Q:

I have a dual-monitor setup, though I only use the primary monitor for gaming. I play at the monitor’s native resolution, 1920×1200, full screen. I like to navigate with the mouse and I use both mouse buttons to run while turning the mouse to rotate/steer my character. I’ve noticed on occasion that while doing this my mouse pointer will suddenly lose its focus in the game and shoot across my screen onto the other desktop (because I’ve been moving in that direction). The best way I can describe it is that GW2 has lost possession of the mouse pointer, almost like the app has been minimized or backgrounded, and Windows has taken over the mouse pointer again. When I bring the pointer back over to the primary monitor and click anywhere in the game window, the mouse comes back into focus in GW2 and works normally.

as a short term fix if your not using said extra monitor then maybe just turn it off for when your playing gw2.. not ideal but only thing i can think of apart from this..

maybe try changing the set up of the screens so they think they are on top of each other..
so to move to the other monitor you have to move your mouse to the top to switch screens..
might get abit of getting used too but might be a temporary fix till you find better

firebreathz, just to clarify, i’m not saying that the second monitor is what is causing the problem. I was just listing my set-up in case it is relevant.

Is there a confirmed bug related to multi-monitor setups and mouse pointers?

This doesn’t happen enough for me to easily confirm whether or not disabling my other monitor has en effect. It’s a random occurrence and I’ve only had it happen a few times so far. I just know that it shouldn’t happen if GW2 has mouse focus.

I don’t think it has anything to do with the 2nd monitor. See this thread.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Losing-track-of-cursor-terrible-tab-targeting/first

This issue has been around since release I believe…

Admittedly I didn’t read each and every post in that thread, but the thread seems to be about the player losing track of the cursor or the cursor disappearing from the screen. I have noticed that too, but my issue is that the mouse becomes temporarily detached from the game. It’s like GW2 gives up its mouse focus and lets the mouse run free on my Windows desktop until I click on the game window again. Does that make sense?

could it be something thats running in the background that is causing this maybe?
a pop up, messenger,or even something obscure like maybe auto update?

because thinking in general there isnt really a way for the game it self to lose focus of the cursor

however there are loads of things that will take focus from gw2 that are running in the background

next time it happens try see if anything on the desktop changed..

turn it to clone whilst in game rather than extended desktop you are breaching the primary screen by moving you mouse right as sonn as it hits the edge of your screen it is now in the secondary monitors realm hence loosing control.

Not that I’m aware of. The desktop is pretty clean and while I’m playing GW2 I try not to have any other apps open. The only backgrounded apps I have running are Avast! (virus scanner) and a monitor calibration tool called Spyder3. It doesn’t happen when running other games.

I’ll keep an eye out.

a possibility would be the virus scanner.. when it’s set to scan it might call focus or in general might call focus if it thinks its found something..

personally my moneys on the virus scanner

secondary programs run in the backgroud aka anti virus windows update and would not affect a single display in this case its extended desktop

Makes sense. I run GW2 in windowed mode on a single screen so I can also view a browser with the wiki, timers, maps, etc. Very often the cursor disappears from the screen almost as if it is bouncing to the desktop rather than the window. I thought maybe it was a related issue and there is just a problem with the cursor period in the game.

To stop this happening you need to set an option… Press F11, click on Graphic Options…

The top selection is probably set to “Windowed Fullscreen”. When in this mode the mouse will ‘wander’ off of the GW2 window and onto the other monitor.

To prevent this set, this option to Fullscreen. Then to swap to the other monitor, you need to alt-tab out of GW2.

I see the same issue, and I do have my options set to Fullscreen (non-windowed).

I have a primary monitor (1920 × 1080) with a secondary monitor (1280×1024) to the left of the primary. GW2 is set to run with the native resolution on the primary monitor in fullscreen mode.

If I move the cursor along the left edge of the screen (ie, along the boundary between the 2 monitor) and click on the right mouse button, I can get the cursor to leave the GW2 monitor and appear on the secondary monitor. If I then click a mouse button, GW2 minimizes. Moving the mouse to the left and up seems to make it happen more.

This usually happens when I’m flailing about in combat, and that’s the worst time for the window to minimize. As a result, it’s pretty frustrating when it happens.

I filed an in-game report, so we’ll see if anything comes of it.

This can be caused by the second monitor. I was having the same issue a few times and I was keeping track of when the issue occurred. My primary monitor is my left monitor and my secondary monitor is to the right. I noticed that at times when my cursor would move to fast and to far to the right then there was a change the game would lose focus and would no longer capture the mouse. So far the only solution I could come up with was to go into the display settings (nvidia settings in my case) and disable the secondary monitor while playing GW2.

Also you may want to make sure you are not playing in boarderless windowed mode. As this will at times give the same result.

Cheers,

Interestingly enough, I can not get this to happen when the map screen is up. The same actions that cause the window to minimize in the main view do not cause the window to minimize in the map view. One difference between these 2 screens is that the cursor is never hidden in the map view. I don’t know if that is a clue to what is causing this or not.

This is one of my most hated bugs in the game right now.

I hope ANet is aware of this and working on a fix.

It’s easy to replicate, this bug kitten es me off to no end, just move your mouse all the way to the edge of the screen thats adjacent to your second monitor i have my rmb set to camera rotate. Hold your rmb then spin your camera in the direction that would drag your pointer onto the 2nd monitor release button and your pointer will pop onto your 2nd monitor. Because you are still focused on the fast paced action in the fight you right click again to move your camera view and bam GW2 minimises and the right click menu on the 2nd monitor pops up. Which given the crazy dps some builds can pump out(8-9k crits) means death with the minimise/maximise delay.

Happens all the time, makes me want to strangle kittens.

Confirming this is still going on. Just as the others mentioned. You can run your cursor along the edge of the screen between the two monitors and double-click to have it release from game and shoot over to your other monitor (having the mouse dragging that direction while you’re clicking). Very annoying bug and leads to death by enemy or running off something. Surprised it has been around for so long and still there – Blizzard wouldn’t leave things like this around for so long…

Wow, 4 years years later and this is still a problem. I’m able to reproduce this 100% of the time. I am in Fullscreen mode. Placing my cursor on the edge of my in-game screen (adjacent to my second monitor), left clicking to look around (in a way that would move my cursor towards the direction of my second monitor), and releasing my left click causes the cursor to appear on my second monitor. Left clicking or right clicking while the cursor is active on my second monitor will minimize the game. As others have said, this is very frustrating. Fullscreen should confine the cursor to the game!

Running a Windows 10 system.

I confirm that this is still an issue. I can reproduce it as well, and to prevent it happen I made an autohotkey script that prevents the mouse from leaving the game screen:

https://www.wombaz.de/uploads/2016/07/gw2-helper.ahk

Works with windowed mode as well, by the way.
Doesn’t modify or inject anything into the game process, so it’s safe to use as far as the TOS about 3rd party tools go.
