Hey guys,

So for the past few weeks my Guild Wars 2 seems to be crashing primarily (but not exclusively) in main cities like Divinity’s Reach, Vigil Keep etc.

Relevant System specs are as follows:

  • Processor: Intel i7k (not overclocked)
  • GPU: GTX670 SLI
  • Power Supply: Seasonic Platinum 1000W
  • 16G Corsair RAM
  • Noctua Heatsink & Fans

If you need anymore details let me know. Crash report is under the spoiler so you can open/close it at will. Due to the world limit in this post, I have included what I think is relevant in the crash, I can provide what isn’t there if you need it.

Cheers,

I have been getting constant crashes as well. They are random. It can be 2 minutes in game, 45 mins, or 2 hours.

Only has started happening since the patch.

You are running out of memory due to the 32 bit OS RAM limitation.

Your best option is to upgrade to a 64 bit OS – otherwise you’re just wasting all that memory because a 32 bit OS kernel can’t make use of it (well, certain versions can, but most home users don’t install server OS’).

My system has also been crashing since the last update. As with the others, it happens at random times.

I am running Win7 64 bit with 12 GB of ram, so it’s not a 32 bit OS or memory issue.

And, if it wrote one, I certainly don’t know where it is…
When it crashes, the computer goes black and stops. No log file written as far as I can find.
I updated my video driver, and even wiped and reinstalled Guild Wars 2.
But, to no avail. It still does it.

Hi there,

You say that your system isn’t overclocked, but do you still have the Turbo Boost feature enabled? This has been known to cause crash issues, particularly in areas such as large cities, events, WvW, etc.

Checked my BIOS. The turboboost was set to auto…
I disabled it and tried again…

Played for a minute or two, then black screen, then the computer locks. Have to reset it.

No log files written anywhere that I can find.

sigh And it’s been working fine since more than a year before this recent update… I"m having to play it on my laptop…

Mudge, my husband’s comp is doing the exact same thing, and has for more than a month. Working with support we reached the point where they said ‘reinstall your OS’. Guess what I did over the weekend? Yup. Reformatted and reinstalled everything. Guess what his comp did again today, Monday after said weekend? Yup. played, blackscreen, comp locks, monitor says ‘no signal’. reboot, no event files except ‘unexpected shutdown’ because we had to hard reboot.

That’s probably a hardware issue – most likely a defective video card or power supply.

Many Thanks! I will acquire a 64 bit OS and report back. Kind of a bummer that I’d need to do a clean OS install. Are you saying that all 32 bit operating systems have this issue? Because a mate of mine is running 32, almost an identical set up actually, and does not have this issue…

Obviously there are variables. But I don’t think I’m putting much stress on my PC…

Hi Ashely,

Thanks for the reply. No I am not currently using the Turbo Boost intel feature, I don’t even have the GUI installed. Do you think the cause could be related to Abomally’s suggestion above?

Thanks

Vid card was swapped out, still had the issue. PSU was tested by a computer repair company and it is fine. Swapping out the MOBO and CPU as soon as the parts come in, thinking it may be the vid card socket, of which the current mobo has only one.

Yeah (except for certain server versions), the 32 bit kernel is limited to 4 gig total, although some is reserved for system space. That leaves (roughly) 3.3 Gig that the OS can make use of even if you have more RAM than that.

Also, this limits 32 bit programs to 2 Gig maximum memory usage, unless you add the /3G switch to the boot.ini file.

However, if you want to make use of more than 3.3 Gig of RAM – you’ll need a 64 bit OS.

Hi Sendai,

I think that’s exactly what’s going on here. I had saw that you were getting OOM crash errors but I mistook someone else’s comment saying “But I’m on a 64-bit OS” and assumed that was you and so I looked past that and considered other variables. But yes, what abomally is saying is entirely correct.

I don’t think it is an issue with the 32 bit OS. Yes, you are running out of memory and it will hurt performance.

However, I’m on a 64-bit OS (with 16gb of RAM and always have 10+ gb unused). I keep getting the same OOM crashes. Looking at my logs, this appears to be a result of my virtual memory. I’m not sure if windows isn’t adjusting it or what. I’m going to try hard coding the amount to 1.5 times my ram. That’s my current test. I’ll post back in a couple days if it helps. You could try the same.

I am having exactly the same problem. And I am becoming a little tired of hearing “it’s an hardware video card problem”. Lots of us are having it, and only playing GW2. So? Do we all own defective video cards that crash selectively on GW2?
I have run all diagnostic tests I could and everything seems fine. And now I see even changing the videocard may not solve it. What are we supposed to do, buy a new videocard and hope the game will run fine?
I would honestly like to see more attention going to solve potential causes on the software side…

Same here, this is only happening in GW2 and only since the update. I’ve updated my drivers, checked to make sure all my specks are good – I more than meet all the criteria and have been playing the game fine since beta. (updated my card since then, but that was almost a year ago and no problems)

I have no crashes at all with GW2 or any other program/game. I did the Arah event this morning with probably around 70+ people. Other than a low framerate, I had no issues.

Can you explain why that is?

Ever since the last patch i got crashes at world bosses and mostly when there is a lot going on on the screen. This happens at Jormag and The Karka queen is also a good contender to cause a crash when it is at 15% left.

Many others are experiencing this problem as well. We had a topic with some thoughts on what the cause was but nothing came of it.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Frequent-crashing-1

For me it is almost always when I am in a fractal (Char). So when I get into that particular fractal I change my setting to best performance and sometimes I am able to make it past the gate without crashing only to crash later on. Sometimes it will be moments after I login and am just walking about and I’ll crash out.

This only happens to me in GW2. No other game or activity on my computer causes this to happen to me.
Windows 8.1 (fresh image and fully updated)
Nvidia GTX570 (newest drivers)
16gb RAM
64bit system

I’ve tried a lot of different things (check other thread) and had no success. Now I’m just used to it. I can no longer be the person who initiates a fractal or dungeon. My guild and I are used to my crashes now and I am pretty quick to get back into the game. It is frustrating.

Hi there..

Since the last patch, got a lot of crashes too. After such a crash, I need to restart the computer or I have the game running with a black screen: sound but it’s as if the monitor is disconnected.

One thing I noticed some time ago is that if I play another game, be it on steam or another space MMO, I DO have to restart the comp coz GW2 won’t initialize the graphic card properly..

.. and yes, I did check (and update) the graphic and motherboard drivers.

For me, all the video crashes can’t be resolve unless Anet looks in that part of their game. Either it’s a programming bug or one in a 3rd party dll or such..

That’s all, thanks for reading..

@ Sendai: If you’re looking for a 64bit ISO for your Windows version you can download them here (http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/page-2#post-124821). Just download the ISO matching your Windows Edition and use the same Product Key you have on your current installation.

For anyone concerned, these are legal downloads direct from Digital River.

@ Dosvidaniya: I doubt it’s a virtual memory problem, I have my virtual memory set to a fixed size of 512mb and the game runs without any crashes. 64bit OS here with 8GB Ram.

Also for those running on a 32bit OS, enable the 3GB Switch. A friend with a 3GB DDR2 Ram and a 512MB 9500M GS laptop used to crash often, couldn’t even do big events, we enabled the switch and now the game runs perfectly fine.
