The mats will absolutely drop in WvW. In addition, generally speaking, we are putting a heavier emphasis on finding long-term solutions to redressing the reward imbalance between PvE and WvW. I can’t claim they will ever be 100% equal all the time, but we would like it to never be the case that you are choosing between playing WvW and getting good rewards. The two should be one in the same.

Upgrade the rank chests to include one guaranteed rare like world boss chests, and hook us up with dungeon tokens from rank/champion chests and random drops so we can get our cool-looking armor and legendaries without grinding PvE content. Or at least let us buy tokens with badges of honor if that’s easier to implement. That’d be a good start.

Then add some more cool finishers to the gem store so we have something to throw money at.

The one thing you do have to remember about legendary items is that they require map completion. Map completion requires a trip to WvW. And if you don’t have the capability to travel in a group to the vistas and PoIs, you’re either going to have to get out there on your own and risk PvP or wait until your server has everything…which could be a long time.

The weight of legendaries is heavily PvE, yes, but they are by no means able to be obtained exclusively in PvE. Therefore, you cannot expect legendaries to be obtainable by playing exclusively in WvW.

And if you’re going to talk about buying them from the trade post, well you make gold in WvW too; so that’s a moot point.

The PvE crowd complained about having to obtain map completion in WvW, so the devs responded by randomizing team colors (despite the different-colored areas having certain significant tactical advantages/disadvantages in EB designed to help balance the fight) as well as semi-randomizing matchups (increasingly the likelihood each server will face opponents they can either steamroll or at least be able to conquer portions of the map). That makes WvW map completion far easier to obtain for just about any server (Vabbi and FoW might still have it rough).

And the amount of gold you can earn in WvW, while somewhat better than it used to be, is easily off-set by the gear, food buffs, siege costs, and structural upgrades needed to remain competitive in that very same game mode. At this point in time, we earn the least amount of gold while playing in the biggest gold sink in the game.

All we want is some sort of balance so we can also feel rewarded for the countless hours we put into our preferred game mode.

I couldn’t care less about a legendary – its cool its there and its a goal for people to work with, but is not for me. And I do believe it should require doing all parts of the game – PvE and PvP.. its a ‘legendary’ weapon after all.

What I’m really disappointed is with the introduction of power creep even more (sure, its small, but still there) – at launch and before the game was sold on the idea of no stat grind, but all based on skins. I was highly disappointed with the introduction of ascended trinkets and now this…

I stop playing other games because of it, I liked the idea of GW (GW1 included) of being able to play and be competitive without gear grind. Thanks Anet.

It’s been a year and yet you haven’t balanced anything. We still have only TWO www maps, we still have insane skill lag, we still have green drop from chests/blue-white from any other sources. I would fire you if i were your boss.

Purely from badges, no. We will be getting Ascended back items into WvW and accessories are already there. We’ve been focused on the Ascended items more generally and not specifically in WvW right now. However, we will make sure WvW is at parity with the rest of the game in terms of Ascended gear.

While I appreciate the answer from Devon Carter that these things are coming to WvW, the question still remains “why aren’t they already there?”. How much coding is needed add a few items to a vendor? And what’s wrong with Badges only?

What exactly do we acquire in WvW? It’s seriously frustrating that Anet just gave away a metric kittenton of badges to every player in the game, but we WvW players still can’t get Ascended back pieces or accessories with those badges. What else do we really have?

The weird thing Devon is that there appears to be a disconnect at Anet between the people in direct contact with the player community and the people who make reward balance decisions. I hate to keep bringing this up, but I was pretty vocal about a statement Colin made about WEXP reward chests and “a lot more ectos”. As we’ve seen, his statement was a marathon length away from reality. I’ve literally created 10 times more ectos from a bit of PVE since Champ chests were introduced than the same or larger time investment in WvW. It’s as if Colin expected it to be like that, but someone else didn’t.

Hopefully this does get corrected sooner rather than later. I’ve personally seen WvW participation take a hit recently (myself included for a variety of reasons) due largely to the August PVE content and players not wanting miss the gold rush.

That’s actually the best news I have heard since I started doing WvW. Just hope a solution can be found sooner rather than later. I’m seeing more and more hardcore and talented WvW players quit every day. Especially after the last 2 living story updates being so fruit full to the PVE population on my server.

