We complain because we care.

Once we stop, the game’s either World’s First Perfect MMO, or dead. The latter being far more probable.

Its so incredible ridiculous and pathetic, how people play themself up her,e as if they would be the fortunetellers per se in person, knowing everything how somethign will end up, without knowing anything at all, basing their half portion of knowlege they just have only on a very uninformative blog post, which tells us basically only the basics about the new system and nothing really very detailed

Feedback/Questions: The Megaserver System: World Bosses and Events

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lishtenbird.2814

I would really prefer to have several standard/small bosses spawn at once, instead of a single one at a time. There’re bosses I like, there’re bosses I don’t, there’re bosses I’ve done already in a different timeslot.

Furthermore, if we have a single boss at a time, we’ll always have to fight with the full zerg, and I think I don’t have to tell developers that killing Frozen Maw or Inquest Golem with 5 people is a lot faster and more fun than a 10-minute auto-attack on a gigantic HP bag upscaled by a large zerg who had no other bosses to do anyway. This is a design decision which will make the game less comfortable with the new system.

Take the God kitten target info from the top of the screen!
Countless are the times I’m aiming an AoE, get too close up there and the thing just casts at my feet.

Yes! Most displays come with a 16:9 aspect ratio nowadays, and I’m so tired of having to lower down the camera till the floor to see boss animations (like Dwayna’s particle shower, not even speaking about Holos) – which also means till the moment that the camera zooms into my character again.

I would be so happy to be able to move target’s bar down to the skillbar. It will both help see target’s visual cues and let me control both my skill cooldowns and target’s buffs in events similar to Assault Knights and champs with reataliation/protection/defiance.

[Suggestion] Putting a CAP on Currencies

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

You can already forge your karma into linen, turn tokens into ectos etc I don’t see your point. Why do it all at once, and not as you get it? No sane reason? How about keeping the old currencies important and adding new items to buy with them instead of adding new currencies all the time?

Because today I don’t feel like doing it, and tomorrow I don’t? Because it is a frigging game to enjoy and not a daily inventory management simulator (oh wait…) or something to feel bad about simply because I don’t feel like doing it today and not tomorrow? We already have enough stupid daily limits and daily chores and enough of bank/bag space issues which turn this game into Click Wars. No need for more.

Imagine that. Players can already destroy the market if they choose to convert all those currencies into something else, yet they don’t for some reason. All hoardable currencies do is increase the prices of everything. If Bandit Crests were capped at 1000 or 2000 then there would be little reason to price Carapace armor pieces at 1000. So yeah, hoardable currencies make everything cost more, and force people to grind more for whatever they want, while also making those currencies useless once someone gets what they want.

You know why they don’t do it? Because
a) it’s boring to do it,
b) they don’t need to convert it at the moment,
c) they’re waiting for something to happen to use all of it (remember the laurel to UnId Dye conversion) since at that moment it will be worth the effort,
d) they expect something which will require these items in the future.
This is

If someone is sooo indecisive then they will have bigger problems

That’s plain silly and you know it.

If I want to play AC today, I want to play AC today and not sit on my new character and buy armour for it, or sit and choose between two skins in a rush because I’ll miss on tokens.
If I want to play EoTM, I want to go play EoTM and not convert karma to linen.
If I want to play SW, I want to go play SW and not decide which of the tonics or skins to choose at the moment. And so on.

The only things that your suggestion adds are frustration from lost rewards, excessive time sinks and stress on managing capped currencies, inflexible markets, and inability to freely play the content you want with your friends when you have limited time (like 90% of players do). And all this in a game you paid for to enjoy in your free time.

4. HOLY TRINITY

[~] Threads for reference:

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
  • No Holy Trinity means no dedicated roles. No roles means no distinct place for you in the world and no way to master your role, which in turns means boring gameplay.
  • Absence of dedicated roles leads to issues with gear diversity, such as “zerk meta”.
  • Trinity provides easier ways to create new encounters, including challenging ones.

