Network Lag [Merged]
5:27 pm germany. And it’s lagging. 5:40 i can play the story without any lags!
(edited by raubvogel.5071)
The lag is killing me in game and in rl. When do they plan to fix this. Before last patch i had no problems. Now i lag at random some areas unplayabe some are fine.
It’ll be one of the relays somewhere between EU and their servers in Dallas that’s broken again. That was the problem last time, and it’s also been the problem in the past with Guild Wars 1.
If you’ve got access to a VPN that allows you to take a different route to their servers in Dallas, it’ll work.
Changing ISP in the same country? Won’t change a thing.
I don’t know that even that will help. I actually live in Texas, and I’m a half hour drive to Dallas, and I’m getting lagged OUT of the game. It’ll slow, then stop, then I get the big bad disconnected notice and kicked back to character select. Then 50/50 whether it will FURTHER kick me back to the log in screen. So whatever the problem is, it’s not in the middle there. It has to be something on the server. The problem is too widespread to pin it on simple geography.
the game is very laggy especialy in WvWvW when there is fight like 80vs80vs80 in the same area you cant use skills

I thought this was pretty interesting, hope it helps to eventually solve the issue.

I have the same packet-loss problem even before the patch, followed all the steps that ncsoft support asked me to, the conclusion was that it’s my ISP’s fault.
Then I did contact my ISP with every detail, log and test. Tracert showed that packets were going from Greece where I live) to Sofia, BG, then Frankfurt,DE and then ncsoft servers. The packet loss is between BG and DE, so, guess what? Neither my ISP is able to do anything…
And guess what else? I signed a 1-year contract with this ISP recently…
My conclusion is that each case is different, not all of us are having the same problem.
I have experienced no problems with the game ever since but today is just unplayable because of the lag.
I am losing connection a lot of times with no apparent reason.
Same here, game has been so laggy i had to log-off early because i couldn’t stand it.
I have sent a ticket into Anet support with a diagnostic atatchment but i am not holding my breath for them to sort it out because they will either blame it on my ISP or say that my drivers are out of date like they usually do.
Yeah today the game is unplayable for me, too. It is as bad as during the Karka event. I got massive lag and was disconnected every few minutes. Fireing a skill takes ages and participating in events is nearly impossible.
And I have these problems not only near an active world event, but anywhere on any map.
While I had lag issues during the past few days already, it was not nearly as bad as today.
Logging out for the night. Past few days latency has been awful for me on Yak’s Bend and I am in the US. Did not have latency issues prior and its the same on another computer on a different isp (though still in same city). Seems like a network issue since last patch or something…
Any solution for lags? Its unplayable for me..

K ANet, it’s more than half a year after game launch and in the first few months I was always willing to give you the benefit of doubt. The game was young, the inflooding playerbase massive.
But now, I just don’t know. How would you react if Toyota still sold cars with defective pedals (or such that didn’t even start up!) half a year after the problem was brought to light?
I’m irritated. I had to abandon a party in the middle of an intense Fractals run just today simply because somewhat better conditions yesterday after a week of unplayability lulled me in, thinking it had been ameliorated. Then the already bad ping came crashing down around 20:30CET.
This isn’t the first time it happens, I’d say it happens every second major patch at least. Seems like a systematic error.
Please fire your staff responsible for content updates/network harmonization.
In the case that said staff is reading this post right this second (Hi!) I affixed the diag, tho I’m not sure if it helps because overall I’ve done this about two ot three times already and you kinda get cynical about it, because evidently it never results in a lasting solution.

