when will this be balanced?

The problem with Lich Form, like all the transform elites, is that it scales up your stats. This makes sense for stuff like Toughness and Vitality, but for Power and Precision, it has some pretty stupid effects.

The interaction between scaled up Power and skills outside of the normal set of Transform skills (such as Sigil of Fire, Sigil of Air, Spinal Shivers proc, Wells and Marks laid down before the transformation) causes Lich Form to do ungodly amounts of damage that it really shouldn’t do.

In my opinion, Transform Skills should have their Power/Precision increases removed, but the Transform kit skills themselves should have very large Base damage and damage coefficients to compensate (since being Transformed gets rid of your armor/accessory/amulet stat increases).

New player, Ele - what is this "meta"?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

In this context, the term “meta” is shorthand for “metagame”.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metagaming

“In simple terms, it is the use of out-of-game information or resources to affect one’s in-game decisions.”

The term Metagame is used in several contexts. These are usually competitive in nature. For example, let’s pretend I play a game of chess against an opponent, and I know that they have a particular strategy they often like to use whenever they play. I may try to use my foreknowledge of that person’s strategy when I play against that particular opponent.

Another example would be picking and counter-picking in game formats where this is allowed. For example, in a MOBA, teams alternate in their choice of picks. Let’s say you’re on such a team, and the last player to pick, and you had some particular hero/champion that you wanted to play. However, you look at the other picks of your opponents’ team, and decide to play with a different hero/champion, knowing that your new choice counters the choices your opponents made. This is Metagaming at its core. You are using your knowledge of the matchups of various heroes/champions to decide what your next move should be, rather than simply picking your favorite hero/champion every time.

We can apply this concept, too, to games where many decisions are made beforehand. Take Magic: The Gathering. Let’s say I want to enter some tournament. A good strategy to start with, when choosing to enter an MTG tournament, is to go look up the “metagame” of that format (let’s pick Standard). I go look up the Standard Metagame of MTG, which means I look at the most popular decks for the Standard Format in Magic. This data of the most popular decks is called Magic’s “Metagame”. So I look at these decks, notice that many of them play a particular strategy, so I go ahead and build my deck to counter the choices of what is popular. Mind you, an even better Magic player will realize that other players are doing this exact same thing, and so they will attempt to go further, and try to counter the choices of the people who are trying to counter the Metagame as well! And so on.

So the question becomes, how on earth does this apply to a non-competitive thing like GW2 PvE? Honestly, it has to do with Guild Wars’ history. In Guild Wars 1, much of the harder content could not be done without specialized builds. This was because GW1 had highly creative and fine-tuned encounters, and players’ builds could also be highly tuned, complex, and creative. The content in high-end PvE in GW1 could be so difficult that it required that players research and theorycraft builds, just to overcome it. This is an example of Metagaming in a PvE enviornment.

Once GW2 came out, it actually turned out that no such content exists in PvE.
>_>

HOWEVER, much of the try-hard spirit of GW1 players remains, and so a mantra was largely started that one could not simply do a dungeon, they had to do the dungeon efficiently. And there is actually something to this. If you’ve done a dungeon path multiple times, you will soon grow weary of taking 30 minutes+ to do a single dungeon path, when you know that an efficient group can do it in 20, 15, 10, or even 5ish minutes. In fact, since GW2 has had the same dungeons now for over 2 years, many of the veteran players simply get bored running dungeons in an ‘inefficient’ manner. Therefore, what started out as the mantra of a few “elite” players gradually grew to become the widely-held belief of the general player base. Many players who still run dungeons don’t care to do them inefficiently, and want players to run the highest-damage, most efficient builds possible. This is how we ended up with a “Metagame” for a game that does not have truly challenging PvE content. Enjoyable but unchanging dungeon content over two years caused adjusted the community’s expectations to have “speedrunning” builds as the so-called “Meta”.

Zelyhn's Advanced D/F [PvE Guide]

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

@ Neko: I mentioned your initial comment on Zelyhn’s guide earlier, and I totally agree. I just think that, for both your guide and Zelyhn’s, there needs to be in the opening paragraph something like “The s/x + LH build is top DPS and might-stacking. If these are important to you, use that build. No other builds mentioned in this guide will excel in both those areas to the same degree.” It is simply amazing how many noobs on this forum refuse to use LH because they think their own builds somehow do higher damage. We need to combat that by asserting truth up-front.

