So I’m trying to download the new patch and stuck on the last file at 0 Kb/sec. Why is this happening?
Verizon FIOS? If so, you’re lucky, mine stalls every few seconds.
No, I don’t have verizon fios
It is doing the same thing for me too. I just updated to Windows 8.1, could that be relevant?
I am a Verizon user. I was having major issues. Somone posted this. I took a chance. I used this person’s suggestion. Fixed my issue instantly.

I’m also on Verizon in the NYC area and am experiencing this issue.
Instead of setting up a VPN, try this workaround:
Edit C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts using notepad (run as administrator)
Add this line at the bottom:
174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com
I have Verizon Fios, I am having the same issues, I close it, restart, it downloads some more, then stops, I have repeated this several times, I am done to 3188 files remaining. I am even running it as Admin and its still happening. Doing that fixed it before, but not now.
Oh cool thanks. I also have Fios.

Ronsalon….you’re a genius….I wasn’t too keen on setting up vpn, either. Have been trying unsuccessfully to download this patch for over an hour. I tried this fix, and the download was almost instantaneous. Am happily downloading the new patch now. Thanks dude!

I tried editing the file in notepad and saving and Windows is telling me I need to log on as Administrator as Kilam.4913 mentioned. I checked and my user account is already logged in as the Administrator account. WTH
Running 8.1 Windows
1) Right click “Notepad” and select “Run as administrator”
2) Click File -> Open 3) Browse to “C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc”
4) Change the file filter drop down box from “Text Documents (.txt)” to “All Files (.*)”
5) Select “hosts” and click “Open”
6) Make the needed changes and close Notepad. Save when prompted.

okay i fixed it. i need to change host read only check box off.
OMG you are a genius! I did a stupid mistake though – before seeing these comments, I went and uninstalled the game, thinking a file was corrupted….now I have to reinstall the game and even though the solution works, it will take me at least 2 hours. :/
Thank you very much for the fix!!!!!!

THANK YOU. I was afraid I would never get the patch installed. Worked like a charm.
Hello,
I tried this method however it tells me when saving that it is a “read only” file? Anyone able to tell me what im doing wrong? I followed everything mentioned here.
okay i fixed it. i need to change host read only check box off.
Thank you! That was what i was missing!
Either the notepad fix does not work or I am doing it wrong. Yes I am able to edit the file but no dice on adding the line.
Okay, I was able to use the fix, it worked for me. But no one has said so far not to include the ‘#’ when making your next line.
When you type: 174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com into notepad, do not put a ‘#’ at the start of the line.
Just another tip on the hosts file. If you are having trouble saving edits and are logged on as administrator, some antivirus/internet security software protects this file so you may want to temporarily disable it or check in the options to see if you can tell it to let you edit the file.

I am stuck on the download with 1 file remaining. I have closed the connection and restarted the download several times. It starts downloading then the download rate starts immediately slowing down to 0 KB/PS. Any help.
Its done the same thing again after each patch. The last 2 I did what ronsalon suggested, and it fixed it. Sooo, its looking like that has to happen after every patch?
Hard to distinguish if its a patch problem or a Verizon one. 3rd time in 2 days.
Just constant code updates lol

I had the same problem, but after I did this, everything works perfectly! Try it.

hope this help!
Voodoochild, you saved me! Animercenary, a good point, I elected not to put in the # and it worked but that should be added to the step-by-step info.
Seriously though, how can I do this on a Mac??
Figured it out for Mac users:
You need to open your host settings, similar to the Windows host file edit.
1) Open Terminal, run “sudo nano /private/etc/hosts”
2) Enter password
3) Arrow key down to the bottom of the host lists and add “174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com”
4) Hit Control+O, then Return, then Control+X to save.
You’re done! Worked like a charm for a Mac user using Verizon FiOS.
Here’s reference material for how to do it.

However, it seems my graphics don’t load. So… not too sure WTF is up with that. I get a GW2 cursor, but it won’t show me anything but a black screen. So if anybody has a fix for that I would love to hear it. Hey, the update worked though!….

I downloaded the patch successfully today with no problems. Im running windows 8.1 and i have Fios. I played the game for a bit and it was working fine. But then when i went to shut down my laptop, there was an update for my computer. I shutdown and updated my pc, but now the game client wont load. It starts off strong but then it hits 0kb/sec. Could my update be effecting this? Do you think your patch would work for me too? I am also currently new to GW2.
Not only did this fix the issue but my patch downloads MUCH faster now… Also on FiOS out in Long Island.
i <3 U whoever came up with this solution.