lag galore…. however it really seems to be daily events. but this is not proportional to number of people at event. Sometimes the event is fine with 30+ people… other time, playability is completely shot with only 5 or so people… at least this is what i am seeing. i have had several times where i can see people fighting and everything continues on around me like i am in my only little lag bubble.. and other times it reversed. i.e. i am moving and killing things while others are frozen in space.
just one final note to elaborate, the things i am specifically suffering from is 15+sec skill delays, same delay in trying to pick up items, interacting with things, being stuck in a perma-skill i.e. the cast time…
however i have yet to suffer from disconnection, just waiting and everything “ludacris-speed” rubberbands back to what it should be doing. but i am most likely missing items and kills
I think that is all
very laggy in Wayfarer Foothills
other areas are okay for now. skills stay on cooldowns and npcs are missing.
very frustrating.
Lags really badly nowadays. Game play used to be so much smoother. As a player who plays in WvW 99% of the time, it gets really frustrating when we can’t use our skill set while fighting.
The lag happened ever since the southsun cove event that took place last year, and it has gotten from bad to worst.
Blackgate
whats going on? i am dying constantly in events due to this because of my character lagging skills and stop dancing all over the place. this is ridiculous!
So i logged in yesterday, in the evening, and was having huge lags in sPvP on all the maps, like every day last few weeks. I was trying to find a solution and unbelievably, it looks like i have fixed my lags finally. Sometimes i still get a lag, but it occurs maybe once in 10 minutes and the lag lasts for 3 secs maybe. So no more skill delays and 10 secs lags or even disconnects, the game is finally playable for me. I tried the game today, and still no lags.
Windows 7 Enterprise
ISP: Slovak Telecom
I did these 5 steps:
1. Click the Start menu, then select Control Panel -> Click on Network and Sharing Center -> Click on your primary connection or Local Area Connection under ‘Active Networks’ -> Click the Properties button -> Click once on ‘Internet Protocol Version 4’ and click Properties -> Click the radio button ‘Use the following DNS server addresses:’ and type in the ‘Preferred DNS server’ field this adress: 208.67.222.222 and in the ‘Alternate DNS server’ field adress: 208.67.220.220 -> Click Ok
2. Click the Start menu -> In the search bar type ‘temp’ with a percent sign symbol before and after the word and without the apostrophes, and hit enter-> delete everything from the folder, skip what cant be deleted
3. Click the Start menu -> In the search bar type ‘prefetch’ and hit enter-> delete everything from the folder
4. Click the Start menu -> In the search bar type ‘cmd’ -> In search result RIGHT-click on cmd -> Select ‘Run As Administrator’ -> In the command window type ‘ipconfig /flushdns’, again without the apostrophes as everything what i wrote between them, and then hit enter -> Type ‘Exit’ and hit enter again
5. Download TCP Optimizer here -> http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php -> Once downloaded, RIGHT-click on the .exe file and Run As Administrator -> There are a lot of settings, if you want to play with it, you can, but i just hit in the ‘Choose settings:’ field ‘Optimal’ radio button -> Apply changes, reboot your PC.
Dont forget to empty your recycle bin.. !
Now just start GW2 and try it, i hope it will help at least any of you. Also i tried only sPvP, maybe it will help in WvW and dungeons too.. Give response after you try.
Edit: The lags are back so it was working only for a one day, but still, it seems better than it was..

Yea i’ve been suffering from some awful lags since 3-2 days ago
i have no idea why but seems like in not the only one (server’s desolation)
any idea when its gonna be fixed?
Unplayable lag is back again tonight.
Can’t sign into characters that are in Divinity’s reach. Playing in Krytan regions gets huge lag spikes and average ping of 5000ms.
Come on now, ANET. This has been going on for almost two weeks.

Nice find! It worked for me. I’ll see how it goes. The only issue I had was my ‘temp’ folder not showing up, but I followed the rest of the steps. So far no lag. I’ll keep ya posted.
My good nearly all of my friends get disconnects during primetime. I DONT KNOW WHICH kittenING COMPANY can deny that this is not a game problem…They have a stable connection everywhere but not in gw2!
There is no support and this kitten happens since your february patch….so here is a clever suggestion … look into that what you have changed and test it on your holy and private test servers…It cant be that your game is unplayable for more than 1 weeks now.
(edited by HPLT.7132)
Major lag since 4 days ago. Not sure what changed, but the game is nearly unplayable, even in low populated cities. This lag ranges from 1-2 minute loading screens, 4fps during events and 12-15fps in cities. The game was running fine (25fps+) before Feb patch, Feb patch killed events with lag, but whatever changed this week truly killed the game for me. Will be playing very very little until things clear up.

Attached is my network diag…
Like many people been having massive lag spikes, where it can take a minute or two for each skill to activate, rubber banding is constant, and disconnects happen as well, but usually I get frustrated enough to log out before the d/c’s happen. I am aware I am playing overseas in China, so it isn’t ideal, but the tests I have done with my own ISP, and using a VPN to try to push my connections differently result in the same network lag. I used to get disconnects with no lag before the patch, but now the lag spikes are the most frequent occurring problem, with d/c’s only happening because I confuse the client and server enough to make it kick me.
These problems are occurring in world boss fights 98% of the time, all of them can cause it, but the dragons and shadow behemoth are the most frequent. I have the problem at random in Metrica, and also the Cursed Shores Orr zone while questing, but not as frequent. All throug hFebruary I did not have these issues, it seems the patch previous to the one last week had solved many network related issues, but they are cropping up again, now. Maybe the server is overloaded with too many players, skills, culling and the boss and some of us get hit with a network bug more frequent than others? I always can count a handful who claim the same problem as me during or after a boss fight, usually we are sulking in overflow since a d/c puts us there if we lose our connection.
I appreciate the work you are all doing, if you have any ideas for me, or need more information, I would be pleased to help.