[-] Arguments against:

  • That other game also has the frustration of waiting for a certain type of player, gear treadmill, open-world PvP and other things which spice up the life for some players while annoying other players. GW2 is a different game which caters to less competitive players: you can play what you want and how you want (and complete it at your own pace) – which is what makes GW2 loved by many people who bought the original “revolutionary” MMO.
  • As easy as it seems, combat in GW2 is rather deep and has a lot of room for self-improvement and “fun”. Further reading: GW2: official Blogpost about the Holy Trinity – the philosophy behind no holy trinity explained by developers. Dungeon speedclear videos can tell you about tactics, guides – about builds and rotations which provide best class synergy; sPvP has variety of builds, team compositions and map tactics and tricks are very important there; WvW roaming is unique – all this requires different sets of skills, traits, weapons and tactics which become better if you’re in the right party, even if there’s no trinity.
  • Constraints are fun for some; freedom is fun for others. You can be a healing WvW thief, a buffing DPS ele, an unkillable Nomad troll warrior – your role is up to you to decide, but you will still be able to complete content because the game doesn’t pigeonhole you into a single role.
  • Instead of one gear meta for all players, there will be one meta for each trinity class – and nothing will really change.
  • Absence of holy trinity is refreshing. It also allows to bring new types of encounters which benefit from non-trinity mechanics.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • “Holy Trinity” threads are often met with negativity because players are already enjoying the game the way it is and do not see a reason to scrap the old established system which is fairly unique in favour of a generic one. Minor changes to things like condition caps or mob AI sound like better ways of gameplay improvements.

"Skill Grind" Can Be Worse Than "Gear Grind"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

Why not wait for some actual information to be released before jumping on the “end of the world so much grind!” train?

Because:

  • Everything that’s being done recently and referenced as a model in HoT reveals is based on (relatively to GW2, not other games) heavy grind.
  • ANet is known to misinterpret and overdeliver. Examples: Traits, NPE.
  • Action should be taken before stuff which stays for years gets introduced. Examples: Commander tags, 300g for each color.

That said, I don’t see any reason for leaving the lair but removing chests. (Apart from some kind of lame coding issues which could lead to a finite amount of slots for temporary “tokens”.)

6. NEW CLASSES / NEW SKILLS / NEW WEAPONS / NEW RACES

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • More variety is always good. New classes can bring back people who tried everything but didn’t find anything they really liked.
  • The game is becoming stale with no new skills. New skills can revitalize the whole game by adding new strategies to older content.
  • Adding existing weapon types to existing professions is a way of introducing a lot of new skills without worrying about designing new items.
  • Completely new weapons bring both new skills and new visuals into the game. Acquiring the weapons themselves will give an incentive to redo older content.

[-] Arguments against:

  • Variety is a balancing nightmare. It is twice a balancing nightmare since ANet insists on not splitting skills for PvP and PvE. It leads to some classes being nerfed from a PvP point and becoming frustrating and unrewarding to play in PvE. Imagine what will become with balancing if new skills and weapons are constantly added? This might be too much to handle for a game with no subscription fee – two years into the game, old classes, old weapons and old skills are still being balanced.
  • Not all people like variety that much. Ever wondered why so many people bought iPhones? Answer: because variety is confusing and overwhelming. For casual players (and GW2 is aiming towards casuals with its B2P model), taking it to the extreme, 10 rows of 12 skills can pretty much mean “No thank you, I’ll go play an Android game instead (of learning all that stuff only no-lifers can handle)”.
  • People coming back to the game (and they’re supposed to since it’s “pay once, play whenever you want”) will feel left behind if they have to adapt “too much”. Changing traits and utility skills to play in a new map is one thing, recrafting gear for new stats and weapon types is another thing.
  • Not everyone likes to change the build they have invested time and gold into with every update. Some people prefer stability to novelty.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • “New skills and weapons” threads are usually met with enthusiasm, but there’s little point in discussing the topic aside from the sheer fun of speculation. Some specific and thought-out ideas might, though, be noticed by developers and noted for future use.

