Black Screen/ Start problem
IF your system is crashing to the extent of physical shut down then its likely headed towards hardware failure.
Could be
- Overheating, you can clean the dust/fan
- Dying GPU, you can try underclocking
- PSU power issues
- See Part 5.1 here for tools

It’s not his hardware, it is GW2. SEVERAL people, including me, have the exact same issue. There have been several posts regarding it.
My problems started this past Sunday, January 20th.
I get very laggy, takes several seconds to turn or target then BLACK SCREEN POWER SAVE MODE.
Thanks for answering him and giving suggestions. It is much appreciated, but it is a GW2 problem.
There isn’t a hardware problem. I played the game for 4 months without problems and suddenly this **** is happening.
Today I got the “power mode” black screen crash right before reaching the login/character screen…this ist so strange
Blackscreen issue is known to have a wide range of causes from hardware to software drivers or even network setting etc. Hardware and even software can deteriorate over time. PITA to troubleshoot and requires process of elimination to narrow down.
Easiest way to rule out software conflicts is to do fresh install of OS/drivers/game.
Easiest way to rule out hardware issue is to swap parts and test.

I too was having crashing issues with my GTX295. I could play maybe 20mins or maybe 5secs. Tech support was zero help. I just kept going round and round in circles doing the same things over and over with them.
I resolved my issue by going in and lowering my memory and core bus speeds by 100.
1. Open Nvidia Control Panel
2. Go to “Adjust GPU settings”
3. Select “Custom Clock Frequencies”
4. Mine are set to “501 core bus” and “930 memory bus”
5. I haven’t had a single crash and my FPS even improved. I am able to play on highest settings and my card stays under 50 degress C.
My gpu settings are:
graphics clock: 576 MHz
memory clock: 1008 MHz
processor clock: 1242 MHz
Should I try graphics and memory clock " – 100" too?
…btw why exactly 100 MHz?
Like i said before, it looks more like most of those crashes are coming while using a geforce graphic card… If you don’t agree, go look at all the posts here, and count how many uses a nvidia and how many uses an ati.
Just for curiosity, try to disable physx engine in your gpu settings.
I’m having a sapphire vapor X, and the game is running very smooth even on max. iIm not a genie or something, but if it works, it works.
As far as I know, this is not rocket science we do…
I say -100 because that is usually a good amount to reduce your speeds by w/o noticing much performance difference.
Thanks for the advice. I will try it.
Thx man! You solved my problem (:
So letting your graphic card running at a lower clock frequencies solved the problem…. So nvidia isn’t that good after all if they make cards that can’t run the standard settings :P
I will bump this thread. After the last patchthe problem returned….any advice? I love GW2 but I hate the technic…..
Now just seems to crash while playing the new content.
