You’ll note in the first email we sent you that it says you do not have to click that link, as it is simply part of our process to assigning you an account.

You’ll be receiving your credentials shortly. J

Thanks,

I send them a mail asking if it the link in the mail change e-mail was legit and I received the above response. I think we’re safe.

As Kirk explained, please do not click the link. The e-mail is confusing, but it’s forewarned in the preceding e-mail from the Edge of the Mists team, so look for that first e-mail and then don’t click the link and you’re good.

Please let your support personnel know as when I asked them about the emails, I was told the following:

The e-mail you have received is not an official e-mail from the Guild Wars 2 Support Team or from ArenaNet. It is most likely a phishing attempt. Please DO NOT click on any links within that e-mail. We will not send e-mails that state that your account will be terminated if you do not respond. We will not send e-mails that state that an account has been compromised (unless we are responding to a player). Any e-mails of this type are most likely malicious in intent.

For the Edge of the Mists registration, you should have also received one stating to disregard that email as it is part of the process. Unfortunately, that’s the only one of the emails that seems to be getting filtered out as spam, so make sure you check there for it. If it wasn’t sent around the same time as the EotM emails, I’d contact support.

Phishing Attempt (request #180448)

Thanks, Enko. I’m afraid that was an agent mistake. As I mentioned previously, the Edge of the Mist invitation is legitimate, and it is preceded by an e-mail telling folks that they’ll get an e-mail saying changes were made but they should ignore that.

Would-be phishers undoubtedly will try to use this system, so we’re taking every care we can to make it clear what invitees should expect and how they should react. In this case, you were wise not to click anything, particularly since nothing needed to be clicked in the process that was used.

Sorry for the alarm, and I hope you enjoy testing!

Is this a real email from Arenanet? I thought it was at first, but then I noticed some of the elements on the website were off, like the login link.

The email looks pretty legit, but takes me to this url:

account.guildwars2.comezjbj ….. 12mcic-tr43qe-bm4suhv-uz3h9-xl4mt2.tk/

Then, after I put in my serial numbers, I had suspicions. Some of the website CSS wasn’t the same as the official, (login link, footer links) but pretty close.

Anyways, I haven’t logged in my account for about 7 months, but then just logged in last week for a couple hours. Is this email real and I have to verify my account or is this fake?

If it’s fake, they have my email, character name and serial number now, that’s what I entered in before stopping….

You have been phished. That is a phishing email. You should immediately change the passwords to your game and the email address associated with it. You might contact CS and explain you have given others your serial number, etc., and ask to have the email associated with your account changed to another.

Please remove the link from your post, so that others don’t inadvertently click on it.

Its fake fake fake – not only is the English appalling but anet do not send out emails such as this.

Did you also supply your password?

I would strongly advise you to 1. remove the link from your post and 2. open a support ticket to change the email address associated with your account and explain to them that you have given your serial code to scammers.

Unfortunelty, that’s basically what they need for a password reset. If you haven’t, contact support immediately as advised above. Make sure you have another email account to use – you will want to change your email.

Good Luck! And remember, Anet never initiates emails of a support nature with you.

Yea I’m quite wary of anything related to game accounts that shows up in my inbox… just received this version today, and have had the selling account one filter to my spam previously. I notice an uptrend in them, getting alot of D3/WoW ones filtered to spam and now I’m getting one GW2 at least once a month turn up.

Thankfully there is this wonderful thread to determine if it’s legit or not!

Would just like to inform you that it seems that I received a phising mail that actually went through my spam filter. Ive had many mails before but they never got through the spam filter up till now.

I also thought the timing of the mail was strange seeing as I made a ticket 2 days ago because I got a new router and thus ip address and could not login to my account due to the authenticator.

Just wondering if this mail is truly a phising attempt.

Here it is.

I’d suggest removing the path to the phishing site, but other than that it’s good to know that sometimes they get through the spam filters.

I am very concerned that your e-mail account may have been compromised. Answer questions VERY carefully at this point, since someone may be reading your mails and gaining all the information that you share. I suggest that you create your own ticket with a different e-mail account and contact Support so that they can investigate.

I could be overly concerned and this may all be just fine. But you’re worried, and I share your concern about this. When someone tells me that a password reset request was submitted but not by them that’s one area of concern. When you get “prove you own the account” requests, that’s an even higher level of concern.

Please let me know how this sorts out.

Is this thing for real? anyone else get this? I am making sure this isn’t a phishing attempt or something, because it is asking a little too much information for comfort. I also haven’t done anything special in gw2 that I feel deserve this kind of e-mail. The only abnormal thing is I found lion’s arch to be super laggy today, and I had trouble navigating the trading post in LA. (i just move to dvinity’s reach and I was fine)

They send these emails out randomly. They don’t actually know whether or not you own the game. I’ve gotten one telling me I need to verify my Blizzard account and I’ve never owned a Blizzard game. The people who don’t have a GW account simply delete these emails and since they can’t post on the forum, you will never hear from them.

The issue is, I have not play gw2 for a long time; have never seen such e-mail. Yet as soon as I start to be a bit more consistent in gw2, this e-mail show up.

It could either be coincidence that it show up now… or somehow these criminals really did get my e-mail from gw2. I hope it was just coincidence.

It’s just a coincidence, don’t try to read too much in to it. My mother is 89, she has never been anywhere near a video game and she got this email as well. As someone else said, I get email all the time to reset my Blizzard account, which I do not even have.

Got several of these mails already but i instantly saw it was a scam because same thing happen to me couple of year ago on Steam where a “friend” send me a steam link long story short.
Don’t trust any of those so called awsome offer from a friend(unless you know them(IRL) for quite a while and they are trustworthy (but even then)) or any “your account is…” mails. Those are 75% scams. Most game companies will more likely send you a mail and say something we saw… please check your account on our site(no view/login) with a message if this wasn’t you please change password/send message to support
And as an example i’ll add a nice example they send to me … AGAIN

You make good points. I’d like to add that even the most trustworthy e-mails can be phishing attempts, if your friend or family member has his/her e-mail account compromised. I have gotten e-mails allegedly from very close, very well-trusted people, but I take one look at think “Nah, I’ll pass” because it’s something very sketchy, like “You have to see this! with a link.” I think we all should be very aware that most compromises involve e-mail accounts, so it’s good to be very, very skeptical about anything that comes into one’s e-mail inbox!

Just received an e-mail which I’m sure is fake. Decided to look around and sure enough I find this topic, glad my suspicions were correct. For those who are in doubt, my advice is ( until you learn what fishing is ) let it play out. Worst case scenario (which is HIGHLY unlikely) your account gets frozen and you contact Customer Support to discuss the whys and what you can do to fix it. But 99% of the time, these are fake – wait the time out and then you’ll find that nothing has happened to your account.

Better to be patient and safe rather than fall for this junk and do something you will regret.
