That to me looks like a graphics failure. Maybe a corrupted GPU driver installation?

Make sure you do a clean uninstall. Do it in Safe Mode so you don’t get the black screen and then can’t do anything.

Alright so device manager via safe mode? and then just roll back the drivers or do I need to uninstall then get the disc out and reinstall?

Just to confirm, so maybe Anet will look into the issue more seriously. Don’t think it’s your computer or anything you can do to fix it. Might mitigate it temporarily with lower settings, but honestly that hasn’t helped that I can tell.

Same thing happening to the 4 highest end development systems in our computer lab (never had any problems prior, except for an nvidia issue a few months back). Anet’s new optimization routines appear to have a memory bug. Problem with randomly crashing during major action on PC (zergs, etc).

Here’s a similar thread discussing the PC crashing since OOM and EoTM:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/bugs/Crashing-since-OoM

FWIW, Same optimization issue is completely crippling OSX versions during fights, with frame rates dropping to 3 during any motion, regardless of settings.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/mac/FPS-DROP-WITH-PATCH

Can’t tag up to command at home since it’s unplayable in battle on the mac. Glad it’s at least playable at my office, but they need to fix the crashing. They officially acknowledged the osx issue, hopefully they will address the PC issue.

Nvidia driver wipe and update helped with an earlier issue, (and may still have been a good thing to do) but since the optimization patch, it’s no longer the only problem .

Think that first line tells you have run out of memory, only 8MB usable on heap. (edited: had wrong unit here)

I think this game is memory leaking, look at the hideous usage of your memory.
Actually I have same problem as you, getting random crashes during EU prime-time, despite on what map I am on. And many people actually crash at the same time, since one time I relogged back to the game dead with another player, asked and verified it. Also on TeamSpeak, certain people, including me, crash/freeze together.

How is it game causing? The game gives you different reason every time, not even sure itself what’s happening.

  • First it blames your hardware,
  • then it confesses its game data is corrupted, offering you to repair it,
  • then it states that your system has run out of memory,
  • then it tells that access violation in memory has happened,
  • then it fails to handle the exception and windows does it itself, notifying heap corruption,
  • then it simply freezes in some loop and you have to close the game from Task Manager,
  • then the game simply closes by itself,
  • and finally you get some random assertion messages, likely caused by corrupted memory.

And I did try everything:

  • Updated all the drivers in my system,
  • Even updated my system and video BIOS,
  • Repaired the game data numerous times,
  • Using those recommended graphic settings noted down in this section,
  • Turned audio quality to minimal just in case,
  • Tried both… best performance and appearance really makes no difference in crashing matter,
  • Monitored hardware temperatures, which are all OK,
  • Finally, right now, reinstalling the game in hopes that -repair is unable to repair at all, however, as seen in previous post, that didn’t help.

And my system:

  • Asus Sabertooth Z87 (XMP)
  • Intel Core i7 4770K @ 3.5GHz (steps up to 4.3GHz), cooled by Corsair H100i
  • Asus GeForce GTX690, 4GB GDDR5
  • 2 x Corsair XMS3 4GB DDR3 @ 800MHz
  • Corsair AX860i
  • 64-bit Windows 7

No problem running Crysis 3 or ARMA 3.

game crashing is coming from 6 reasons . 1) corrupted game dat file . 2) not updated drivers or gpu drivers conflict between amd, nvidia and intel 3) not updated directx 4) if the hard disk is failing or have bad sectors 5) problem with memory modules and finally 6 ) other applications activity that creates problem in game like virus or antivirus

check these and you will solve your problem

This will sound like it is coming from left field but please try testing this….

Turn off your Page File entirely in Windows and try running the game…. I did this on my system (16g ram) and saw major game improvements…

Common to servers / systems that are “working harder than windows really wants them too” (SQL Servers and such) the page file actually fights with “real time memory” and if can slow / cause system problems.

I had the same problem on an expensive laptop and it was solved by adjusting the CPU usage limit from the factory setting of 100% on the high end to 95-99%. I was skeptical at first when tech support suggested this but immediately the issue was solved and has not happened since.

I hope this helps you

I WOULD NOT disable paging ! (Very bad advice) There is a reason that paging is in place (virtual memory and no longer needing contiguous storage space). If you turn that off, and run into a case scenario where you need to load more into RAM than you have available in your machine (easily possible if you use more than one program at a time) you will crash your machine and you will crash it hard. Basically by disabling paging you take away the ability of a modern OS to use disk space to expand memory. It may “appear” faster when you do this at first, but you can run into many crash scenarios, and some applications simply won’t work after you disable the pagefile since they are programed with the requirement of using it.

