The last time I actually played the game was somewhere in December. I’ve tried to start the game up again the last few days, but it won’t start at all. I don’t get the launcher window, nothing happens at all. The Guild Wars 2 icon pops up for a brief flash of a second in the dock but disappears immediately.
I’ve tried downloading the client again and reinstalling it, but the exact same thing happens too – after the fresh install, the GW2 icon pops up for a second and then closes and disappears immediately.

Anyone have a clue where to look or what to do about this? Same thing still happening, even after restarting, deleting, launching from “applications”, launching from another hard drive the game client was stored on – they all have the exact same result: the icon pops up in the dock for less than a second and disappears immediately.

Who thought it would be smart to unify Mac and Windows support into one forum, as if they don’t both have VASTLY different problems? Very strange, imo.

Hello again. Gone through all the possible steps the support team could think of to fix this problem and still can’t get the game to open. They were very helpful and provided a lot of suggestions that seemed logical, but unfortunately, none of them worked.

I have no idea why I stopped being able to play as I was able to on this exact computer, which the exact operating system up until at least a month before I noticed the problem.

Has anyone else had this problem and been lucky enough to find a fix, or did any of the steps support send you through actually work? Thanks.

This just happened to me – started playing after a small hiatus and downloaded a new version of the client only to be confronted with an non-responsive dock icon.

BUT in the 5-10 minutes it’s taken me to search for answers, and find this thread the launcher window just popped up. In short, have you tried waiting a (surprisingly long) time, as it may just be taking a while to start?

You won’t get any help here from Anet for Mac support based on what I have seen. Even when there was a Mac support forum there was little to no support even after Mac customers were assured there was a Mac support specialist. Said specialist has not responded to a Mac issue in 6 months. Your best bet is to submit a support ticket and make sure you mention you are a Mac customer.

^this. Start the client, go make a cup of coffee, read the paper and watch the birds for a while, then go back to your computer and see if it’s not up and running. Sometimes this happens to me as well, from time to time. Not sure what’s causing it though, but like others have stated in this thread, Mac users aren’t really cared for by Anet it seems.

A full 10 months later and the exact same problem still persists. Click the app, the icon pops up in the dock for a flash of a second and disappears afterwards. Activity Monitor does not show GW2 running. Happens even on a fresh install after a supposedly clean uninstall.

This is seemingly not a known issue as every time I start to go through support I am given the same non-specific troubleshooting instructions as before.

I have the same problem. Sometimes it works after a few “force quits” sometimes it doesn’t. Here are a few fixes i tried and it worked:
1. Run this command, it deletes the launcher settings
“rm -rf /Users/<USERNAME_HERE>/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2”
2. Run this command, it starts the repair process for GW2 (i took me about 10~15 min and the launcher appeared)
“/Applications/Guild\ Wars\ 2.app/Contents/MacOS/cider —use-dos-cwd C:Gw2 -- C:\\GW2\\GW2.exe -repair”

And the only thing remaining is to wait for ANet to make us a working client, and remove the 3 year old “Beta” tag from Mac

fwiw, I’ve had a broken GW2 for quite some time. It would show up in the dock but no GW2 window would ever appear.

Checking activity monitor shows it just hanging, not doing much.

This is how I fixed my issue:

1. Use Finder to browse to ~/Library/Application Support/ (can use CTRL-SHIFT-G shortcut)
2. Rename “Guild Wars 2” to “Guild Wars 2-backup”
3. Launch Guild Wars 2 and it works

I don’t know if this causes other side affects, but at least now it boots and is downloading heart of thrones. If you have to, you can always restore the backed up “Guild Wars 2” folder.

The latest response:

“At the moment we notice that there is a problem with your client executable files, since this is a Mac computer and there is no .dmg file that installs the game as an executable for mac there could be damage files that cannot be restored.

Please let us know if this worked out for you."

Which at least, finally, seems to show that support knows where the problem is, rather than sending me through generic troubleshooting. I appreciate that a lot.

Unfortunately the e-mail didn’t suggest a course of action or a way to prove that this is in fact the problem. “Please let us know if ‘this’ worked out for you” is a very absurd sentence to put there.

I think from now on, I’m going to bump this thread weekly until I get a meaningful answer.

A lot of nice responses from fellow suffering Mac users, but unfortunately nothing that solves the specific problem. Keep in mind, this is not a process that is still running in the background or a dock icon without a launcher window; this is the app crashing immediately before anything is even able to happen.

There are no corrupt files, as the launcher can’t download anything yet. There is no GW2.dat file as the launcher cannot download anything. Removing the application support folders changes nothing because even on a completely fresh install, the app closes immediately.

This happens to no other application on my machine.

Most of the time it works for me when I start the game via Terminal.
The command I use is : sudo /Applications/Guild\ Wars\ 2.app/Contents/MacOS/cider

When I start it without ‘sudo’ , it does not work for me.

Do you have multiple monitors? Try unplugging all but one and then try starting the game again.

