The real problem of Living Story? (rewards)

in Living World

No, they haven’t. If you compare it to other MMOs, they haven’t released full armor sets where we can earn them via dungeons or pvp. In other MMOs, you can earn full sets of armor by obtaining the next tier. GW2 has only had one full set of armor (Sky Pirates update), but only purchased via the Trading Post.

This was a pretty bad implementation for lower levels, because they can’t start over. All their points are already spent. That’s what some of you don’t get. It’s fine for older lvl 80s, since they have enough points to re-learn everything.

It’s probably the major reason why i stopped playing. There isn’t anything on the horizon to look forward towards. I’ll stop by every several weeks to see if anything is new, but it’s nothing but the halloween and living story updates. That’s pretty underwhelming to be honest. WoW, WS, AA, ESO, Swtor, etc., all have expansions and major updates to look forward towards, and gives players expectations, whether or not they live up to them is to be seen, but at least they can be expected.

The sad thing is, that Berserker Gameplay, is actually encouraged. Instead of addressing it, Anet builds their game around it. I don’t see how stacking a boss in a corner is challenging, or even fun. The same can be said for Champ Zergs. There isn’t any thought process put into it. It just breeds elitists in the community, and all you have to do is read the comments in these posts.

GW2 dungeons are too chaotic for beginners. Everyone goes into Ascalon Catacombs and gets facerolled because of the lack of a “target of target” feature, a lack of AI cast bars, and the visual cues are worthless, because you will die too fast with a 1-shot hit. It’s very unforgiving for new players. There are no entry-level dungeons for them.

Dungeons for leveling up and new players should gradually scale up to more challenging dungeons at max level.

This design is based off of GW1, where you actually capture elites. In essence this is what you are doing for your character. Think of the Traits as Elites you need to capture – not much difference.

Doing with a new character and all the complaints I have read in this thread, it is not as bad or even the same as you are talking about. It is still pretty easy-peasy.

This is nothing like GW1! In GW1, you had to hunt skills, but they were optional. In GW2, traits are part of the core classes, and they are not optional. They are needed, for build diversification and experimentation. Good luck to the newbies in dungeons without traits.

GW2 would have been #1 if it was more traditional. Too many radical changes with combat and roles. It sounded great theory, but in practice, it has been sub-par.

The elimination of Non-Trinity Roles gave us chaos in dungeons.
Target-of-target missing.
Enemy cast bars missing.
Missed skills/spells = Wasted Cooldowns.
Camera/Control mechanics sub-par and amateurish.
the list goes on.

You did not read my post properly. It is not an option. It is not possible without touching core systems. Which will have other consequences. An MMO is a very complex thing.

So what your telling us is: Removing a key feature from the personal bank doesn’t touch any core systems, but adding a completely new feature while leaving the bank as is would require you to alter core systems.

I may not be a programmer, but something about that statement just seems backwards to me.

He’s not a programmer either. He has no idea how the digital cogs work. In the future, he should refrain from posting comments, in regards to topics outside of his own area of expertise.

Take your own advice then. You, and others, do not know the coding practices or how business is run within Arena-net. It’s not your area of expertise on how to run an MMO.

When will we see dueling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

Dueling is just one aspect of what’s wrong with GW2 pvp. Conflict in GW2 doesn’t go beyond limited areas (SPvP & WvW).

Their design philosophy, is basically: everyone holds hands, in a cooperative environment, against PvE.

This is why there isn’t any factions. In WoW, you have Horde vs. Alliance. In Rift, you have Defiance vs. Guardians. In Swtor, Empire vs. Republic, etc.. the list goes on.

In my opinion, this was a very bad decision. Imagine a faction-based environment in GW2, where the Vigil, Priory, Whispers were at war. It doesn’t necessarily have to be these orders either, as they could’ve used old GW1 lore for Shining Blade and White Mantle. The possibilities are enormous here.

Instead, we get a watered down PvP environment in WvW, where faceless enemies represent a server, instead of a faction. How lame is that? And SPvP doesn’t excite either, because it just represents Blue vs. Red colors, instead of factions.

Every major villain wannabe in gw2 is a sylvari, Canach, Scarlet now another one A… something < already forgot his name as I write here. Seems like Pale Tree is losing his flock

Not to mention that I hope anet is learning something by now, Canach was a miserable fail to portrayal a villian, Scarlet was a mary sue… now lets see this one how they fail him. Apparently this new villian lost his mind too, verry original, we just get rid of the last crazy silvary two months ago. Clearly the grove needs a mental institution in the next patch

You forgot Faolain, Caithe’s lesbian lover, because you know, we need more lesbian love plots! And not exactly a villain, but Trahearne was a major character.

