Guild Wars 2 Setup Installer crashes
Hi Tsumake!
Thanks for attaching the Game Advisor report within your first response! I would like to rule out the possibility that there is another program interfering with the game connection. To do this, we use a Windows command called “MSCONFIG.”
Please note, this command will not uninstall any applications from your computer. All MSCONFIG does is prevent these applications from automatically starting when Windows boots up.
To do this:
1. Press and hold the Windows key and then hit the R key. This should bring up the Run dialog box.
2. Type “MSCONFIG” without the quotes, and click “OK.” This should open the System Configuration Utility.
3. Click on the “Services” tab and check the “Hide All Microsoft Services” check box near the bottom, then click the “Disable All” button. (You MUST click “Hide all Microsoft Services”)
4. Next go to the “Startup” tab and click the “Disable All” button.
5. Once these items are all disabled, click the “OK” button and you will get a prompt to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.
6. Once you return to Windows, please try connecting to the game again. If your issue is not resolved by using MSCONFIG, please generate a new Game Advisor report prior to disabling MSCONFIG. That way, we can see what, if anything wasn’t disabled by these steps.
To reverse these settings, simply run MSCONFIG again and click “Normal Startup” on the first window labeled “General.”
Note: If you need a specific application to run with Windows but still want to use MSCONFIG, just follow the above instructions and on step 4, re-check any application you feel needs to start with Windows. Examples would be wireless connection software, mouse or keyboard applications or even security applications. Please note that security applications can often be a contributing factor to such issues. If you haven’t done so already, please also disable any Anti-virus, Firewall or other security applications for testing purposes.
Hi,
I tried disabling the services but to no avail. Here is the new text:

2) put a Gw2Setup.exe in it

Hi All,
I just recently purchased GW2. I downloaded the setup client, but it crashes before I can do anything. I’ve attached a system report and a screenshot of the error. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
This fix is currently working. I completely uninstalled Gw2 and re downloaded the client.
Steps
1)Created GuildWars2 folder in the directory where i wanted to install.
2)Put the Gw2Setup.exe in the folder and rename it to Gw2.exe.
3)Right click the Gw2.exe and click create shortcut.
4)Right click the shortcut and click properties.
5)Add this line to your target, after the quotes :::Example:::“C:\Program Files (x86)\GuildWars2\Gw2.exe” -StreamingClient

This worked believe it or not, just wanted to come back and play some Gw2 and this issue occured where installer wouldn’t install.
Tsumake: That error message seems odd. The only thing I can imagine is one of your registry values being misconfigured. Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit windows? If you are unsure you can follow the steps here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/find-out-32-or-64-bit
amis: Where specifically does it freeze? Could you screenshot it? There is an issue that went out today that would cause the installer to freeze. We’re working on fixing that, but you should not run into that if you renamed the installer. Patching also seems to have been a bit of a roller-coaster today, so could you try again?
THANK YOU Olorenve.8327 SO much, after trying for 2 hrs, as I was almost about to give up, I came here and I just followed your instructions, crossed my fingers and… IT WORKED!!! My husband now thinks I’m insane because of my happy dancing, but THANK YOU!!!
Olorenve.8327 you’re great. This just fixed the issue I was having with the installer starting, patching once and then stopping and crashing at 0KB upon relaunching itself. Thanks dude.
Worked for me as well can someone sticky this fix.
This fix is currently working. I completely uninstalled Gw2 and re downloaded the client.

I just tried this fix and it’s currently working, thanks!

Johan, I don’t think they will answer… their posts are from years ago…
Aens / Ellantriel / Nao To Mori / Saelyth. Commander
Guias de Raids en español / Spanish raiding guides

Ow, that’s what I get for not looking at the time stamps.

But there are other two (at least) topics, talking about the current issue, where the Gw2Setup.exe only downloads the initial ~9.5MB, then the window disappears, reappears, and freezes with “Downloading 0KB (0KB/sec)”.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Gw2-setup-freeze-crash/first
The “fix” mentioned in all these topics, where the download actually works when one renames Gw2Setup.exe into Gw2.exe, seems a little odd and not as a permanent solution.