I think that new skills and/or weapons will be added some day, but most likely in low quantities – not to overwhelm casual players and not to kill the class balance department, and far later in the game’s existence. New GM traits are far more likely to be added more or less regularly, though. I also think that there’s a rather low chance to see new classes in the foreseeable future – too much in the game has been balanced with the current ones only in mind, and remember that all content in GW2 can be played by level 80s and will not be replaced by expansions.

[Suggestion] Complete All Gathering Tool Sets

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

Mixing and matching gathering tools might be nice, but having full sets of gathering tools is even better.

Currently we have three complete thematic sets:

  • Molten/fused gathering tools (the phoenix is kinda unwarranted, but still)
  • -r-tron gathering tools
  • Minion set (the bone pick features an oil theme which could’ve been used separately, but still)

Several items have also appeared in bundles:

  • Gadgeteer pack (Watchwork, Chop-It-All, Thresher-Sickle 5000)
  • Consortium pack (Consortium Harvesting Sickle, Chop-It-All, Molten)

I would instead prefer to have each theme getting a whole set of tools:

  • Dreamcleaver set (based on Dreamcleaver axe – my favourite – would’ve got it already if there was a matching set!)
  • Nature/Water set (based on Consortium Harvesting Sickle)
  • Lightning/Storm set (based on Chop-It-All Axe)
  • Watchwork set (could we nerf the sprockets already so that people can buy tools based purely on looks and not efficiency?)
  • Fancy Magical/Insect tools (based on Frost Wasp)
  • Jack-in-the-Box should never appear again better stay unique IMO, and Thresher-Sickle 5000 is more or less the same as -r-trons, so…
  • While we’re at it, how about a Mordrem gathering tool set?

So, are you okay with mixing tools or would you also like complete matching sets?

Reminder: this thread is not about how expensive these tools are, how you’ll never buy them at this price, how you’ll never return the gold, how they should be accessible by all characters etc. but about complete thematic sets

Agreed, this has been one of the best concepts I’ve seen when I first tried out GW2.
Kill things – unlock skills. Kill more things – unlock more skills. It felt perfectly logical, it was exciting and encouraged you to try out all weapons to see what they can do.

On the other hand, having random weapon skills unlocked without knowing what they do or why they got unlocked is actually far more confusing and illogical.

"Nearest Enemy" Is Literally Nearest (+more)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

and here’s a good example of why Anet can simply never win with the community.

this is something that a lot of people complained about before.. that “nearest” shouldn’t depend on which direction you’re facing, that nearest should literally be the nearest enemy, period.

they’ve now fixed it so of course people are now complaining about wanting it reverted.

I don’t really have an opinion on which it should be.. but it’s important to remember that for every complaint you have about the game, there’s plenty of people that want the very opposite.

I do not remember people ever asking for Centaur Supplies being targeted behind your back when you’re heading towards a Veteran Centaur to make a ranged interrupt opening.

What I do remember is people asking for the enemy to be targeted if you killed the guy in the front and there’s still someone really close to you to the side or back who’s attacking you, especially if you know it since your view is zoomed out.

I agree that tweaking such things for everyone’s taste is tricky, but manual options and common sense make far more sense than iterating in a radius around your character.

"Play How I Want" Is Gone

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

There is another quote in that very same blog that is relevant: “We’ll add support so daily achievements will be different each day of the week, which will help drive players to different areas of the world and play together.”

They always intended for people to go here and there, doing different things to get the achievements. It never was play where you want to get those rewards. People may have been able to do so, but it wasn’t their original intention.

I’m perfectly fine with people who complete Ascalon Logger getting a bunch of extra wood (and even a bit of experience). I can get this wood elsewhere.

I’m perfectly fine with people who complete Queensdale Zerger getting some centaur trash, or greens, or even some [Delicious Boar Steak] (+10% movement speed when in a zerg; +10% experience from events). I can get these greens elsewhere.

What I am not fine with is stuffing “the most powerful rewards” – AP, which cannot be unlimitedly grinded unlike barracudas in Southsun, – into such events and forcing me to click vistas and do Fractals 11 instead of doing Fractals 50, Tequatl or Winter Wonderland.

