Was there a game update today or something? My game was running fine today, no problems ever, logging in, changing maps, etc. Went to dinner, came back and now as my character is phasing into the game upon launch my computer shuts down and restarts. Every single time. Like I said the game was running fine earlier today. I’ve made no changes, except updating to the latest Nvidia driver after the problem started happening.

My temps aren’t going above 50 celcius on the processor.

Logged into SWTOR and D3 and could run those games no problem. Tried GW2 gain, computer restarts.

Specs:

*Windows 7 64 bit – latest service pack *it updated in the last few days not sure which it’s on atm

*1TB HD
*12 mb DDR3 RAM
*Gigabyte X58A-UD3R MOBO
*Nvidia GTX570
*Intel i7-960 3.20GHZ

nothing is overclocked

Like I said, game was running fine earlier today, have made no hardware/software changes at all and game causes computer to restart. Updated driver to 306.97 and problem persisted. Went to a legacy driver 301.42 and problem persisted.

Any help would be great. Thank you.

Have tried Nvidia drivers:
306.97
306.23
301.42
currently using 304.79

same problem, computer runs fine, gpu temp 56C, log into game get to character screen, temps remain 40C on processor and 56C on gpu, try load into game, computer shuts down and restarts.

Any help or suggestions?
Thank you.

try this

start menu>run>cmd(get a command window up) in that window type “chkdsk /f” without the " marks, then hit enter, then Y, then restart your system, let the check run.

after you do that, run ccleaner and let it clean out junk files form your system, this is a big help to random problems with many games and apps, cant tell you how many times its fixed related issues for me.

good luck

Jazhara I don’t know exactly what that did, but I did it and am using driver 304.48 and got into the game.

Thank you for your response.

it repaired errors on your HDD, that where causing problems
ccleaner cleaned out files that could have been causing issues as well.

and your welcome, feel free to add me to your contacts in game

IF your computer is literally powering down (no blue screen, just shuts off with no error) then your PSU is damaged. If your computer is blue screening Then this could most likely be a memory stick that went bad, but it could also be your hard drive that went bad too.

yes… a complete power down would definitely indicate a psu fault….

strange since what i suggested worked……guess you guys are wrong…….

I have seen this before, its shocking how often a run of chkdsk then ccleaner run can fix random weird issues, even ones others (and myself) would at first assume was hardware failure…..

many times stuff people would do a full reinstall due to, are fixable with the same method, once had a system where if you plugged in any usb storage device it wouldnt work, driver error, the guy I use to work with said “just do a clean install” i was about to but decided to try a chkdsk /f first, it found 2 minor errors and after restart the system worked flawlessly….

heres the thing, windows despite having good error recovery isnt good about letting the user know WTF went wrong, you gotta intuit that yourself, clearly I must have Intuited correctly since it worked and he was in game for over an hour last night(added him to my contacts)

a hdd with a few corrupt files won’t completely shutdown, it might report a corrupt file or just ignore it.

tbh, it sounds like the psu is failing under hdd load. I’ve seen that happen more then enough times…..

again, funny that you say i dont know what im talking about when he was in for over an hour last night (when i quit game) without it happening……

guess im just an idiot whos never seen anything like this before…..oh wait…..

sorry Squall Leonhart, but it wont report such probelms and wont ignore it, also drive bitmap errors can cause this, and are quite common, specially after unplanned shutdowns/crashes…..windows dosnt auto run chkdsk’s as much as it use to….

good luck explaining why my stupid fix worked when it must be a hard fault.

drive..bitmap errors? lol..

Well the thing is you didn’t tell us what exactly happened. Was it a bluescreen/reboot? or did you system shut off? I have fixed a few PCs where the HD was going bad so after 1-20 minutes of use (I actually managed to pull 12 gigs of pictures and home movies off in between a few boots, it was very random) it would bluescreen because some windows system data got corrupted when loaded. Bad memory is usually trickier, I usually had to run 3d mark’s for 20-30 minutes to force a crash to test sticks.

Powerdowns however are something that can’t even be triggered by the OS without a user prompt, so if your computer literally shut down, lights out, either your PSU cut the power or the mother board did. If it was this then don’t count your little check disk as being an actual fix, I think your problem still exist and at the moment infrequently pops up.

just gonna say your wrong on the fact the system cant just shutoff due to file system errors…they cause all sorts of crazy stuff.

and its actually “volume bitmap errors” (google it, you will find its quite common)
http://waa.ai/kAR

these can cause all sorts of crazy kitten from windows….stuff it shouldnt be able to cause….but it does…..would need to ask a programmer from MS why that is, but they probably wouldnt admit it can happen because they dont wana get fired for admitting windows has its flaws….(all os’s have their flaws, and all have irrational fixes for weird errors…its just the nature of software)

I find that ibt or p95 with custom sizes is better for testing ram sticks, I tend to be able to track down memeory errors in 10-15min, infact, found that a macbook had bad memory (1 stick bad 1 good) the other day….thankfully the guy had bootcamp installed…..pulled a stick, ran p95 with custom size and ram use, let it run, first stick was fine, within the first 7 min the other one started chucking errors then caused the system to fully power off(not restart. not bsod, but flat out turn off) contacted the apple store, thankfully the guy I use to work with was able to just sell the guy an apple certified ram kit(guy wouldnt let me just stick normal ram in it, insited apple ram was better quality…..kid you not, so he spent 4x the price he should have on ram….lol)

I do agree ram can be a pain specially if its a random fault that only happens after heavy use…..