It most definitely isn’t. It’s a known problem and it’s being worked on.
Thanks for informing us! I really appreciate it. I’m eager to install guild wars 2, I hope it will be fixed quickly.
Omg, after a day of misery after buying t5his game and wanting top play i know finnaly got it to work thanks to this post

I’m having troubles downloading the game itself, I reinstalled Gw2, but I get stuck on “Downloading 0 KB (0 kb/s)” I hope that I can get some answer back on this
He already replied above omg. They’re working on the issue.
seim proplem and i try renaming first time work but after thad not workd
i one ad one ting i notes when i reinstald i notes thad it dosent give option where to but to it instal to where it is
Renaming doesn’t work.
-fix doesn’t work
-Streaming (bla bla something) doesn’t work.
Putting setup in completely new place. Crashes.
Nothing new.
I am having the same issue.I tryed the reset with Run ip config,UAC,run as admin..afther that i even reinstalled my Windows 7 64×.The only work around for now is the change from GW2Setup.exe to GW2.exe.It just stops when it is downlading the client and i dont even get till the screen to select where to install it,it freezes and it asks me to close down the window.
I hope you will fix this.
Used VPN:
-German -> Nothing – 28kb sent
-China -> Nothing – 28kb sent
-Australia -> Nope – 28kb sent
-Atlanta -> “Showed connection error, retry” aaaand…. NOPE – 36kb sent
-Boston -> Nope – 31kb sent
-Brazil-> Nope
-France-> Nope
Oh hell with this.
This is some joke.
The TraceRoute is not even MAKING IT to the anet servers.
I see my connection going out, ending on the VPN, but doesn’t go any further.
Not with original gw2.exe , and neither with gw2setup change to gw2.exe
The only one more thing I can do is to leave my pc for entire night and day while I will be at work. Maybe it will finally “Initialize” something.

Can we have an eta about the fix? Because this wait is really annoying.

Tried asking that in their social networking pages along with a screen shot (I’ll post mine)… both got deleted. I take it they don’t want their sponsors know they messed things up with this patch.

Looks like there’s a forum thread going about it, then, so you’re good! Our PAX East sponsors can’t really help here on Facebook any further than that.
I don’t know why this works but who ever figured it out is my new hero!!! I just took the client and pasted it in the folder for GW2 under my programs and changed the name of the file to GW2.exe and it works!
It works at the beginning Ryan. We all tested it. After a while the problems kick in…
I can’t get it working either, eta. on new GW2setup?
The renaming “fix” worked for me (although in the past I was able to install the game fine, but not this most recent time. The setup file would just freeze at 0 kb/sec)
This fix works, but you can’t select an installation directory, it will install the game in the map with the renamed file. It’s totally broken.
I did install via the rename fix earlier, played and quit, and now i have to download the whole thing again..

This needs to be fixed ASAP, new people coming in for the expansion and they can’t even install the game normally.
Anet you are about to cut off your own foot if you don’t get this fixed by the month or two before the expansion comes out. SOL all day long. (yes this is a time to send out a massive email to all account holders giving an ETA of fix. Or when it is fixed because I cant play the game Im not coming back for a few months.) There are Tons of f2p and other mmorpgs.
The installer should be fixed with the patch that just went out.
Woke up, and went to check proggres before going to work.
The client was still “initializing”.

Now the download is starting.
I better grab my daily fast since this still work.
Ok nvm.
Thank You for FIX ofc.
But now there is thread about FPS loos.
I’ve got FPS loose as well.

The installer works now, just gotta wait for several more hours while my game re-installs…
Client works,thank you for the fix.
Thanks much for the fix! -
Is there a thread for how to remove the bad GW2 install?

problem still exists, client crashes instantly. tried all the above