The thing is Hellfire is not a powerful reward, just cosmetic.

In a game without infinite vertical progression, skins are the powerful reward. As well as gemstore stuff which comes out of AP chests (like Total Makeover Kits or +20 levels scrolls).

11. RAIDS / GUILD RAIDS

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
  • Doing stuff with more people is fun. This also applies to large guilds which want to do stuff more epic than 5-man dungeons (which can be soloed).
  • Veteran hardcore gamers need more challenging stuff to do, since PvE is widely considered to be too easy. Raids can fill that niche and make veteran players interested in the game again.

[-] Arguments against:

  • That other game is more competitive and oriented towards hardcore gamers.
  • Not everyone shares the opinion that more people = more fun; more people can also mean more frustration to both find and coordinate; Twisted Marionette, Escape from LA are examples of such frustrating events from GW2’s history.
  • The game caters to casual players a lot, and you can see it from the Personal Story and the Living Story instances. Veteran hardcore players may indeed want raids; but are there actually enough veteran hardcore players in GW2 to justify spending resources on designing missions which only they will play?
  • GW2 lacks tools for organising and coordinating people.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • The “raids” threads are usually met positively, though there are concerns whether there are enough players which can benefit from those.

Commander tags have been slightly improved, guild raids were discussed in the CDI, and ANet was hiring a person with experience in designing raids. I think there’s a rather high probability we will see raids in the future – or at least some content which is similar to those, even if it’s open world and not limited to guilds.

Yay more nerfs! /dance

in Mesmer

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

HM nerf aside, the background mantra recharge thing really hurts. In Anet’s eyes it was a bug from the inception of the 6/23 patch. They don’t look at how it improved the QoL of mantras, they just saw it as a bug on their big list needing fixed so they fixed it.

I’m sure the “Mesmer OP” rants of late made sure it got prioritized higher. It’s unfortunate.

Reminds me of…

How does one know if a bug destroys the game or even if a legitimate tactic destroys it? The rule of thumb is to assume it doesn’t and keep playing, because 99% of the time, as good as the tactic may be, there will either be a way to counter it or other even better tactics. Prematurely banning something is the scrub’s way. It prevents the scrub from ever discovering the counter to the Valle CC or the diamond trick. It also creates artificial rules that alter the game, when it’s entirely possible that the game was just fine the way it was. It also usually leads to an avalanche of bans in order to be consistent with the first. When players think they have found a game-breaking tactic, I advise them to go win some tournaments with it. If they can prove that the game really is reduced to just that tactic, then perhaps a ban is warranted. It’s extremely rare that a player is ever able to prove this though. In fact, I don’t even have any examples of it.

A note to game developers: fix your bugs after release if you have the opportunity to do so. But beware that players enjoy the feeling of wielding “unfair” tactics, and taking that away from them can be a mistake if the “unfair” tactic isn’t powerful enough to single-handedly win tournaments.

14. MARRIAGE

[~] Threads for reference:

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
  • Marriage contributes to roleplay.
  • Marriage makes people more emotionally attached to their heroes. It helps to retain players.
  • Marriage gives additional benefits.
  • You can share stuff, trade without taxes and so on.

[-] Arguments against:

  • GW2 is not that other game. It is a not a dating sim, it’s an RPG with a lot of combat, pretty linear story and very little roleplay.
  • If you’re into roleplay, you don’t really need an official wedding system since it’s about feelings and not formal attributes.
  • Fictional marriages are usually what teenagers require from each other, because those give recognition (lvl 80 is better than lvl 70, ascended is better than exotic, married is better than single). This also goes along with a lot of internet drama. Do we really need to bring more drama into the peaceful world of moderated Tyria?
  • This game is child friendly. If you introduce marriage, where do you stop? What about interracial, same-sex relationships and other delicate matters? What about player housing (see above)? What about children? The absence of swimsuits is also a fact to consider.
  • If marriage has additional benefits like more storage space, everyone will be married just for those benefits. It devalues the whole idea.
  • There’s really too much potential for fraud in sharing items. There’s actually so much potential that even in fiction about RPGs marriage frauds are a known scenario.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • “Marriage” threads are met with negativity, because this topic has been discussed quite a lot of times and people think it doesn’t belong here.

