You would use the in-game mail report function (exclamation mark) to do so.

Good luck.

Hey guys/girls,

The email looks like: http://i.imgur.com/mXGp4Gk.png

You know it’s a scam when they ask for you account information that they obviously have and thus sent you the email.

lol, the curious thing is the most of these scammers appeal to use the expression “Please keep in mind that Guild Wars 2 is a global game with hundreds of thousands of players. This means that standards of behavior must be upheld.” What difference would it make? It’s another proof that’s not real as I’m sure Anet wouldn’t use such appellative expressions to put players in despair. Be aware people!

Today when I logged in I received a mail from a “GM Majorcath” saying that “..your login account Synik.8503 will be shut down or partially limited within 72 hours due to currency transactions or abnormal login”. The mail then told me I could remove restrictions by clicking this link:

I removed the link but can give it to an Anet employee if they want to investigate.

I have NOT clicked this link in case it is dangerous to my account or computer. I am not sure if this link was sent by Anet or a scam. The warning at the bottom of player-sent mails that says: Note: “This message was sent by another player. It was not sent by the Guild Wars 2 Team.” still appears on the mail.

The mail also reminded me that gw2 is a “global game” and “standards of behavior must be upheld”. This might identify if this mail is Anet or scam.

I appreciate other players input, but I would like confirmation from an Anet employee that this is a scam and that I will not lose my account, please.

Thanks and I await response,
Synik

It outright says that it is not from ArenaNet (you even quoted it in your post).

It is not from ArenaNet. Do not click the link and remove the link from the post before someone else clicks on it.

Why did you bother to create a link? WHY? Actions like this just reinforces the belief that some of these “Is this a scam” threads are not from innocent, naive players double checking but from the scammers themselves hoping some foolish soul will click on it.

I know, the OP is probably simply overly trusting but what more can be done to convince players than have the alert that this mail isn’t from “the Guild Wars 2 Team”?

If you want an ArenaNet employee response, check the Stickies in some of the sub-forums, including this one.

Good luck.

I read deeper into the forums and have discovered the mail I received is a scam. It has gone out to other players in an attempt to take their account information. There is a post on the forums by an Anet Employee that quotes word for word the mail I received and labels it as mail not from Anet.

I am very sorry for posting the scam link, I took it off my original post. The reason I posted it in the first place was in case an Anet employee saw this thread and wanted to investigate the link. I should have investigated this on the forums further and I would have had my question answered already. I sincerely apologize.

If anyone saw the link that I posted or receives similar in-game mail DO NOT FOLLOW IT! It is scammers attempting to steal your information.

Thanks to you players who helped me with this problem, I will be more proactive about my searching in the future.

Thanks,
Synik

Look at the end of that URL. It goes to a .PW domain. Do you really think Anet would use a .PW domain? Report it and delete it.

Note the text at the bottom saying it does not come from the Guild Wars 2 team directly. Messages from ANet will always be affixed with their official logo.

Just like you wouldn’t let someone who claims to be a police officer come into your home when they aren’t even dressed like one, don’t go to any links the mail wishes you to go to.

As for spotting dangerous URLs, there’s some common things you can look for.

1. If you look at the end of that link, it ends in “.pw”, which is not what you’d typically be navigating to for you normal web browsing (i.e. .com or .net websites). Most sites managed by ANet are .com websites. Anything after a / following the .com is not a different domain.

2. Also, they have a lot of odd gibberish in them. If there was an official link ANet wanted you to go to, it’d likely be properly formatted in some way, such as “https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/Scam-or-Anet” (the link to this thread) instead of some weird number of jumbles and letters.

3. Lastly, note that the website does not use the secure hypertext transfer protocol. That is, the website uses “http://” instead of “https://”. Often times, websites dealing with secure information (i.e. use account details) will be using “https://”, so any link you spot without that is likely making fake claims.

And 4. ArenaNet doesn’t warn you that they’re going to ban you. They just ban you, and then you have to communicate with them to resolve it. The only “warnings” you get are in the TOS and sometimes announcements on the forums (like Chris’ warnings about 3rd-party gold buyers being banned).

Did you report it? Then Anet will do something about it. It’s pretty hard for them to ban scan/hacked accounts that are doing this if people don’t report it. And the people sending those emails will just hack another account to send the mail from. So it’s a never ending battle.

Often times, websites dealing with secure information (i.e. use account details) will be using “https://”, so any link you spot without that is likely making fake claims.

Want just to add that when a site are using secure transfer protocol like in “https:/”, then you will also be able to make sure in browser for what kind of certificate that will be in use for communication between broser and server (in Firefox you will find a symbol looking like a small lock before “https:/”; click on it and you will see what authority certificate and more information about validity etc).

I don’t think you mentioned that in the thread you created. If you gave away your information, you should not only change your account password, but your email password, as well, and contact the CS Team and let them know you gave away all your account information (including your Serial Key).

Good luck.

Hi Gaile,

Can you please suggest to the development team that they simply add the option for players to block receiving mail from other players. Such a simple fix that would really work.

Cheers