You know, reading this thread and the one about ascended/legendary weapons I’ve realized why there’s so much discontent and vitriol on these WvW forums. Its not just that there are certain things in WvW that we wish were changed or think need fixed or added. Its that the situation causes the most basest of human emotions to come out. Arguably the most powerful human emotion – and the most dangerous.

Jealousy.

We are befit by jealousy towards what the PvE side of the game gets. They get more loot, more updates, better and easier access to high end armor/weapons, etc. etc. etc.

Maybe we should stop comparing what WvW has to what PvE has. Now I’m not saying to stop making suggestions for improvment. But if we can recognize this perhaps we can stop being jealous of PvE and perhaps the rage will diminish.

There are two amazing aspects to this game, and one is lacking right now. The devs don’t have to choose one over the other if they just use both to play off each other.

WvW actually has the easiest access to armor/weapons in the game.

5g + some meaningless sum of badges = armor set (admittedly two of the standard sets are missing), and 1g + 200 badges for a weapon. PvE has to grind 1200+ badges for a set in dungeon gear (an additional 300+ for a weapon) or 30g+ in terms of materials to create a set of desirable crafted gear.

PvE currently has a monopoly on trinkets, is the issue, with backpieces being exclusive and everything but the amulet (this one is WvW cheaper) being achievable in PvE for less than 30+ laurels.

The sum of badges is only meaningless to people that wvw a lot. People wvw a lot because it’s fun. If someone in PvE does dungeons a lot because it’s fun they will also have a surplus of tokens for gear.

Difference is, while mr PvE enjoys his time in dungeons he is getting 1g+ per run. Mr wvw gets blues greens and spikes if he is lucky.

They can’t balance WvW around every possible denominator. If they balanced around low tiers or stomped match-ups, T1 (where I am) would have tens of thousands of badges rather than thousands per person.

Our small NA runs with at most ten people but usually only five, never in the zerg, always facing a zerg, and we do fine with 100+ badges a night just from roaming, flipping camps, and flipping towers. I understand that the dynamics in lower tiers are different but just think about, compared to what we get being small force, the zergs in T1 must get in a night. When we run with Smokee during EU/NA, many of us end up with several hundreds of badges and readily filled bags.

How do you bring balance to this between the tiers?

With the increase in WXP that would be overkill, but throw in one guaranteed rare+ every 5 levels, or at whatever level your actual “rank” increases would be cool, and make it retroactive, ploxorz!!

That would be a great step towards maxing out “play as you like”. Make it 10Boh per token, maybe scale with difficulty, though don’t go overboard, since dungeons still throw gold at you for running them.

Why can’t we get the same chest we’re getting from champs by killing a player? I don’t want to receive grey trophies that do absolutely nothing but waste my inventory space…

I’d like to think I don’t really have to answer that one…

lol, i don’t think he means literally give champ chests from players. i think he means “make the bags of loot that players drop an item that can be stacked and opened later, like champ chests”, which would make inventory management on WvW heaven. you’d have player chests and NPC chests (as well as champ chests from lords). regular enemies would presumably stay the same, given their loot tables are probably reused from PvE.

No…if you read his post, he’s pretty much asking for champ loot bags. Those “trophies” he’s talking about already stack and so do the heavy loot bags. And now the badges go in your account wallet so those aren’t even an issue anymore.

It may be nice to see a ‘player’ loot bag made for WvW, but then would you get sellable loot bags from them or just loot? You’d have to make one for each ‘tier’ of player level you currently receive loot from, so you definitely wouldn’t be stacking only one ‘player’ loot bag.

And then how would players take to losing their magic find in WvW? You don’t get MF when opening bags, but you do get it when killing players. If all players dropped were ‘player’ loot bags, your MF would be nearly useless in WvW. Don’t tell me people wouldn’t start flame threads over that, they absolutely would.

The issue is a lot more delicate than people would like give thought to.

what i meant is a bag with something inside that could be worth your time. Why do i get trophies, blues or even nothing from killing a player? Give me a ‘downgraded’ champ bag in which there’s at least a green guaranteed and chances of getting exotics. Its a player you’re killing not a pve moos lol

Devon, is it really fair to say accessories are available in WvW? The cost is 40 laurels and 50 ectos, which is the same as in PvE for any player who doesn’t/cannot run guild missions.

