Boo, boo, it’s Mary Sue.
Let her rot. What can we do?

Burn the fields and salt the Earth.
Let all know what she is worth.

Until she lies in a shallow grave
no path to mirth will she pave.

Scarlet is the BEST villain in GW2

Drakkon.4782

Besides, from the Scarlet short story, I see a huge difference. The Joker “just wants to watch the world burn” and Harley just wants to please him. Scarlet wants to burn the world and have a hand in recreating it. She is not crazy, she is enlightened. Still that is not a motive, just a frame of mind. Her motive is fueled by pure evil, self importance, and a paranoia that if she does not do this, then she doesn’t matter. To her, it seems like everyone lives and dies and the world is still how it is supposed to be, and she doesn’t like that. Crazy? No, she knows what she’s doing, and she is smart enough to know how we perceive right and wrong, but she just doesn’t care. Evil.

She’s a narcissistic, psychopathic sociopath. She’s self-absorbed, self-important, incapable of empathizing with others, and she hates what everyone else is doing and refuses to try and fit in. Instead, because of her narcissism, she wants to make everyone love her and do things her way. She’s bullied and threatened the Aetherblades into conforming to her will (“Have you met my Aetherbaldes? They work for me because… they like living.”), and when she gets defeated at the Jubilee, she sends mailbombs to the players.

While she is one of the most unbalanced characters to ever have been kittened out of someone’s fevered imagination in forever, she isn’t enlightened. She’s too self-absorbed to ever be enlightened. She cannot even conceive of what true enlightenment is because it isn’t her, and if it isn’t her, she doesn’t care.

And then there’s her “back story”. I put it in quotes because it’s the sort of thing that I was writing when I was 6. She’s applied to and been accepted by all 3 colleges of the Asura. What? No Asura has ever done that, so why would the racially stuck up and self-important Asura allow a walking salad to do it? She’s a blacksmith, but quit because it was too easy. In what universe? Smithing is hard work and leave very little time for anything else. She’s the Six’s answer to everything you’ll ever need. Blindly fall to your knees and worship her.

Excuse me, I’m actually becoming physically ill thinking about how poorly written and implemented she is.

Scarlet isn’t the best villian ever. She’s the worse plot device ever contrived. She’s the laziest type of writing there is. Evil isn’t monolithic, and yet she’s quickly making every evil faction in GW2 fall under her sway. What’s next for her? Dominating the Elder Dragons? The Inquest is secretly working for her all this time and they would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling players? Grand conspiracies don’t all tie up neatly under one little bow. They’re big messy self-conflicting affairs. They have lots of heads and lots of agendas, and none of them get along with one another for too long.

This isn’t normal, but on Scarlet Briar it is. Scarlet. Not even once.

Oh, look. Kitten thinks he’s funny.

Let me see if I got this right?

Did you hear about the Iron Legion Engineer who was looking for a better energy source? He bolted a piece of buttered toast to the back of his warbandmate and threw him off the side of the Black Citadel. The results were quite effective.

Kitty’s whiskers would make decent floss, if one ignores that mouth they were recently attached to.

It amazes me how much Charr yell. With four ears, they shouldn’t have to be so loud.

The horns mystify me. They must be for butting their heads against brick walls, because they keep reaching so many dead ends.

I keep wondering why I can’t skin the Charr I beat in WvW. Not a big loss, as most of their pelts aren’t worth a lot.

Take your pick, I’ve got more.

Problem with the Two-Week Release Schedule

in Living World

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

I’ve given if a couple cycles and I can now firmly say that I have a problem with the two-week cycle. It’s too fast. No one is out in the world anymore, running the Group Events, securing the Temples, etc. Obviously, I’m NOT discussing the sPvP and WvW segments. This is strictly about PvE, so please confine any comments to that arena.

This problem seems to be a problem mainly for alts, new players, and people who are completing the map to 100%. I was in Orr last week, and there were 4-6 of us in the zone, total. There couldn’t have been more than 20 people in all three of the zones on Orr. And nothing in Orr is really soloable, because the normal mobs re-pop so fast, the mob density is quite high, and most of the Veterans pat through areas where their two adds aren’t the only ones you’ll have to take on. So soloing isn’t an option, and for those of us in small guilds, who just like to solo, or are taking ANet up on the promise that the game was completely soloable, that’s a problem.

Yes, one could join a larger guild, but that doesn’t fix the problem, it just changes the situation so that the parameters are different. It’s not the same thing.