Still can’t play GW2 properly the lag is horrible, tried playing in internet shops and its working fine does it really have to do with the ISP? and that i have to switch ISP just to play that’s just sad

I’m glad it helped you. The temp folder was not showing up, because there have to be a percent sign before and after the word ‘temp’, but somehow, the symbol is not showing in my post even after editing it.

How is your gameplay now, guys? I played for about 3 hours after yesterdays update and there was no lag or dc. Is it just some kind of coincidence or someone fixed something? O_o
Hello everyone. I spent the last few hours trying to pinpoint the failure that is giving me constant severe packet loss against GW2 servers (and ONLY them, no problems whatsoever on any other game or online service).
I gathered some server IP addresses in the game, using the /IP command as instructed previously by the support people, then I ran several traceroutes to find out which routers my packets were traversing, I also plotted a graph with Scapy (I was using port TCP/80 for that particular trace, but I also tried common ICMP trace).
As you can see, the last few hops were consistently 206.127.157.102, 206.127.157.94 and 77.67.71.122, so I concentrated my tests on these, I found out that while 206.127.157.102 had some serious packet loss, 77.67.71.122 was in the 0% range:
Ping statistics for 77.67.71.122:
Packets: Sent = 300, Received = 299,
Lost = 1 (0% lost),
Ping statistics for 206.127.157.102:
Packets: Sent = 300, Received = 260,
Lost = 40 (13% lost),
77.67.71.122 is an IP address for Tiscali international carrier and the problem seems to be between Tiscali (NOT my provider, Fastweb) and NCsoft datacenters.
Also, during the traceroutes I received some strange answers (but the IP addresses were collected yesterday, maybe these NCsoft-internal routes are expired):

NCsoft tech support suggested that I adopted a VPN to eliminate the problem. I can and probably will do that if the problem persists, but it looks like a common networking problem to me and I hope it could be solved by getting ANet/NCsoft networking people to talk with Tiscali’s.

HI A.net, since after the reset of today, I recently got DCed on the dragon events. and pretty much all other world boss that drops chests. It’s really frustrating after waiting for jormag to spawn after 30 mins to about an hour, and getting his hp to 20% with the skills just flashing and not working. Then suddenly, got kicked out of the server or get DCed and when you came back for chest, you’ll be on overflow. Hope you guys fix this within a day or I would be pretty much displeased and it will eat up my love and addiction of the game. thanks and more power
Been lagging like crazy for the past 20 minutes.. on both PvE and WvW. Game just disconnected me and said “Game lost connection to log-in server”, or something to that effect..
As of right now, 1830 German time, I can’t play. It takes 5 seconds to teleport through a keep door, 5+ seconds for skills to go off. Then I get disconnected. I did a speed test and ping test to Dallas servers. 0% PL, 159 ping and 1% jitter. I have had no issues with this game until this last patch.

