The Root Problem, or How to Balance PvP

in PvP

Posted by: Sunshine.5014

Sunshine.5014

TL;DR: The current balance approach is broken because the interval is too long. I suggest decoupling number tweaks from big changes, and that comes with many benefits.

People talked a lot about how PvP was never balanced. People gave a ton of suggestions on how to balance, then retreated to their #allisvain corner because ANet didn’t implement it.

Big question: WHY?

The real problem is the process. ANet has followed a wrong process on balancing. Read on.

They developed the new patch in house, closed door. Then tested it in house, closed door, for a long time. Then released it, and people screamed. This is a wrong approach to software developing.

This is the new approach that they should follow:

  • Cut the balance patch interval to 3 week for number changes. Faster iteration allows them to react to new OP build, especially when it only requires number tweaks, like the Healing Signet 8% nerf.
  • In parallel, develop bigger balance patches that are released every 3 months that cover bigger issues.
  • Decouple small/easy numeric changes from the big changes like adding new maps, so that adding a new map/game mode doesn’t make people cry because it delays basic balance changes.

Benefits:

  • Easier to fix mistakes. People can argue that having faster release cycle means ANet will make a lot more mistakes/overbuffs/overnerfs. That is a fallacy, because the time span between mistakes will be reduced greatly. In one week, ANet decide to buff Guardians, and people cry on the forums? Just nerf them next week, tweaking until people don’t cry about it anymore.
  • Get better feedback from the real customers. Nerfed Healing Signet 8% and people still say Warriors OP? Get a big plan to balance them in the background for 3 months, while in parallel, neft Healing Signet another 5%. After that, if people don’t complain anymore, congrats! you got the number. If people still complain, tweak the number more. At least, until the big balance patch is ready, people don’t feel like they have to play a broken game for 6 months
  • Reduced QA effort. Let the gamers test it. If they don’t like it, tweak it next week. You don’t need to have your QA test the balance that intensively anymore. Your QA should focus on finding exploits and bigger problems. If you only tweak the numbers, then let the real players test them and give feedback
  • HAPPY players. This also means more money. You will see less #allisvain threads because the players know that it will be fixed in 1-2 weeks instead of 6 months. You will still see threads arguing that some classes/builds are OP, but the chances are people will argue for both sides, instead of unanimously agree that Warriors are OP like right now. When you start seeing people stop unanimously complain about something, then you know you’re heading to the right direction. A shorter release cycle is a good thing.

Software development has changed. Good engineers don’t just ask the customer one time, go back to their corner, develop for 6 months, then release and find out it’s not what the customer want. Most of the time the customer doesn’t even know what he or she wants. Good engineers show their progress to the customer constantly, and let the customer give constant feedback for the iterations. I think ‘skill-based’ is a misnomer.

Every game is ‘skill-based’. They just require different skills.

Time is a river.

it means the game revolves around using the #1 weapon skill to accomplish everything from riding the ‘Queensdale Champ Train’ to defeating massive world bosses to zerging mindlessly in WvWvW. its a “SKILL-based game” and that skill is auto-attack.

Pretty much having the opposite experience. The density of mobs combined with the lack of incentive or requirement to kill them means that if you ever fall behind the zerg for even a second, you may as well just start over. Or walk away from the whole thing. Very frustrating experience so far.

So, now it’s time to deploy my analysis and criticism of Scarlet. Thanks again to the ArenaNet devs for this opportunity for discussion, and in particular to Bobby for his continued engagement with this thread.

Anyway, my general dislike for Scarlet has been fairly public, although unlike many such people, I do think she’s redeemable (as a character, not as a Heel Face Turn subject). Here are the things I think weaken her story, and what I think would help in improving her or, in cases where it’s already too late, help prevent similar mistakes in the past:

1: She does everything.

A large part of the “Villain Sue” reaction has come from the short story, which presents her as being an expert in, basically, everything that’s relevant to engineering, from every race apart from humanity (which she picked up in Jubilee…). Part of the reason for this is that it feels like unnecessarily inflating the character to make her more powerful.

Given what we know of her story, here are the elements that were actually necessary:

1) She’s a sylvari, and doesn’t like the idea of the Dream telling her what to do.

2) She was an impressive enough engineer, and has such a strong interest in knowing how things work, that she caught the attention of the College of Synergetics, and studied with them.

3) She then proceeded to work with the Inquest, confirming her lack of general morality.

4) She undertook an experiment to probe the true nature of the Eternal Alchemy that flipped her crazy switch.