Now, how is this tied to the sped up release schedule? Well, everyone heads to the new zones to do the content as fast as possible, and they stay there. This is problematic, because people would prefer to get the new achievements, particularly now that they have little bonuses tied to them. This is unfair. The extra week would help people by putting a buffer in that would prompt players who had completed the content in the Living World story to go back into the world, and others who could hold off until later would be able to be int eh world until they found more time to devote to the new stuff.

But two weeks isn’t enough time to get bored with the new content, and it isn’t long enough for some of us to digest it all. That’s a problem. All of it is related.

Just my thoughts.

Why do people stop playing GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

Top 3:

1: The most interesting race from GW brought into GW2 is being ignored. The Charr were implemented in a half-rumped manner, with clipping issues to their armor that persist to this day, floating shoulder, back and shield pieces that haven’t been fixed since they were pointed out in Beta, and stretched textures that make their armor look like a 5-year-old’s fridge drawing. The baddest enemies in GW demoted to an afterthought in GW2.

2: Scarlet. OMG, this one alone is reason enough to boycott the game. The single worst game-breaking feature has to be Villian-Sue Salad-Top. She’s destroyed more enjoyment in this game than any ganker I ever faced in PvP. Blow up all my bases, set up all my bombs, Scarlet is the single worst thing I have ever seen canonized into lore. I get physically ill every time she’s the anything behind a living story update.

3: Broken classes that the devs won’t even admit are broken. Turrets that die in 2-3 hits from trash, pets that can’t path and leash after a few feet, flamethrowers that can’t hit targets in front of them, dodging an attack and still taking full damage, AOE that doesn’t hit anything in its AOE. They just aren’t trying anymore. They got our money and they’re making a token effort to justify our continues interest in the game, but they won’t take the time to fix the problems that have plagued the game since Beta.

I haven’t played in three weeks. I don’t see playing in the next three weeks. Hell, if Scarlet is still in the game, I don’t see playing in the next three months. No more money from me in the Gem Store, and I advise everyone to do the same. Stop spending money in the gem store until the problems are fixed. Hit em in the pocket book.

Tequatl and conditions...

in Tequatl Rising

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

Conditions will be viable for the chunks where players have to defend against waves of mobs, especially as they’ll have to spread out.

There will always be mobs attacking the cannons, so condition users should focus on those to get the most out of their stats.

This is the answer to the problem, and the entire reason the OP will NEVER do it. He wants to go toe to toe with the boss like a zerker build DPSer, but he wants to do it as a CD build support. Basically, he’s trying to take a tossing flashbangs and wondering why the heavy machine gun is killing more people. He’s playing his character wrong.

There. I said it. We’re all thinking it. I’m going to call it out.

YOU’RE DOING IT WRONG!

CD is support, not DPS. Go help defend the cannons and batteries against the adds. You’re useless on the boss because all the zerkers with incidental conditions in their attacks are already using up all 25 stacks of whatever you inflict on the boss. Go do something useful to the raid. Or go play a zerker alt.

Pick one and quit whining about not being able to DPS as a support. Seriously, if you can’t add anything to the fight against the boss, go find a target you can add to. You’re still going to get rewarded for the encounter. Be useful to the event, or go away.

A-net dissapointed in lack of Charr

in Charr

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

Whenever they want to focus on the asura and charr models for armor or if they got time. They really need to have different armor sets for the asura and charr females. Regardless of their anatomy it should be a bit diverse between the two genders because every other race besides those 2 have different set armors for each gender. That’s their first step into versatility and then they can focus on armor clipping issues, animation and just plain better looking armors for the 2 races.

I disagree on the Charr front. The Charr don’t differentiate their genders like other races. There are few physical differences, no large blobs of clingy fat to work around, no real difference in leg mass, arm mass, or even head mass. Aside from a set or two of horns and lion-tuft vs all-fuzzy tail, there is little to set them apart, and the Charr reflect that in their armor. Both genders go to war, both can be heavy warriors or light casters, and everything in between, and so they present the most unified military front of any race in the game. They easily accomplish the goal of making all their soldiers look alike, which is the meaning of the word ‘uniform’. I don’t want, nor see a need for, any changes in armor based on gender.

Tony said it best: “Oh, my god, you’re a female! I honestly didn’t know. But I suppose that’s what we’ve been working towards, isn’t it? Now that I know, I honestly can’t stop looking at you. You have really well defined cheek bones.”