I totally understand that the LH spec in your guide is just outdated; my own guide was written just a few weeks ago, and it’s already outdated as well. What I don’t understand is this: there are “best-practices” that the most elite guilds EXPECT applicants to know, but those methods were not included in your guide, Zelyhn’s guide, or any other guide I could find on this forum. That’s why I felt it was VERY important for me to write my own guide and post them there. There are a few things that still aren’t in it, but I intend to add them after the Dec 10th update.

I assume that you and Zelyhn know the same methods I do for speed-clears, but you never included them in your guides. So it’s very hard for someone who wants to maximize his damage or properly play his class in the context of an experienced speed-group to learn what he is supposed to do, because neither of your guides cover that. I’d like you to edit your guides to provide that information; if you like, you could simply copy what I wrote into your thread, but even if you choose not to do that, it DOES still need to be there. Part of why there are so many noobs in this game is that it’s difficult for them to learn. Step 1 for a new player interested in playing the best he can are looking at guides by yourself, Zelyhn, and Daphoenix, but those guides are not giving him the information that he needs to play at a high level. It’s up to you guys to fix that. I’ve tried my best, writing my own guide, but there’s really not much more that I can do.

How about this, I’ll link to your guide for your guide since you seem far more into it than I am, these days. To be honest, I stopped being as into “elite” PvE a long, long time ago. I just want people to have decent damage and use good pulling techniques. I even stopped swapping between a stacking weapon and a Force weapon a while ago just because I’d always feel crushed when I lost my stacks and had to swap out and everything. Just became a hassle.

I’ll make sure to make it more clear about what is the “best” though, and I was pretty good about linking to other guides that I felt would help others. I do think your own guide is closer to the “meta” than any of the others in this forum. And it’ll definitely be one of the first changes I link to.

Given that, to be quite honest, I don’t even know what the “optimal” LH Ele trait spread array is, outside of at least 10 in Water for the abusive interaction between Piercing Shards, staying in Water Attunement, and Lightning Hammer have together. And I’ve listened to enough PvE theorycrafters top dog and out-calculate and spreadsheet wars each other over whether more in Air or Fire or whatever leads to ever-so-slightly higher DPS (and subsequently got a bit sick of thinking about it). I guess I’ll look around and try and figure out what the “best” one is for Might stacking, Fury, and DPS (probably something like… 30/0/10/20/0, and then you can put 10 points in either Air for more damage or 10 in Arcana for the slightly more noobish among us), just to make sure that information is out there. I’ll put it out once we see what December 10 has in store for us.

By the way, I would also suggest PMing a mod and asking for your guide to be stickied, if you feel it’s an important enough resource for the community as a whole. It’s probably about time we had a dedicated pure meta-builds guide on the sticky section.

They’re never going to change this.

It was an overreaction of a change in a very niche meta and the developers are far too proud to ever admit a mistake like that (see choosing to make Immobilize stack, even if basically all players find it to be an absolutely abhorrent change to the game).

Obviously it should go back to what it was, originally. All of the Elementalist’s problems in PvP literally come down to survivability and mobility, and I’m fairly certain if this change alone were made, the class would be fine. But as long as the Elementalist lacks a good, low-CD escape, it will always be the worst PvP class with the lowest stats.

Back from a little lay off.... Scepters?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

Scepters are the flavor of the month it seems (and I’m sure that, at the speed the GW2 metagame moves, it’ll be the flavor of the month for many months). The main reason is they slowed down the classic 0/10/0/30/30 spec by removing stunbreaks from Lightning Flash and Cleansing Fire, as well as nerfing Bountiful Power to only give 1% DPS increase as opposed to 2%.

Given that, the build is still incredibly strong. Blinx posted a build here about it, showing its rather strong position in the current sPvP metagame: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/elementalist/Top-Tier-Ele-PvP-Guide

I think a lot of it has to do with speeding up Phoenix and the changning and adding of a few traits (Persisting Flames for PvE and Fresh Air for PvP). It made people more receptive to the Scepter, and indeed, it’s been an underrated weapon for a long time, so yes, it’s nice to see that it’s finally being used. It’s definitely a viable weapon set and I’d suggest looking for Zoose’s guide to the S/D Ele if you’re curious on how to use it.