I removed the file “GFXSettings.Gw2.exe.xml” in ~/Library/Application Support/Guild Wars 2/p_drive/ and that fixed me up. Not sure if it is exactly the same issue but mine would not load either and this got it to come back up.

Do this:
You can try to delete the contents of the gw2 data folder, it’s a pain to get to the right one: this step is a general fix for many tp and graphics issues, even without the previous steps however, it will lose all saved log in/password and in-game settings.

To access this:
1 Click on the “Finder” icon located in your dock or the desktop of your computer to make “Finder” the active program in the finder menu bar.
2 Hold down the “Option” key on your keyboard while clicking “Go” in the finder menu bar. A drop-down will appear.
3 While still holding down the “Option” key, click on “Library” in the “Go” drop-down.
4 Once in the Library folder click on Application Support > Guild Wars 2
5 Move the entire Guild Wars 2 folder to the trash and then empty the trash.

The next time you launch Guild Wars 2 it will recreate the recently deleted folder.

No, I’m aware. I deleted all of these folders when I did a clean uninstall – that’s what makes it a clean uninstall in the first place. After reinstalling (with, as far as I know, no files at all related to the game still on my computer), there are no relevant files in the Application Support folder.
By that I mean, the separate .dat files that I was told to delete did not exist yet, because the game had not properly launched even once.

Meanwhile, I still have not been able to play this game for well over a year and I still have not found any answers for this exact error.

To reiterate, in the Arenanet.log file, it shows nothing except for this message:

“App: gw2.exe
Fatal error (2): Exception
When: 3/24/2016 17:30:15
File: ..\..\..\Core\Platform\Windows\Exe\Error\ExeError.cpp(409)”

The message is displayed multiple times, identical except for the “when” field which states the moments where I attempted to launch the application. I assume there is a problem going on with the .exe file inside of the cider wrapper, because I have found threads of windows users that have had similar errors – but I have not been able to find an answer.

It seems like this should be fairly easy to figure out. I have WANTED to be a customer for a game that I enjoy very much for over a year and still have not received any real solution from ArenaNet.

Ok. I’ve got an idea. If it’s an issue with the .exe inside the game then replacing it with the windows .exe might actually work (they’re the same file).
So… Download the windows version of GW2 (yes I know you can’t run it, that doesn’t matter we just want the exe file). Make sure it is named Gw2.exe if it isn’t then go ahead and rename it. Right click the file and copy it.
Now open your applications folder, right click GW2 and click “Show Package Contents” (sorry, don’t know how much you do or don’t know so will just step by step it). Then go Contents>>Resources>>transgaming>>c_drive>>GW2>> and paste the Gw2.exe in there, overwriting the existing one.

Let me know if that does anything.

Alternatively – you could create another user account on your mac and try installing the game on that (yes I know that’s an annoying thing to do, but its easy to get rid of afterwards if it doesnt work). Just thinking that it might let you actually begin the installation and then you could just copy the files across.

Trying to launch or install Guild Wars 2 from a different user account is a suggestion that I’ve received from various support e-mails, but unfortunately it does not change the situation at all.

When I replace the Gw2.exe file inside the package contents with a Windows version of the same file and then try to launch the application again, it shows me an actual error message (“unhandled page fault on read access” etc.) and it adds a very similar error entry to before in the ArenaNet.log file, although the numbers are slightly different.

It still does not launch properly, though.

Have you tried using PlayOnMac or Wineskin to run the game? Quite honestly you’re likely to get better performance than the Cider wrapped version at present.

In all honesty your best option is just to run Windows but if you absolutely can’t do that for whatever reason your second best bet is just to run the game using Wine.

I recommend Wine 1.9.5-staging as it has the CSMT patches which will allow you to get fairly good performance. Not as good as Windows by a long shot but certainly playable.

Can I ask what the specs of your mac are and what OS you’re running?

I’m sorry that there’s not more I can suggest to fix the problem. It’s a little worrying that support weren’t able to come up with anything for you.

While not ideal you could always begin the installation using something like PlayOnMac and then copy the .dat over and see if that allows the game to run?

Same issue here. Just tried to install the game on my Mac last night and after the install the launch window refuses to open. When I right click on the icon and select “Show all windows” it only shows a blank blue transparent box. I’ve tried clean uninstalls, terminal repairs, etc. and nothing seems to do the trick.

Ok so I’ve been having a look and i think its something to do with the launcher working but it just isn’t being displayed as that is why one user found it worked by deleting a GFX file. also when you press tab a few times when it is in front and press enter i at least get a safari window that opens to guild wars forgot password page. this would suggest that the forgot password button on the login client is being pressed.

Mine either, though not quite sure if it’s Mac related or just ‘connection related’ since there are probably quite a lot of people wanting to download the new patch at the same time.

Going through the normal channels, such as deleting cache files certainly doesn’t help.

Also I’ve noticed that in Activity Monitor, there’s only one instance of GW2 running, instead of the normal two (sometimes three!) that have ran in the past.

rename gw2.tmp to gw2.exe and delete old gw2.exe before it.

the file path is – /Applications/Guild Wars 2.app/Contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive
