SAB vs. crab

You really can’t compare both

But you can compare them. Seeing how popular the SAB was, I think you should compare them, because Crab Toss (imho) could have been a lot more successful if it had used some of the SAB principles.

SAB:

  • Difficulty modes, players could progress at their own pace
  • Varied achievements, something for everyone
  • Play with/against friends – friendly and fun environment
  • Guaranteed special rewards, plus chance for weapon skins
  • Very popular

Crab Toss:

  • Steep learning curve, high potential for frustration
  • Few achievements, catering mostly to players who succeed at Crab Toss already
  • Play with/against strangers – risk for hostile environment
  • Guaranteed ordinary rewards
  • Only half as popular as it could have been

My conclusion: with some minor adjustments, Crab Toss could have been a lot better, or at least a lot less of a source of frustration to half the GW2 population:

  • Difficulty modes for learning to play(number of players, or karkas on/off mode)
  • More varied achievements (denying, evading, use of tools…)
  • Option to play with friends to avoid risk of hostilities
  • Tokens and/or chance for sklerite skins, or other exclusive rewards

The last point is obviously inspired by wishful thinking, but even without it, Crab Toss would have been so much better. Exclusive rewards makes people suffer through more frustration, but they don’t alleviate the frustration, which should be the primary goal.

A longer, more thought out version of this ^ is here: What we can learn from Crab Toss – and I would love some more feedback on this, so anybody heading over to that thread and and sharing their thoughts is my hero.

When SAB ended I was like: oh, too bad it ended, that was fun, can’t wait to see more of it. But crab tossing… when I got my last achievement I was like “thank god I dont need to play this ever again”. It was the worst and most annoying minigame I’ve seen in a MMO.

It could be named crap tossing. The minigame sucks and the rewards suck even more.

"More Than An Expansion's Worth of Content"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Maz.8604

So today, I saw this

Since the launch of Guild Wars 2, NCSOFT and ArenaNet have released more than an expansion’s worth of content, regularly hosted special events like Halloween, Lost Shores and Wintersday, introduced players to the retro-goodness of the Super Adventure Box, and engaged players with the Living World philosophy, all the while continually updating and tweaking the game experience. There are record numbers of people playing Guild Wars 2 and the recent WvW and PvP updates are just the first drops in a shower of new updates.

Emphasis mine.

Which brings to mind a certain eight year running MMO that just released an expansion around the time GW2 came out, which had several new zones, a new class, a new race, dungeons, raid content, etc, etc. It seems far meatier in simple terms of content and overall development effort than what what GW2 has released, and not only that, but substantively and permanently added to the game world itself.

Then, I remembered this

Saying something like “expansions worth of content” means different things to everyone, and is nearly an impossible goal to meet expectation wise since everything expects something different, which is a big part of why marketing stepped away from that plan very quickly after asking us to use it when speaking to the press/fans.

Just to point this out, it seems like you are still hyping up your achievements post-launch beyond their scope. People do have a fairly commonly accepted idea of what is worthy of being an expansion, and if what you plan on releasing as a paid expansion is of the same scope as the updates we have gotten so far, I think it would be a poor consumer decision to purchase it.

Point of adds with no loot?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Boyd.5438

what is the point of having mobs/adds which drop no loot?

how is killing a tough mob and getting nothing back 100% of the time fair?

we are not botters, we dont use third party software. we play it like everyone else does.

why are the anti botting/3rd party software issues affecting regular players?

when i bought this game it was stated that we can play however we want, however we desire as is. but now why implement changes that silently redirects us to the point of doing things the “Anet” way or the “QQer’s” way?

everytime a patch comes, its always because someone cannot handle certain portions of the game which was here for months. always a complain then nerf on some other class because they think its unfair. why so biased? why others can handle it and overcome but you guys complain and find a way to get a nerf?

why is there always a nerf? why is there no boost?

i rarely post on forums. exploits in my dictionary means editing memory values etc to do things that are not allowed in game.

i have just learned that farming is also an “exploit”. so what do we actually do in this game to achieve something we want? like getting a legendary or trying to fill up bank with 250 of every material? just to feel some sort of accomplishment?

can Anet and most of the “Jealous” population leave everyone else alone and let it go?

who is benefitting from things getting “nerfed” ? sure as hell players are not.

not every player have moms and dads with a silver/gold bar plugged in all their holes since birth. people that work and have a family to care for cant afford to drop gold bars in game to enjoy content/playing.

sincerely, at the rate this is going, what is going to be nerfed to oblivion next?

to be fair to all players, i suggest that anet makes a change where every single PvE area is changed to 0 loots. give a chest to players as daily. only 1 of each mat per day per map. lodestones etc only in dungeons also in chest. every mob everywhere drops nothing.

well why? isnt that what this nerfing is all about?

Arenanet, I really want to give this game a few more years, and I will say now that of course I will not quit. But at this rate I cannot enjoy logging in and doing events that are not rewarding. MMOs are supposed to be FUN, yes. But FUN can mean different things to people. And I’m very confident that people find being rewarded FUN. So here is my suggestion in order for you to keep that playerbase that ENJOYS farming and ENJOYS being rewarded for their time

1.) Stop nerfing events – I don’t know what your motives are for nerfing them – perhaps to get players to do other content? Perhaps to encourage people to be less wealthy in-game and get encouraged to spend on the shop? I don’t know, but it’s a losing cause since it’s a natural thing for MMOs.

