Seamless World - Part 1

in Living World

Posted by: Zietlogik.6208

Zietlogik.6208

Topic Length is maximum 5000 characters, so this will be a 2 Part series!

Let me just say that I DO enjoy the living world content, it just started out slow-burning and un-interesting, but lessons are being learned and things are picking up smoothly. BUT…the content is not being done in a way that aids players participation.

In reality we are faced with events we cannot participate in, and it leads to disappointment, this is true for games as well, but the main difference is we have the control to re-live these events.

So my first suggestion towards having a seamless world is the re-introduction of past events in a somewhat “random” but still plausible manner:

-

Subject 1: Meta-Stories + Rewards:

Similar to current Living Story events that appear on your event log for the duration of the event, these would be past (and maybe new ones created every so often for spice) events that have occurred that are 1-day occurrences that happen 1 or 2 times a week that last for 24-hours from its start.

Example: Flame and Frost dungeon – While exploring the world, this may trigger at 2pm Tuesday and last until 2pm Wednesday, and appear in your event log (globally) as “Remnants of the Molten Alliance have been spotted in Diessa Plateau and Wayfarer Foothills attempted to re-activate their facilities!”

This allows players to re-live the Flame and Frost dungeon arc while still not intruding on the world as if it doesn’t belong.

Along with the re-addition of this content, new randomized (but not crappy) rewards would be added to completing the dungeon allowing players to have a reason to re-live it.

Example: Flame and Frost Dungeon – Completing the dungeon will reward 25 silver + Karma + Exp + 1 Azurite Orb…..but may have a rare chance reward of one of the following: 1g -or- 5 Jugs of Karma -or- 1 Molten Ticket -or- Exotic Sentinels recipe or crafting material (insignia)

Adding these and various other new and old content additions that are sudden and scarce all around the world WILL get people to travel, it will get people to zones you normally don’t go to, it will get people together and moving.

-

Subject 2: Content/Patch Information

We all like to have this information, but one thing that can TRUELY take away from a seamless world feeling is that the events that are about to occur…are TOLD TO US BEFOREHAND!

We look at the GW2 website, we look at our achievement page, we know EVERYTHING that is going to happen before it happens! This is BAD (CAPS LOCK)

The way for something to have a proper impact on a player is for it to feel sudden, and feel organic when it is supposed to. Things like holiday events etc, we can be told this, this is fine.

But when in the middle of the event we find out someone gets assassinated, we know the target, and we know the group behind it….before it all happens, is awful! This does not feel organic, it does not feel alive, it feels fully and forcibly scripted and fake.

When we are attacked by some unknown force, we need to be attacked by an unknown force, NOT be told a day/week before that it will happen…that is how the emotion is created that drives the story forward, it is sudden, and it adds suspense.

the best example of this in GW would be back in GW1, when the War In Kryta began…we had no idea, we were in the dark, posters started appearing, shady figures started to appear….we were curious, and we were in suspense when it began, and most importantly we wanted to know (not be told), and GUESS, what would happen next!

-

Subject 3: Zone based events, and added mechanics

This is a tricky one, but I can think of an example to explain what I mean by this.

A zone where multiple “factions” or “races” exist that allow players to pick a side and participate in PvE/PvP hybrid events.

Example: Caeldon Forest – Event: The Nightmare Court has awakened a colossal Husk to terrorize the local populace!

When this event appears, players have the option to approach 2 NPCs that allow them to make a choice on who they aid. When a player chooses a faction they become PvP hostile towards those who choose the opposing faction (and only the ones who chose)

Nightmare Choice: A Husk has been summoned in Briarthorn Den, make sure it survives and aid it in destroying 3 nearby outposts!

Dreamer Choice: A Husk has been spotted leaving Briarthorn Den! Destroy it and defend any nearby outposts it assaults!

The reward for Success and Failure would be the same as any Group Event currently but both sides (whether you succeed or fail) will receive a special reward that is the same regardless. (this allows players to freely choose a side to play and still be rewarded the same to prevent team stacking/rolling) but still keep it challenging enough for the players even if they ALL decide to help one faction.

WvW build and weapons using knights armour.

It sounds like you are focusing on “tanking” with an unnecessary amount of Toughness, and thinking of adding vitality to one of the highest base HP classes in the game. You have decent power, a ton of toughness, and a good crit rating….but no crit damage (which is where your burst comes from without CC)

I am a little bit biased, but I like to actually hurt the things I want to hurt, rather than hit like a wet noodle and run away :P

Running Knight’s Gear with Melandru, with zerker trinkets and weapons (and ofc a variety of traits) you can get a balance. 3k attack, 3k armor, and roughly 45% crit chance (without fury) is what I am trying to maintain and balanced gear works well with a variety of builds.

