If you’ve recently noticed an increase in latency or lag, please post in this thread with the following:

Your location: Netherlands
Time and date of incident (plus time zone): 15;00 – 01;00 CET. Doesn’t matter when I log in, it’s always there.
Game World: PVP / Desolation

Brief description of what you’re seeing: fps, latency all fine but still having ~2 sec delay on skills, or sometimes they don’t even cast at all. Blinks (ports) are impossible and at times other ppl rubberbanding. Makes the game pretty much unplayable… This only happening in gw2, others games/applications are working fine.

Nearly every day in the last few weeks the game is unplayable for about 1 hour or more in the evening. I have massive lags then, sometimes i had 200s delays, but most of the time the lags are shorter from 1-2s. It’s not possible to play the game normal with this delays on every skill and everything else (while typing in the chat or salvaging stuff and so on …). I never had this kind of lags for so a long time in the last years and i really hope for me and all the other german players, that someone is working on this problem.

for all fanboys: ITS A FACT, that many german GW2 player have massive Latency/Lag problems. Im playing on Elonafels and everytime i can see cry’s about Lags and unplaybilitie of the game.

For Check: We all can play other games without any problems. Many of the Players test it with WoW, like me and many other games. NO PROBLEMS to see!

Most of this Players are Customers of 1-2 ISP’s: Telekom and UnityMedia.

Its not important, if it is an ArenaNet-Issue or one of the ISP’s. The fact is, that it isnt our PC at home or our line. ArenaNet has to check the massive problems and has to communicate with us. That is what they would do, if the players are important for them. But NOTHING happens. We just got a thread about Lags etc in our german-forum and thats all. No communication, no solutions.

Facts for u ArenaNet:

My Server: Elonafels
ISP: 1&1 (reseller of telekom line’s)…so its Telekom
Location: Germany
Time and date of incident (plus time zone): every day from 17/18:00 pm GMT+1 until …dont know..i have to sleep sometimes
GameWorld: WvW, PvP, PvE

Just a Funfact: yesterday i was trying to play a round in pvp. The warmup was smoothly. The Match starts and boooom lags with 15seconds delay and more.

Played today since 6 am GMT and had absolutely no lag or packet loss. So either Telia has not enough infrastructure in place for prime time (when the lag/packet loss happens) or they activate some kind of filters – maybe for P2P traffic, it won’t be the first provider doing that – that affects GW2 during prime time.

ArenaNet, NCsoft, can you talk to these guys and sort things out? They are giving you and your customers horrible service quality.

Without the technical stuff and after thoroughly investigating this issue i have found the following:

- The lags and disconnection issues only affect the game server. Chat etc, whatever runs over the login server, is not affected. Thus, i can freely write and read guild chat while the game itself still has to decide if i get thrown onto the character selection screen or if it recovers.

- The issue only affects GW2, nothing else, thus the problem is not on my end.

- The issue doesn´t affect everyone at all, nor in the same scale, thus it most likely cannot be caused by GW2 servers.

- The issue can be completly resolved by using a VPN service, e.g. Pingzpper. That is the proof that it is not a problem which ArenaNet has caused or could solve on their own, i´d say.

TL;DR, everyone who has lag, disconnects, whatever during their prime time. Try Pingzapper! You can test it 30min for free and then you´ll get a forced disconnect after which you can use it another 30minutes and so on. If Pingzapper, with server set to one located in the EU for Europeans or one located in Asia or USA for the respective people, does indeed cure your problem, then its an issue based on your traffic routing and thus nothing you or ArenaNet can fix. However, if it does not help to clear your lag issue, then your lag issue is a different one.

