I’m having the exact same issue. Was afraid that it was my ISP that was the culprit since I hadn’t heard about anyone having the same issue yet.
I’d have to agree with you though, I think it’s on Anet’s side of things. My brother and I are on the same internet connection and he’s still playing at the moment while I’m getting (oKB/sec) on the downloader and can’t get in to the game.
The same is happening here. Updates are very slow, and in game, I get occasional lag spikes. I suspect this is just because of traffic though.
I think I’m having a similar problem. I was updating the game, got to 99% (typical, right?) and it stops. It says I have 1 file remaining but until that’s done, I can’t play I did the update on my laptop and it went smoothly, but on my desktop computer that I’m on now, it’s been happening since Tuesday for me. I’ve tried quitting and reopening but not changing anything.

Evile Six, try changing the language in the top right corner to French or German (not Spanish), once it completes, switch it back.
As for the slow download… The traffic could have an effect, but it is also relevant to know what “slow” is in regards to download. The speed of your download is important info to know when trying to figure out the issue.
As for not downloading, have you tried any of the standard troubleshooting steps?
I know Bhima is using MSE, however, some of the newest patches have been known to trigger system protection at times and could potentially block gw2 from downloading… Sometimes it’s best to just disable it until after. Or running msconfig to disable all startup programs, restart computer, run gw2. You can re-enable after by repeating and restarting.
Sometimes restarting your comp can fix it. Or restarting modem/router.
And sometimes deleting the local.dat (my documents/guild wars 2) file can help too.
There are other things, but these are easy basics to try.

Same issue, starting two days ago. Client updates are glacial – Tuesday’s hotfix took almost four hours to pull down. Rebooting doesn’t help, and no other internet traffic is affected. The first patch on Tuesday came down as normal, close to max speed for my connection.
If traffic load is the problem now, I shudder to think what the upcoming free weekend is going to be like :/
FYI, free trial weekends are wicked with LAG!
Think of your server on the first 2 days of new content and multiply that by 5 lol. Avoid starter zones and big cities if you are prone to lag.
i am also experiencing this problem
the splash screen will sit for 35 mins just saying downloading. and then it suddenly finishes only to have to download another new patch that’s tiny yet took me 3 hours.. sigh once in game i was placed into over flow maps every where i went….
i will try deleting the local.dat file
as i’ve already restarted modem so that’s not going to be a great help, if that doesn’t help i will attempt to disable firewall / antivirus.
any other suggestions or people having this splash screen problem.?
After that, try msconfig as listed above.
If nothing works, maybe post a game advisor report.

just to provide an update, adding the “-repair” on the end and delteing the local.dat file, fixed my problem i had happy gamming all weekend long
