Where are “Guild Wars” in Guild Wars 2?
Can’t find them,
there is not even a guild tag shown in the gw2 ladders.
Is there any button, i can challenge other guilds in spvp to show off my guild is the best?
Ps. I want my gold cape!

Guild Wars 2 is so named because it’s the sequel to Guild Wars.

Guild Wars was called such for two (probably related) reasons.

  1. Guilds played a much larger role in PvP, particularly in guild battles (“GvG”). Calling the game “Guild Wars” described the central focus of the game’s PvP scene.
  2. A very obscurely mentioned (and practically insignificant) piece of lore was the “Guild Wars,” which ended at the very beginning of the first chapter of the game. It had very little bearing on anything that happened in the story of any part of the games, and if the player never heard of the “Guild Wars” in the game’s lore, nothing would be lost.

Personally, I think the lore was probably written in to justify naming the game for a PvP feature. To support my theory, I postulate that a handful of NPCs mentioning the event is insufficient reason to name the entire franchise after it. Otherwise, they would have named it something like “Chosen,” a term which actually became important in the storyline. Calling it “Guild Wars,” though, meant any RPG fan would know what it was about— one group of players competing against another.

The guild functionality of the first game was very different. Only one guild could be joined at a time, there were no guild buffs, and guild missions hadn’t been invented yet; however, guild battles and guild halls gave us options that are currently nonexistent.

Regardless, the name has been set and can’t easily be changed. Only the game can be changed to fit the name, but that probably isn’t a priority at this time. (It’s encouraging to see Josh’s comment above, though.)

The lore is the entire foundation of the story…and the reason the world exists as it does…

Best Two-Handed Sigil Combinations?

I’ve actually used Sigil of Fire and Air on my greatsword and it is actually really strong.

Yeah thats fun if they both proc at the same time while landing a burst that also crits.Fire + Air is a pretty strong combo for dpsing.Purity + Generosity will also become a really strong combo,for cleansing that is.

I thought there was a shared internal cooldown between all on-proc sigs and on-swap sigs so that you couldn’t have the situation above take place. (i.e., proccing the air sig would cause both the air and fire sigs to go on cooldown.) Its been a while since I’ve tested or read up on this so it may have changed since then.

this last patch removed shared cooldowns, the ones that share are 2 of the exact same sigil (2x Fire)

the reason is simple, if you can determine which one is best by simply making 2 opponents dueling each others then just figure out its result, it ruins game itself actually. if you are game creator you probly dont wanna making your game look cheap by makinh dueling arena so people can find fastest way to conquer the game balance design & system itself. it should leave something abstract and undeterminable to make customer play the game longer i mean. Anet need to ban all custom dueling arena to make game their game valuable.

Idk, i just feel in this way if i try to think abkut why anet dont make dueling arena. but well do League of legend, the most famous & selling esport, have dueling arena as well?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: The players are in control of the dueling servers, not Anet, they purchased the tokens, they get to choose how the arena works. Anet did not create anything related to dueling yet, it is all player made.

And on top of all that, you want them to BAN the players who are giving them a source of income? good luck with that buddy…

I can’t help but feel like one of the reason the PvP community isn’t growing as fast as it could be, is because of the complete lack of proper instructions on how PvP differs from PvE.

SO MANY TIMES I have seen players running the default build (usually zerker…wtf are you devs thinking throwing new players on zerker builds in the first place!) and just not getting into PvP because the quick time to kill and lack of tutorial are offputting to them as they are trying to learn the game.

and first and foremost you need to give new players instant and easily accessibly ways to change their build. There is NO default keybind for PvP build window, the default builds are unacceptable and most players don’t actually realize their build in PvP is different that other game modes, noone pays attention to the “hint” popups" and it leads to players just jumping into matches and getting annihilated and then quitting.

Make it available to que from any zone, but when leaving that zone you would be removed from queue. Just like certain zone buffs that are removed upon loading a new map.

This isn’t rocket science, you guys can actually think these things up right?

- No queue available from inside personal story or dungeon instances.
- Queue available from all open zones, removed from queue when changing maps.
- Queue window takes priority over map/scout/etc. screens.
- Queue remains active inside Practice Match spvp rooms.