Oh theres a trick for hdd errors like what you describe, put the drive in the freezer for an hour or so, then backup ur data , if its gonna take a while pack the drive in icepacks(wrap it in non-conductive plastic first) the cold tends to stabalize the chips that are flaky…..once had to pack an old 800gb scsi drive in dry ice to back it up…..talking a drive that used 3×5.25 bays….the guys whole business was stored on this old hp server system(386+385 cpu’s) and the drive failed…..it was a real chore to get the data off that drive….the dryice pack worked tho, we got the data off, and then put the hdd in our ancient hardware display at the shop….(not kidding on size, the kitten thing was HUGE)

still think start with the simple fixes first then move to replacing hardware.

dust out system
run chkdsk+ccleaner
if that dosnt work replace the psu.

theres no harm in testing, and if it can save a few bucks, no harm done

Volume Bitmap errors are usually benign, stuff like free space marked in MFT Allocated area.

Offtopic, but,

shutting down doesn’t have to be clicking “Shutdown” at all. First possibility is to set system G3/S6 state through a PCI call, all it takes is ring0 (eg administrator) access. Second way is to flag the PROCHOT MSR followed by sending #THERMTRIP on the system bus (might not work on AMD machines).

Likewise, a hard lockup can be achieved by sending a PCI call to change a device state into the state it’s already at (eg GPU D0 -> D0). What this does is overwrite the current memory space with what the driver defines as ‘fresh’, and will have extremely unpredictable effects (usually driver problems).

Just checked the forums again after my problem was solved. I thought I would clear a few things up for everyone who posted. I listed my computer specs above so please refer back if you have any questions in that regard.

Here is exactly what happened with my computer and the issue I experienced.

I played GW2 for several hours Saturday afternoon with no problems. I even watched a couple movies on my computer, watched some YouTube videos, while playing GW2, again with no problems.

I went to dinner, left my computer on, but all programs closed.

Returned and logged into GW2, got to my character screen, and upon “zoning in” or actually entering the game my computer would shut down and restart. I did not press any shut down/power button. The computer would just shut itself down and reboot/restart whatever you want to say. It would shutdown/restart every time I actually tried going past the character screen.

I don’t know if SWTOR or Diablo3 require more or less resources than GW2 but I had no problem logging into those and playing those games. The computer would only shut down on GW2.

I tried updating my video driver, actually tried different versions after reading people were having the same problems, to no avail.

Jazhara made a suggestion and I tried that, and it solved my problem. I have been back up and running with no problems ever since. I did change my video driver to a different version at the same time.

So PSU failure or whatever other suggestions could have been reasonable suggestions as well, but in this case that isn’t the issue. My 800 watt PSU is still motoring along and like I said I have had no further issues.

Thanks for everyone’s attempts to offer advice and help. It is all appreciated.

could this be associated with lets say a fresh install of nvidia drivers, with 2 gtx 690, and the controll panel doesnt properly see all 4 gpu’s?

Not quite. Pretty much the only use for changing device states is power management (wake, sleep, suspend, and manufacturer-defined D1/D2 states).

If those GPUs are showing up in device manager, check your SLI bridge. Then try those two separately. And if it still doesn’t work then idk cause I’ve never had an issue once with tri-580’s.

Wouldn’t result in a total power off though.

Ah, what motherboard you got? theres a couple that need each card installed one at a time with a driver update.

i had some hope as i read this post , the OP had almost the same Issue then me and the same graphic card… but my PC (cold)restart after 5 min in SPVP with Medium (auto) graphic…

Any Idee else , Jazhara Knightmage ? i follow your instructions 100% but it was useless for me T_T

you can use /f or /r (the /p is for if your doing it from a bootable cd)

yes the same commend should work on any other system, if you check other posts I have made theres a list of stuff you can try.

dust out your system

run ccleaner

checkdisk

chkdsk /f or /r (r takes alot longer but also checks the drive for bad sectors)

the best way to do a chkdsk is from command line

start>run>cmd
in the window type “chkdsk /f” without the " marks, then enter, then y then enter, then restart.

if you need to check more then one hdd, you can add the drive letter to the end of the command example: “chkdsk /r d:” (replace d with whatever drive letter you need to check)

asus x79 sabertooth, I tried actually using the one card on a fresh install, then addin the other card after installing the drivers. Windows detects the 2nd card and nvidia begins installing various drivers for the second card, but it never finishes the insatll. There are about 8 diffrent driver insatalls and 2 never finish I dont remember what they are but if I need to reinstall I will let you know.