A question about GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

I’m not disregarding what you say about Guildwars 2 being a more relaxing experience for an mmo overall but there comes a point when people just want more of a challenge something to work towards like a wall to get over not only alone but with friends and guild mates. The whole game is currently built around casual players but there becomes a point where people want/need more progression. Before anyone says go play <mmo> here if you want a challenge I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t love this game for what it is.

I agree. There should be more challenging open-world content, but for smaller groups, since the bigger groups already have Wurm and Tequatl.

Champ trains are so ridiculous, and they need to be stopped, whether it’s in Queensdale, or in Frostgorge, or anywhere. It’s just a big zerg, running from champ to champ, with no challenge or strategy, at all.

Anet needs to kill them once and for all, and stop encouraging it.

The easiest solution is to just put them on random timers. They could’ve also made them available as guild missions.

Once champ trains are gone, then players will start doing other content again, such as temples, dungeons, etc.

As it is currently, endgame for gw2, is seeing 50+ people running in circles from champ to champ, because it’s currently the fastest way to get loot. This doesn’t happen in other MMOs, and it just feels like amateur game-design.

Quick solution: Random timers & Zone-wide announcement that a champ spawned.

So, if players don’t play the way you like they’re wrong and must be corrected.
Nice.

It’s not about what i like. It’s about bad game design. Is it really intended for the world of Tyria, to see hundreds of people running around in circles, killing the same mobs over and over, in a short amount of time, multiple times a day?

Not only is it ridiculous from a lore and immersion viewpoint, but it’s also ridiculous from a gameplay viewpoint. Instead of having people use Swiftness boons, they might as well just line up the Champs against a wall, and have them spawn continuously. It’s really the same thing. The only difference is the travelling part. At least in EotM though, there are other players that kill you. Not so much in champ trains.

Where did all the players go?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

And that’s why people complain about Guild Wars 2 recently. We got Living Story updates and content every two weeks to two months, depending on certain situations, and now we’re getting nothing. In a nutshell, ANet set a certain standard of expectations with their continual updates.

Now? We get nada until some undisclosed time in the future. Maybe this summer? Maybe this Christmas? Maybe next year?

See the problem? I know I am and so are a lot of players. Thus this thread and the exodus.

And yet everyone with any sort of understanding of reality would know that it could not go on for ever. Especially not if they were going to start releasing expansions. Which interestingly enough those of us that preferred the Living Story system warned about when people were demanding expansions. And here we are.

There is no exodus. People can claim that all they want, but the fact that there are daily posts about people just starting the game or coming back to the game suggest otherwise. So does actual activity in the game itself.

These people aren’t staying for the long term. It’s a short term investment.

It’s just like a themepark in real life. You get people on the ride, then funnel them out quickly so others can have a ride.

There is no long term investment for gw2.

I gave up hope on dungeons awhile back. That aspect of the game is dead. It doesn’t matter what Anet says about it.

There have been countless threads since release, on how to improve them, and then some Anet employee comes in and acts like they need more info and an organization of threads. Seriously? You’re telling us that you didn’t collect any data over the last 2 years on how to improve them?

At least those devs in the video were honest. They even looked quite disappointed giving the news that dungeons are on the backburner. Sad days indeed.

Game Updates: Traits

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

I believe this may be more in line with what players were hoping for. Also note, many of the tasks are BELOW the level where you will unlock a trait tier – this is intentional. I believe you will see better results if people can have immediate access to the content and use that to fuel growth, rather than being gated by their level for content they should have access to already.

Notice that most of these tasks are vague and open-ended, designed to compliment a “play as you want” style. Traits are gained in progression without having to force too much checklist style exploration. If a trait is not listed here, it’s because I personally consider it to be at least feasible. Others should comment as necessary.

Suggestions for new trait unlocks:

1-I: Obsidian Sanctum. Complete three jumping puzzles. Any puzzles.

1-II: Inferno’s Needle. Help the Charr fight the flame legion! Complete 10 Flame Legion-themed hearts

1-III: 100% Gendarran Field. Complete five “combat” skill challenges in Kryta

1-V: 100% Blazeridge Steppes. Defeat a Champion creature in Brisban Wildlands

1-VII: Ogre Camp. Locate 10 “camp” POIs

1-VIII: Citadel of Flame Defeat a Champion creature in Fireheart Rise

Problem: Trait unlocks are tedious (line 2)
2-II: Twilight Arbor. Help the Sylvari fight the Nightmare Court! Complete 10 Nightmare Court-themed renown hearts.

