im getting this message
Unable to initialize 3D output. Please verify that you have installed DirectX9 and an updated video driver
the thing is my pc is brand new and so is my screen, im running two Nvidia GTX 660 ti graphics cards, with the latest drivers on a Asus VG278H 3D screen,
it worked fine for a while but now i keep getting this message and it wont let me play.
im getting pretty annoyed at this game now, there is no reason what so ever for it not to play. its not like my hardware is even remotely outdated!
any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I had exactly same problem like you with my VG278H. by the way which driver did you download? Get the latest BETA drivers anyway, I think the one from late August.
Here is what I did:
1. Log in with no 3D and change video settings to FULL display high resolution and adjust to 120Hz.
2. Then log out and in NVIDIA setting panel change the setting – run 3D only in full screen.
That completely solved my problem and I was able to watch it in 3D.

i don’t have the option in game to set it to 120Hz !
i can only select 1920×1080 and 60Hz max,
it also recommends 24Hz for 3D
even with this selected it still wont allow me to select stereoscopic rendering.
i would before but now its constantly greyed out,
Im gutted as it was amazing in 3d when i was working

I actually can’t log in 3D again
So apparently it’s not working very smooth so far…

A couple of questions / suggestions:
@McSHADY – How do you have your monitor hooked up? If you are using HDMI, you won’t see the 120Hz option. On that Asus VG278H the 120Hz 3D is only available via DVI connection. Use the cable that came with the monitor. Works great on my GTX 670.
@Azure – I have a similar challenge with 3D on my setup. It worked ok once and then won’t start in 3D mode again. I found out that if I start the game and then (at the Character Select screen) I press Alt-Enter, wait for the game to reload in a small-windowed box on my desktop, and then press Alt-Enter again – voila, the game loads in 3D properly. Very strange behaviour but it does appear to work.
I hope that may help either, or both of you.

Well it has certainly helped me out. The game is jumping out the screen ever since changing the cable. It’s made a huge difference. The only problem I seem to have now is with the mouse being sluggish. Unresponsive it’s like it’s lagging. Any help with that problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the feed back the community is awesome.

Hi Riker,
I tried to follow you advice but it didn’t work. If I activate 3D I can’t start the game at all because I get that “useful” advice about DirectX 9.0 and latest drivers. If I switch it off and then activate while game is in the window nothing happens.
Somehow this NVIDIA stuff is not very robust. I can perfectly see the nice pics from NIVIDA showcase and their demo’s from a couple of the games – yay, it looks great, but the actual stuff doesn’t work…

I have the same problem as well but thanks to Biff Bash I was able to load the game in 3d stereo. His solution was to open the Nvidia photo viewer with a picture in windowed mode and then start the game, which oddly enough, worked in getting past the launcher error.
I had posted a similar topic and the original answer with Biff Bash is here:

This will be addressed in the next patch and also a handful of other 3D issues.

I was able to run 3D with no issues and then got the same fail code after the patch. Not sure what they “fixed” but its broke now. I’m not interested in work arounds. Just want it working again soon. OP its not your system, its the game.

Adding this to an old thread because I was having this message just now on Win 7, but the resolution was different.
Following a graphics card failure I’d installed a new card and updated the drivers, but got the title message when trying to start GW2, before ever getting into game.
On investigation, dxdiag showed all of the DirectX Features as “Not available”.
I’d had to plug and unplug various graphics cards a few times whilst trying to diagnose my hardware problem, so in the end I decided to start from scratch, and completely uninstalled the graphics card drivers (via the System dialogue). Immediately following the uninstall, the DirectX features (with the exception of Direct3D Acceleration) showed as Enabled, which I felt was a promising sign. After a couple of system restarts (during one of which Windows located and reinstalled the drivers, saving me the trouble), the problem had gone.

I had this issue and it tuned out to be the overlay option on mumble voice comms. I have turned it off for now and GW2 runs fine, I will try a re-install of mumble later.
Hope this helps someone else.
Configure—>Settings
Overlay – Uncheck – ‘Enable Overlay’
Turns out it was because Mumble was running as Administrator.