Link to the homepage: http://pingzapper.com/

I can´t play without it anymore, especially during prime time. With pingzapper i have absolutely no issues anymore. Of course if Pingzapper works for you then any VPN client will do the trick. Pingzapper is my choice because it only applies to games, and thus doesn´t cost as much if you choose to buy premium access for unlimited connection time.

kitten this kitten
https://hide.me/en/ gives you a trial of 2gb free bandwidth which in my experience lasts me for about a month if i use it for GW2 only; when it’s over you can register with another e-mail and go again ad infinitum (granted you can’t choose a server so at rare occasions it might not fix the lag but it does for the most part)

other than that I often have massive lag and disconnects but seeing as no one gives a kitten about our problems i’ll stick with the vpn for now
not even an official statement as to what the problem might be and whether anyone is looking into it at all… great going
it’s ironic how they are hyping the expansion while all of this is going on, i can’t wait to experience challenging new latency issues and master the power of disconnects

If a VPN fixes the problem, you have proven that the problem is outside of ArenaNet’s control. They can complain to the network causing the problem, but it’s up to that network to fix it.

They probably haven’t said anything because they can’t do anything. Would you rather them give the standard response about the problem being outside of their own network and that you would need to contact your ISP? You can see WildStar’s last responses if you want, which is the same problem.

Yes, but that is a VPN applying to all of your network connections. And Pingzapper only affects the game itself, which is why i am using it. Anyways it was just a suggestion – you may use and suggest you find is better of course.

actually they can do something… yesterday lag for example was at ncsoft servers, it was only node where i had 100% packet los

Using your screenshot as an example:

You can’t judge a network solely by its ping. All a ping is really good for is checking if something is accessible and how long it takes. All those x/25 don’t really mean much because pings have a low priority and can be simply ignored, as seen with hop 9 and 11. Only dropping a few pings is more suspicious, but even then it could just be ping specific throttling rather than an overloaded router.

What you want to look at is the number next to the |. That shows a ping that was lost in between two hops – actual packet loss. Hop 6 to 7 doesn’t look too good, which is the EU-NA link.

But what if your pathping shows no problems? That’s the problem. Throttling doesn’t affect pings but forces you to drop packets. Throttling is a cheap alternative to network upgrades which are needed due to high bandwidth services gaining popularity. The rise of HD streaming (Netflix) for example destroyed older, highly populated networks.

Your pathping shows a route from Germany to the NA servers. Since there is nothing wrong with the NA servers, if you are experiencing problems with them, it’s definitely outside of ArenaNet’s control. You however appear to be on the EU servers, so I’m guessing you either transferred or pinged the wrong server.

at the least it would be fair towards people who have not yet bought the game and have no idea what they will be getting into

Posting an update in this thread wouldn’t change that. As for profits, it costs ArenaNet when they have to issue a refund, but scaring away potential customers is even worse.

Your ping shows the route to NA because there is a authentication server there which is being used every time you load a new map (iirc). If you check your resource monitor (ctrl+shift+esc, then performance, then resource monitor) you can see 3 connections to gw2 in network tab. The two with 206.×.×.x are chat server and normal game server. The one with 64.×.×.x is the authentication server.

So the serious lag issues that started on the 24th of January and are still ongoing for my whole guild are still not resolved.
I don’t think it is a coincidence that it started with the sales event and many new / returning players because of the HOT announcement.
Ofc, I’m no specialist, but I’d like to remind any Anet-Representative that we had very similar issues in the end of 2012 (October?) and 2013 (December?), IIRC. As far as I remember, the issues have been identified as a serious bandwidth issue on level 3 routing to the authentification server back in the day, and did not resolve until Anet was working together with level 3 to resolve it.
At the moment, frustration is occuring regularly because of heavy rubberbanding and up to multiple minute lags during primetime, rendering some guild members or me to be unable to play at all.

Event the european WTS qualifying finals between TCG and oRNG were plagued with lag, see for yourself. Of course, the shout casters labeled the lags as “animation issues”, but for me it is quite obviously lag, including heavy rubber banding of Helseth leading TCG to forfeit one game, and 2 disconnects.