A call to Balance D/D Ele. Bursts

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

This is the funniest post I’ve seen in this subforum in months.

I’m curious as to what happened to you that you’re calling to nerf one of the weaker specs in the game.

The D/D Ele sees virtually no play in sPvP, is now bad for roaming thanks to the RTL nerf, due to sustainability nerfs has become suboptimal in WvW Raids, and is generally regarded as highly underpowered compared to other specs in PvE Dungeons.

I have played this spec for well over 1000 hours, and played it in high-end PvE, organized WvW, and YOLO QUEUE sPvP. I even have an Incinerator.

It’s highly underpowered. You’re completely wrong to call to nerf it. The Ele is highly squishy and dies easily to any other profession when not specced for bunker. If it’s a bunker spec, its sustained damage becomes absolutely pitiful. At best, its burst damage is pretty good, but even then, it’s either too bunkery to deal enough damage, or too glassy to survive. The elementalist is just generally underpowered across all formats of the game and D/D especially has been nuked several times and even now the developers gloat over how well they managed to kitten the spec.

You are completely wrong.

I can understand blacklisting Quickness from being copied by Heat Sync, but stripping down every other boon from the list just because Quickness copying is possibly overpowered is crazy. Copying the other common Ele boons (Swiftness, Fury, Regeneration, Protection) is something the class does anyway, and would honestly be fine for the Tempest in my opinion.

[Feedback] The real problem with Air Magic...

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

… is the instant burst of Scepter Fresh Air Eles in sPvP.

Listen, I understand why Air Magic has been… changed, in this manner. I see where the the devs are coming from. While Scepter Fresh Air Eles aren’t particularly meta in sPvP, the ability of such an Ele to instantaneously deal damage is very strong, and if done correctly, lacks much counterplay.

So the devs nerfed the damage in Air Magic. No more Bolt to the Heart + Air Training + Fresh Air.

The problem is you guys have totally wrecked the damage for all Eles investing in Air and hoping to use Air for damage.

And the damage isn’t even a problem! If you actually had a chance to mitigate or heal some of that damage, you wouldn’t always get completely wrecked each time a Scepter Fresh Air Ele managed to get a full combo off on you.

The problem is the speed at which Scepter Fresh Air Eles deal damage in sPvP. It’s instant. Combined with double-proccing sigils, the instant damage was too much.

But rather than nerf all damage for Eles, why not consider the alternative – remove the uncounterable aspect of Lightning Strike. Give it a slight pause so that a player has an opportunity to dodge before getting hit. The cast can be instant, but a telegraph – let’s say a lightning cloud – could appear above the player to indicate that damage is about to come.

This would be a great way to reduce the uncounterable, instant aspect of Scepter Fresh Air Ele burst in sPvP, without completely derailing damage-oriented Eles that want to invest in what should otherwise be a damage-oriented tree.

And if I am wrong, I’d like to be corrected as well, because right now, this is how I read the blog post, and if that information is unclearly communicated, it should be addressed and clarified as soon as possible.

Seekers Of The Storm [Zeal] is a casual WvW guild dedicated to defending SBI’s property and keeping our Borderland on lockdown.

We focus primarily on defensive play. We do raiding, scouting, seiging, upgrading structures, and work to cap objectives in an efficient and quick manner.

What to expect:

  • We require 100% rep in WvW (you can represent other guilds in PvE).
  • There are no dedicated times that the guild constantly runs, but we expect you to spend at least a sizable portion of your time playing and running with us.
  • You must get on voice comms on the SBI Teakspeak server when running with us. Voice comms are a necessity. You must also rep us with the tag [Zeal] in TS.
  • You must have at least one level 80 character. Due to the nature of our playstyle, we do not have any strict class requirements. However, we expect you to be able to play in small-scale team combat well. You should be able to hold yourself against roamers and small groups.
  • We want to create a positive atmosphere in our guild and in the SBI community. You should come to WvW with an optimistic outlook, and not shout down or cuss out other players just because things are going badly. Zeal strives to be a guild that uplifts people’s spirits, and give them a constant point to rally on and hope even when our home BL is under heavy attack.
  • We are recruiting for all time zones. It is our ultimate goal that Zeal can keep a small, constant, cohesive presence on our home borderlands, ready to respond when things go wrong, and ready to prepare when things are going right.
  • Most importantly, we are looking for players who have a desire to learn, get better, and think for themselves. We are all trying to improve our skill at the game, and we want all members to be able to call shots or make judgement calls as is necessary.

