Ok I have this problem where my game crashes if my graphics are on medium to high appearance. This is the error message I get:

—> Crash <—
Out of Memory: arena=Default, cat=Packfile, allocBytes=10484652, arenaBytes=233949384, fallbackBytes=37239348, align=0 ,
App: Gw2.exe
Pid: 5048
Cmdline:
BaseAddr: 00400000
ProgramId: 101
Build: 16130
When: 2012-12-02T18:30:15Z
Uptime: 0 days 1:43:19
Flags: 0”

Anyone know of any game or PC settings I can modify to help prevent this happen or am I stuck not utilising my pretty graphics? Thanks!

Hi Nayaru – What graphics card might you be using? While this is an unfortunate limitation of 32-bit operating systems, there are a couple of things that we can try and look into to resolve this though please understand that ultimately this issue may not be resolved due to this limitation.

Hi,

I’ve had the same problem for a while, and found some advice for it that helped me get rid of it. If your issue is caused by the same factors as mine was, it might help you too. If you’re running Windows 7 on 32-bit with an NVIDIA graphics board, you might want to give this a try.

usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=9583842&linkID=9240697

(You’ll have to copy/paste that link into your browser manually.)

It describes how to make more system memory available to applications. It’s a support page for a different software product, but the actions it describes are related to general Windows behavior and also benefit GW2.

Here’s the relevant part:

To enable the 3GB switch on Windows Vistaâ„¢ or Windows 7:

  1. Right-click Command Prompt in the Accessories program group of the Start menu. Click Run as Administrator.
  2. At the command prompt, enter “bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVa 3072”
  3. Restart the computer.

Read the link carefully though, you might need to undo this change if your system starts misbehaving in other way. The link also has 3-step instructions of how to turn it back off.

Also, setting your resolution to “Windowed Fullscreen” in the in-game video options appears to improve things, if you’re not running like that already.

I hope this helps.

Sorry for slow reply and the schoolboy error, always post specs. lol Which I will do now while trying out Manasa Devi’s suggestions.

AMD Athlon™ II X3 450 Processor 3.20 GHz
4GB RAM (3.12 usable)
32 Bit Windows 7.

Nvidia GeForce GT 220

I’ll edit with results of the above suggestion after I’ve allowed enough time. Thanks guys!

P.S: Forgot to mention this has actually started happening while using the graphics preset “Best performance” now too. Suggestion implemented… fingers crossed.

Ashley, you do know that the official minimum systems specs listed by Anet don’t say anything about needing a 64 bit operating system, right? And you do know that those official minimum specs only call for 2 gig of RAM, right? By now just about everyone who has already bought GW2 knows that the 4 gig limitation of a 32-bit OS is going to mean constant out-of-memory crashes even with the in-game graphics set to absolute minimum levels, but why are you folks continuing to mislead prospective buyers regarding what will run this game acceptably by not updating your published minimum specs?

Kindly use your own thread to pick at Arenanet. Quote if you have to.

Anyway, 4 hours, no crashes. Going to try turning the graphics up some and will update as I go. Thanks.

I just heard from someone that the link I posted above didn’t work. I’ve fiddled with it, and found I can’t get the link to work properly with this forum’s external redirection warning system. You’ll have to copy/paste it into your browser address bar. I edited my earlier post to make this clear.

I hope your crash-free run holds up Nayaru. Thanks for updating about your progress, I’m interested to hear if this is a viable fix for more people.

I have news for you .. you don’t own a thread just because you started it. Out-of-memory crashes are a universal problem for anyone who doesn’t have considerably more memory than Anet’s recommended minimum, and it’s certainly worth pointing out that the only semi-official response from Anet on the issue essentially admits that.

I have news for you. In a tech support forum you’ve done nothing to aid arenanet in helping to fix their problem and have done nothing to help me to workaround said problem. Your posts here have nothing worth pointing out. You’re only posting your displeasure which has no value and is pretty selfish to do when someone is just wanting help. You would do well to rethink your motives and actions, although after seeing your type all over the place that will be falling on deaf ears.

On topic, sorry I should probably ignore trivialities like the above poster. Shamelessly admitting todays playtime which has been pretty constant since I implemented your fix Manasa, haven’t had any problems at all. Thank you very much. Giving your fix a thumbs up.

P.S: Kind of ironically I had to turn the graphics down again during a TA run because 3 ele’s a mesmer and a guardian produced so many flashy spell effects I couldn’t tell when Malrona was executing attacks to put up reflects! lol