2-VI: Lornar’s Pass. Complete five “commune” skill challenges in the Shiverpeak Mountains

2-VII: Hylek Camp. Defeat a Champion creature in Sparkfly Fen

2-X: Personal Story Forging the Pact. Complete one group event in five of the following: Sparkfly, Maelstrom, Timberline, Frostgorge, Iron Marches, Fireheart

2-XI: Crucible of Eternity. Secure Infinity Coil

Problem: Trait unlocks are tedious (line 3)
3-II: Battle for Claw Island. Complete level 28 personal story (racial arc)

3-III: Stonegaze Spire. Complete five “combat” skill challenges in the Maguuma Jungle

3-VI: Victurus the Shattered. Locate 10 “ruins” POIs

3-V: 100% Fields of Ruin. Defeat a Champion creature in the Fields of Ruin

3-VI: Giant Blood Ooze. Help the Norn fight the Sons of Svanir! Complete 10 Sons of Svanir-themed renown hearts.

3-VII: Dredge Camp. Defeat a Champion creature in Bloodtide Coast

3-VIII: Sorrow’s Embrace. Defeat a Champion creature in Timberline Falls

3-X: Battle for Fort Trinity. Locate Vizier’s Tower

Problem: Trait unlocks are tedious (line 4)
4-I: Light in the Darkness. Complete five “combat” skill challenges in the Shiverpeak Mountains

4-II: Tytone Perch. Find Beaker

4-IV: 100% Harathi Hinterlands. Help the humans fight centaurs! Complete 10 centaur-themed renown hearts

4-VI: Krait Witch in Timberline Falls. Complete five “commune” challenges in the Maguuma Jungle

4-VIII: Chest in Arundon Vale. Locate Diedre’s Garden

4-X: Source of Orr. Chest in Arundon Vale

4-XI: Honor of the Waves. Defeat one of the Dragon Champion world bosses (Teq, Shatterer, Jormag)

Problem: Trait unlocks are tedious (line 5)
5-I: Caudecus’s Manor. Complete five “commune” skill challenges in Kryta

5-III: Retribution. Complete five “combat” skill challenges in Ascalon

5-VI: 100% Dredgehaunt Cliffs. Help the Asura! Complete 10 Inquest-themed renown hearts

5-V: Champ Ice Wurm. Defeat a Champion creature in Lornar’s Pass

5-VI: Lord Ignius the Eternal. Defeat a Champion creature in Snowden Drifts

5-VIII: Infinity Coil Commander. Defeat a Champion creature in Mount Maelstrom

5-IX: Admiral Taidha Covington. Defeat any of the 50-70 world bosses.

5-XI: Overgrown Grub. Complete 10 “combat” skill challenges in Orr

5-XII: Ruined City of Arah. Complete 10 “commune” skill challenges in Orr

Something like this would be so much better. I don’t like the zone themes though. It’s still requiring new players to go out of their way.

+1
How much attention to their characters do people really pay? I’ve been playing for just about a year now and literally 2 weeks ago I discovered that GW2 has jiggle physics and that boobs bounce. If I hadn’t seen multiple threads about it here and on reddit I probably would have never noticed that the idle animations had been changed. Why do people actually care about this. Most MMO’s don’t even give characters voices (unless it’s a cutscene) let alone extensive idle animations.

That’s not the point. Animations give life to the character models. It’s what makes them different from other races, or static objects such as a chair. You don’t notice it because it’s a subtle passive effect.

3. Becoming a leader of PvE events or in WvW.
4. Keeping up with Living Story.
5. Making and running a guild.

There is, but it’s not about progression. The items are just skins from achievements.

I’ve always thought the terrain of gw2 is amazing, the free roaming and lack of invisible walls is a huge plus. I played TERA for about 10 minutes recently, walked into four invisible walls and uninstalled it.

Just imagine walking from Frostgorge Sound to Cursed Shore without a loading screen.

You’ll still be blocked by mountains too high, but you’ll have the freedom to travel through different routes to another zone. This isn’t possible with GW2, since the only way out is through a portal or waypoint.

Not cool. What happened to ‘play how you want’? The supposed motto of GW2 from day 1… I can’t play how I want because I’m forced to do something I don’t want to do!!!

  • You’re not forced to do anything. Having or not having a skin makes zero impact on how you kill mobs. “I can’t kill mobs because I’m not stylish enough!” is not an argument, even for Kasmeer.

This argument doesn’t work.
You’re right. People are not forced, but when you create content that discourages players to even attempt it, then it’s bad design.

You should realize this is an “end-game” reward. So, no, it doesn’t make an impact on how to kill mobs, but it does make an impact on what to expect from future end-game rewards. Players will end up deciding if GW2 is worth their time and investment, when the content they do like, is being sidelined for content they don’t enjoy.

Guild Wars: Factions, $50, Guild Wars: Nightfall, $50. No. Look at EVERY expansion for World of Warcraft then come back.

Factions: Separate Campaign, added an entire continent, 2 new professions, multiple skills and armor sets, $50. Nightfall: Separate Campaign, added an entire continent, 2 new professions, multiple skills and armor sets, $50 bucks. WoW expansions, generally pretty kitten big.

HoT: Expansion, adds one profession, multiple skills and armor sets. As far as we know, the only areas added in PVE will be just to the west of Silverwastes and south into Magus Falls. I won’t be super pessimistic and say “lol only three maps!”, but such a small area doesn’t seem worth standard expansion price to me. Perhaps if they added the Maguuma Wastes all the way up to the coast of Janthir Bay and east into the Woodland Cascades, the current price would be more palatable.

I can agree with that. My issue is everyone screaming like they didn’t see this coming. Anyone with an iota of common sense saw this coming a mile away.

Wrong. People were waiting to see what will be included, and that means everything. 100% included. It’s actually funny that they released prices without revealing 100% of the content that will be included.

A Detailed Comparison for HoT

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: nexxe.7081

nexxe.7081

Hey OP, I have a question for you. With all the great comparison work you’ve done, and all the comparing, how come you left out dynamic events which the game is centered around. For example Guild Wars Prophecies had 209 quests.

If you add up all the quests in all four Guild Wars 1 products, you’ll find it was less than the number of dynamic events than Guild Wars 2 launched with.

You also left out species and starter areas. Seems to me I can play five races in this game, but only play 1 race throughout all of Guild Wars 2.

This is an expansion comparison. Not an original game comparison. When we spend the 45eur hot costs, we are not getting 5 new races to play, nor a ton of dynamic events

No, we’re not. However, we are getting events, and we don’t know how many and we’ve have to compare that to the original game, since events replace quests. They content. We don’t have enough information to compare at this point, and so the comparison is premature.

One might argue then that the pre-purchase is premature, but then no one is forcing anyone to buy it. Why make a comparison when we don’t have the information we need to compare yet?

It’s pretty safe to say there won’t be a lot of events in Verdant Brink. From what i played in beta, even Orr had twice as many.

“Why make a comparison when we don’t have the information we need to compare yet?”

The other argument could be, “Why prepurchase if we don’t have all of the information yet?”.

Here’s the problem with the Living Story, summed up.

It’s running parallel with the Personal Story, Dynamic Events, NPC dialogue, and everything else that launched since release.

Everything before the Living Story became irrelevant. They all felt abandoned, until recently. Not only that, but temporary content and fluff items made everything worse.

Things like Super Adventure Box was alright for April’s Fools Day, but then it made a return out of nowhere. It was ridiculous and it does not belong in a Guild Wars universe. Then we have silly things like Quaggan backpacks, which makes GW2 feel like a Rated G cartoon.

I could go on, but there’s no point. Others before me, for over a year, have brought up excellent reasons why Living Story has been terrible for GW2.

Please delete. Thanks.

Blizzard also did this to WoW when Cataclysm came out (i’m guessing).
They removed hostile mobs, by making them yellow instead of red.
They also got rid of drowning for characters under 10.
They removed armor damage for players under 10.
They introduced quest markers on minimap & map.
Skills automatically unlocked, which was probably the best thing to come out of their “NPE”.
And many other things too.

It’s as if Anet took a step backwards though, and are using the traditional MMO skill locks, that are restricted by levels. It’s just the same as WoW and all the other clones now.

@ Lord Funk, Queensdale is always available if complex maps are not your thing.

This doesn’t speak to his concerns because he is looking for new, future content he wants to do, not recycle old content.

If he doesn’t like the new maps maybe he should look for a new game then, because the game is moving in a different direction than the easy mode maps we have played for years. I am happy with the direction it is going and I think the majority of veteran players will feel the same way.

Why do people always want others to leave the game? I’m sure Anet doesn’t think like that. They actually want people to enjoy their creations, and all the hard work they put into them.

If they didn’t get feedback from people that aren’t satisfied, they wouldn’t know how to change their game for the better. Telling them to simply stop playing is counter-productive for the game.