Make Conjures like Banners

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

Here’s a thought. Players have been asking for Conjures to be like Kits. That’s cool and I support the idea, but what if we went a different route, and made them like Banners instead?

In particular, I think we could save the Fire tree, Ele survivability, and Conjures, all in one if we made the Fire tree support them better.

Here’s my idea. Maybe Conjures shouldn’t create one in your hands and one on the field. You just summon one to the field, and you can pick it up. It has no charges, it just lasts for 60 seconds, then it’s gone. You can also drop the weapon, and rather than disappearing, someone else can pick it up once you’re done with it.

So what do we do with Conjurer? Well, we could just get rid of it, and create way better traits to support Conjures instead.

For instance, what about a trait that said:
-“Conjures give their stat bonuses to nearby allies.”

This could easily be worth a Master Trait slot. Giving your allies tons of bonus stats from weapons would turn the Conjures into bright little totems that would significantly boost your party in support, while also having great functionality as well. Warrior Banners are less functional, but they don’t have to trait to have them endow (gigantic) stat bonuses, so it seems like a pretty fair way to treat them.

Then, perhaps for a Grandmaster Trait, we could make something like this:
“Conjures grant a boon to nearby allies. Hammer – 5 seconds of Swiftness every 3 seconds, Axe – 5 seconds of Might every 3 seconds, Bow – 5 seconds of Regen every 3 seconds, Shield – 5 seconds of Protection every 3 seconds.”

This would allow you to build a wonderfully colorful support-damage Elementalist around conjures while giving out boons and bonuses, and then of course, the conjures themselves, which no longer have charges, and can be passed around since they don’t disappear when dropped! The protection granted by the Shield would also be tremendously helpful, giving the Elementalist a way to gain Protection outside of having to spec 20 in the Arcana tree, while also investing in a DPS tree.

Just my thoughts.

You should easily get a full set of exotic gear in a week that way.

Whisper me in-game and I’ll help you find a group to do daily world boss train with.

Also, Arah is hard. It’s supposed to be hard. Especially on a Necromancer. I don’t suggest doing it just for the armor (unless you really desperately need the skin). If you’re just going for exotic gear, much more economical to buy it off of the TP.

Over nerf on Ice Bow?

Today was the first time after 3 years and over 6000 hours of playtime that i consider to leave the game. This was the reason https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK1N_vqJPac&feature=youtu.be

No matter how many times i watch this and trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, it still turns out to be Arenanet giving the elementalists the finger, and not in a twisted funny way, but in a gloating ugly way.

Then i see how they tell us that Hey we have buffed your elite skill and it turns out you buffed the glyps, which very few of us ever uses anyway since the pet dies in two hits.

So in the end we still only have one elite still to use which is fiery sword and noone uses it for the damage but to move faster forward. The Icebow is dumbed down to a point were it will be useless, and since the axe and the shield was always uselss, so we now having 5 conjured weapons that noone will use, and we already had the useless glyphs, were one got less cd which have no meaning since the pets are easy to kill, which means in the end ele now have 10 skills that most of us never use.

But thank you for that gloating message from the Arena net staff on the twitch stream, your gtfo message is noticed.

Surely you’ve noticed in your 6000 hours of play that Ele has been the top class in GW2 PvE for a while now. Ice Bow was crazy, did far too much damage, and had to nerfed for the upcoming raid encounters.

Returning from long hiatus - Balance Question

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Neko.9021

Neko.9021

Ok, so here’s the issue. GW2 consists of three entirely separate game modes – PvE, WvW, and PvP – and the considerations for each of these is totally different.

The other thing you must consider is that the Warrior has indeed received a few changes to its damage over the course of the game, mainly due to its initial huge popularity in PvE (4 Warrior 1 Mesmer lol) and its unpopularity in PvP.

The OTHER thing you need to know is that there are a lot of considerations that have to be made when people talk about certain situations in any of these game modes. The Warrior has low damage if you stack it against other classes in a spreadsheet or if you play under well-coordinated groups, in which case it’s basically a banner bot. But if you consider that the class has a large health pool, heavy armor, a strong passive heal with Healing Signet, and the ability to easily self-buff Might with Forceful Greatsword and Hundred Blades, then often you’ll find that Warrior will do much higher damage than most other classes in a PvE Dungeon PUG for a casual player piloting the game.