[suggestion]Dungeon Mentoring

Lishtenbird.2814

Why is enabling people to play dungeons of their level range out of the question?

I should not have to be level 80 to run level 35/50 dungeons, plain and simple

I should not be forced to run AC with lvl 35 players not even having elites, either. Plain and simple.

Why the respect to “play how I want” should go only one way?

This community has certainly changed for the worse in some aspects.
2012 had it better, with less restrictive mindsets and a more casual attitude.
More openness to the individual, rather than adherence to a certain Batman quote.

When everyone is level 35 masterwork, no one complains about full exotic zerk level 80s. What a surprise

Do not post more than one bug per thread: lists of bugs are not very helpful to us because we’re frequently sending thread links to specific people who may not be able to address the other bugs you’re reporting. Please make a separate thread for each bug you’re seeing. [edit] This is with the exception of a staff request for bugs to be consolidated.

This is under the sticky on how to report bugs. If I’m mistaken let me know and I’ll delete this reply. But at the moment there is so much other stuff in here besides just a plan bug report.

You may be right, perhaps this is why the devs ignore us. What shall we do now? Make 40+ new threads here?

The devs stopped noticing the thread for two reasons:

  • It has too much offtopic grumpiness. Yes, there’s a reason for it, which is: no appropriate dev attention to these problems. That’s a vicious circle. When we got that attention, we appreciated it, remained pretty constructive and waited patiently for our fixes; when the one person who seemed to care left, we were left with even more miscommunication, unfixed bugs, new bugs and ninja-nerfs – so no wonder we’re a bit upset here, right?
  • They have their own view on our class and on our bugs, while they also have a large queue of bugs, little time dedicated to actually fixing things, and a skewed priority system (iLeap “fix” vs unbugged iWarden). This is made worse by the fact that they can’t (or are strongly not willing to as it is not cost-efficient in their view) fix the underlying mechanics of the engine which cause bugs like pathing issues, broken blinks and getting permanently stuck in place.

Having an extensive properly formatted list of fully documented bugs with examples and suggestions from the community is useful for any developer, provided that a) it has all the necessary information regarding the bug and/or b) has links to specific posts, videos, threads; “naked” lists which purely say that bugs exist are not really helpful indeed. Proper lists may also let the person dealing with a specific bug notice something in an adjacent bug what was actually the key to solving the problem. This also serves as a good argument in assigning more time to a specific class if a coder wants to get it from his uppers. New bugs, though, should still get separate threads regardless for ANet’s forum combers to easily register.

However, since I’ve personally lost faith in this idea after a certain incident with a piece of my feedback, I’m not eager to run this list anymore. Again, if anyone feels like s/he can update the list to its current ~30-40 form with proper formatting, grammar, forum/youtube links etc. and make it into a new thread, I would be happy to “move” there.

Suggestion: player camera improvements

Don’t think it’s been mentioned: “about face” doesn’t always work, depending on the camera view you’re using; IIRC it’s ignored if right mouse is held. Having it work in all camera modes would be both a camera and gameplay improvement.

You know you’ve been reading GW2 forum too much when…
…you can tell it’s Friday by looking at the thread titles in the general subforum.

You know you’ve been playing PvE too much when…
…you read AC as “Ascalonian Catacombs”, and not “air conditioning” or “alternating current”.

You know you’ve been playing WvW too much when…
…you read AC as “arrow cart”, and not “Ascalonian Catacombs”.

They’re making short-term decisions which make metrics look better in the short term, but will IMO kill the game in the long-term by alienating loyal players which were willing to support the game.

Once loyal players are gone and they’re out of new players, the game will die. But it will happen tomorrow, while today everything looks better and the money keep coming – which is perfectly sensible from the business point of view if you’ve been hired for a certain period of time and are not working on a product which should make everyone happy and feed you till the rest of your.