If you are having problems with thrashing (where page faults are occurring so often as to almost grind the performance to a halt) then you should look at adjusting the pagefile size, not disabling paging. The pagefile size should be minimum of whatever the peak commit is (Virtual memory peak commit) and the maximum should be double that. For example, you have 6GB of ram, and peak commit is 8GB (2GB for virtual). The minimum of your pagefile should then be 2GB and the maximum be double that at 4GB. This will prevent thrashing from occurring that often.

TLDR; DO NOT DISABLE PAGING! Horrible advice that can ruin your system….

It wont ‘ruin’ your system.

But its not a good idea to disable paging, ALOT of MS services rely on Paging and if paging is disabled they don’t work as efficiently as they could/should. Superfetch being one of them.

Also, unless you have ECC memory, disabling Paging will cause memory instability over time. The new Windows memory manager sends memory faults to its page file to be sorted out, to keep your memory clean. With the page file disabled, this feature is also disabled. You will crash more often with the page file disabled.

Another solution or 2….:
1. Moving your page file to another hard drive entirely, not partition but entire different hard drive – this will help if you have problems with your hard drive, or possibly to much / fast access to the same location as eveything else.
1. Also you can make your page file only 512meg, so that only windows system itself uses the page file and your game will run in live memory….

They are both marked as 1. because each is an independant solution that could be used together…
Making your virtual memory greater invites Windows to dump all it wants into said file, which can make your computer slower…

Moving your page file to a different physical disk is a solution, however dropping the page file down to say, 512MB, is not a solution.

Windows will dump anything it wants to page, no matter how big or small, the smaller it is the more it has to flush that data out.

So leave the page file alone in regards to size, changing it or disabling it is NOT good. However, you CAN move it to a different disk (I run mine on a 64G USB3.0 Flash Drive)

You put your page file on a USB Thumb Drive, and you are saying that is better??
Flash Technology only can handle so many read and writes before it starts having issues, you are sure to burn out a USB drive doing so, making your page file corrupt, causeing more problems…

There are many writeups discussing not even putting page files on SSD drives because they are built on Flash Technology…

No page file is safer than USB page file storage…

Set your paging file to 3 times your physical RAM. (min and max page file size needs to be the same)
Putting the paging file on another physical disk WILL help.
Update ALL drivers. Use the driver utility whenever possible to make sure you get the latest drivers.
Make sure Windows is fully updated.

Not having a paging file WILL NOT mess with your system, SSDs can not have paging files put on them nor can they be de-fragmented because paging files and defragmenting will reduce the life of SSDs alarmingly fast. SSDs only have about 10,000 write cycles and a page file will chew that up in a week or two.

And check your case fans and make sure they are working and blowout your heat sinks. Heat will mess with EVERYTHING in a PC and make you think you have problems elsewhere when all you need to do is clean/replace a fan or two.

Completely False.

1. Windows7 and 8.x are designed to run with a page file. Infact several of its services require a pagefile to run. Example, SuperFetch.

2. The Only SSDs that have the lifecycle issues are MLC, which are not even sold to consumers anymore. TLC is what 99% of the consumer SSDs are now, and they live WAY beyond that small 10,000 write cycle you are talking about. Your statement was true for MLCs, it is NOT true for SLC or TLC type SSDs.

3. There is no logical reason not to run your Page file on your SSD. If you have a modern SSD that is based on SLC or TLC logic boards, supports TRIM, then you have nothing to worry about. Most SSDs will burn out in 3-5years anyway, page file or not. So might as well get the best out of your system

4. SSDs do not fragment, Fragmentation is only found on Spindles due to how the disk is magnetized and how its controller+heads access the surface area. SSDs are flash based storage there for have no Fragmentation. Defragging an SSD will do more harm then even running a Page file on it.

First I would like to say as creator of this thread thank you for your contributions whether it was on here or through a private message. I appreciate the feedback and I hope we continue to keep this thread alive so we can find a permanent solution to the issue.

So far I haven’t seen anything worth doing as far as troubleshooting EXCEPT the clean installation of my drivers, which I DID in fact do. I haven’t had an overly extensive amount of time to play this week but reset night (Friday @ 5pm server time) will be a great test to see if the issue still exists or if the clean driver installation fixed the crashing issue.

