I have a:

5K iMac late 2017
4 Ghz Core i7
32GB Ram
Radeon R9 295x 4096MB

is there anyone with this setup that uses the Mac client? Success? I tried the client long long ago and it was really really bad. Has it improved!?

It works pretty okay in the windows client. (I obviously don’t expect to play 5k or super high resolutions.) I can play with pretty much everything on high and maintain 45-100+ fps depending on what is going on at 1440p. If I play 1080p then it is around 55-100+ fps. If I lower settings a tad and put vertical sync on it is a solid 60fps.

Since I have success with using boot camped windows 10 you may want to know why i want to use the Mac client.

The reason is simple, I don’t use windows for anything. I just use it to play games and even then I don’t play often because I don’t like using windows or having to switch back to my Mac when I need to do some work. I like Mac because for me it works much better as a productivity machine and I could never go back to Windows learning to implement unix shells or trying to patch up the system for work related things.

How long ago did you last try the Mac client? If it was more than a couple of months ago, you may be interested to know that the old 32-bit “wrapper” client has now been replaced with a new native 64-bit client.

The new client is still pretty rough (it was only made available for testing at the end of June), but it’s receiving regular improvements and bug fixes and has come a long way since the initial release. While performance won’t compare with Bootcamp for a number of reasons, the changes they’ve made to it recently have improved performance for me. It really seems to depend on your config regarding how it’ll go… people without SSDs seem to experience slow load times compared with even the 32-bit client for example, but on my 2016 MacBook Pro with Radeon Pro 460 it’s overall a much better experience than the old client.

In any case, the main thing about the new client is that they can now actively work on improving it… the old 32-bit client had been dead in the water for a long time.

Thanks for the reply sunrun. It sounds like it is worth a try. I used the old 32 bit client and did the VRAM modification via configuration. Do you know if that is still needed and if done the same way? If you are not familiar to what I am referring to, from what I understand the old 32-bit client used to cap your video cards ram and under utilize it and you could get around this by editing a config file.

As far as I’m aware the config file settings related to graphics are ignored by the 64-bit client because they were part of the “wrapper” system the previous client used (the new client uses native OpenGL). Currently the new client has fewer opportunities to tweak settings (and fewer resolution options), but as I say, it’s all early days still.

There’s a long thread related to the new client here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Feedback-Guild-Wars-2-Mac-64-Bit-Client/page/1