Of course, Vasquez and Hudson also seem to have the best exchange about it a decade and change earlier: “Hey, Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?” “No, have you?”

Of course, the very differences, or lack-thereof, that attract me to the Charr are probably the same things that are off-putting to a number of younger players who aren’t prepared to look at anything that doesn’t have huge bubbly breasts. I don’t know, as I can only speak for myself, and I like the Charr. I have three of them. And one of every other race. Had I the ability, I’d play a few more Asura, too. I like the little sociopathic egomaniacs.

Who would win in a fight, a Charr or Norn?

in Charr

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

I also play a charr engi and have been beat by an asura at one time or another. But I wouldn’t try to use that as a lore reason for the asura being stronger than the charr.

Seems you are, because, despite what you’re saying now, you’ve talked about things that violate established lore, and yet are supported by lore.

However, I’ve discovered several rules…

1: Norn tell stories. Most of them are BS. “Your Legend” is only as impressive as you make it sound.
2: Charr are OFFICIALLY larger than Norn, not the other way around. This has been stated several times by ANet. I can’t help it if they waffle about it because some author has a pro-Norn agenda and doesn’t want to adhere to canon.
3: Charr are all about battle, both personal and in units. Norn are not. Norn are about fighting and the hunt. They aren’t about combat so much as sparring and hunting. I wouldn’t take a hunter into a fight over a soldier. Ever. That’s common sense.

I respect your position regarding using the books as lore, but books are written by people who have a story to tell, and while I consider them canon, I don’t consider them reliable sources. Officially, I will always regard Charr as stronger because they are bred to be stronger, tougher, fiercer, quicker, and deadlier. That has been how they were originally described, written into the lore, and only later changed because it made for a more exciting story that someone wanted to sell as a book. Thus, respectfully, I will agree to disagree with you about our interpretations of our various sources on this subject.

  • - “Officially” comes from an image generated by ANet, posted on GW2Guru when GW2 was just launched. This is why I state that there have been changes to the lore which differentiates the official lore from the canon lore.

Honestly, I don’t care about killing him so long as I get my 9 achievements for the meta and my wings. But it is annoying that they’re making events that can’t be beaten by the general populous. I know that we’re supposed to learn the mechanics, but honestly, the events aren’t going to be learned by PUGs. Stuff like this should be reserved for instanced events, not open world zerging.

My only 80 is a strictly support character, so I can’t DPS on the boss. I’m best used killing adds at the cannons, so I do. But not many people are DPSing the boss, so it’s annoying (either that or they’re complete failures at the game, which may be, but requires another week of failing before we can draw that conclusion… conclusive…ly…).

Scarlet is the BEST villain in GW2

in Twilight Assault

Drakkon.4782

Scarlet Briar is as bad a character as Jaina Proudmoore from WoW.

No, Scarlet is still worse.

Jaina is just a bad person, but her character isn’t broken. She’s simply unlikable. She’s a prodigy, but she isn’t excellent at everything. Everything doesn’t come to her without effort, only magic. In that aspect, she’s actually a well grounded character. Its her personality that is horrible. She has a martyr complex, a pathological need for everyone around her to get along, and she hangs around with the leaders of both factions. That makes her a problem. If they had her and Thrall get married, it would have solved a lot of problems they have with their story right now. Capt Chin wouldn’t have a reason to trust her, Thrall would still be leader of the Horde, and Garrosh would be some General in Pandaria screwing things up like he did in Northrend.

Scarlet, on the other hand, is everything I said in my last post. She’s as Mary Sue as you can get, and worse, Anet is looking for new ways to make her even more horrible. Get the herbicide and be done with her already.

Look at the rear shots. The tail clips through the armor. Worse, the textures appear stretched and lower res on a Charr because their not adjusted for the larger frame. All in all, the armor just looks bad compared to others. The Asura have the opposite problem, their textures look compressed and shrunken, which can look poor at lower resolutions on slower computers.

Using the high res texture pack doesn’t help because the problem with Charr isn’t the actual resolution, just the way it’s bloated around their bigger frame.

Living Story Lore vehicle needed.

The giant tent over the Great Collapse is a great idea, but a real jamboree like that wouldn’t have been so secretive – there should have been NPCs – citizens, children, guards, etc – excited, happy, and concerned about the large event before it happened.

