Okay I have been cruising around in WvW lately and having good/bad times.. Died my few share and ive killed my few share. However I can’t help but notice every now and again there are guardian groups running around. Ok I am bracing for death I get hit.. ONCE, read this very carefully so you fully understand.. ONCE.. one skill. The scepter aoe skill. It is dropped on me and I am dead. 25k hp -0 in under a second. I come back and the guy is gone.

Just his other guards around. They come for me and I try to run they catch me. I turn around and am duking it out. Ok they are clearly not damage specced because I am just not taking damage at all. However I hit one of them with everything I had….I don’t need to be damage specced to make a dent in a guardian with a warrior full bar burndown on someone. He was KD’d and I did it again. His hp never moved. At all. I apply burn/bleed/torment. All gone instantly. I cannot do anything to this guy.

His buddy comes along and one shots me again with scepter aoe.

Is this some new godmode build or is it a cheating group? I can name names or video but Anet will try to remove the post.

Seems legit to me. Guardians have access to a lot of condi removals and regen. When specced/geared correctly scepter does do a lot of damage. Your gear could use some work though.

A lot of weird stuff happening this week… It might be explaind with lag package loss etc.
games like this have insanely comlicated timeing if something is amiss there weird stuff will happen. I noticed some strange changes to movment and "cast"speed on some people this week includeing myself one time I was under the effect of some kind off permanent haste (also haste is not available in my build) and everything happened 2x as fast as usual.
I met a ranger who used rapid fire 3x in a row, my log was filled with like 20 hits while I spammed sb evades which did nothing to avoid damage. Probably a serious time stamp problem due to server lag.
There are some players whenever I hit them my game crashes, it might be the lag…

But it also could be a cheat.

Weird stuff happening indeed. It is common to fight against down people permanently invulnerable for all the duration they are down and healing, against people always out of combat who move, heal downed players light speed fast, and teleport to way points when they feel like.
Lately also during one on one when I have downed a guardian they are somehow invulnerable to blind? As a thief I CnD and stealth to blind the player before I stomp. some guardians are invulnerable to this, no mater how many times I do it.

Did you actually check the combat log?

Scepter doing 25K damage seems quite extreme, especially in WvW. Dungeon group, full dps spec, full debuffs/buffs and everything against a single low toughness target maybe I could believe such a number… But not in WvW. That’s just not doable to my knowledge, but granted it was a while since I played Guardian.

Guardians/Warriors taking barely any damage at all even from dps specced players is normal, so that’s nothing strange. But of course, they can rarely kill said dps specced players in turn unless they are really bad players (if they are good players they should know when to say “meh kitten this fight” and leave)

I’ve experienced something similar, a thief killed me in a second, it was very strange since i didn’t saw any high damages popping over my head, I checked the combat log and realised the fight was way longer than 1 second, I think its spike lag.

It was probably focus AoE rather than scepter one, boosted by dmg modifiers (~25-30%), vulnerability stacking and dps gear. 25k tick from scepter 2 is not believable.

Hard to tell anyway without any screens/video. One of best ways to deconstruct a fight is having it recorded. Use ShadowPlay people, it is no-brainer to setup pre-recording if you use nVIDIA GPU.

Still dont really see that kind of damage being pumped out. Even assuming 250% crit damage (which would be 200% in the stats), that’s 10K non-crit damage in a single attack. I dont know any kind of weapon that can do that even on zero toughness targets. Maybe a fully traited superior ballista O.o

The only reasonable explanation is a combo attack probably consisting of 5+ sources of damage. But the OP says single attack…

well to be honest smite has the highest damage in game currently so if you couple that with the other 2 mentioned guards it makes sense the dps guard was running berserker while the other 2 was bunker Boon guards wich probably used Empower slapping instant 25 might stack

like name me any skill in the game with a scaling from power of 4.9 other classes have about 1.5 scaling tops

It could be a cheat but more likely it is the crappy combat log messing you up. Spike damage often gets lumped together as one hit in the combat log. I don’t know enough about Guardian spike damage to comment as to how he/she did it but I am guessing you got dropped by several big hits. Do you remember what it said in the Combat log?