I really think Anet needs to fix these issues if they want a halfway reasonable HOT start…

Sigh, this lag is killing me. I don’t know much about networking but I think it really isn’t a problem from my end. Followed anet’s instruction for the tracing data:

Serious Server Latency. I’m from England near Cambridge and have been suffering from skill lag, text lag, interaction lag, just every type of lag possible. Sometime’s I’ll be running and then I’ll be taking random damage because I’m actually stood still and the latency or something is messing up completely. I’ve only experienced this for the past 2 days and before never at all. My internet connection is fine, I can download and play any other online game etc. Here are my results although they appear to show that I have no latency at all to the various IP’s/Server so is it the Servers in the UK that aren’t sending the necessary data back to my PC? It is persistent as well. Also comes up with 42:0:9001:3858:101 error code a few times whilst in game. I have run EVERY protocol I can find, suggested by the GW2 team and none of them have worked. Therefore it must be a problem your end. Can you please fix/address this problem A.S.A.P

The frequent 300-500ms spikes started again for me yesterday, and are still preventing me from being able to PvP today. The silence from ANet on this is appalling. I’ve tried everything I can on my end. Contacted my ISP and got an upload and download speed boost even though it wasn’t needed (turns out it was free and just hadn’t reached my area yet), applied the TCPNoDelay and TCPAckFrequency tweaks to reduce latency at the cost of a little bandwidth, messed around with some other TCP settings using TCP Optimizer, and finally tried VPNs including WTFast, PingZapper and Battleping. I got a slightly (but noticeable) increase in response time for my skills when I wasn’t spiking, which was nice, but it didn’t get rid of the spikes. Sometimes using a VPN avoided or significantly reduced the spikes I was getting, but other times such as now, it doesn’t do anything.

I’ve been toying with the idea of paying to use a bigger and supposedly better VPN such as HideMyAss or IPVanish, but that would just be a waste of money if the problem is ANet’s servers. So I need to know if their servers are the problem to proceed with trying to resolve this myself, but I can’t even get so much as a yes or no on that from ANet. Even when I asked the question via a ticket, instead of answering yes or no, they want me to download a program, run a scan, and send them a load of information about my computer, things I have installed, etc. etc. Why is it so hard to get so much as a little one word response? How many more pages must this thread accumulate to warrant a response? Where is the Justin of the technical support section?

Edit: I know some other online games have a status page where players can see if there are any issues with the game’s servers, such as online, offline, slow responses etc. Could we have one of those? It could even be done instead of arguably unnecessary forum reorganisations.

Brief description of what you’re seeing: severe packet loss (people blinking around, skills not activating, chat delay, etc), skill lag and random disconnections.

The game is completely unplayable. Again.
Guess ArenaNet and NCsoft have bigger problems than caring about their customers.

9/10 login attempts fail for the last 2 weeks… sometimes I can’t login for hours (and it’s certainly not in prime time only)

Tried to disable the firewall, turn off the virus scanner – didn’t work.

I just wanted to let you guys know we haven’t forgotten about this issue.

We have several teams working on improving the things we have control over, and we’re collecting data to figure out which external network factors are contributing to the problem. While we can’t directly fix the latter, we hope that with your help we can gather enough information to work with ISPs to reduce the packet loss that’s happening between your computers and our servers. We’ve already started working with some of them, and appreciate whatever patience you can muster while we try to get the game playable again for you.

I’m waiting to hear back from a couple colleagues regarding our next steps. When I do, I’ll update this thread with more information on the status of the problems and anything else you guys can do to help us get this solved. Thanks again.

I used to have “all the above” problems during primetime for months. Then I googled my cable modem, Netgear CG3700, and found out that its internal router is unreliable and could cause problems in specifically online games. People recommended to disable the router, run the modem as a bridge only and buy an extended router if there is a need for one.

Since that day I turned off the router mode, I have had no lag outside the “normal” WvW zerg friday reset that everyone gets. I’m no network engineer and don’t know why only GW2 was affected by this, but it would explain why VPNs can reduce the lag for those with otherwise stable connections.

Great to see a mod response! Thank you! It gives me a little hope that this is being worked on and significant headway might be made at some point.

Did you have those problems constantly, or would you have periods of say… 4 weeks frequent lag spikes, 5 weeks perfectly fine, 4 days lag spikes, 6 days fine etc? Seemingly random but long periods with either consistent latency or latency spikes.
