Revenant kills existing professions

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: leman.7682

leman.7682

Could we see future reworks of exisitng professions to make them on par with Revenant or should everyone just reroll the new profession on day one and forget about the past?

Specializations.

How do specializations solve the problem? From what we know, they take something away from a profession and give something new…

They don’t add cool animations and effects, they don’t make badly designed skills/weapons like necro axe/dagger, ranger sword/axe or warrior rifle good out of the sudden. Why? Because these weapons are based on simple tech like spam one to do dmg, press 2 to knock back, etc.

Not solving the problem.

Dhuumfire, you’ve served your purpose.

Thank you for showing us how OP things can become if you give too much to a profession at once.
We now know it was a mistake, the Torment would more than suffice, Terror does the job as well.

Necro burning needs to go. The profession needs to be brought back in line with others just like it was (relatively, taking all other profession buffs into account) pre-patch.

It should never, NEVER, be most optimal to spec into an ultra offensive (30,30,10) build like necros do right now. Please replace Dhuumfire with something that incentivizes skilled, timely and tactical gameplay instead of a mindless spamming of unblockable AoE.

Please bump this thread.

broken sigils / meta game

I agree, Zapdos.

Power meta and its faults are being perpetuated by Anet’s sluggichness with balancing.

The problem is that there is no alternative whatsoever; I tried playing condi necro, spectral necro, even a cleric necro in the past week, and the only thing that gives me a marginal chance at doing something of value is the power spec.

I think that balance may improve after the expansion lands and Anet stops reworking things globally and starts tuning them more frequently. That’s the hope.

Sorry for your problems, but this is not how it works in real life.

Your argument could be compared to a poor person coming and saying that he or she also deserves a business class seat because otherwise it is unfair. This is basically what you’re advocating – maintaining unfair system/build to make up for some deficiencies you or someone else may have. While it is important to not forget about people like you, it is largely more important to create a balanced and skillful game that caters to the ‘healthy’ majority. I’m sorry if this sounds harsh, merciless or indifferent, but that’s just the reality both in and outside of the game.

I’m sure there will be builds or roles that will be more fitted to your capabilities.
Leaving builds with very high payoff-to-difficulty ratio is not the way to go, because they destroy the community and are abused, paradoxically mostly by people that don’t have any health problems.

Good luck, man.

PvE: <trollface> nope
WvW: nope
PvP: a big topic, but in general I’d say it is strong, can carry games or be diminished to uselessness. It al depends on both teams and how well they are at protecting/shutting down the necro.
A teamfight with warriors and a thief that have only one purpose in life – to kill a necro – will be a difficult one for example. If a necro and his or her team can manage to kill their enemies first, the game may snowball hard into necros favour (LF reserves, map control).
If the assaulters succeed though, it is difficult for the necro to come back (slow movement, being susceptible to ganks and interceptions, usually no life force).

Depends, depends.

@Cogbyrn:

In cases of GW1 players I know (myself included) it’s just we don’t find it fun.

We were being served with a delicious PvP dish for past few years and were looking forward to new restaurant’s opening. The stuff they serve us now is different, it’s okay, but different and from my experience it tastes much worse than our favourite.

We know they are the same great chefs and that they can cook our fav, but for some reason they decided to throw away the recipe and serve something new. A new customer may be delighted, but for the old ones it just isn’t it for the many different reasons highlighted in this as well as many other topics.

I hope it helps you understand.

Additionally, I think the complaints have nothing to do with the alleged elitism.
I don’t complain because I can’t find my place in GW2 or because my place was taken.
I do it because I don’t like Conquest and I don’t find it fun. I want to like it, but I can’t and since I have problems liking it, I’m not going to play it.

Now, I don’t like Conquest because GvG was so much better and I wanted it to be included here. If Anet wants people like me (and to my best knowledge there are quite a few people who share my standpoint) to play their game, they should think of adding GvG-inspired mode.