Achievements are quests if you look at them that way. You can go out and beat 100 events for your monthly right now if you want to, OR you can put that to the back of your mind, and play the game. Achievements will come to you if you just play, or you can grind them out like quests, if that’s what you WANT to do.

That simply further proves that these are NOT achievements…they are a lesser form of quest…you can’t say that in other games you can’t finish a quest by doing other quests nearby as well. That just happens, but the way it is delivered in GW2 it is just tacked on.

Yes you can grind or just do the events while doing other things….how is that an achievement? having it handed to you for playing the game is definitely not the way to go. The fact that I can finish my monthly in 2 days (have done it for the past 3 monthlies) accidentally, not grinding, or anything makes it feel pitiful and worthless as a game feature (not the rewards…rewards are nice :P)

They need achievements to be ACTUAL achievements, and have the other things split into their own separate category, with its own separate rewards…maybe have a “Mundane task” panel that gives you bits of copper and stuff for completing them…that is our current achievement system.

We also need the return of “missions” ala GW1, these were all events that told you the lore and story of the game, not your personal story…that is its own thing, we need the story of the WORLD.

I would like to say that the current events are very…uneventful, they don’t tell you anything, they just have you helping the farmhand collect apples and getting kittens out of trees….adding on top of that the “achievements” of doing a bunch of these just feels repulsive, repetitive and boring. You don’t learn anything and you bairly do anything, yet the game and devs want you to do these over and over, more and more, ad nauseum with no real rhyme or reason.

"Competitive Casual" Gameplay Options

Thanks for the post infantrydiv. Your take on the situation is incredibly insightful and well thought out. I really appreciate your constructive feedback on where the game is and where it should go to accomodate players at all levels.

Do you feel that Solo Arena has any benefit to a player for learning how to play as a team?

Solo Arena does not, I have learned a few things about team play and rotations in SoloQ, but it wasn’t from the game, it was from the other players. This is where the game falls short, it doesn’t teach anything.

And with the objectives so singular, it is harder for a team to actually play together, since the gamemode currently defines having everyone split apart.

The most important thing for a team right now in GW2 sPvP is communication, where players are moving, where help is needed. It outshines actual teamwork, and players cohesively working together in-game and with eachothers classes.

Having all 5 players playing as their own solo entities and being good at that singular role is what works well in soloq, not teamwork.

A decap eng, bunker guardian or a single roamer pushing onto points changes the battle. You just have to know where on the map to outnumber your opponent and move there quickly. (and there are only 3 points on the map that needs to happen [see: conquest])

This is what makes it so much less competitive than let’s say: League of Legends.

Each person has to play their role, then each of those roles are combined into a team.

Currently in GW2 there are no roles needed by the game other than “hold a capture point”

Whereas in LoL, that is how the start of the game is, but each tower is a point, the dragon is a point, baron is a point, both red buffs are points, both blue buffs are points, every part of the map is utilized, and moving around as a team without vision is vital.

It is very hard to say what would need to be added to make sPvP competitive, but in its current state, it definitely falls under “Casual”

You don’t need to know anything about sPvP when jumping in, you see points, that’s it. You learn about playing your class, as well as fighting others while playing sPvP, it feels more like a mini-training ground to the basics of combat, rather than a competitive environment.

And this is especially true in HotJoin, where most people play for kills and combat, rather than playing the objective in the first place.

I say the more control the player has in the group creation, augmented by an in-game system, the better it would be. Auto-groupers are good for lazy people, but having more control can simply create a more enjoyable experience for everyone (unless you are an elitist who only wants r9’s in their party, but they pay the price of waiting a long time to create one)

I’ve been running this build since season 1, and it has gotten me to legendary each season so far (except 4, i skipped 4) and it has only gotten buffed since then (most recently axe buffs)

With the amount of DH running around right now, this build is actually quite capable of taking on most DH builds 1v1 on side nodes and aid in team fights with multi-hit attacks combined with blind and aoe daze, with enough sustain to survive unless focused by 3+ constantly.