Simply put, to the average player playing the Warrior, yes, it does a lot of damage. In PvP, Hambow builds still do a lot of base damage with Soldier’s Amulet. In PvE, a typical GS/X Berserker build will still easily self-buff and do good damage compared to most other classes while still having a large health pool and heavy armor and Healing Signet. There’s a reason it’s still a very popular class to play and relax with – the class has a large margin for error and easily self-buffs to do well and do good damage.

Now, if you’re asking, at higher echelons of play, is the Warrior the super best? The answer is probably no. In PvE, the Elementalist can play a high-risk high-reward Berserker build that does quite a bit more damage with Staff spamming Lava Font, Ice Bow for burst, and Lightning Hammer for extremely high autoattack damage. The Elementalist has in many ways replaced the Warrior as the go-to damage class for super coordinated speed runs. Given that, many of those players still prefer to run casually on Warrior because quite frankly, it’s a lot less stressful with such high base defenses. In PvP the Warrior is still very very strong, but the Elementalist again has sort of eclipsed it with its re-powered, un-nerfed (they removed the nerfs to Cleansing Water and Signet of Restoration in PvP) D/D Spec, now equipped with Strength Runes and Celestial Amulet for even more tankiness and damage.

Also, the BIG thing that has changed with Warriors is that Warriors lose their adrenaline when they leave combat, and they lose it even on missing a burst attack. This severely cuts into the initial burst of Warriors at the start of PvE encounters who used to run around with a ton of initial Adrenaline for the Berserker’s Power bonus. In PvP, it means that they can’t open a fight with a burst skill and they’re forced into running Longbow even more now if they want to guarantee a cleanse, because using other burst skills risks losing your Adrenaline and thus your cleanse.

Basically, since you’ve left, Warriors got toned down a bit. Then, for PvE, people discovered Elementalist damage was really strong and made a bunch of high-damage builds. Then, for PvP, it got un-nerfed and now wreaks havoc in that game mode with the same boring overpowered triple-cantrip-water-arcana bunker build. It’s the best class in PvP and is in many ways the best class in PvE.

Pretty sure it’ll just be this:

http://dulfy.net/gw2traits#build=AgAE9AJkBaQ~

The interaction of Soothing Ice + Elemental Shielding will make it the best bunker spec.

Diamond Skin and Geomancer’s Training just seem like the most relevant traits in Earth. Rock Solid could replace Geomancer’s Training in that build.

Since Elemental Contingency is now a Minor Trait, we now take Elemental Contingency + Evasive Arcana as the Major traits. Renewing Stamina remains the standard choice at that tier.

Cleansing Water plus Cleansing Wave for maximum condi clear.

Basically, what Eles have been running since forever, plus more power creep.

Since GW2 isn’t a trinity MMO, the idea is to instead build your character for the content, taking as much damage, support, and control as you need individually.

In general, GW2 PvE content is both “fair” and “easy” enough that it’s possible to load up entirely on a highly damage-oriented build, and then either just burst things down quickly, or use proactive damage-mitigating skills like Wall of Reflection and Blinding Powder.

Mind you, there are so many things to consider when deciding what to play. For example, if you’re leveling, then you generally want to prioritize Mobility and quick Direct Damage.

For leveling an an Ele, I’d suggest a Dagger/Dagger Ele. You have some nice burst mobility skills, and Lightning Whip does quick, fast, cleaving damage. Staff is also decent but you mainly want to try and sit there and land all ticks of your lava font, which in my opinion, is more trouble than it’s worth. For leveling in the open world, it’s probably a lot faster to just cleave things down with the Air Attunement Auto Attack (the #1 skill) on Mainhand Dagger.

For leveling a Warrior, you have a few choices. Mainhand Sword may not do the damage of Greatsword or Axe, but it has so much mobility with its leap that it is a very effective open-world leveling weapon. For your second set, I’d go with Greatsword, because of the gap closers with the #3 and #5 skill.

You can use skills such as the GS #3 and #5 for a Warrior, or the Dagger 4 Air Attunement skill to travel a short burst of distance for quicker mobility. However, you should turn off Auto-Targeting in the options if you want to be able to do this. While you’re there, you should also turn off Melee-Attack Assist, so you can move through mobs while fighting them.

