PC setup help
It’ll do high graphics settings. Be sure to check that your power supply unit will be able to outpit the needed power for the new GPU.
Hello everyone,
I have an i5 2300 2.8ghz cpu and an ati radeon HD 5450 and running on 20 fps with low/medium settings. Oh and I have 4gigs of RAM
Now I want to upgrade my graphics card, probably to gtx geforce 650. Will it be able to handle gw2 on medium/high with a decent fps or am I expecting too much since my cpu is not all that.
Thanks in advance!
I’m not sure what resolution you play at, but for comparison, my siblings play on an old C2D @ 2.0 Ghz (the bare minimum) with a GTX 650Ti. They play at a resolution of 1600 by 900 with a second monitor also attached that doesn’t play the game at a resolution of 1024 by 768. They play on a mix of medium and high settings and get about 30 FPS in LA, more if you’re outside town in Gendarran Fields. However, in WvW and large dynamic events their FPS suffers because of the old and slow processor, so you can expect that as well just not nearly as much as them. Just set the WvW character detail to lowest and the culling setting to whatever you prefer or can handle. Their CPU is the bottleneck in most situations now, but since you have a faster processor and a quad core, you’ll see less CPU bottle necking than they do.
As it was said above, make sure your power supply have enough power to power the card since the HD 5450 used around 20W and a GTX 650 uses around 65W.

For the same price of a 650Ti or even 650, you can get a 560Ti used and have close to twice the GPU power. It is almost always better to go with a mid to highend card from the last gen than a low end card from the new(er) gen.

Ahah, no that’s not true. 650 TI and 560TI are pretty even now and I think it’d be safe to say the 650 TI BOOST beats the 560TI because Kepler is amaaaaaaaaaazing

The highest end 650Ti “boost” models are still 12% behind the 560Ti base model. And yet the 560Ti can be had for the price of the 650, the 650Ti SC/BOOST etc models are about twice the price of what you can find a 560Ti for, and many of those are the SC 560Ti’s. So yes, the 560Ti beats the 650 really bad in everyway and also beats the 650Ti BOOST models.

Then I can pose to you that then OP would have to buy a more powerful powersupply unit to support the GPU, if OP needs to buy one anyway. I think he should just get the most without spending as much as possible and just get a 650 or a 650TI and a power supply if needed.

Most OEM units have almost no amperage on the 12v rail and almost everything on the 5v rail, we would not know unless the OP listed his PSU or it’s ratings. However it could be possible he might be able to get away with it, it depends on if he bought it with the GPU to start with, sometimes the OEM will use a PSU with a few extra amps on the 12v rail then. However, even still, for the price of the 650Ti boost he could get a 560Ti and a good PSU which would also support future upgrades and could be moved into a new computer if he ever bought/built another.