It takes a month of doing your daily and monthly to get enough laurels for that. 40 ecto’s is around 55-60 rares, I am only on a mid tier server so don’t know about higher tiers, but I certainly do not get 55 rares drop quickly. There isn’t a WVW way to get accessories, there isn’t a way to purchase these based on achievements or skill in wvw, it’s just a PVE solution tacked on. Why does it need 40 laurels anyway? That’s an entire months laurels for a single accessory… for a single character… for a single stat combination. Obsessive gating much?

On that note, can we also point out the imbalance in getting rings from wvw? They cost 25 laurels and 250 badges – meaning you can only get 2 per month or so. Doing fractals, pve content, you can get one every 10 days from a single fractal run (even quicker if you do more dailies) without having to spend laurels – how is this balanced compared to wvw?

As a WVW player, it feels like the development team really do not care about making a fair situation for WVW players, especially with new gear tiers. It took so long to even get ascended gear in wvw, and that was even more time gated than pve! You may believe differently as a developer – I am merely echoing my own thoughts and what I hear repeated time and time again in game.

Why not add another currency for wvw (yes, yet another….) in which it is only awarded 1 per wvw rank (currency is account bound). This replaces laurels for the cost, so you could get an ascended ring every 20 ranks or something. Wouldn’t that be much more fair and exclusive for WvW players? That way you could specifically balence rewards on WVW activity/contribution without having to worry about daily/pve gating…

Maybe use the opportunity to slightly make roaming more equal to zerging economically.
Yes it should never be the case that one who kills e.g. 10 players and caps a couple camps and hours gets the exact same loot or WXP and someone who kills a hundred and caps a couple towers, but it shouldn’t be whole orders of magnitudes less profitable either.
A way would be to make enemies that lived longer, in addition to more XP, drop gradually better loot too, which however wouldn’t be the case any longer if there are XX players in the vicinity (i.e. the drop rate within zergs would be unchanged).
That would reward roaming soloists/small groups who kill supposedly dangerous enemy soloists/small groups.

I can get 3-5g per hour in pve (Clockwork Chaos), OR I can get 3-5g per night (~4hrs) playing wvw. You have a long way to go.

New more powerful gear will probably bring to wvw:
- unbalance between classes (there probably will be classes that get in a certain gear to overpowered )
- easier to pewpew the gates down faster, without siege
- harder(or impossible) to be killed by siege.

Can still remember the effect of the new weapons one of the DAOC expensions brought to the game.. with increase casting speed etc..
Able to insta kill people.
Why? DAOC wanted to improve their PVE content..
And PVE means new more powerful stuff to farm every few months..
Making PVP / WVW unbalanced 90% of the time

Thats why i always said. You cant mix a WvW game with a PvE game (or you have to split it up like SPVP)

The mats will absolutely drop in WvW. In addition, generally speaking, we are putting a heavier emphasis on finding long-term solutions to redressing the reward imbalance between PvE and WvW. I can’t claim they will ever be 100% equal all the time, but we would like it to never be the case that you are choosing between playing WvW and getting good rewards. The two should be one in the same.

Upgrade the rank chests to include one guaranteed rare like world boss chests, and hook us up with dungeon tokens from rank/champion chests and random drops so we can get our cool-looking armor and legendaries without grinding PvE content. Or at least let us buy tokens with badges of honor if that’s easier to implement. That’d be a good start.

Then add some more cool finishers to the gem store so we have something to throw money at.

Again, we haven’t made any decisions, but this is very much an avenue I’d like us to travel down.

Just be careful with the cliff.

You nerfed again the rewards in WWW (badges are one evidence) and came here to talk about balance?

I can get 3-5g per hour in pve (Clockwork Chaos), OR I can get 3-5g per night (~4hrs) playing wvw. You have a long way to go.

Please, read this again just before next developer meeting. We all have jobs, wives, etc. I dont want to farm PvE to gear up my chars. I prefer to spend my time roaming borderlands coz at the very begining everybody told me GW2 would not be like LOTRO. You could play both pvp or pve, have fun and gear up your chars by different ways. You would not be forced to do raids/dungeons coz this GW2 is a fresh MMO.

If you want specific outfit for you axe you have to go to that specific dungeon, ok, perfect. But if you dont mind about pixels you can craft, buy, farm dungeons, wvw… That is nice. And buy different outfits for your armor with wvw badges is awesom. But, how about ascended weapons? Will we be able to get new best weapons by different and balanced ways?