Mega server problem with lag and Dcing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

The issue is your computer is requesting too much information from the servers and your computer and/or internet connection can’t handle it. The easiest way to ‘fix’ this issue is to utilize the graphics options available.

Graphical settings have zero effect on Internet usage. The server transfers a constant amount of data, client simply renders the received data according to graphical settings of the client.

  • If you disconnected, it was either your local ISP problem or ANet’s. Since DCing after LS updates is very frequent, it’s most likely ANet’s problem – their servers can’t handle the amount of people present in each instance.
  • If your skills are lagging (up to not firing at all), it’s either ISP or ANet’s problem; most likely it’s ANet’s problem as their servers can’t handle the amount of people they squished in each instance. The amount of skill lag after launch of megaservers has skyrocketed for me.
  • If the client crashed, it’s either your PC which couldn’t render the data provided by the client due to non-client soft/hardware issues, or the client’s been bugged, your specific settings triggered the bug, and it crashed.
  • If your framerate is low, it’s always your PC + client problem; there’s a limit to upgrading your PC (because the client is badly optimized and uses outdated technologies), after which you can only reduce graphical settings and/or resolution.

What I find disturbing is that “projected profit” got removed and replaced by two fees. I am afraid that this was done on purpose, to make people do all the math themselves. The main complaint about “projected profit” (as stated in the post) was not that we wanted to see the fees… the complaint was that it didn’t calculate all the fees.

…Why would they do that on purpose?

“Aha! Lishtenbird made a mistake on his maths, and now a couple more silver are going to be removed from the economy! Mwahaha!”
“Good job, Evil Developer! Your devious UI design has fooled another of our witless players into losing a marginal amount of money!”

You implied sarcasm, but this sounds “funny” only if you aren’t used to seeing such schemes in development. The original “projected profit” was misinforming people by not including all fees; the current system is neither showing the real projected profit. Why do I need it? Because, say, if I’m flipping items, I want to see the price -15% without alt-tabing to this to put a price where I’m in profit.

Many a little make a mickle. Take 100’000 flipping operations per day from people who were too lazy to do the math. Multiply that by 1 silver of miscalculation. Multiply that by 30. That’s 3 thousand gold per month.

Flipping is good for economy as it sinks gold and stabilizes market, while also providing players with instant supply of materials – so there’s no point in removing it. But if you combine flipping with lack of information, you also make people pay for their lack of trading skill.

Meanwhile, not providing part of non-essential information inside the game is perfectly legit. Why do you need gw2spidy graphs? Because you want to make profit. In that case, you either do it outside the game, or pay for convenience of not having to alt-tab by losing money from time to time. Nothing wrong here

I am really happy for all these people playing PvP only and having stacks of tomes, but I’m even more happy for all those people who were forever asking for instant 80 consumables, XP collectors and more accessible tomes for alts, especially after the NPE update. At 8 lvl 80s, I’m still creating alts and I find these tomes extremely useful.

2 advices to those with stacks of tomes:

  • Key farming.
  • Skillpoint to gold.

+33% PvE Confusion? Next, Buff ALL Condies!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lishtenbird.2814

Lishtenbird.2814

There’s a quick and dirty fix to the condi issues in PvE which doesn’t require fixing what should but cannot be easily fixed (condition stack caps), and it’s been suggested by me and other people before:

To all non-player characters in the game, all damaging conditions do +33% more damage. Or rather, all players have a permanent “condition resistance” of -N% (like 33%).

Here, I fixed it! Suddenly, running condi builds in PvE makes some sense!

The Confusion buff set a precedent and showed that it can be done and is worth doing. (Unfortunately, this negligible buff will still change nothing – apart from the fact that officially the issue has been addressed and something has been done.)

We can even go further and convert conditions applied to Structures to a universal Magical Degradation debuff which turns all applied conditions into a single damage over time effect. It can still be less efficient than direct damage, but wouldn’t exclude condi builds completely from content involving structures (especially since there are no “condi only” counterparts in the game whatsoever).