Having Locust swarm or Nightfall up on point means you will be stripping aegis and blinding attacks to help land some crucial slow casting abilities, while also benefiting from Chill uptime and Might generation which improves your sustain mid-fight. Any multi-hit attacks can proc Chilling Victory and bypass its cooldown as they count as a “single-attack/skill”

Nightfall, Locust Swarm, Death Spiral, Ghastly Claws, Death’s Charge and Soul Spiral are all instrumental on maintaining Might, removing Blind and stripping Aegis while still landing damage which leaves openings for Executioner’s Scythe and Garsping Darkness.

Wail of Doom bypasses all blocks and can be used to effectively remove Eles from any overload but Earth, Rev shield 4, Mesmer shield 4, Guardian Shelter, etc. and prevent stomps and resses when combined with stripping stability with Axe 3 or passive procs.

Even though “Nothing can save you!” is rather strong, I opted to go with instant cast shouts, because not only do they cleanse conditions from myself, they can be combined with other skills to quickly burst a target or group when needed.

Using Rune of the Trooper (soldier) gives us a tiny bit more tankiness when running Marauder’s amulet, and gives us sustain and condi cleanse combined with reaper traits.

EDIT: Now using Paladin amulet and Chilling Nova over Augury of Death.

Players are never directed to the training grounds either, or taught about some of the basics of sPvP…most new players I end up helping out don’t even know there is a build window or how to change it…THIS IS HUGE

~First thing is first, please give the PvP build window a default keybind! I don’t know how this has slipped the dev’s minds for so long, but for the love of balthazar, set it to a keybind for players and let them know what button it is. ~

Result: The most kittening infuriating match I have ever played….I am sure the 1 year span it will take for the programmers to remove the map and fix the CC issues in the game, then it will still not be worth playing.

knowing your matchups and how your build aids your team is the most important part of power necro in sPvP. So it depends on your build, what you want to accomplish in on the map, and know what to stay away from in the cluster-!$ of a midfight.

You are priority #1 at the start of a match because you have 0 life force, so expect to get jumped if you run into mid without a plan.

I kinda want to write up a compilation thread of all the stuff in the reward tracks that needs to be fixed, one way or another. So far I’ve got:

- No in-game notification of hotjoin progress limit
- Incorrect labelling of chest at end of reward track
- Unique “skins” are actually unique SKINS when they would be better off as actual exotic weapons

Make sure you include the fact that the item chests can actually contain whites and greys (trophy items in spvp? really?!)

Thing about GW1, was the community was small, and they were trying to impress people with what they could create.

Now they have so much money coming in left and right, they have become lax and more than likely don’t care much anymore about impressing their playerbase.

They built a game they want to play, and now they sit back and suffer from EA syndrome while the gem store prints money for them and NCsoft.

I would love to see multitudes of weapons and skills added for each class, new mechanics, refine old mechanics. But after 2 years, I don’t think we will see any of it.

Bazaar…because:

1.) It had a well designed vertical zone worth exploring, that didn’t punish the player with mobs everywhere.
2.) Plenty of instanced and non-instanced story elements that were enjoyable to experience.
3.) interesting items to try and obtain (backpieces were nice…helmets were odd)
– Note: That they were not pigeonholed Gemstore cashgrabs like the current ones either.
4.) Activites with new mechanics and enjoyable atmosphere.

Game start position reset

I am not entirely sure why they changed it. It also causes some bugs, and doesn’t always trigger for people outside the spawn area, or fully reset they status.

I had a warrior on my team fighting and use vengeance before match start, and it killed him as the gates opened due to lack of reset. It was on skyhammer, not sure if they are different between maps, but that may have caused the bug, who knows.

My opinion though, they should revert it, to me it feels more natural for all players to reset to the waypoint for the 10 second countdown, it feels a little off now.

Weakness effectiveness as damage reduction

I’m not going to comment on the math, but I would like to say that weakness is fine, and moreover we need more effects like it.

To many of this game’s active defenses are just straight damage negation which leads to extremely binary combat. We need less invulns and more partial mitigation effects like weakness and protection.

We have plenty for physical damage already, even in stats with toughness/armor, boons like protection, and conditions like weakness, but not enough of these modifiers for condition damage. The only real option is either Resistance boon or removal.