But I guess it doesn’t matter since they already have our money…

Hello,

can someone with knowledge about necro development drop by and say at least a word about the necromancer’s state?

This profession is neglected in every discussion since forever. I tried to bring that matter to developers yesterday during SotG, but it went unheard and unanswered. Engies, eles, warriors, rangers were the hot topics, I understand, but let me just say – it doesn’t mean necros are okay. Far from that.

The Temple of the Silent Storm week showed us how some mechanics and map design favour professions with good mobility in design. How long can we be forced to play our beloved profession without any help?

Competitively I want to be able to do more than just stand on the upper ground spamming marks or wells and using the rez signet, occasionally soaking up damage in plague form. This is not fun.

Pretty please,

It's time for a shouts rework

in Ranger

Posted by: leman.7682

leman.7682

Hey, guys.

I don’t usually play ranger (only around 700 matches in PvP), but I’ve been lately gravitating towards it out of boredom and couldn’t help but remind myself how poor the ranger shouts are.

Now, I come from a necromancer community and we’ve had a long history of providing feedback and holding discussions about the profession and it seems ArenaNet is finally coming along.
To my surprise, I couldn’t find any large discussions on shouts here, and I’d expect the community to be bursting with ideas and asking for changes. We know that traps are getting streamlined and spirits are getting changed/reworked. So what about shouts, by far the worst ranger utility-line.

Problems I see:

  1. lackluster, straightforward effects (you know something’s wrong when the best skill is a percentage-based damage / movement speed increase for the pet, that is still only viable in PvE)
  2. overshadowed by other utility lines (signets and survivals are both superior in all meta PvP builds)
  3. poor trait synergy (partially being fixed by the proposed trait reworks)
  4. purposelessness of these skills, i.e. they don’t open gameplay possibilities

All these problems are connected. The original design just doesn’t allow them to be good. I understand that they were supposed to be ‘the ranger twist on shouts’, allowing the ranger to utilise the pet in new ways, but I don’t believe they’re achieving that goal.

  • Search and Rescue – high-tier PvP is now based on banners, rezz spirits and mercy runes. No one is ever going to use the shout with it’s horrendous recharge (even if traited in all possible ways), because the pet is just going to get CC’d and cleaved to death, so you’re wasting your pet and the cooldown.
  • Sic ’Em – the addition of Revealed was supposed to increase its appeal, but there are much better options, not to mention the pet is either going to get kited around or get stuck in passive crowd-control.
  • Guard – it gives some nice effects for the pet and has a pretty low CD, but I can’t understand what the purpose of this skill is. Haven’t seen anyone use it in PvP in over 6000 matches. Also that 1s cast time making its use unenjoyable.
  • Protect Me – potentially good and different from SoS, but still feels just worse and bland.

Some ideas to make these shouts work better, more fun and give them their own niche:

Make them a ranger version of physical skills for warriors, gameplay-wise.
Basically – lower cooldowns, more active effects, accordingly adjusted traits.

  • Search and Rescue – removes poison and heals allies for 15% HP both those standing and downed. Anet said that they are thinking about allowing one of necromancer traits that makes DS#4 skill heal allies to also heal downed players, rezzing the effictively, so why not use a similar mechanic with a more bursty heal/rezz on rangers? Lower cooldown, not too low.
  • Sic ‘Em – just add some short duration stability (3 stacks, 3 seconds) to the pet and a launch effect with a little charge so that you basically bull’s charge the enemy with your pet and launch them, revealing them and dealing increased damage (pet) for a short period. Similar cooldown.
  • Guard – remove the cast time! Pet gains stealth, protection, runs to the target location and taunts enemies. Slightly higher cooldown.
  • Protect Me – pet teleports to you (just like with the pet swap), does a short range (600?) PBAoE knockdown and gives you protection and/or resistance. Lower cooldown.