I am NOT going to modify my page file in any aspect, because it seems like a risk especially considering the variation of answers from you guys both for and against it. Also, I saw someone suggest turning off SLI. I do not want to do that and I shouldn’t have to. I paid $800.00 for two GTX 670’s in December 2012 and I should be able to enjoy them.

From a hardware standpoint I should be able to run this game fully maxed out on one monitor @ 1920×1080. I play games that are far more demanding of my system and I have never had any problems. At all points before I crash, my system runs flawlessly and the crashes are instant. I’m not sure if slower systems go through a crashing process but I’m just returned to my desktop with the crashing details.

I’m a player who has played WvW @ least for 95% of the 3,500 hours that I have played this game but in PvE I have never crashed. Since I started playing GW2 in January 2013, I have only had two instances where crashing was an issue (this is the first time I posted my issue on the forums). The first time it went away with a patch update (or so it seemed). I would love to know the root of this issue and if anyone knows how to read the crashing report’s technical information and explain it to me in basic terms that would be great!

IF I HAVE ANOTHER CRASH I WILL UPDATE THIS THREAD WITH THE DETAILS BUT I WONT BE ABLE TO GIVE MY SYSTEM A TEST UNTIL TONIGHT OR TOMORROW.

On the highlighted paragraph. This is not possible on any hardware for this game. While crashing shouldn’t be happening, running full detail’s at 1080p has been leading to issues. You will need to turn down Memory based settings in the game to stop crashing and get to smooth performance in WvW (Specifically the Character Limit and Quality Settings, and Reflections on Sky/Terrain).

The game is single threaded due to the DX9 Rendering engine. So to get the max performance of other PC games you would need a CPU clocked at 10Ghz+ to obtain that with full details in this game. Which is not possible today.

As far as SLI, disabling it should be ONE of the troubleshooting steps you take. I doubt that is the cause for the crashing, but if the game makers updated something that affects SLI that is one test you need to perform.

Next time you crash, I hope you are running Monitoring software (GPU-Z, CPU-Z, Coretemp) and include those reports with your Crash report.m

Perfectly understandable that you don’t want to disable something you paid $800 for the sake of troubleshooting. As sirsquishy stated above, could you at least try this temporary? Also, have you tried submitting a support ticket as well? It might take awhile to get a response but maybe they will be able to offer some more advice that hasn’t been posted here yet.

I believe this is the same issue I have. The error log looks similar enough. Support went as far as telling me to disable startup programs and services, and when I played WvW one night with those changes, I did not experience a crash. However, once I reverted those settings, my game proceeded to crash as usual. It seems that there is no real solution for this terribly optimized game.

Software conflicts aren’t really unusual and it’s very difficult for programmers to try and create software that won’t conflict with other software.

For the OP:

I highly recommend that you do disable a ton of start-up programs and (if necessary) services related to them. Looking at your log; I would be surprised if your computer didn’t behave somewhat strange and have other issues outside of this game.

Look at this from your log:

—> System Memory <—
Physical: 24656MB/32714MB 75%
Paged: 56016MB/65428MB 85%
Virtual: 257MB/ 4095MB 6%
Load: 24%
CommitTotal: 9411MB
CommitLimit: 65428MB
CommitPeak: 9454MB
SystemCache: 25368MB
HandleCount: 39571
ProcessCount: 106 <—— Wow!

This shows you have 106 processes running – which is quite high. I repair a lot of PCs and I have to say that the highest I’ve seen to date is mid-nineties. I recommend that you try the game again after shutting down all unneeded start-up programs using MSCONFIG, then reboot.

I had the same problem on an expensive laptop and it was solved by adjusting the CPU usage limit from the factory setting of 100% on the high end to 95-99%. I was skeptical at first when tech support suggested this but immediately the issue was solved and has not happened since.

I hope this helps you

I too filed a support ticket, and got this. I’ve only been running it two days, but I haven’t crashed in LA, or at tequatl or the wurm (maxed overflows).

Basically they suspect it’s an issue with unlocked processors. Capping processor use at 99% maximum usage should not really adversely affect your performance, might be worth a try.

Thanks for getting back to us!

Your CPU has a built-in Turbo Boost option, which will raise the cores speeds based on load. This is a feature of the CPU model you purchased, marked with the (k) for Intel or the “AMD Black Edition” for AMD. Any CPU’s of these series are able to run faster than intended, automatically, without you doing or changing anything. This can often lead to freezing or crashing in applications that are not expecting this to occur.