But if you are going pure Toughness and just want to not die. You will want to focus more on sigils and traits to simply help you not die (because in the end you won’t be 1v1ing people in tank gear…cmon) and weapons that give you CC (Hammer, Shield, Mace, Sword)

GS is good for mobility, but unless you are building for at least SOME damage, it won’t help you much in that aspect, since it is a very critical based weapon (base damage be kitten ed). And since you are looking at running down the tactics line for shout heals, you are limiting yourself to a purely support role.

The value of toughness will start to fall off the more you actually get (since the ratios compared to other stats, means you will be getting less out of your stats in total) and adding Vitality also seems nice, but you start with an already high HP pool, it can feel like a wasted stat at times.

But in the end, it all comes down to your playstyle. I play my warrior as more of a bully, assassin style attacker. Get in and get into peoples faces until they start focusing on you, then get out to infuriate them….then come back in guns blazing when they focus on something else.

[Idea] Post-Raid Explorable Zones

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Zietlogik.6208

Zietlogik.6208

Currently we have a single raid, with I can only assume, plans on adding more.

My proposition: Turn previous raids into both explorable zones AND raid locations.

How would it work?: When a second raid is added, the events of the current raid (story wise) would be…older. And just like some events in guild wars 1, could be triggered manually instead in the world.

Once the next Raid is started (wing 1) the previous raid areas would become explorable zones, with their own events and enemies, just like the remainder of the HoT zones. And have an option (NPC, Book or Portal) that would turn it into the Raid instance.

All current/last added Raid areas would still remain as purely raid areas for the purpose of story/raid content until the main living world events or side story moves beyond it, which it will then become a persistent zone.

NOTE/tl;dr: This has nothing to do with allowing raid accessibility or experience to everyone, it is to use the assets in place to further expand the open world using the zone, and adding new events, enemies and places to explore once the living story moves beyond the Raid’s timeline.

Seems like some of the NPCs in Wayfarer Foothills are non responsive.

In particular the Sons of Svanir who had pre-defined animations (sitting, lying down, etc.)

Do NOT attack back at first, in fact, they back pedal away from you with no combat at all, then start fighting a few seconds later.

I have never even seen a non-player backpedal before, it seems to be completely new tech/AI behavior.

Perhaps to be utilized in new AI function to move out of AoE or dodge attacks?! (that would be fantastic)

I will provide video proof if it is needed, easy to replicate though. But if asked, I shall make a quick clip.

With it arriving on the 10th, how many people are happy about this new (I am assuming) grind?

Will it be something you work towards? Is it a step in the wrong direction in terms of time investment/enjoyment, or welcomed?

Will you work towards the armor due to aesthetics? Does the design encompass what you would expect of the “high-end” gear treadmill? (Judging by the image posted on the preview page, the armor itself looks lackluster, and imo kinda stupid >.>)

What is your estimation on the overall % for the power creep that will be introduced with this new tier of gear?

and finally: Do you believe this will be the final tier of gear that will be introduced? Or is there speculation that a tier for Legendary, and perhaps even a seperate new tier will be introduced later on in the game’s life?

Replace out of the way Veteran/Champions with new Named mobs with a special ability or 2, increase rewards from their deaths and add a new Bounty system (similar to GW1)

Bounty System: Each major city (inc LA) will have a bounty board, which contains 3 bounties (changes daily) these mobs are out of the way Veteran/Champion creatures all across Tyria which will now be Bounty Enemies (similar to rare-spawns), with unique names and some stronger abilities.

Add some little reward (ex: War In Kryta style system) and it will add a new layer to world exploration to those who are leveling, and new challenges to those who are 80 and have been everywhere.

What if we saw the gladiatorial arena from the GW books come back?! And we could have grand brawls in the center in Lion’s Arch for players to bet on!

They have cleared out nearby housing etc. around the outside and can build raised areas around the perimeter for players to watch the battles, pathways around the main level around the area could be made for passers by.

2 Greens for Rank 1000... seriously?

in WvW

Posted by: Zietlogik.6208

Zietlogik.6208

If ranks were actually difficult or worthwhile to try to obtain…then sure.

I see that EotM minimap and…its basically free loot for filling a bar, for running around capping things which gives more free loot, while zerging mobs that give free loot….in a zone build for free clockwise free loot…

Wait a second….

I want better gameplay, not more effing handouts, this is laughable to complain about really.

