Permanent Gather tool questions
Unlikely.
Both to them upgrading any other tools, and to finding an answer from the Devs here.
Good luck.
When they put out the mining tool that mined up sprockets, they didn’t change any of the other tools. Most likely it’s in the same boat.
Yes, it won’t be changed. That is the whole point of the new gathering tools: to give people, old and new players alike, a reason to buy them by making them different from other gathering tools.
I, for once, won’t spend money on them, I get enough unbound magic as it is. Also, at this point, we don’t know yet whether there will be unbound magic in the maps of the upcoming expansion as well. For if there won’t be, it would truly be a waste of money.
Also, keep in mind that this “extra feature” these tools sport only works on the current Season 3 maps, while the watchwork sprocket one works on every metal node.

I’m pretty sure one receives Unbound Magic from any node, not just those in (I believe you meant) Season 3 maps.
Yes, I meant Season 3 (corrected that).
As for their gathering ability: “It contains logging, mining and harvesting tools that can gather from any of their respective nodes.” (Source)
To me it sounds like you can only gather additional Unbound Magic with them from those Season 3 currency nodes, no?
Edit: You were right. They gather it from all nodes in the game. ArenaNet needs to adjust the text to make this clear.

Respective nodes means: Sickle can gather plants, Axe can chop wood, Pick can mine Ore. It’s pretty clear.
But, who knows, maybe they will change it. /shrug

I’d say it is technically correct, but ambiguous: both readings are absolutely correct in english. I read it the same way you did, but that’s probably because I have specific knowledge of what “relevant nodes” mean, and the implementations of the tools.
Not that I expect change, just … I don’t think the complaint is wrong, that’s all. Validation and whatnot.
Thanks, SlippyCheeze, what you said.
Anyway, I just noticed that gathering with these Unbound Magic tools takes longer. The respective resources won’t be in your inventory until the gathering bar has been completed, while with the traditional tools you can cancel the action as soon as the node’s name is no longer visible (you can verify this by looking at your inventory while gathering, and will see I am right).
On the bright side of things, they seem to gather more in one go, which means rich nodes require less cycles to harvest (including the ones in guild halls).

Yeah, all in all I like the trade-off with less aftercast and more efficiency in what is actually collected.
