Q:

So I’ve tried every trick I know: turned off all other startup items etc, reinstalled mac OS Sierra, reinstalled GW2 twice. Still locking up at startup, or 1 minute into game. Doesn’t matter where I was before crash (PvP, WvW, Lion’s Arch etc). It seems I’ll have to go buy Windows 7 and run Bootcamp if I want to continue playing. I understand that Mac users are a distinct and tiny minority, but honestly why bother offering a mac client if you never upgrade it or address crash issues?

It doesn’t help you, but ANet are working actively on a newer, native, macOS client for GW2. It apparently runs the game minimally already, but is not at release quality, so expect an improvement in the next half or so…

I use Sierra on my MacBook Pro 2015 too but does not even show the launcher anymore even after trying reinstalling multiple times lol

I love GW2 better than any other MMOs but this issue really is a shame. Also it is kind of unfair for those people who use Mac because they bought it at the same price as Windows users without even knowing that there are many technical issues on Mac client (because Anet did not warn us about specific issues at all before we purchased it) so they can only enjoy half of what Windows users can.

I really hope they make the game PLAYABLE before they even release any other contents that we can’t even play anymore or just completely eliminate Mac client for GW2 and get us our money back lol

FWIW, others report that wine 2.0 can run GW2 64-bit client fairly well; check the forums and/or reddit for reports. You may find that a useful stopgap.

Hey thanks for all your replies.
FWIW I looked into wine 2.0 for another RPG but it ran very sluggishly.
Honestly it looks like Bootcamp is my only option. At this point I can’t even get a freshly downloaded GW2 to install without crashing. And this is after multiple runs through Onyx and other utilities. Seems to start a ‘kernel panic’ every time.

I’ve been having all sorts of issues with the Mac client for the past month or so. A lot of lag that seems to be server lag (since my connection generally seems fine with everything else), along with inability to contact the login server, coherent host crashes, etc.

About a week ago the game stopped opening altogether (it would “open” but never actually come up on my screen, no matter how many times I tried, or how long I waited). I found that step four here https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/MAC-Basic-Beta-Client-Troubleshooting helped to solve that issue (I renamed the file, rather than deleting it, but a new one was created on launch all the same), and the game played fine after that for probably two or three days before the process seems to have restarted again (lag → “unable to contact the login server” → coherent host crash → game reluctant/unwilling to open/log in).

No idea why this helped, especially since it seems to have only worked temporarily, but it might be worth a try if you’ve not attempted it yet, because it did get my client to open again, at least.

The fact you are using third party quote-maintenance-unquote utilities suggests there is a chance that your OS crash issues are related to some damage one of them has done.

I’d suggest reinstalling macOS in place using recovery mode, and avoiding tools such as Onyx in future. This may or may not resolve the problem, but it’s a solid shot.

I play on GNU/Linux; similar to Mac. My game doesn’t crash at all, But my friend who plays on Mac has major issues with the client. His game crashes all of the time on mac client. I’m gonna try and convince him to post here. I recommend what others have stated… use Wine.

Heyo!

I run the Mac client with no problems, had a fresh reinstall yesterday, everything works fine. I’m on OS X Sierra 10.12.3.

It seems to me something’s going on, on your end, not so much the client itself as evidently I can get it to run no problems on Sierra as well. I’d hold off on trying to get Windows 7 and Bootcamp before trying to fix this problem natively first.

I can tell you from first hand experience, the FPS barely, if even, changes from a constant 15-30 FPS in Bootcamp as it is in OS X client. So you might wind up disappointed in your new purchase of the expensive Windows 7.

Some more information as to when the problem began and if you can remember any programs you installed since then would be helpful.

Yeah, I have had two crashes myself today. Both were during attempts to move from one place to another.

I’ve had a lot of crashes in the past, too, and I’ve tried everything including a new reinstall of the game. I haven’t reinstalled the OS, but that’s because nothing else is causing problems, and if I do, I can’t access my printer (long story.) I’m going to repair the game again, but this needs to be looked into, even with the native client coming out. This is untenable.

Update: I can’t even repair the client because it froze in the middle of it. BRILLIANT.

I’ve been having this issue where my Mac goes completely black and restarts. Ran a diagnostic and it’s not a hardware issue. Any suggestions? Seems to happen at least once a day while playing GW2

again thanks all for your input. Just checked this today. I installed bootcamp and downloaded GW2. It worked for a few days but now I have ‘error 0xc000009a’ when I try to boot up as PC (windows 10). Can’t repair it as the bootcamp USB won’t initiate etc. I’ve tried a crash course in PC repair tools etc but I’m a mac user (since 1985) and don’t know the intricacies of PC maintenance.

Also I think several of you are correct that 64-bit windows and mac simply don’t mesh. Again its a pity that the mac client is simply not viable any longer.

A “kernel panic” says one of two things have happened: one, you have some sort of bad driver, or two, you have a hardware problem.

Try a macOS reinstall, and failing that, consider using the warranty support if you can, since it’s only going to get worse from here.

Sounds heat related to me; does a warmer computer correlate to quick or slow failures?

Until the native macOS client — which is being actively developed but is not yet even beta quality — is released, wine 2.0 with the 64-bit GW2 client is definitely the best option on the mac.

The biggest cause of crashes was that the ANet one is the 32-bit client, and that has serious issues with memory, which wine has no influence on either positive or negative. Since the 64-bit client works, that’s definitely going to be at least a /bit/ less crash-prone.

Is this a new development with Wine 2.0? I was under the impression that Wine was unable to run the 64-bit client due to the nature of how Macs work—it couldn’t access the correct architecture, or something like that. That said, I only did any research into it when the 64 bit client was first released.

I’m on Sierra as well, and have swapped to using Bootcamp pretty exclusively because it runs the game better and because GW2 had taken to rebooting my whole machine at random. Fingers crossed that the Mac-native client will rectify things.

Yeah, apparently it works in wine 2.0; I have literally no idea how they managed that, and have not looked at the detail.

I have heard a rumor that it’s because some-but-not-all win64 apps use the particular register, so the ones that don’t will work fine, but I don’t even know. I’ve just gone with real windows for running gw2 as well, TBH.

Hi all,
I used to play with the mac beta client and recently with the new 64-bit client for mac using Mavericks, and everything worked fine…

Yesterday I installed Sierra (10.12.6) and both the clients will sistematically crash the mac, forcing it to restart…

Now my question is: to play GW2 should I downgrade to the previous OS? Does the client still have problems with Sierra even if the requirements says OS 10.9 and later versions?

I would not downgrade the OS just to play GW, or worse, switch to bootcamp everytime I want to play… :(