I want to keep beliving Anet.

not to mention, 3-5g per evening is when you are able to run with the zerg, there is opposition and you take some towers, keeps etc., and you don’t upgrade anything. A very long way to go indeed

why can’t you add ascended in pve and wvwvw at the same time? i don’t understand… you can take all the time you want to do this but once you add an item you add it everywhere… i don’t think this is difficult, we waited half year to get laurel merchant in wvwvw… half year… and we’re close to a year without ascended back obtainable in wvwv…

I have no opinion on the www vs pve side of the discussion. What I do have an opinion on however is the fact that between just the two characters I’m playing in www, I’m looking at getting 8-10 ascended weaps.

Not sure I can muster the will for that. Or the $$. Cause let’s face it, that’s the real reason behind this power creep business. Getting people to spend cash for gold.
Nothing wrong with that per se, and nothing wrong with people enjoying the farming aspect. Just ain’t for me. Brings me right back to WoW and the eternal grind.

Not sure I can be bothered come patch time. Maybe take a couple of months break, and see where things land eventually.

One change I would really like to see is that we stop getting tiny lower level items, tiny loot bags, etc. from killing upscaled. I have no control over who decides to join in WvW and I don’t find it very fair that I’m given lower level loot because of some one else’s decision.

If I go into a lower level zone I still get gear for my own level despite the content being easier than a higher zone. Please make this the same for killing upscaled in WvW as well.

Actually the loot bags you get never scale with your own level, only the items. Also, scaling for item levels is not always 100%. If I kill a level 32 mob with my level 80 I can get an item ranging from level 32 (ish) to level 80.

Don’t see any reason it should work differently in WvW. Those upscaled players are as much speedbumps as those 32 level mobs are with your (downscaled) level 80.

If you could tell this to the PvP Dev Team, we would love you so much over there in the PvP forum.

Because currently, it’s not about reward-imbalance, but about rewards don’t exist. We are already excluded from every kind of update, and we can’t even get the LS skins from PvP, nor can make gold to buy them. But the biggest problem is we make 0 gold.

This hits the nail pretty good. I work long hours, most often 6-7 days a week, I am lucky to get an hour a day to play, so why should I be forced to play PvE for that short time to be able to buy anything? It has been a year with this imbalance and it has gotten worse, over this time it puts WvW players at a even bigger disadvantage, I have watched prices on items skyrocket because of inflation, but that inflation is for everyone, not just PvE players, it has gotten to the point with inflation that even a stack of food is out of reach if you don’t PvE. I did some PvE to make a few gold, I racked up more gold in a single night than I did in a month of WvW, if you guys can not understand how unacceptable that is for a game that used “play how you want” as a selling point, then you need to go get an honest job doing something else. Because it boils down to bait and switch.

That’s true about the bags… but you chose to go to that low area, I have no say if some one else wants to join in WvW at whatever level. That’s a big difference.

Untrue about the level 32 mobs Vs. a level 32 player as well. I’ve wrecked with my characters before they hit 80. I just generally focused on CC/conditions instead of direct damage. Roots, pulls, wardings, fear, chill, cripple, etc. still work just as well to set up people to be killed. Just a single pull will probably kill you as the rest of the group jumps all over you. I could also go man siege. It’s hardly the same as a level 32 mob unless the player behind it is as bad as a level 32 mob.

Also you get the illusion that you have more money, but nowdays the money in this game is cheap, so you are no more rich than before. Btw, the money will be cheaper next year.

I would like to remember that this game, IMO has 4 games inside: sPvP, WvW, dungeons and open-world PvE. It seems like 80% of developing is focused on the last one. So, should sPvP, dungeon and WvW players go and play open-world events to earn money in order to play what they want to play after?

I understand the gemstore moves on the Anet machine, but now I’m talking about how actual players feel about new updates. Are we loosing interest coz Anet don’t mind (enough) about balance btwen parts/games of GW2? What about essence of these last and next updates focused in open-world PvE?

Inflation is common in any fiat money system, yes. However, just like in real world systems, when the created money is given to a set of people first they are the ones who see the largest gains and it causes the people who do not get it to be even worse off. It is just like today’s banking system, where money is loaned out from fractional reserve banking (inflation) and given to very well off companies/people, all it serves to do is make them more well off because they spend it at market value and not at the inflated value it will make the market into. So, those in WvW have not just the problem of being able to make money as easy, but are also surfing the second hand problem of the inflation of the market.