You clearly don’t understand the issue at hand, which is completing a task that takes Months to complete ( Talking WvW,not the pve champtrain thats called Eotm ) and his reward for doing this was 2 greens. When completing such tasks the reward should be of more significance and not based on RNG random drops you can find anywhere else.Every other Mmo out there understands this,Anet on the other hand does not and keeps handing out rewards, simple or hard based on RNG,and you might end up getting nothing but greens. You might end up getting a better reward for something that takes 30m to complete opposed to what the OP described..a thing that takes months to complete and end up with..a green, which is simply wrong.

You clearly didn’t understand what I said then. Getting X rank is not a task, it is something that progresses naturally by completing other smaller tasks. These smaller tasks provide loot, and after completing several of these tasks (did I mention they give loot?) you get extra loot because a little bar filled.

People complaining about this, cannot possibly know how to weigh reward to effort, they value their time far more than they value their capabilities, that is the fundamental flaw with the reward system.

If Ranks had some challenge, or feat of skill involved…like I said in my post, sure, the rewards should be better….but its extra loot on top of loot you get for completing things that add to that blue bar….that is it.

Seamless World - Part 1

in Living World

Posted by: Zietlogik.6208

Zietlogik.6208

Subject 4: Personal Story, world interaction.

This is a touchy subject, but I believe alongside a players personal story, there should be situations where the story actually takes place in the seamless world, allowing other players and themselves to interact and alter the world while it is in progress.

This can be a difficult one to work out, but I will try an example to clarify:

A player reaches a part in their personal story where they need to find a relic located in some old ruins guarded by pirates, with some jumping puzzles and trap scattered around. A dynamic event would kick off that cause the pirates to locate themselves around the ruins while the player with the story needs to get in, and get the relic.

Other players who happen to be in the area may come and aid them, as well as other dynamic events may cross-over and effect the players experience of their story, making for a more living and interesting situation as it happens. Perhaps a krait invasion occurs as the player is approaching and suddenly the pirates and krait are in conflict allowing the player to slip in, but may overwhelm the pirates and take the ruins as their own.

-

Subject 5: WvW (guild claiming….not exactly living story)

Yep, I am going there, this is just something that is becoming a stigma for alot of players. “Is it PvE? Is it PvP? Why are there NPCs? thats lame”

The seamless and constant battles of WvW are a wondrous addition to GW2, but there always seems to be something missing, and it suddenly becomes a monotonous feeling of zerg v zerg, or empty servers being spawn locked.

There are many ways that WvW is amazing, but there could be more. more customization, more confusion, more everything.

The maps are bland, so when nothing is going on, all you see is air, and open space. This will probably never change regardless of how much I would love there to be gank routes, proper canyons, caves, tunnels, dense forest and hills to promote ambushes and small group roaming….but alas.

Something that COULD fill up that space, is player chosen additions.

From various control areas (Garrison, keep, SM, camps, etc.) there would be a variety of options a GUILD could choose to change the battlefield. Examples:

From a camp: A guild can choose to set up guard towers and small walls to “fortify” a camp location, rather than simply pumping guard levels up, or adding a few patrols. Purchasing them as upgrades from the appropriate NPC, they would provide you with an item similar to a siege weapon, you can place on the ground (restricted to the camp, and nearby area, as well as restricted by the amount placed)

From a Keep/Garrison: A guild can purchase a “1/2 way point” that replaces a nearby Sentry with a guard post, providing walls, and multiple guards and patrols to a Dolyak’s route 1/2 way to the camp for added defense, and causing the route to become more treacherous for enemies.

From a Tower: A guild can purchase assault groups to locations that will send a wave of NPCs to an area for an attack for a fee (similar to mercenary groups)

From Stonemist: A commander can purchase 2 things: A.) An NPC army of roughly 20 (8 veterans, 11 regular mobs, 1 champion) who charge a selected keep until killed.

B.) A large mobile airship, that acts as a low flying destroyable waypoint when it reaches its destination and comes to a stop/hover. Players can wreak havok on enemies below with cannon and mortar fire, or simply ranged weapons.

Players will need to defend the airship until it reaches its resting point (just outside the outer gate of an enemy keep). Once it arrives, it stops and becomes a waypoint (contestable when being attacked, as well as destroyable) for allied players to get to the battlefield quickly if the front gate is secured by your server and the airship is not under fire.
————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

So those are my ramblings for the day….have a good day everyone!

League Reward Structure

in PvP

Posted by: Zietlogik.6208

Zietlogik.6208

You know what makes non-progression based PvP games work so well? 9/10 they are fun to play. The problems facing sPvP right now:

  • The gamemode is incredibly stale
  • Power creep has ruined any semblance of balance
  • The previous progression system (rank 1-80) has been so trivialized that it isn’t even noticable anymore, and has 0 meaning.