Since this situation simulates over-clocking, I’d still like to try to disable this, and for that I have included some instructions for a work around below:
•Go into Power options (Control panel → Hardware and Sound → Power Options) and click “Change plan settings” near your plan
•Then click on “Change advanced power settings.”
•Scroll down to “Processor power management” and expand it.
•Expand “Maximum processor state” and modify the setting to 99%. Be sure to also set the minimum processor state to something below the maximum. I recommend 5%.
•Then simply click “Apply” and “OK.”

After this has been done try launching the game again. When you do, the turbo boost feature should refrain from kicking in and that may resolve the issue you’ve been experiencing.

God I don’t know where to begin. First, MLC, which is 2 bit per flash cell, is still the predominate flash being used in drives today.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/ocz-vector-150-vertex-460_11.html#sect0

Second, TLC (3 bit per) has a lower write cycle limit than MLC (and MLC has a lower write limit compared to SLC). The difference is there are better ways now to manage this limitation.

http://techreport.com/review/25889/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-500tb-update

Note that it’s only the Samsung 840 which uses TLC that is starting to eat into it’s spare area because of write failures.

Third, the above link also shows 500TB of writes. Using a harsh JEDEC write pattern of 40GB of writes per day, that’s 22 years of writes. And both the MLC and TLC based SSDs going strong.

So enough of this MLC flash is crap.

On your other points you are right. No reason to shunt the page file or other Window’s system files or User area to a conventional drive. And no reason to disable the page file EVER.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

RIP City of Heroes

Judging by the last bits of the report it seems like the game is having trouble loading various models for skills and skill effects. The first thing I would do is check your hard drive for any bad sectors. You can find the disk diagnostic utility at: http://support.wd.com/product/download.asp?level1=6&lang=en

I’m not sure which version you have so you’ll have to check whether it’s WD Black or WD Green ect. Try a long scan and see if it finds any problems. If that checks out good I would move all your screenshots of GW2 to a folder on your desktop and then uninstall the game, defrag your hard drive, and then reinstall the game again.

Still having this issue, does Arena Net or anyone have an answer to this problem yet? I have talked to a lot of people saying it seems more focused towards Nvidia cards, anyhow, someone please help!

You are peaking the applications 32bit memory mask. you NEED to reduce your ingame settings (Character limit, Resolution, SuperSample, and Texture Mapping/FXAA).

With the settings I run (high on all, native sampling, Medium Shaders/Shadows, And char Limit to Low) I never go above 2.3GB of ram for the gw2.exe application (verifiable with Performance monitor in task manager).

Reduce the foot print that GW2 uses and you will probably fix your crashing.

I don’t always experience frequent crashing, but when I do, it throws ^ this error in arenanet.log.

OK, that was supposed to be funny, granted; but seriously, I’ve only crashed on average once per day (vs. “frequent” crashing), and it has been in Lion’s Arch zergs since Living Story started… and the contents in the above post have been thrown every time.

For those who say drive issues: I MOVED (different hard drive) and REDOWNLOADED (yah the entire thing) .dat file, and it doesn’t stop the error.

In my case, it’s so infrequent (and LS is changing soon, anyway), I shrugged it off and chalked it up to a corrupted file within the game’s resource blob. I mention this to perhaps reduce some of the potential troubleshooting steps folks make MomentOfWeakness go through.

So.. I crashed again but here it goes let me know if the same issue is being stated here or an alternative problem:

You REALLY should be disabling a lot of those processes. The more of those you have running, the more issues you’re going to have, especially if some of those processes barely qualify as QoL tasks. I’m sitting at 92 processes myself right now purely because i’m installing peripheral drivers, and when done, i’m going to be axing as many of them as I can.
Second, cutting out those processes can also fix that horrifying memory issue. Seriously, how in kitten-loving hell do you manage 25GB of memory usage at once? What the hell are you running with guild wars? Servers? 3 different CAD programs at once? On top of that, you’re paging twice that amount. I dont think it has anything to do with guild wars, just the extremely high amount of what equates to digital kitten backing up.
That’s also a pretty large amount of pagefaults. Since you’re running 32GB of memory, I’d suggest some diagnostic tests to see if any of the boards are failing. If not, disable/remove 1/2 the memory and set the paging file to 8GB. Additionally, go through services.msc (not MSCONFIG, which is a temporary method, good for testing, not good for “standard” use), google every service that’s listed as running or automatic startup, and disable anything that’s not essential or a QoL service you want.

Tl;Dr- fix the issues with your memory and you might see the problems go away. That’s a disgusting amount of used RAM on a desktop that I’d only expect to see on server machines.