That’s called a “preamble” in narrative terms, and it is quite useful in moving a story along. ANet has been effective at keeping a story going into the next segment for stragglers who were just one achievement behind, but they also should be foreshadowing the next part of the living story, both to give the living story a narrative link through events, but also to reveal details that will become important in the next section and tie up loose ends in the previous one. Any loose ends not tied up could and should be considered a foreshadow in and of itself that it will come back later to be revisited. Annual events don’t need to be tied up in any way other than seeing NPCs cleaning up from the event, whereas build up beforehand would be nice to give a sense of impending excitement.

And don’t be that store that starts playing Xmas music in September (I’M LOOKING AT YOU LOWES!). That’s a bit too far in advance. Just a little foreshadowing and preamble would be nice.

Big cats, except lions, who arguably have little experience with it, love water. Tigers swim eagerly. They just don’t like water sprayed at their faces. House cats tend to avoid entering water unless entering it is required, as they are not strong swimmers, nor are they particularly buoyant.

I didn’t realize I would need to have library card, newspaper subscriptions and be a member of the Smithsonian to get the whole story.

On the other hand, she’s just a poorly written Mary Sue villain, possibly a self-insert by one of the devs, so it isn’t like I care about her, either. But if that’s how they handle the lore, I’m very disappoint.

If the fools on the Arcane Council are willing to put our most advanced secrets in the hands of bookah, then I believe it’s time to consider alternative governance.

It’s hardly relevant considering the bookahs are constantly monitored anyway. If they find something interesting, we’ll know about it, and we have the best means of utilizing whatever it is they find.
The council knows what it’s doing when it comes to manipulating bookahs, it’s the recent actions of arcane eye and the fact the council is both stubborn and corrupt that we should be worried about.

Spoken like a true sockpuppet of the Council. Asuran culture has no use for apologists.

Indeed. Perhaps some sort of quickening draught to increase alacrity. I really doubt that they are competent enough to actually PILOT a golem, even if we were so inclined to make one large enough for them to get in. What a large and unwieldy thing that would be. I think it would be so slow as to actually induce drag on their already lackluster sloth.

Nonsense! There is no problem that cannot be solved by throwing an even BIGGER Golem at it. One day I’ll get funding for my VOLT-R0N project to unite all golems across Tyria into one super-golem. It’ll be unstoppable! Unstoppable, I tell you!

Yes, and you’ll start a festival at Rata Sum to celebrate our ingenuity; at which point a quaggan called Eavil McVillen will pop up and turn them into his servants in a dastardly mission to turn all Asura into plushie backpacks, because he feels like it.

I refuse to accept your definition of toes because you are both anatomically and logically faulty, wrong, ignorant and just not right. Since we can’t even agree on the basic definitions of what we’re talking about, we’ve left the building as far as rational conversation is concerned. GW1 has been forgetten about

Drakkon.4782

You don’t get the point. In the dialogue that I was talking about the scholars discuss the actions of Prophecies specifically as if it was myth and nothing more. It seems something completely forgotten in today’s society, that is what hurts.

Ask 100 students in America today who won the French-Indian War, you’re as likely to get “France/the French”, “the Indians” as “the Confederacy”. History isn’t something people care about, even if they should. Ancient History is even worse. Give it another hundred years, particularly under conservative rule, and you’ll see history remanded to pockets of outcasts who cling to it like monks hanging onto scripture. Yes, it’s sad, but the practical day to day concerns of simply existing outweigh most people’s need to know where they came from. It only takes 2 generations for a community to go from well educated to culturally starved. America is in its second generation. Gen X saw the first dip in standard of living, living worse off than their parents, and Gen Y has seen the cultural divide between those with money/power and those without grow wider than it did during the Dark Ages, and for much the same reason.

You spend time arguing over what’s happening in a game, and how it shouldn’t happen at all, and all the while it’s happening in the real world all around you. It’s hardly a mystery as to how a culture can forget it’s heritage so quickly. America’s history is being re-written as we speak. It can happen. It has happened. It is happening right now.

On the verge of a breakthrough!

Whenever you greet an Asura, you’ll either hear “Excelsior!” or that phrase…
Being succesfull seems to be an asura’s given x)

What a bookah. Of course we’re all on the verge of a breakthrough! We’re all geniuses (though, I’m by far more gifted than anyone else, except maybe Zojja…) compared to your bookah, and it is only to be expected that we will make a new breakthrough at any moment. I don’t expect you to understand (anything), so it comes as no surprise to me that you aren’t capable of grasping this elementary concept.