Traits – shout traits across professions are similar – usually a 20% recharge reduction and some active effect (shoutbows heal). While I think that regen + swiftness aren’t necessarily bad, I prefere some active effects; 0.5s evade for the ranger and allies on activation? Wouldn’t like to make it too strong to create a perma evade ranger, just throwing in the idea.

What I think these changes achieve is that they make shouts more active, more fun to play. They can be used both defensively and offensively. Opponents can still mitigate the proposed Sic ’Em and Protect Me by evading/blocks. The proposed changes allow your pet to actively support you if used skillfully.

What do you guys think? Should shouts get reworked?

Also, even though you can kill me, I am yet to see a match you win against me, think we’re going 4-0 for me. You know why? Because this game is about teamplay and you working with your team instead of complaining that conditions kill you.
It’s not about winning 1v1 while the points tick for your opponent.
It’s not about making conditions bad so that your build (that is btw insanely good vs condis) can stand them.

All I have to say – l2p issue.

I wish they made a real mature story. With many interesting characters presented in many situations, which we have an opportunity to meet and accompany during their adventures. Baldur’s Gate/Planescape style. No more Trahearne, no more Lords Farens, no more Tybalds (as much as I liked him, he suffered as every other character in this game – was introduced, said something, participated in couple of missions and then disappeared).
The villains need to be presented as well, Zhaitan was a good idea, I like when we don’t really know what we’re fighting against until we meet the opponent. The execution on the other hand, was terrible

Give us both fractals

in Cutthroat Politics

Posted by: leman.7682

leman.7682

With the voting coming to an end, I think it is wise to stop and think about what Cutthroat Politics taught us.

Setting the personal preference to who is a better or worse candidate, I’d like to thank the Community for a fun time campaigning Ellen and Evon. It’s been a blast.

Now, to the main topic; having us choose between certain sets of perks associated with each candidate was a great idea. It adds the feeling of having an impact on the world, even if for some it was only a feeling.

I played GW1 and personally I would die to see the Abaddon fractal. I didn’t understand why someone could pick Thaumanova over it until I realized that there are people who feel the same about the second fractal. People with different preferences and backgrounds pick different things. This is natural and perfectly understandable, but…

It’s the first time we’re getting something meaningful, something that actually intrigues the players and having them give up on one thing for another isn’t right.

Right now:

  • We don’t need minigames and yet you give us all of them.
  • We don’t need more backpieces, but here they are.
  • We don’t need more jumping puzzles and yet again…
  • We could live without completing another sets of piñata-achievements, but they keep coming.
  • We need interesting new adventures in places never seen before, but you come and tell us to take our pick.

It shouldn’t be like this, this is not a choice I want to make. Life has enough of those.
I don’t want such choice because someone will be disappointed. (in this case quite possibly close to 50% of the voting playerbase)
If the choice was whether to move Lion’s Arch to Skrittsburgh or which one of the two already existing areas to explore first then it would be okay.

But you show us two beautiful pictures and say that the one we pick will be given to us, while the other will disappear, being only an idea planted in our minds. How many people will like both pictures?

Give us both fractals, I don’t want cheaper waypoints. Hell, you can even make them more expensive for some time if it could get us both adventures.
If the conclusion of Cutthroat Politics means that we will not see the Fall of Abaddon or the Thaumanova explosion, then I no longer want to be a part of this game.

Structured PvP Constructive Thread

in PvP

Posted by: leman.7682

leman.7682

A month has passed and I decided to step in with something more than just a humorous posts here and there.

What I am aiming at is starting a wide discussion about sPvP’s future. What we as a community need to do is take the collective effort and provide our insight to familiarize ArenaNet with different points of view. Together we can improve GW2 PvP and make it as good as it can be. Ideally this thread could gain some notice from developers and the community as a whole and become a place they could look in search of ideas.

Before I start the whole discussion I would like to say that it will be largely connected to the original Guild Wars game, which I believe was much better in many ways. If you want to comment with standard ‘it’s a completely new, different game’, I’d appreciate if you refrained from replying. Thanks.

What’s also important, I will be mainly talking in reference to GvG/HA, since these two were essentially standing for PvP in Guild Wars. If not stated differently, that’s our standard reference point.

Where it all started?

The whole design philosophy behind the combat system and PvP (as well as PvE, but I won’t be talking about it that much) that led us to where we are today was pretty simple. ArenaNet saw obvious drawbacks the original Guild Wars game had and wanted to create something better. Unfortunately, there were limitations (both through engine and design) that made it impossible to implement the ‘vision’ in Guild Wars 1. This is when and why Guild Wars 2 development process started.

What were the key factors that led them do that?

  1. Firstly, everything Trinity-related with a great emphasis on healer (Monk) profession. To play any kind of serious PvP in GW1 you had to have a dedicated monk healer and prot (damage mitigation specced monk). Whether we’re talking GvG or HA or TA, you always needed a monk. This was greatly stopping some people from playing competitively because they just didn’t have decent monks. It wouldn’t be that much of a problem if the healer roles weren’t limited to virtually two builds with some skill variations. This was causing problems with teambuilding closing the PvP community.
  2. Secondly, the team size was 8 players. This one’s pretty simple – either you had an 8 player team or you didn’t have (a competitive) team at all. It was another limiting factor.
  3. Game complexity and difficulty was another limitation. High-end PvP was revolving around things like kiting, set swapping, coordinated spikes and cooperation between split groups just to name some. All of those on top of knowledge of meta builds and maps as well as player’s personal skills. Speaking of skills – there were hundreds of abilities that provided endless build options (with relatively few viable options) which were almost impossible to balance adding fuel to the fire.
  4. Another thing that comes to mind is elitism and titles. I haven’t experienced it myself, but it was obvious that people starting the game some years after its release had extremely hard time getting into PvP. It was resembling a corporate world with its necessities like networking (reliable Friend List) and achievements (LF r12+). To play competitively you had to have a full team of friends who knew each other. To be accepted into a good team you had to be good of course, but you also needed proof in the form of PvP titles. The aforementioned factors made getting titles a very difficult and time-consuming objective.

We could probably think of more, but let’s stop right here. Suffice to say there were serious barriers for new players blocking them from playing and enjoying competitive PvP. They closed the community making it hermetic eventually leading PvP into stagnation and death.

At the same time, PvP was extremely fun, challenge-oriented and exceptionally rewarding. Holding Tombs was giving your realm Favor of the Gods back in the days. Winning in GvG tournaments would give you in-game wealth and recognition for your guild. GW1 GvG is probably the most challenging team PvP to date. It gave few years of extreme fun to people who could play it and compete with each other.
With that said – it didn’t work for the majority. Anet saw that and wanted to make things right.

The definition of glass cannon (tutorial)

in Necromancer

Posted by: leman.7682

leman.7682

I always liked your videos, they are very well structurized and explained thoroughly.

As to the build itself, it is good for PvE, but lacks in some parts if PvP is concerned for couple of reasons:

  1. I never liked spammy builds and this is a spammy build.
  2. Spectral Wall isn’t viable vs good players, because they won’t go through it unless totally forced to.
  3. Spectral Grab doesn’t help much in a teamfight situations because it’s a projectile.
  4. You get kicked out of DS very fast in close range combat as a necro in PvP.
  5. You will have exceptionally hard time against most 1v1 match-ups, especially good thieves (stealth), mesmers (blocks/reflections + confusion counters spammy builds).

There is also one important thing I don’t think you emphasized enough – in this type of build you should always aim at spamming Life Blast from 100% to 50% Life Force – it has a higher damage in that stage.

So the final rotation should be like: load 100% life force with your attacks (Axe ‘2’ or Dagger auto or Spectrals) using utilities at the same time, pop into DS, 11111111 until 50%, at this point you can use Life Transfer or get out of the DS and ride on the stacked might to regenerate LF to 100% again with Axe ‘2’ and/or Dagger auto to repeat the rotation.

