anything.

Well from that list your pritty much gunna have to upgrade the lot of it. You cant upgrade just 1 thing becouse it will ether a) not fit/incompatable ..or b) be bottlenecked by everything else.

Now if you from the UK you will likely have to spend around £600 to build a new rig.
In the US i think the same would probably cost around $750 .. though sales might be on so maybe less.

Bassicaly a worthy upgrade to play GW2 at it best (which isnt exactly great to begin with tbh) would be.

Intel i5 2550k or 3570k cpu + Motherboard + 8gb 1600mhz DDR3 RAM + Evo 212 cooler. 600w Powersupply. If you dont already have a Sata Optical and Sata HDD you will need those since IDE isnt used anymore. And ofcourse good Graphics card like a Nvidia 560ti.

Hi,

I love what I’ve played of this game, but it’s been a really bumpy ride, and hard to enjoy it. My FPS seems to range from the low teens to about mid 20s and never really goes above that, it’s making the game really hard to play.

My system specs are as follows:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz
Evga Nforce 680i SLI
8GB RAM
Evga Nvidia GTX 480
Windows Vista X64 Ultimate

I know my processor is hamstringing me somewhat, but looking on the forums, seems like other people are getting anywhere from 20fps to 60fps depending on the area in game with the same proc. Why are my FPS so low?!?

I have literally the exact same setup, except a 560ti 1GB, and windows 7 x64.
About the same performance as you (maybe +10fps at the most, but that’s really pushing it)

Decreasing shadows gives me the only performance boost it seems, regardless of the resolution I play in.

To ask a few things (obvious things).
Updated drivers?

Full defrag lately?

Using ‘Razer’ Game booster at all?’

Cleaned processor fan/heatsink, and reseated all things. RAM/gfx card and cpu?

These things could be hammering you lol but let me know

Pretty recently, but I’ll make sure

Full defrag lately?

I don’t think I’ve ever defragged, does that really make a difference with GW2?

Using ‘Razer’ Game booster at all?’

Never heard of it until just now, is it really useful?

Cleaned processor fan/heatsink, and reseated all things. RAM/gfx card and cpu?

Haven’t tried this yet, although I’m not too excited about reseating my processor/dealing with thermal paste, etc. But I’ll definitely reseat the GPU and make sure everything’s dusted and such.

Thanks for the suggestions.

In what areas are you getting smooth performance? In what areas is it poorer?

In general PvE, just running around with a few people around, you should be doing fine. If you go into WvW or join a huge crowded event or something, your framerate is going to tank (with that processor, 20 FPS might be a bit generous). Even if you had a brand-new Core i5, you’d maybe see ~30 FPS in the busiest places. If the behavior you’re seeing is like that, that’s unfortunately expected.

Erodorn. Its your cpu thats holding you back ..hence why changing grpahics settings isnt helping much .. (except maybe LOD/Shadows/Reflections, since they are affected by CPU)

Anyway for an uograde to run GW2 good ur looking at this:

2550k/3570k + Motherboard + 8gb DDR3 1600mhz RAm + Evo 212 Cooler ( then OC as close to 4.5ghz as u can). GPU wise you can use ur current one.

OC is key here ..even the best Intel cpu out wont run very good (in heavy populated areas) with GW2 unless its OC’d. GW2 takes alot of performance from single thread performance ..so it doesnt matter how many cores you have above 4 ..its the strength and speed of the single thread that matters. Hence why AMD dont do as wel las Intel with GW2.

I dont really speak computer, so did no understand how useless my computer was for this game. There goes a wasted 80 bucks :/ Lesson learned and such I guess.

$750 would be like the ideal system to run GW2. You don’t really have to go that far to get a playable system. You can build systems for ~$350 (example)

Now there are also the options of buying a used computer for less if you are on a strict budget and know what to look for. You won’t get the best system, but for sure it will be able to play better than 5fps. I got a old AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ system worth less than $150 on used market and even it can get 15-25FPS.

btw chances of refund are very low especially after its opened and used.

I have a Q6600 machine but overclocked to 3.2GHZ. I am able to get 40-60FPS in PVE, but cities like Lion Arch it drops to ~20fps.

However, I also built another system and using a 3570K 4.2GHZ and saw my FPS jump 2-3×.

But your machine should be able to break 20fps in PVE world. Something might be finicky with your triple GPU setup. Try playing with one 680.

Your system isn’t balanced and definitely upside down for GW2. You have 3 monster videocards in your unit and a very old quad. An old quad isn’t close to a new one, it’s just not about having a quad. The newer quads are a full 3 times faster then yours, that’s a whole k.i.t.t.e.n. load faster.

Another Q6600 here, doing relatively fine except in WvW or other areas with large (15+) number of active players. Lion’s Arch has been fine though, most of the PCs are both scattered and not doing any activity that requires a ton of status updates (unlike in a fight).

Other parts of the spec: Win7 x64 Home (not much else installed except Steam etc and a bunch of voice comms apps), 8 gig mem, a ‘hybrid’ HDD (basically an extra large cache – performance has been similar to a WD Raptor for half the cost), and a 550 Ti I believe (on reflection I should have stayed with the 8800 GT – this was probably a downgrade). Also, a large heatsink from OCZ and the original (full tower) Cosmos case. :-)

As I said, Lion’s Arch and general solo roaming (medium settings) – fine. Me and many mobs (sometimes a few players) – fine, a hiccup now and then perhaps. Me and many players – not fine. :p So I’d agree that we’re CPU bound in some way, but specifically due to the number of player updates that come in and need to be rendered. I’m tempted to OC back to 2.8 again and see how that works out.

Just thought I’d give everyone an update. I’m not sure what changed between when I was playing the game before and when I picked it up afterposting this message, but my performance increased dramatically. I can now run the game at 2560×1600 with everything maxed out while doing PvE and still get playable frame rates. I’m pretty sure my processor’s still bottlenecking my performance, as the frame rate doesn’t change much no matter what I do, yet isn’t dramatically high, but this is a huge improvement.

I figure i’d reply to this merged thread:

GFX: GTX 670 OC’d (tops out at a steady 1246 mhz in most combat)
CPU: sandy bridge I-7 OC’d to 4.5ghz
16 gigs DDR3-1866 PC3-14900 (the controller for this is also slightly oc’d)
SSD with the highest read/write speed I could find on the market w/o sacrificing my first born and grandparents.

Some FPS history:

GW2 At launch: 75 fps (dipping to 50 in 40+ man zergs in queensdale)
GW2 post 11/15: 59 FPS

Current:
Normal performance in small to medium scale combat is 50 fps, dipping to 40 fps when the screen has more spell effects than terrain showing. As soon as events scale over about 30 people, however, it becomes a nightmare.

Below is a screenshot of my toon doing shatterer.

Note the FPS, unterutilized cpu cores, and gpu running 30% under maximum.

That horrific 20 i’m seeing (complete with random stutters) would probably kill me if I tried to take my D/D ele zerg-diving in W^3

I look forward to anything ANet can do to make GW2 actually utilize my system, as it seems to be ignoring most of the cores right now, and while the graphics are fine, the game seems to struggle coping with many targets on screen…