Overall, my biggest suggestion right now is this: build for high damage and mobility. The Warrior should use Offhand Warhorn to provide Swiftness, and take Signet of Rage for more Swiftness. The Ele might want to take Air Signet and maybe even Lightning Flash for movement speed and mobility as well (note that movement speed buffs do not stack, however). Build for Power/Precision/Ferocity gear. Both of you. There’s really no need, in open world, to go tanky gear, since mobs will just die so fast if you just build for the most damage you can. Th Ele can get a lot of good sustained damage by using the Air Dagger Autoattack, and the War can get great damage by using GS skills. For the Warrior, traits like:
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Slashing_Power
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Forceful_Greatsword
obviously go well with a Greatsword for a Warrior, while:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bolt_to_the_Heart
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Air_Training
go well with a Dagger for an Ele.

If using Staff instead, you can max damage by going:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Internal_Fire
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pyromancer%27s_Alacrity
And just spam Lava Font off cooldown, as well as using the autoattack on Fire attunement for Staff as well.

These are all simply suggestions, so no need for people to get personally hurt if they disagree with these as someone always seems to. I promise I’m not trying to hurt your feelings. Anyway, these are some build tips I’d suggest for a fast and pleasant leveling experience. Feel free to message me if you want any help, in game!

My engineer seems squishy...

in Engineer

All classes can feel kinda squishy. GW2 requires a very proactive style of play, not to mention that for many classes, your ability to survive depends heavily on taking certain utilities, weapon sets, and traits.

The primary defensive mechanisms of an Engineer, broadly speaking, are thus:
-Grenades = Grenades are the highest ranged DPS in the game, bar none. This means that, no matter the format, Engineers can stay in the back chucking grenades and having a rather heavy impact on the battle.
-Vigor and Swiftness = Engineers often trait for perma-Vigor and Swiftness through Alchemy I and Tools VI. Though one wouldn’t really think it, Engineers are one in the upper tiers for mobility, with the ability to move quickly and dodge a lot.
-Condition Builds = Engineers can build a strong Condition build. The distinct advantage of a Condition build is the ability to add in an inherent defensive stat on top of offensive stats. While a Direct Damage character must have Power, Precision, and Critical Damage in order to deal effective damage, a Condition build only really, akittens core, needs Condition Damage. For Engineers, they also want Precision for on-crit procs like the Firearms Adept Minor trait. Thus, Rabid gear is a great fit for Engineers.
-High inherent stats = Engineers have Medium HP and Medium Armor. Having played many other classes, that inherent bonus to stats is noticeable. Engineers aren’t really tanky, but they aren’t squishy either.

From there, Engineers also can have some decent outs. Elixir S in particular is a stunbreak and invulnerability all packaged into one.

The biggest issue with Engineer, by far, is its severe lack of access to utility slots. Almost every good Engineer dedicates at least one utility slot to a kit. Unlike other classes, Engineers effectively play with less utility slots that other classes often reserve for defensive purposes like stunbreaks or condition cleanses. Add to the fact that Engineers have some of the worst access to Stability in the game and you’ve got a class that’s highly vulnerable to hard CC.

Another issue is that Engineers don’t really have much in the way of easy cleave damage, unlike other classes. Thus, when roaming around in open world, when a bunch of mobs ball up and start attacking you, you can’t just pull out a Melee cleave weapon like a Sword and start slashing through multiple stuff at once. You’ve got:
-Pistol’s Auto, which honestly doesn’t do that much damage
-Rifle Auto, which while piercing, does not cleave in a cone
-Flamethrower Auto, which has surprisingly subpar damage
-Toolkit Auto, which actually isn’t awful in a full Berserker set, but other classes can do it better
-Bomb Kit, which deals pretty good damage but requires that you like the playstyle of Bombs
-Grenade Kit, which deals excellent damage but requires that you like the playstyle of Grenades

Ultimately, the Engineer can be sort of a hassle I find. It’s very much a class that requires you experiment with everything before really being able to use it well (which, to be fair, is very flavorful to the Engineer itself!). If you want the most straightforward answer in terms of sheer DPS, the answer is Grenades, but many people find them to be frustrating because you constantly need to click and aim every single attack. My suggestion would be to comb these forums for advice on good builds, and find something that you enjoy.