Overall, a great build and even greater tutorial and video.

You’re not showing the important part, Rasman!

This has become a phenomenon on my megaservers on EU. What’s not to love.

tl/dr version: Necros are now bigger sitting ducks than ever before because without that trick, they don’t have access to deathshroud, which is the reason they don’t have many defensive tools in the first place, cause second health bar op!

So I played my necro all night last night. I have to say, if you feel like a sitting duck, I think the problems is how you play, not the profession.

Zero gold: Are you happy?

in PvP

Guys, I’m somehow economics freak so let me just say one thing many people seem to forget or don’t consider out of simple lack of economic insight.

If you allow to get gold in PvP you must consider its deep consequences.

1. First of all it creates an incentive to farm PvP. No matter how’d you get the gold. People would farm glory/match wins or whatever to get their share of gold.

2. With this incentive additional people jump into PvP. Not to compete though, but to get the gold.

3. Bots join PvP and farm nodes day and night in empty servers.

4. Gems and gold markets are connected. People buy gems with RL money and sell them to players. The more gold exists in the game the more you have to pay for the gems. Gems become expensive and markets suffers from inflation (gold price/value drops).

5. Not only gems but also PvE items become more expensive (inflation, again).

6. Guys can buy gems and sell them for more gold, leaving the game more vulnerable to RL money financing.

Is it what you want? I do not.

This reward you lack is supposed to be gems you get for participating in Paid Tournaments. We know there is a problem with that right now.

As I mentioned before, the only way possible to introduce some more interesting and useful rewards is to give PvPers unsellable things that can be used in PvE/WvW.

Account-bound – dye packs, armour/weapon skins (not items!), WvW badges, minipets, etc.
Now, these things would cause a drop in prices of some items of PvE origin (minis, dyes, possibly some rare skin exotics, because you could just craft an exotic cheaply and then apply a skin from PvP). It would just cause a shift in demand for these PvE items. BUT it would keep bots and farmers out of the circuit, at the same time providing PvPers with items they could use outside of PvP.

This is just horrible.

kittenton of hype.
0 actual delivery.
0 communication.
100% unprofessional.

I work for a Global Fortune 20 company and I can say one thing – it is impossible to pull off such BS here. My department would be fired immediately if we delivered products with Anet’s approach.

See you in January, guys.

Lets be honest about necro

in PvP

Game is just broken right now. It’s based on stealth one-shots, more passive effects and procs and hard-counters.

Meta necro counters my ranger without longbow. My ranger counters off guardians. Mesmer counters everything. Etc.

Add the over 9000 bugs that were introduced with the patch and we have esports.

Solution: place 2 little white bugs in both bases so that they can be killed before the match starts.

Ohh, and Anet, by ‘bugs’ I mean creatures, not your usual bugs.

Balance the game

please.
JP, Karl & Co, please no more cheese and noskill mechanics, I beg you, stop pumping that into the game. We give you feedback everyday and you say you listen, but truly you don’t. All you care about is gems and e-sports.
Where were you when I was getting stomped by that warrior? Where were you when my teammate was getting wrecked by a cancer ele?
Please, can you finally do something about this poor balance in PvP and PvE? Can you make all classes equally viable and, more importantly, do it fast?
We give you gems everyday and you force us to wait for months. This is not how relationships work.

In relationships, you have to be there for the other one everyday and make them know that. Otherwise the gf may just leave you. You know, if we were your spouses, we would have divorced you a long time ago, because you don’t show us the love.

How are we supposed to know you still love us if you are never there for us? These are relationship basics. I don’t want to sound needy, but some love from time to time would make everyone happy. You can’t spend all your time ignoring us – you need to balance this more carefully. We have our needs, like every woman would tell you! These needs got to be fulfilled or the love will slowly fade…

Also, it would be really nice and invigorating if you could leak some future balance patch notes once again. They at least make us look for something in the future.

Please, fix the game.