What makes some other PvP games work? And how can GW2 improve on them?

  • Balance (the biggest, most important issue to any competetive pvp game, along side gameplay)
  • Gameplay, the combat is excellent in GW2, but with the cluster!$@# of particle effects, power creep and lackluster game modes to play tend to bring it down. It doesn’t even feel like you are playing anymore, you just mash a ton of AoE skills on point and hope for the best.
  • Cosmetics, before leagues this was slightly true, with the Glorious armor sets, but that is a single set of armor for non-hardcore PvP players to go for. GW1 had an excellent system where you could slowly unlock a wardrobe of skins from PvP using tournament points. (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/PvP_reward) The thing is…when you get the look that you WANT, the game has to be fun to play so you can enjoy it more, playing Dressup and going afk will only take you so far.
  • Side progression, classes should have some side-progression tracks you can achieve in PvP with classes, which accumulate into a grand rating (kinda like LoL champion mastery)
  • Gamemodes, multiple if possible, but at minimum one that has a clear FUN goal to achieve (Sorry Devs, 500 point borefest is NOT a fun victory condition) Stronghold has the right idea, but shoved too much PvE elements into the mix that players can abuse (ele/druid breaker/lord healing anyone?). Players should have the bare minimum actual interaction with NPCs possible. Imagine if you could heal and res/move the Nexus in LoL?
  • More maps, variety is the spice of life, but all in all, you wouldn’t need more maps if the gameplay was the primary focus, that kinda needs to get fixed first. But having some map effects that are not NPCs would make for a good start, something even akin to Wards and Bushes from various mobas.
  • Solo Q, Team Q, and Guild Q, these should be the 3 primary settings. Hotjoin is practically dead, and Spectator mode was the final nail in the coffin, so these 3 should be the new “go-to”.
  • Spectating, rework the current server browser to be a spectator browser instead, listing the current Ranked matches (diamond or above?) being played (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Observer_mode) but with a delay. Also allow players to select “Spectate match” from right-clicking friends to view their non-ranked games as well. Add a separate tab in the same window for custom servers (hotjoin/player-made) so players can still have those rooms available.

Ideas for some other gamemodes? Well looky here: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Player_versus_Player

Things like TDM with side objectives, GvG, Capture the Flag (remove player skills on pickup), Kill Count, Tug-o-war, Annihilation mode, etc.

GW1 has several gamemodes, and 2 of them were beyond fun, GvG, and HoH (although elitism ruined it)

tier 2 in fun was RA and Alliance Battles and Fort Aspenwood and Jade Quarry

final tier was Team Arenas and Hero Battles, which were very niche gamemodes that some people had fun with, but not the majority.

Our current gamemode is more in-line with Hero Battles in my opinion, and we need this to change.

People play e-sport games not for progression, but for the fun and challenge of it. Starcraft 2, League of Legends etc. players can have everything unlocked, but still play for the fun of it (just like we have now)

So obviously all that is missing is a game-mode (and balance) that people ENJOY PLAYING

-not about RNG at all o.O

- The red circles arent really hard to see, camera angles make it harder, but the circles themselves aren’t an issue

- The adds stand still for a few seconds after they spawn, like I said, W,A,S,Ds

- The crystals have nothing to do with luck….they spawn when the enemy hits the white field…that is the opposite of luck, you are controlling its spawn o.o

- 6 accounts? i’m sure you mean classes…and I’ve done the same, this has nothing to do with anything, it sounds like an excuse.

- You don’t have to change the graphics, it just removes that effect, it is still possible with the effect. It is just like the drunk effect in GW1, it is simply handled by the post-processing. Now you just sound angry, calm down and think about what you are saying before you hit the enter key.

- Phase 2 has a pattern, it is North/South, then West/East in an hourglass shape….you literally just have to run in a circle around the arena to avoid it. And Phase 1 is slow enough and gives you the safe-zone that it shouldn’t be an issue.

- The adds again, move pretty slow, get destroyed by the white field (still appearing btw) and the cripples are annoying…but if you know the pattern, even with cripple you can avoid it, and even mitigate by using ranged.

You think it is poorly designed because you are simply adding your personal opinions, like many others, these are suggestions, but you are treating them as if they are requirements. You simply bash the creators for making something you haven’t mastered yet, this is not the way to go about it….if it was actual impossible that would be a different matter.

