Q:

Hi. Over like the last month, i’ve had some insane ping issues. Over the years, i’ve played pretty stable at under a hundred ping— but, recently that all changed.

You see, i recently reinstalled the game. Soon after that, my ping suffered. Now, i’ve got something really strange going on. I generally play at a couple hundred ping. But, occasionally it spikes— for no reason.

In the middle of a PvP match, suddenly i’ve got well over a thousand ping. This instability has left the game almost unplayable.

If i restart the game— or wait a while, it goes down again— before it spikes up again, half an hour later.

I don’t think its my own internet-speed that’s the problem— as i said, i used to play under a hundred ping. On “ookla”, i get a download speed of 25 Mbps. And i’m not having internet issues elsewhere. I can easily see 4k videos on youtube etc.

So, the question is: what is wrong with my game, and how can i fix it? I’ve tried the repair client, didn’t work either.

In case it’s relevant, i’m using a Ryzen 1700 Processor, 16GB ram and a rx480 GPU, with windows 10. I’m playing at the “Far Shiverpeaks” server, and i’m based in Norway.

Thanks in advance for your answer! :)

Just so you know, when you run those speed tests, they ping the closest best server. It’s not meant to prove your ping is fine, it’s meant to show what your speed is. They don’t want you to have ping when testing your speed, because it will slow it down and not show the “true value”.

TLDR: Speed tests are useless to show what the ping is to a gaming server.

Here’s my connection to Frankfurt— where the game servers are based, i think. The speed test was mostly to demonstrate that my internet isn’t too bad. But, why is my connection to GW2 so unstable recently?

Because you seem to think that everything to Frantfurt goes to the same place and hits everything the same. It doesn’t. If it did the internet would be a snail and there wouldn’t be a point to having anything faster then 10Mbps download speed.

If you want to actually show that GW2 is having a problem, go to the map you are lagging on, get the IP, and trace route to that IP. It will show you were the issue is.

TLDR: Speed test to a server in the same city still won’t show you that it’s the games fault.

Been having a very similar issue, with identical symptoms. Have you tried doing /ip in-game and then pasting the input into a program like WinMTR? Supposedly that data can help support track down the problem, but I my ticket hasn’t been answered yet so I can’t confirm.

Actually this has been happening to me as well lately, kind of really bad this last week. I have never had issues like this before and I play the game almost every day. No need to be jerks about it, it is happening, and it is not on my end either. before this week’s lag problems I alway have pretty good ping in game, like 50-100, but lately been getting bad spikes while playing as well, and IT IS NOT MY INTERNET. I play other games online as well, not having any issues on any of them except for Guild Wars 2. Out of nowhere I will spike at over 1000 ping and get server kicked sometimes. Like I said I play this game very often and have never have problems like this until this past week, so it is coming from Anet’s end and they need to do something about it to fix, because it’s discouraging, waiting 15+ minutes for a map of teq to just get disconnected on the middle of it, annoying and discouraging to play when that happens.

It’s unfortunate, to see you guys are having this problem too. But, maybe that means anet will look into the problem. When you get it, can you please let us know about your results from the ticket you sent?

And yeah, i tried doing a trace-route— dunno how to interpret the results…

I have been getting huge lag spikes lately as well, I did a test to see if it was my ISP, no problems there, I was getting my full 25Mbs/10Mbs with ping of 6ms.

I found out my server ip while in game by typing /ip , then did a tracert to it.

From what I see it looks like there is a problem with a router that is giving uplink service through Level3 Communications, as can be see by my tracert to the North American server I am connected to at IP address 64.25.33.79:

9 7 ms 8 ms 7 ms ae55.bar2.Toronto1.Level3.net [4.28.138.45]
10 * * * Request timed out.
11 40 ms 40 ms 41 ms 4.59.197.34
12 40 ms 40 ms 40 ms 64.25.32-9.ncsoft.com [64.25.32.9]
13 42 ms 40 ms 40 ms 64.25.32-26.ncsoft.com [64.25.32.26]
14 42 ms 61 ms 41 ms 64.25.32-82.ncsoft.com [64.25.32.82]
15 40 ms 41 ms 40 ms 64.25.33-79.ncsoft.com [64.25.33.79]

As with any server/client communications, when you do not get a response in the time the client expects, all goes to heck in a hand basket…lag spikes, disconnects and all the totally not fun stuff, when you just want to go in and bust a few heads for a while.

They need to talk to Level 3 Communications and tell them to get the router fixed.

They don’t need to talk to Level 3, because they don’t own Level 3, nor does their ISP.

YOU can called your ISP and give them that same information, and YOUR ISP can do it. See, Anet can’t run the checks from your IP to the server. They can do the reverse, and help that way, but they don’t talk to your computer that way, so it wouldn’t help.

That track actually shows a perfectly healthy connection. That one spot that doesn’t respond? That’s just a router or something that isn’t sending back error messages when the “TTL” field in the IP packet — a counter for how many computers can touch it before throwing it away, to stop something looping forever — hits zero.

The hops following that are healthy — you have a nice, stable, 40-42ms round trip to the anet server hosting the map.

That doesn’t rule out a network problem, but it does say that it’s not a simple and instantly obvious issue from that traceroute you posted.

You actually start having issues at 8 and 9. Which isn’t Anet or their ISP. You might want to contact your ISP with this and ask them to forward the information.

If you are having trouble, https://www.pingplotter.com/fix-your-network will walk you through figuring out where on the network it happens. If that is the anet side, then a support ticket will help. If not, it might guide you to where you want to go to get it fixed.

It’s also the first thing support will ask you to do (though a friendlier guide and tool) if you get in touch, so why not save the time and do it first?

Here are my results, looks insane. Can’t really interpret it, though. my internet isn’t too bad, but why do i have such a horrible connection to the servers if not a issue at their end?

O_o that says you are less than 10ms away from the servers. I’m jealous!

Anyway, nothing there suggests a problem, but it’s not as comprehensive as pingplotter or winmtr statistics; could you use one of those to reproduce that? Specifically, it’s the packet loss percentage I’m looking for.