How can you say the way you are implementing it into WvW is even close to on par with the pve method of getting them. Just to obtain ONE earring from WvW’ing it takes a MONTH worth of dailies/monthly. ONE ITEM a MONTH.. In a month a PVE player will have a FULL SET. WTF How is this even close to “on par” or fair..

I have 6 characters I like to WvW with all of them, each one of them uses 4-5 gear sets as I don’t want to play the same build all the time.. Already I am at a disadvantage from the Ascended accessories since I can’t stand the PVE in this game. Now you are adding Ascended weapons and not only that buffing all the Legendaries all the PVE players bring into WvW making me at even more disadvantage..

I sure hope your statement here means you are going to change the implementation of gaining Ascended for pure WvW players to remain competitive. As of now 40 laurels + 50 ectos as a cost for one ring to a WvW player is a huge slap in the face and beyond unfair.

I’m glad to hear that an avenue to attain Ascended back items through WvW play will be added, but it’s worth noting that such an avenue does not exist for accessories yet either. Amulets and rings have a substantial portion of their respective laurel costs replaced with badges. This implementation is surely appreciated but it is worth noting that accessories were excluded; their cost when purchased from a WvW merchant is identical to the cost from a PvE merchant. No portion of the cost for an Ascended accessory is replaced with WvW currencies.

I greatly appreciate the increased attention that WvW has been receiving but I feel compelled to nitpick this point.

I greatly appreciate the increased attention that WvW has been receiving but I feel compelled to nitpick this point.

It’s not nitpicking, it’s frustration. I don’t see too many globs of ecto dropping in WvW, but that’s how we get accessories. Badges are ignored completely, but what else do we earn?

I’m sorry but that is a horrible fan-boy remark, and a poor one at that.

As for what you said prior I cannot really agree with you. There are some very seroius issues with this game and they in fact have been ignored by the developers since Open BETA. Most gaming developers would have addressed those issues long ago and polished the game in several ways — none of those have happened to GW2. There is claim of polish in patch notes but I have not seen any of that with my own eyes.

ArenaNet is being fueled and powered by NCsoft, and trust me we all know how NCsoft operates: build it, sell it and walk away from it. NCsoft is by no means a company that stands behind their games. AION is a huge proof of that and today that game still lacks what it should have been.

Game companies are under pressure and deadlines. When that becomes the company’s focal point the game polishing, bug fixes and performance fixes become the last, if ever, factor of the game. GW2 is no exception and has in fact shown the exact same model NCsoft lives by.

Sadly the teams formed up to release content every two weeks has made other areas of the game suffer tremendously. I play a Thief that has a skill bug that they still have yet to figure out and patch — and that’s just one area. I have lost a lot of interest in the game over the past 3 months due to this decision making within the company.

I have often said while playing this game: How, how can this game be so beautiful, have so much eye appeal and lack the true love behind the true development of the game? It seems the bricks fell into place, but no one ever used cement to seal them together.

GW2 Lacks Development in these areas:

  • Game Performance
  • Implementing Anti-Cheat System <— THIS should be Priority 1!
  • Bug Fixes
  • More Creative Items to Buy in Gem Store (boy this will get their attention)
  • Class Balancing
  • Listening to the GW2 Community

If the above doesn’t change rapidly and with great attention by the company, then this game will remain under 4 Million copies sold. In today’s market, that’s not necessarily a surviving product for future gamer endeavors.

I am one of the few remaining S/P Thieves in this game. In fact I have played this spec since the game came out, I simply fell in love with it. The problem is the players that choose to put on a Dagger get the love from the developers. They have far more special abilities to run off with than a S/P Thief does. (yet for some reason they nerfed one of the MAIN survival abilities for a S/P Thief ‘and’ did not fix the bug along with it)

Because S/P Thief is THE least played setup in the game, the developers pay zero attention to it.

What’s popular gets love, what isn’t gets thrown away.

… a few month down the road ofc the priority is equipping the PVE players and force WvW players to do PvE to get there gear, when the Ascended gear arrives in WvWvW we will all have them already just like it happened with the jewelry.