Well a good WvW group (This work for zerg or small roaming party.), will have a defensive build frontline and a dps build backline. The goal is for the Frontline to absord the damage while the dps backline kill the ennemies. Sound to me that you tried to kill a full defensive Frontliners while his DPS backliners killed you fast. Now about the one shot kill with the scepter i don’t know. Its hard to say if yes of no it was a hack or something legit. I saw some really good group that work together in an impressive way. If someone gave fury to the group and two gardian pop their Empower staff then the group can burst you down with 25 might in a second. Also how can you be sure only the scepter hit you? They could had burst you down and the only thing you saw was the guardian scepter rings under your feet.

For the guys that you couldn’t do anything to him. Again this can be explain easily. As a guardian i have 1 aegis already on me, then pop a second aegis from retreat, then my focus block, then a 3rd aegis from my virtues, then a blind from my virtues and then my elite invulnerability that reset my virtues so 1 more blind and 1 more aegis. This can give me a really long time during which you just can’t hit at all. He can even use his heal that block and if he is in a good group, the other can keep him alive with some heal. Leaving you with the feeling that you did absolutely no damage and got 1 shot. A good organized group can smash through a lot.

If my math is correct, in ideal conditions (25might, 25vuln etc) and 250% crit dmg SoW can do even more than 25k against targets with 3200 armor.

To my knowledge no combinations of skills can AoE that much damage. Single target maybe under the right circumstances. About the strongest I have seen is a Meteor Shower. Technically Hundred Blades could do it but nothing on a guardian has that much AoE damage. If that happened in front of me, I would assume giant cheater applies unless we are talking about 3 uplevels.

The above build was thrown together just to illustrate that a 1 trick pony can be made with a guardian and if all the planets are aligned, they can deal out ridiculous damage.

Take into account:

+10% Damage for scepter.
+10% Due to JI setting target on fire.
+10% Due to being above 90% health.
+10% Damage at night time.
+20% Damage for being under effect of Aegis.

Imagine 12 stacks of might from staff pre buffing and 3 more from using virtue of justice + 25 stacks of bloodlust. Since this is wvwvw imagine also having 100 power from Guard Leech. Don’t forget 129% damage for crits (FoodCrit Damage) at 62%% chance (Meditation gives fury + Guard leech precision).

I’m probably missing some possible variables and am probably unoptimized fully, but there you go.

Not saying it wasn’t a cheat as it’s described rather odd and without any proof. But do know that it’s quite possible to deal a lot of damage with smite.

Scepter AoE #2 is one of the easiest skills to dodge in the game, even though it is high damage. Operator Error.

Nah 3 level 80’s, most likely zerker zerglings but like I said, I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it for myself

If you can post your combat log, and a screenshot of your characters stats, build, skills, it may shed some light on the situation. Otherwise it is almost impossible to determine.

Try jumping into a 20 man zerg, die and check your combat log. You will notice that the dmg don’t add up (considered that you die within 1-2sec, condition dmg don’t matter). So combat log don’t really show the real picture.

Also note that combat log does not show second. So against anyone who use speed hack (combat hack) , you won’t see any different. A thief(cheater) can do 20 attack in 1 sec will have the combat log telling you the same 20 attack happen(will show only 10+hit ) in ONE minute and not 1 sec.
Most “honest” people (who believe the world is full of rainbow and sunshine) will tell u it is lag even when you post video but don’t kid yourself , goggle it and you will know the real picture.

I seem to remember running the numbers once – if traited for, and given every buff in the game the scepter has a theoretical max damage of about 75k against a 2600 armoured target if all the projectiles strike (vary rare).

As a comparison the GS skill Whirling Wrath can hit for about 56k in the same setup.

Of course, you actually have to stand still in the circle for several seconds in order to get clobbered, so as other’s have commented you may have had an unlucky lag spike.

Totally anecdotal, but I was dueling a guardian for about five minutes with neither of gaining much ground (I’m a warrior). Suddenly, he drops from 80% to downed in a split second — no other players, no environmental damage. It was really quite odd; I do run reflection on shield, so it could have been that? No clue, spooky weird.

or maybe multiboxing. 5-6 people hit u all at the exact same second. 0 health left