German user. Currently unplayable due to lag.
Nvm, not fixed. But it was OK until 18:00 CET.
Not sure does posting in such a group-hug topic really helps, but okay:
For the third day, I am experiencing a massive, evening/night only lag. I am aware of my Internet connection’s lameness, and it indeed does slow down at later hours. Lately, though, for the third evening in a row, it has become intolerable, with game’s action being delayed up to ten ten seconds and occasional disconnections occuring. I’d like to learn is it the game’s fault or is my Internet connection responsible. For the record, things are perfectly fine until around 6-7 pm, GMT+1.
Was fine yesterday for me aswell. My internet connection works fine, but the game is effectively unplayable.
I have been playing all day…no problems at all. Until 18:00 CET. Now unplayable. Nobody can say it is my system or my ISP, how is it movement commands are executed immediately but not skills. I really would prefer a stable game rather than the added content. I have only had these problems since F&F started. I never had problems last Halloween or Christmas.
Same lag problems here too. Telekom.de user, from Frankfurt. Last time I had similar problems was the day nobody could log in because of the (supposedly) Level3 fail, and the problems were similar. Perhaps related, perhaps not.
@anet how about a reply with “we’re investigating this”? Im seeing a ton of people all experiencing the same symptoms from all over… and it seems to have started with the most recent patch.
My girlfriend and I are on the same wireless connection and yet she is getting consistently disconnected and experiencing latency frequently. This was not the case until the most recent patch. Nothing in our hardware has changed, and there is no fluctuation in ping that would indicate a network issue being responsible. The server appears to be dropping her when entering areas with a lot of mobs or players, though i cannot be certain that this is the cause (seems to happen consistently when approaching the trading post in Lion’s Arch). This appears to be a side-effect to what I suspect are tweaks to the culling code, but again I cannot be certain of that.
Another evening, another unplayable evening. Speedtest once again confirms that my 10Mbit VDSL connection is running at 10Mbit with 12ms ping and 0 packet loss.
Guild Wars 2? Absolutely unplayable. Not a word from Anet. Joke.
I feel your pain. I just got this issue today. It is lagging like never before. Around 3 to 5 second skill delay and the animations are all rigid and disgusting. Dungeons are impossible. Dragons are not even on my list. WvW lag was around 3 mins and I died. Took another 2 mins to port back to the spawn. Lag spikes constantly. I blame my ISP at the moment but I really hope they can fix it.
The network lag has been insane these last few days. It’s definitely not my ISP as I can play any other online game with 0 lag but GW2 lags like crazy. I am playing on Aurora Glade (EU) from the UK. Last two nights I log in around prime time and the game is unplayable so end up logging off as I can’t play anything with this kind of lag.
Facing same issues as Wolfgang, and I’m from the Middle East. Lag is making the game unplayable. Skills are taking too long to activate if I’m in a battle with 3 or + players in WvWvW (if I run into a zerg, game disconnects). Playing on Crystal Desert, NA server.
And this is not my ISP or firewall’s fault.. lag started around 3 hours ago. Connection is fine on other online games.
@anet how about a reply with “we’re investigating this”?
+1
Does Arenanet even care about the community?
Doing things like asking “Do they even care?” in an important tech support thread is useless and unnecessary. It doesn’t take long for the network and data center guys to review the last 24 hours of posts on here, and add our data into their research to solve these problems, so don’t clutter this thread with unnecessary junk and whining, or they may miss important information like Menaka posted above, or network diag logs. Be helpful, make videos of your troubles, network logs (very easy to make one), and report exactly when and where you have issues. Yeah, this issue sucks and is causing it to be unplayable for many of you outside the US (myself included), but this is a complicated issue with so many variables, we just need to feed them our data, and wait for them to try some changes to the servers or code.
K so, this thread was buried when I posted here earlier, but I’m going to add my post here as well. Sorry for the double.
So, all of my guild mates that are PvEing are saying they have no latency issues, while I will sometimes see it brought up in sPvP map chat. On occasion, someone could be doing badly and blame lag sure but the amount of complaints I’m seeing from others is starting to pile up.
I, myself, have been kicked to character select from 5 sPvP matches so far today. Two just recently within the same 30 minute time frame. This makes it nearly impossible to test builds or even earn exp. First thought was maybe it’s just peak server time (five hours ago) so I take a break and go do other things. Come back and get the same issues. In PvE I did a story quest and a couple hearts with no issues; during my break I even watched a couple tv shows online and a few videos on youtube—other than a couple slow load times that lasted maybe 5-10 seconds before picking back up, nothing seemed to be bogged down. Now with this in mind I want to blame the servers HOWEVER I’m getting roflstomped by other players who don’t seem to be lagging at all seeing as how I go from full hp to downed by the time I recover from the spikes.
So, I’m just curious to know if anyone else is experiencing this and if not what could possibly be causing me to get kicked out of the game so frequently?
Note that I’m not downloading in the background, I’m not loading any movies/videos/etc. or doing anything differently that I did yesterday when I had zero issues.
Before I go any further, let me say, I really love the game. But…
Since the last big patch I’m experiencing terrible lags and disconnects during “primetime” which means after 7 pm German timezone. These lags are twofold, first there are those lags that are related to dragon events and wvw zergs. Don’t mind them, as I’m not farming dragons and not a big wvw fan.
The other lags I do mind…it’s not possible to do dungeons or fractals with my guild mates. There are delays to the skills up to 20 sec and then it’s bang…and I’m dead. Or I get dc’ed.
I ran pingplotter and there seems to be a bottleneck at level 3 in Frankfurt.
We had the same problems back in September, but I could move my account to an American server, which solved the problem. Now I can’t simply move my account anymore, without paying, which I simply don’t want to, as you can imagine.
I’m really sad to say, but I’m not going to play a game that’s simply not playable for a big number of people in Europe (if you EVER look at the German forums you will see, that’s the case https://forum-de.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Laggs-und-Disconnects-Telekom-Kunden , https://forum-de.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/tech/Lag-Probleme-Sammelthread ). I know my post will not change one thing, but It’s good for me to get it out of my systems….