Studying at the other two colleges is filler that just seems to be there to make her appear more impressive – and throwing in stuff that serves no purpose except to pump up a character is a classic Mary-Sue trait. Likewise, becoming an expert in norn metallurgy and charr engineering was not only unnecessary (a basic grounding in the latter can pretty much be considered assumed knowledge for any engineer) but also missed the opportunity of having more characters. Instead of being Beigarth’s apprentice herself, she could have won Beigarth’s disgruntled apprentice to her cause as a metallurgist. Instead of studying under a charr gladium who became so angry at her leaving that the gladium tried to coerce her into remaining by force, why not recruit the gladium that’s desperate for a new warband? Extend this into the story arcs as well (maybe she had an infiltrator on the watchknight production line that installed backdoors, for instance) and we could have a full Rogue’s Gallery.

2: She’s forming these strange alliances on a whim, and our explanation as to how have generally been “Scarlet did it”.

This is essentially the Scarlet-specific side of the “extrapolation is good” angle.

To be fair, the signs in the current update indicate that this time around, we ARE getting explanations as to why this particular alliance has formed and how Scarlet pulled it off. However, this has been the exception to the rule. Despite having had an Aetherblade captain in custody for months, we still have no idea how the Aetherblades formed (except that they have, or had, some alliance with the Inquest) or just why they’re so afraid of Scarlet (“They work for me, you know, because they like living!”). Going back, we have the Molten Alliance – there was a lot of speculation back during F&F of how such an alliance could have formed without needing an external party at all, but what we got at the time was that it was brokered by some snake-faced, silver-tongued woman from the city (that turned out to be Scarlet). At the moment, the only explanation we’ve been given for either is “She is Scarlet, whom all evil factions are sufficiently charmed and/or terrified by to do whatever she wants.”

Let us know how she does that. Did she form the Molten Alliance through pointing out to the dredge and Flame Legion leaders that they both had common enemies united against them that were sure to defeat them unless they formed alliances in turn? Is she blackmailing the Aetherblades by threatening to reveal all their hideouts to the Pact? Knowing these things would help to flesh out both Scarlet and the forces that serve her.

(cont.)

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

WvW Solution: Alt Unfriendliness

We have some thing that will be in the tests for the new map that will help WvW be more alt-friendly. We will talk more about it as we get closer to the test actually beginning.

It’s not rocket surgery. There is pretty much only one acceptable solution, and that is account wide rank. Pretty much everything else falls short.

Here’s an idea folks. Maybe if we ask questions with some measure of civility instead of just trying to bash him about our complaints , we MIGHT get some answers?

And maybe, just maybe if we aren’t openly hostile all the time he might continue posting in this forum with the regularity that he used to?

C’mon people. This is an opportunity. Don’t blow it.

Here are the answers.

Please deal with Server pop?
We know server pop is a issue we are thinking about some ideas. When we have something concrete we will let people know.

Are you open to taking out Orbs?
Our metrics indicate that orbs are a great mechanic and people love fighting for orbs and it adds a fun aspect to wvw. Orbs are staying.

WvW rewards?
Leagues will increase rewards in wvw with new achievements. Rewards will be tied to whichever server you start the season with.

Season 1 please stop leagues.
We are open to suggestions and feedback during season 1 and will adjust season 2 if needed. We need season 1 to give us data.

This class is op that class is op.
We are balancing classes in the upcoming match and wvw is a priority for us.

Orbs have ruined GvG and open field fighting, do you agree?
GvG did violate my game mode so I violated the game mode back. Now we are even.

No sense of satisfaction or ‘fun’ from completing the encounter? Only disappointment from the loot? How sad. Better looting next time, I hope.

It’s fun the first time you beat him, but with crud loot there is no reason to join the fight again after you do all the achievements. Once other content updates roll in ppl will give up on him and it’ll be a dead event, like the old karka queen.

And all of the exotics turn into pumpkins @ September 3rd.
Surely Ascended weps will cost a nice chunk of gold. And it would be kinda okay if we needed just One weapon, but we have multiple weapons for different purposes/specs, and upgrading them will be very long and grindy.
I can already see many ppl saying “Well, you don’t HAVE to get them, exotics are still exotics”. And there was a similar talk when Ascended tier itself arrived, but these are Weapons, they don’t only have stats, but also weapon damage, so if you want to be good, you Have to upgrade, many times. (And probably forget about specs that need different stat combos)
How is this not a GRIND of all grinds? And as I remember GW2 ‘’manifesto" saying "There won’t be any grind in our game, grinding is not fun and noone likes it", I gotta say that someone has no respect for their promises.

P.s. I Really hope I am mistaken in all of this and this implementation won’t cause more problems than the ‘advantages’ it gives. And I see it only as anoher-carrot-on-a-stick to keep people playing and grinding for something. Uh.
