I’m another who’d like to add my voice to the requests for a physical authenticator instead of a mobile one = ] it’s great for all those people who have and like smartphones, but I’m not one of them, so if there was a keyfob style authenticator or something, I’d be straight there. But thanks heaps for giving us a mobile one to get started with! = ]

I have an LG Cosmos 1. There is a 2 version but it’s hardly different.
I have used the blizzard mobile dial-in (texting) authenticator in the past but they retired it.
I can not manage a smart phone any time soon so this is something I would like but I only have a basic texting phone. I can’t do data on this one unfortunately.

How easy or difficult is it to remove and re-add the Authenticator?

I ask because my plan is currently up and I’ve been thinking about upgrading my phone. So, if I get the Authenticator on my current phone, and then get a new phone, will I be able to easily switch from the Authenticator on my old phone to the one on my new phone?

I’d hate to get the Authenticator on my old phone only to be unable to switch to the one on my new phone and effectively locking myself out of my own account.

I believe that every authenticator has its own unique serial number which you can use to register with authenticator on a new device to be able to use it with your account. At least that was the case with blizzard authenticator for android platform.

The key to remember, Selenic, is to deactivate the Authenticator before you swap phones, as you’ll need the old Authenticator still to log in to do so. Thats the easy way.

If you forget and end up not having the old authenticator, its not the end of the world. You just have to go through the account recovery process, instead of hitting a single button in your Security tab. Which is something I have not needed to do just yet, so I’m unsure of the hassle/time/difficulty.

Love the new feature, just a small suggestion for usability: please move the focus to the input box where you enter the code when you start the game.

Thanks!

Does your current phone have wi-fi? Got a wireless router or AP as well? You can use the old phone as a dedicated authenticator rather than migrating to the new one. If I was getting a new smartphone to replace what I currently have, I would use the old one as a dedicated authenticator. Just thought you could consider this idea instead of migrating all the auth keys (including GW2) into the new phone.

What I would like to know is will this app be in the respective APP stores? I know that no official APPs can be installed on Windows Phone 7 or 8 unless M$ evaluates it first and puts it in the store. There is no way for Anet to have the app here as a download link unless it somehow is instructing ZUNE software to install it with M$ blessing…

GW2 is simply using Google’s own Google Authenticator application. It looks like there is indeed a version on Windows Phone 7.

I would REALLY LOVE to not get disconnected five times a night for protecting my account with a mobile authenticator.

I’d definitely buy a key fob authenticator. I play with roms too much on my Android phone to use the mobile implementation.

Add in my vote for a physical model!

Hey, first of just let me say – thanks! It’s great to see that you’ve got an authenticator solution for us. I’ve used authenticators on all my other major MMO’s without issues, and was really looking forward to this one.

Then I realized that you were using the infamous Google Authenticator.

This is quite a let down for me, since it’s plagued with a horrible user interface, won’t scan the QR-codes that you supply, removes my tokens once I switch of the app or whenever I upgrade it, or, just at random – meaning that I’m locked out of the game, and the forms anytime the app decides that “it’s time to erase the tokens”. This is a known issue, and quite a massive pain to deal with.

Also, keeping in regard, the great attention to detail in your user interface and graphic polish – two traits that guildwars2 has become famous and loved for – I honestly though you’d push your own, custom, cool, or at least somewhat themed authenticator instead of the atrocious Google hack.

Sorry for the vitriol. I just got locked out of another night of playing due to the bugged google product – and as soon as I managed to unlink the thing, I deleted it from my iPhone. And it’s not going back any time soon.

I’ll rather live in fear of hackers and await an inhouse developed authenticator that breathes the same kind of polish and usability as your other products. Google have done a lot of great things, their authenticator on the iPhone however, not one of them.