In a two Guardian three Warrior group, you can replace one of the Warriors with an alternate DPS class (DPS Guardian, LH Elementalist, Backstab Thief, Dagger Necro, Spotter Ranger, Grenadier Engineer) or a Mesmer for utility. Hell, you could replace two Warriors with two different DPS characters. Warriors are probably “the best” and some are considered to be worse than others, but if you really want to push a class to its limits while still being close to optimal, options exist for all the classes. The thing is, however, that after getting to high level FOTM (46+) and running lots of dungeons every day, you begin to realize that it’s just better to take some classes than others.

Personally I hope that other classes get things that Guardians have – group stability, projectile reflects, AoE pulls, area CC that isn’t Fear (since Fear pushes mobs away and thus works against trying to melee DPS cleave mobs down), once they start adding new skills, since right now, it’ true, high level FOTM basically mandates multiple Guardians to have a smooth run. And yes, the truth is Warriors are probably the only class you want in FOTM if you want smooth, quick runs. But it is possible for other classes to work within the system and still be helpful. But regardless of all of these things, playing a condition damage ranged character is NOT one of the ways to help contribute optimally. Especially one that tries to use Fear to control mobs when the optimal way to deal with groups is to pull them together in a ball, not to spread them out.

I think you should try to get yourself to FOTM 40+ and try to observe the things that contribute to a smooth run. You should also compare your own performace to the performance and kill times of others on youtube, and see what you could improve. Because right now, I can tell you that you have some well-intentioned but ill-informed opinions on how to run dungeons effectively. It’s not your fault. ANet put all of these interesting diverse ability sets on stuf like Necro Staff or Ele Staff, but in fact most of their abilities are better served in WvW or PvP. The issue is that GW2 implements a lot of archetypical game concepts from other RPGs, but implements them in such a way into such a system that they don’t work as well as they would in other games. A Ranged CCer who uses Damage over time effects in large AoEs is a staple of many games (I always loved to play this type of character), and it’s still very good in GW2 WvW. It’s just sorta bad for PvE Dungeons and Fractals as the game is set up.

Basically, look at Obal’s videos and Strife’s videos on youtube, and you will see what it means to do dungeons efficiently and effectively. When I do a dungeon, I try to emulate those tactics with my guild because I know that these tactics will not only make the dungeon run go faster, but will make it smoother and more enjoyable as well. And the truth is, non-FOTM dungeons can be done with something like Necro, Engie, Ranger, Thief, and Ele, and as long as you properly utilize projectile blocks, LoS, and Melee Stacking and Melee DPS, you should be able to get good fast dungeon runs.

Staff is clunky, slow, and has low damage. The first two make it bad in PvP, and the latter makes it bad in PvE.

This is a quick and simple guide to doing the Liadri encounter in the Queen’s Gauntlet event with a glassy Ele. While killing her with a bunker build is easier (I suggest a Condi Apothecary Ele if you’re going that route, which is what I did to do the 8-orb achievement), I thought it would be helpful to show how to do it on a glass cannon character, for those striving to improve their own personal skill.

Do people really get kicked for their builds?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Neko.9021

This is something that’s baffled me for a while. I’ve been playing GW2 since launch, and played in PUGs with all 8 of the classes. And not once in those years have I ever been kicked for playing a Necromancer or Ranger or whatever. I’ve never been kicked for wearing the wrong type of gear (mainly because people cannot check my gear anyway, and it’s easy to lie if I wanted to).

One rule I do have is to follow the requirements of the LFG. If the group only asks for a certain comp or gear or builds and I don’t want to follow the requirements of that LFG, I simply don’t join that group. And there is always another group ready to play that doesn’t have those requirements.

I play on NA, and these days, I’m fortunate enough that I have friends to do dungeons with. But on those random times I want to run something in a PUG and just feel like playing Necro, I’ve yet to ever get kicked for playing it. Or any other unpopular class.

I guess I just want to know other people’s experiences, mainly because it differs so radically from my own. I see these posts from players crying about how they can’t play what they want. However, I’ve seen plenty of players playing in what’s clearly a non-DPS setup (a Staff Camping Guard, a Bearbow Ranger, etc.), and not get kicked. Admittedly, my experience from launch to now is only one perspective and hardly indicative of the entire gaming population’s experience, which is why I turn to the forums and ask you all, have you or someone you known, experienced getting kicked from dungeons due to your build?