The title of the game is lore based to the war that went on in Tyria among the kingdoms/guilds….it never had any direct link to GvG.

A few things to note:

  • Autobalance will more than likely take people who joined the server late/last as the people it chooses.
  • Autobalance as a popup gives you the opportunity for a free Win reward + bonus for clicking the Volunteer button
  • Volunteer follows the same properties as autobalance, and selects the latest person to join. (If multiple players hit Volunteer)
  • Autobalance is much less likely to occur after 1 team has hit 400 points.

In such moments i would love to take refund and lost time on this game…

Lighting and Shadows

Not exactly Living world “content” but content that makes the world feel more alive…

The lighting and shadows are in dire need of an upgrade in terms of immersiveness.

Day and Night cycles come suddenly, since we have no semblance of a sunrise or sunset. No Orange, no Red, no extended shadows or light from an acute angular sun when setting/rising.

We have very basic light modification when entering/exiting caves, but this needs a slight improvement as well, but only slightly, since light refractions and reflections are not taken into account when light enters a cave/tunnel/etc.

Just a simple suggestion to get the “living” back into the world.

Yes, that is the thing, the maps that have the option to volunteer, are the ones that are being refreshed/dead and need to be removed.

I too, noticed that you avoided mentioning the fact that stealth (and vanish) expire after a short time (with the exception of Prismatic Understanding buffed stealth which I argue should never have existed).

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!#$$ there are SOOOO MANY ways to chain stealth it’s not even funny the fact each stealth skill only give you a short period of stealth is meaningless .

There is alot of meaning, stealth in games like WoW dont even really use a skill, it is just a profession button you hit and you are in stealth. GW2 you need to use your combos, you need to use skills, utilities, you need to specc for it, it isn’t just something that is available to every build a thief has freely, you need to put some effort into being stealthed for longer periods of time…and even then, very very rarely perma.

It reminds me of the RPGs I grew up on, Legend of Zelda is a big one for this (it reminds me of Wind Waker on so many levels)

Area is designed beautifully, scavenger hunt is enjoyable, the movement abilities make everything more interesting in terms of jumping puzzles.

The freedom of movement (go where you want) is such an amazing tool to an explorer type such as myself

They could give it the same treatment as the new Guardian trap, or hammer ring on guardian, it could create a burning wall of rock that traps foes inside and burns them if they touch it.

I got it done yesterday by accident, didn’t even know it was on the daily list, and was only in WvW for about 1 1/2 hr with some friends camp flipping and taking sentries…

What exactly is the complaint about? that it is too HARD to get?!

Please…grandmaster traits are not exactly lacking for the majority of classes. Elite skills on the other hand, we do not even have a handful of that aren’t race specific or actually useful.

The new system for searching/hunting for Grandmaster traits should have been used for finding new elite skills tbh (ala GW1) which would have a far greater impact overall for players builds and combat.

Hopefully in the future, being able to choose our weapon skills, and creating our own builds will actually be a thing as well, one can only hope.

Uh…this is Fractals.

There are no Waypoints…

There are Checkpoints that are unlocked based on the group’s progress, but given the short distance covered by this map, I don’t even see that being necessary.

You can only revive at a checkpoint when the entire party is dead and/or out of combat.

There is no initial Checkpoint…if you die, that’s it, you have to relog, there is no checkpoint

Solo end-game could include things such as: Liadri style combat, Personal Story style missions (including AI armies / team), mini-game mechanics tests such as the crystal hunt in the Labyrinthian Cliffs.

5-man end-game could include things such as randomized 5-man dungeons (not fractals) with objective based gameplay rather than Point-A-to-Point-B, Boss encounters, 5-man triggered Dynamic Events (similar to how Siegerazor works in WvW).

Open-World end-game could include things such as smaller scaling versions of the Wurm, Marionette, world bosses (noone likes zerging…its boring), large-scale PvEvP hybrids, PvE dungeon/fortress assaults/defense.

A personal note, I would like many of these to contain a barrier of entry of some sort, to prevent the mass zerg mentality.

Since the old one was locked due to a necromancer bringing it back….I figure since it is still actually relevant and also valid, I shall repost for the purpose of discussion.