GW2 is action combat. It has way more mobility than Tera ever will. Tera locks you in place until the animation is finished, which isn’t very mobile at all. Some skills in GW2 lock us in place, but they are very few and can be cancelled by moving. Not only that, but we get true dodging in GW2, unlike in Tera, where “dodging” is very limited.

The only reason people think Tera’s combat is better is because of the crosshair. Other than that, it’s more static in it’s combat.

I’m sorry for my post on the first page. You were right. PVE in GW2 is about zerker stats, nothing more. Anet wants us to use zerker as there is time counter on any major boss event.

Other stat combos are for PVP and partially for WvW where you need some more health to survive mass aoe fights.

//so much fun QQ//

That’s another good point.
If GW2 wasn’t only about DPS, then why is there always a timer on world bosses? A healer and support build would be useless.

so does anyone think that with the beginning of expansions for gw2 with hot we will start to see new skills like this added to the game? im hopeful but im sure it wont be in the first expansion, but maybe some of these ideas will be used for guild halls

Well, as i said on page 2 (in above link), which is over 9 months ago, i seriously doubt Anet will focus on housing.

Ever since then… Swtor has released their housing system and expanded on it greatly. WS has their own form, WoW has Garrisons, and Tera released Guild Housing.

Anet would’ve said something about it for HoT, so i wouldn’t hold my breath.

Will Anet ever make Non-DPS role important?

A lot of you are missing the point in this thread.

Sure, people can wear whatever stats they want, but it’s not going to be efficient, and it’s going to waste people’s time.

And that’s the real problem here. People value their time. They want the most efficient group that will clear dungeons fast. They do not want a group member that will be a hinderance to the overall dungeon run.

It’s easy to say, “then just find another group”, but the reality is, that you’ll be in the minority of most meta-dungeon runners. You will be the person that isn’t contributing to the group efficiently, because you want to be stubborn, or out of ignorance, and use sub-optimal gear, traits, and builds.

I’ll use an example from WoW (since most people are familiar with it).

Let’s say a Paladin specs into the DPS role Retribution, a Druid in a Feral dps spec, and 3 other DPS classes. Would you ever run with this group into a heroic dungeon? The answer is no. There wouldn’t be a tank or a healer. Sure, this group could eventually complete the dungeon if they were good at their classes, but it would be slower, and less efficient. The druid would have to use sub-par healing skills, to keep people alive, and then his DPS feral spec would’ve been utterly useless to bring in the first place. This is what some of you arguing for. It’s silly. No sane group would want you.

This is the same with GW2. Why bring other roles, when it’s not needed? The encounters aren’t designed with them in mind. The encounters become standard for stacking and zerging, with condition caps, whether it was intentional or not. Most devastating encounters can also be avoided by dodging, which in effect, makes other roles, that can block and shield the group, pretty much useless.

If you’re not doing DPS, inexperienced at your class, and not being self-reliant on your survival.. then you’re not contributing to the group that wants to finish the dungeon for the 100th run.

If the encounters actually needed support roles, then they would be just as desired as DPS roles, but they don’t. DPS is the desired, and preferred, role.

I’ve played 4 games so far, and i’m actually enjoying it.

People are still learning what to do, so the games aren’t as good, but give it time, and it will definitely be a favorite amongst the players. There’s all types of strats that can be used in it.

This IS insulting.

This is the problem with Anet.

They want to hinder progress because it might be too overwhelming, but instead of delaying the progress, they could just actually teach players with an in-game tutorial.

This is just beyond stupid for leveling alts now. Veterans keep getting screwed over with every patch. First traits, and now this.

Vet players got more!

Veterans keep this game alive by using their time on this game, and buying gems. And you have the gall to call them greedy? Some veterans spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on the gem store. You can kindly go you know what.

ANet provides the tools. The community provides the demand.

Not necessarily.

There is only demand because of the way the encounters are designed. If they made the encounters that demanded other playstyles, then you would see a variety of builds and other gear sets being used.

Anet doesn’t see zerging and stacking as a problem though. They tried to change it with the revamped Teq encounter, and the Triple Wurm encounter, but overall, the dungeons haven’t been changed, and neither has the open-world zerging. This is why GW2’s PVE encounters are considered a joke in the MMO world. It’s a harsh thing to say, but it’s the truth.

It’s kind of sad that players even need these preventions in the first place. This is why the players are to blame. This is why other MMO companies have severe restrictions against gold sellers and exploiters. If you guys are angry, direct it to your fellow players. It sucks that we have to rely on devs to be our babysitters.