Frost Bow- What is the big deal?!

in Elementalist

Neko.9021

A lot of players use it because it was insanely strong during fights against objects in AC, and it stuck with them as a clutch utility weapon. In fact, it still kinda sucks outside of that one instance.

Also, there’s a Water tree trait that procs with Soothing Mist and Frost Bow, and so I suppose players take it because so many Eles spec heavily into Water with Mist Form.

In the end, I agree. It’s a pretty bad utility skill outside of certain (really, just one) parts of the game.

Put it ANYWHERE in the Air Tree short of being a Major Grandmaster Trait. But locking it so deep into the Arcane tree makes it very difficult for glass Ele builds to gain access to it.

Look up the price of Rune of Melandru.

14 gold at the time of this post.

The reason for this is that Runes of Melandru can only be gotten either by Mystic Forge or by taking them from gear from the Temple of Melandru.

Thanks to the new Wardrobe system, Melandru Runes cannot be extracted from armor from the Temple of Melandru any longer. You cannot use Transmutation Crystals to move them around like you used to be able to. It is almost impossible to take Melandru runes out of these pieces of gear now if bought with Karma, which has skyrocketed the price of Melandru runes tremendously.

Personally, I don’t use Melandru runes. I’m in a predicament where several of my characters have gear that was originally bought with Karma or WvW badges, and I now cannot remove the runes or move them around. I’ve got a ton of gold locked up in armor with no way to get them out.

There IS one way, of course – the Upgrade Extractor. But those are incredibly expensive.

There NEEDS to be a way to get Runes out of gear that was bought via karma or WvW badges. Even if it destroys the gear with no other pieces left other than the upgrades put inside, the effect this is having on the price of certain rune sets is crazy. And it’s locking a lot of us out of our own money if we put expensive runes into Karma/WvW gear.

Melee vs Ranged/Casters

Dagger Ele is Close-Ranged (closer to Melee than it is to a traditional far-Range Caster).

Have you seen dagger ele recently? I haven’t.

I play MH Dagger Ele in PvE.

In PvE you can play any set, any weapon, any build. Just what you like. But the fact is – scepter is better in all respects.

That isn’t true at all. Unless you’re using Scepter for Might Stacking and then using Lightning Hammer, the sustained damage of Scepter is completely awful. MH Dagger is a good general weapon of choice for Eles in difficult instanced content like Fractals:

[Point Breakdown] Ele's & Healing Power

Healing Ele is pretty darn OP. Just watch the last match of the NA ToL with KPz vs Apex Prime, and you’ll see just how strong the passive support Cleric’s Ele can give: http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/b/525879111

I think what’s important to realize is that the flow of damage in GW2 is different from other MMOs. It’s not a trinity game. You’re not going to get very far just camping Water Attunement and spamming its spells of CD. If you’re looking to play an Action-MMO with a Trinity-Healer, you should play Tera or Wildstar (both good games, btw). The Healer Elementalist is more about giving small burst heals when people need them, providing a TON of Healing over time (Regen + Soothing Wave is no joke), and giving support through all their boons and combo fields (such as Protection from Earth Attunement or providing important powerful Water and Fire Fields for team play). In WvW, we see coordinated zergs timing Water Fields at the right time, so that their allies can blast finish in them for sustained healing. And the Elementalist’s weapon sets provide a great mixture of Soft and Hard CC that really mess up players or allow you to control mobs.

With that said, I feel that full on Cleric’s Elementalist is best suited to sPvP and WvW, where your heals probably scale better to the kind of damage you receive. PvE is straightforward enough that you can just deck out your character in full damage gear and kill everything really fast, and because everyone has their own heals and ways to mitigate damage, there’s no need for a dedicated Healer. It’s still pretty strong in my opinion, it’s just not needed, and it’s not the kind of support that people want in the way people complete PvE content (which is do it as fast as possible). PvP Healer Ele is still, in my opinion, very viable and useful.

Thanks for asking about this, and again, we’re sorry for the mix-up.

This seems to happen a lot (it took a longer amount of time to get my WvW rewards from Season 2, for instance, and now I haven’t gotten the refund for this). I’m curious, is it just very difficult to send out things such as rewards or refunds on a massive scale?