Commander UI: A map/UI window that allows commanders to view all sub-commander’s locations and their nearby allies and enemies via map dots (same radius as normal player range) as well as placed siege of all types (icons for siege will be displayed on the map)

The commander UI will allow the commander to view any supply currently located in any server owned towers/keeps/camp/etc. on the UI screen. (Ex. Location Name – Supply:125)

Custom waypoint markers and path markers will be given to the commander and will be displayed on the map and mini-map of any sub-commanders, with an option to be displayed to all, or specific sub-commanders.

Some markers may include:
Arrows for directional guidance
“No Symbol” for halting movement to certain zones or areas, or localize movement
Stars/Diamonds/Circles/Squares for team stacking/movement
Unique siege icons to pinpoint locations for siege placement such as ballistae/trebuchets/catapults.
Custom icons for hotspot identification or reinforcement routes.
Shield icons for defense locations

Commanders will be able to also directly use the Draw feature on the Ui map and will be shown to all active/or specified sub-commanders.

A side-bar on the window will also display the number of sub-commanders/other commander locations on the other maps for WvW uses (ability to see how many sub-commanders are located in each borderlands + EB listed in the window)

Sub-commanders (current commander system): Current commanders will be now labeled as sub-commanders, with the ability to access and alter their commander icon to various shapes and colors to help keep themselves locatable among other sub-commanders (one may have a pink star, another may have a green circle)

The color chosen will also determine their chat name color when using a new commander chat (similar to Team chat) allowing players to identify specific commanders orders directly in chat. They will also have the ability to place custom waypoint markers that can be directly linked into chat for pinpoint team movement.

Commander: This will now be a position limited to 1 per map and have direct contact with all sub-commanders, view all members within sub-commanders squads as well as their supply counts, and access to a new custom UI (see above). The position will require a new pre-requisite to become a commander.

With the influx of gold into the economy, the numbers of commanders have risen considerably, as well as the confusion associated with new commanders in both WvW and PvE environments. Limiting the “high tier” commander to 1 per map, and having a new pre-requisite (maybe even a small test given by an NPC, that simply shows they are capable of commanding) would help alleviate the overall messiness of the current system.

With the specialization patch coming before HoT, and us not getting any extra stats from the trait lines themselves….

How about, instead of throwing more stats onto armor, you let THE PLAYER allocate the stats into the areas they want.

Similar to the increase/decrease buttons of Guild Wars 1, you can choose to add points into the main stat lines, and each time you add an increment it increases the “cost” (just like GW1, again)

This would let the player customize more personally outside of their gear choice, so it would be more like a “bonus” they choose.

They can throw all of it into Ferocity, and have a lower overall amount of stats due to cost inflation, or balance it into stats they regularly use.

example:

Traits lines no longer have stats attached and I am given 200 “points” to spend into:

- Power
- Toughness
- Vitality
- Healing Power
- Precision
- Ferocity
- Condition Damage (maybe not)

Placing your first increment adds the stat of choice in a given amount, adding more points gives you the same amount stacking on top, but the cost of adding those amounts increase each time.

One thing to take note of:

Click the dropdown menu arrow next to your main chat window/tab. In this dropdown, you will see “emotes” you can uncheck this option and the grey text will be removed from your chat.

If you like seeing emotes, you can simply create a new tab, and disable this and just swap to it when entering PvP/WvW.

Choosing this will not change visual emotes, only their appearance in the chat window.

Will they go back and fix issues with their current systems and mechanics?

Such as the Z-Axis with its plethora of issues revolving around leaps, jumps, teleports, ground-target abilities, multiple sets of falling damage, etc…..here is hoping

HoT seems awfully vertical…this could be a red mark

It is definitely a different kind of game, you can try up to 20 for free, with a ton of character slots so you can try every class as well.

The problem is that they have revamped alot of the lower level zones several times over making them more entertaining. Once you get to 60-80 you will start feeling the slog, it is just slow. Unless slow is what you are looking for that is, then it may be up your alley.

I can’t stand the PvP though personally, gear based and clear cut unbalance with some classes….although we are starting to see that here in GW2 as well.