Please proof-read your messages and try to avoid the callouts and blatant bias trying to defend your claims. I am telling you how you can try and finish this, but you are taking it the wrong way and refusing to adapt.

The challenge in the battle is that it will punish panicking and punish mistakes, you have to focus and know what you are doing, or else a mistake will end you….that is the nature of a challenge.

If anything practical, the orbs should be removed for Phase 2….that I will also agree with (if it were on your list to begin with)

I am trying to lead a few friends through the starter zones and I feel I might lose them from the game at the current rate.

I directed them to a Vista and they asked “Are these supposed to be on my map?”

They walked up to a communable skill point and asked “what is it?”

They wanted to know how to craft, so I tried to direct them to a merchant that would sell them salvage kits and gathering tools….apparently you can’t even SEE the tools/kits in the merchant without being sufficient level?! WHAT?!

They also thought that dancing for cows was “incredibly stupid”

Make it function like Planetside 2…invisible while stationary, with a faint outline/effect while moving.

Or make it like other games, non-time limit stealth, slower movement speed, can be detected in very close range. Unable to re-stealth in-combat unless using a long CD “o shi-” skill.

OR….have it so you can stealth like you can right now, remove revealed, but have it drain 1 initiative a second. Unable to gain initiative passively while in stealth (traits/skills would still work)

Canadian retailers? Non-existent

Ok so first gripe:

There is no Canada option when searching for the retailers….so I used US

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/retailers/#UnitedStates-physical

-Under Digital Download-

Then the majority of retailers do not even carry Guild Wars 2!

EBgames, Amazon.ca and GameTap have no records of Heart of Thorns, DLgamer (the only site with HoT listed) will not accept any credit cards from me (canada based)

The crap guys?!

Why are you playing this game? Don’t play wildstar, too. Same company.

They have terrible balance for classes..did you see the new mesmer heal? Have fun giving anet your money.

ArenaNet = Guild Wars
Carbine Studios = Wildstar

TOTALLY the same company….

If you are thinking of NCsoft…you don’t understand publishers….that is like saying EA made Command and Conquer…

i cant find any SF or HoD that will put up a decent fight without allies or guards to help them and when its 5vsme I get chased across the entire map.

where da fighters at?

I had this happen to me earlier today ;p

lol troll a group with GS mobility, kill a ranger and necro, then kill a ranger and some uplevels while they are under cannon/AC fire, then more uplevels.

the only level 80s you killed outside of siege fire were the ranger/necro that clearly weren’t great.

that’s always fun but I wish you’d have run into me instead of them >.<

That’s why it is called trolling…I am just pestering a group, and having a laugh…btw pay attention to the color of that tower with the cannon…its not mine either(SF = Red, kitten)

Best part is that it is the SAME ranger, every time lol (Send that ranger some gold so he can buy a better connection! :P)

GJ being a debbie downer though, have a laugh every once in a while you tryhard!

Energy System

Zietlogik.6208

You’re talking about completely overhauling one of the games basics systems. It honestly doesn’t matter if your suggestion is perfect in every way, you are literally describing a new game.

I am describing GW1

And they originally had energy in their system, they just iterated it out.

Why couldn’t anet give you something like this with the guild upgrades??? Beside the bs upgrade system they did and all the tactics kitten…

The guild upgrades system could have been better if it wasn’t so gated behind a bunch of meaningless guild grind.

Energy System

in PvP

Posted by: Zietlogik.6208

Zietlogik.6208

When I first heard about the lack of energy system in GW2 I was surprised and kinda glad, it simply made the combat faster.

But after playing with that for a year, I have realized this is a core reason the PvP in this game is failing.

Without a system in place to prevent players from spamming skills on cooldown, it creates a storm of abilities being thrown around without any rhyme or reason, it is just….spam

With cooldowns and energy, this made it so your choice in skills mattered when you used them, or else the consequences would start weighing in your opponents favor when you start draining your own energy and putting key skills on cooldown.

I think in order to return to stable form of combat there needs to be these kinda of restrictions in place for skills.

What would combat be like if:

-Dodge had a cooldown and was not tied to endurance (10 second cooldown for example)
-Skills now used endurance, and the endurance UI would be modified to give more information on its amount and usage. Similar to energy/mana in similar titles.

Please try and prevent overly negative feedback.

I will make a video, for those who did not play GW1, a lot of this is already in full concept.

The announcement information was seen when you login (not in a launcher), and was also available in-game from NPCs. The HUD was fully customizable and there were just much more freedom given to player in regardless or how they accessed information about the game, and how they viewed it. Oh and they had a further back camera zoom which was also awesome >.>