By the way, “Excelsior” does not mean what you appear to think it means. It is simply an expression of exuberance for learning. Please adjust your own reactions accordingly.

Hmm… Perhaps I should schedule time to explore new methods of educating bookah, but I’m not certain that would be a valuable use of my time. In fact, I’m almost certain it wouldn’t be.

I guess an “of course because all Asurans are geniuses!” would suffice as explanation…without all that effort to make an exuberant message x)

If you wanted a short answer, bookah, you probably should have asked a Skritt. It isn’t in our nature to answer questions in a sloppy or haphazard manner. There are far more variables and parameters than most people realize when they ask something, and it is completely without conscience to simply answer a question… err… simply. Just because you didn’t understand what you were actually asking when you posited your query doesn’t mean we should treat the inquiry with the same level of callousness.

Honestly, its because of this inability to be so circumspect that I have serious doubts that you bookah can be trained, much less actually educated. I have higher hopes for teaching a Kodan how to play cards. They jut don’t seem to grasp the concept of bluffing…

Who would win in a fight, a Charr or Norn?

in Charr

Posted by: Drakkon.4782

Drakkon.4782

Guys I don’t think we need to go into depths about a simple discussion about a norn fighting a charr. It all depends how the fight goes and from what I remember norn has more brute strength than a charr, but charr has the advantages due to claws. It will be a close fight and one will come out victor while both will be incredibly injured or dead due to too much damage intake/ loss of blood. Pretty much a double K.O

The problem is that the initial argument over Norn v Charr is just ridiculous. There isn’t an answer that anyone will accept.

The conversation about how Charr walk is much more interesting, except Leo has no idea how anatomy actually works. He’s picking a fight on a topic I know quite well, have experimented with (I cosplay, thank you very much), and I know a lot more about digitgrade stances than he does. If I really want to know how a cat walks, I’ll just watch Tiger, the American Shorthair my housemate has. He walks all over my computer while I’m typing. I’m well versed in how he walks, where he puts his weight (because he walks on us when he’s looking for attention), and I can feel exactly what part of his paw he’s putting his weight on, and it’s the big fat pad on the bottom of his paw, NOT his toes. In fact, the only time he puts his weight to his toes is when he’s taking a swipe at my dog, who also walks on the pads of his feet, not his toes (though you wouldn’t know it from how much they clack on the floor when he walks because they’re getting a bit long).

Because of his lack of understanding, I don’t even want to begin tying this back into the initial discussion by adding into the anatomy lesson the concepts of muscle insertion points, fast-reflex vs slow-reflex muscles, and basic joint leverage mechanical advantages. Anyway, I’m mostly just monitoring the conversation at this point for glaring inaccuracies or horrible logic.

Trouble with Flamethrower Recently

This happens most often when you’re tossing turrets or other skills. It’s easy to restore tracking by hitting 1 again. Make sure it’s after the cycle ends (even if you have to manually end it by hitting ESC). It should pick up tracking after that until you toss more turrets. Coincidentally, this also restores turret tracking, too.

Yes, this is only a workaround, and isn’t a fix. ANet needs to get on this, as there are a lot of us Flamegineers out there. It’s very annoying.

Nerf Altruistic Healing.

Drakkon.4782

Altruistic Healing is not overpowered just because a lot of people use it.

This indicates that other traits need to be buffed, actually. When a particular trait is a “go to” trait for just about every build, that means that it’s either OP (which it isn’t in this case) or other traits aren’t good enough to make them viable options over it. Looking over the options, Alt Healing is just a better trait to take. There’s no reason to select the others over it. They just aren’t good enough. Gimping the class isn’t the right answer. It’s a Mob response.

Drakkon.4782

And if a Norn stood on his tip toes too, he’d be taller than a Charr.
Charr are standing on their toes, you know this, right?

FALSE!

Charr have digitgrade legs. They are standing on the balls of their feet, not the toes. Like humans, Norn are plantigrade, resting on the entire foot, including the heel. The difference is negligible because plantigrade creatures tend to have longer thigh and shin bones, making the overall leg longer, while digitgrade creatures tend to have an elongated foot, shorter thigh and shin bones, resulting in the mistaken impression that their legs are “backward”, which the are not. The overall difference between plantigrade and digitgrade legs as a portion of the body length/height is negligible.

THEREFORE, a Charr standing on his toes would still come to the same relative change in height as a Norn doing the same.