2.) Make the whole map rewarding. There is a reason why the earlier zones are dead. They are not rewarding! If it were only possible to make 100% of the drops in those zones equal to your level then people would play there! I’d play there!

3.) Make events more rewarding loot-wise – If we players had knowledge of several events across the map that were rewarding to farm, I’m sure many would do it. I’d do it. There comes a point where one event gets too saturated with players that it isn’t rewarding anymore.

4.) Get rid of those silly mobs that don’t drop loot. I don’t know whose idea it was to change the loot table of spiderlings to 0, but it was a dumb move. You spend a minute beating on a veteran, maybe 2 on a champ spider, only to have 5 little spiderlings come out and pull you across the ground. And you try and dodge and fight them off and end up with zero loot? That is NOT fun!

In closing, Arenanet, please do the smart thing and stop making things less rewarding in this game. You have a great game that justifies the sales but you are just souring on those players who have been with you since August.

tldr: Stop nerfing farming since it’s a player choice, farmers will just find the next best thing. Next thing you know, all events are nerfed to the ground and nothing end-game wise will be rewarding.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vol.5241

tldr at bottom

Arenanet,

I liked this game
I’ve been playing this game since release and for the longest time I’ve been your supporter of this fine game. I’ve played most of the content in this game (with exception of sPvP) over 2000 hours and have spent close to $1000 in gems to show my appreciation. I can tell you that this game has been well worth my money and time.

But the changes you have made in the past 5 months have made me very disappointed. I want to play this game for years, but you are making it harder for me to continue playing this game and enjoying it. It’s no coincidence that I have not spent a single $ since December on gems.

I’m sure it is your objective to improve this game so much that people will want to keep playing but I feel you making misguided changes in regards to farming.

Content is not the issue
I have no gripes about the content of the game. Living Story is a fantastic idea and you are implementing it well. I’m not particular into dungeons, but I find that you provide a wide variety of atmospheres and difficulties to satisfy that crowd. WvW of course is loved/hated, but most of my memories in game have come from exciting WvW matches. I’m confident that will improve.

But I’m very disappointed in the decisions to make content less rewarding each month. Constant nerfs to events that are efficient for the playerbase to farm are changed to make it less rewarding. First you nerfed plinx, which was a very popular karma chain but you changed the cooldown time significantly to the point that very few people do it now. Then came the shelt/pen nerfs – through the veteran/champion introductions and then recently the veteran/champion buffs plus loot-less spiderlings (honestly, who wants to beat on a spider for 2 minutes and get not even 1 copper or a porous bone?). Then came the grub farming event at the shores, which probably didn’t even need a nerf since if it got too popular, mobs would die too fast and no one would get any loot!

And now once again, the newest farming point, Lyssa, has been nerfed to the ground. Wraiths apparently don’t drop anything anymore. It’s not a coincidence that the single best reason for this farm was t6 dust came from Wraiths – and they got nerfed.

MMOs and farming go together. You cannot have an MMO that has zero farming. Farming is a PLAYER choice. People who choose to farm are doing content which is most efficient for them. Farming certain events rewards you with the most gold per hour you invest in game. No one will want to do an event that is not rewarding enough. Players will ALWAYS look for the most efficient place to get rewarded. Just look at two of those events that I mentioned. Grub farming and Lyssa farm were both there since release, available to farm. There were no content changes at all that made it profitable to do in the past few months. The only reason why we learned about these events was because players sought out the next best event to farm. After shelt/pen was nerfed to the ground, people on Sea of Sorrows started to notice that grubs was a great farm. So I spread the news to Yaks Bend and it started to gain traction. When the grubs got nerfed, I heard that Lyssa was the best place to farm, so I went there. And I’m confident that now that Lyssa farm is gone, all these people will go to Southsun to farm until it’s gone. After that, someone is going to find the next best place, whether that is in Malchor or FSG.

So Anet, your never-ending battle against people who want to be efficient and farm is a lost cause. You can keep nerfing these events to the ground until you end up with a bunch of events in end-game zones that are not rewarding anymore. Suddenly, new players will look around them at seasoned players and want to get all their shiny weapons and armor. But when they try and do events, they wonder how in the world can they afford that stuff? When loot drops are scarce?

…..
So you know (history lesson incoming): There was a time in balance when Necromancers were the apex class for mulitple specs in the game. They were the best tanks (death shroud building + wells giving protection, while also wiping condies), had some of the best mobility (their old Death Shround #2 was a ground targeted teleport!) and they had insane damage/boon ripping with Axe-based bunker killing hybrid builds.

And as always, we don’t want to do crazy increases followed by large decreases. We are employing metered changes as opposed to a ‘whack-a-mole’ approach.

Sorry for no response until now, been out of the office a few weeks to see family.

Mr. Sharp,

Thank you for taking the time to address this thread that other staff have seen and ignored up to this point. I really do appreciate the effort that you personally make to be in the communication loop with the community.

With that said…

If there was EVER a time that Necromancer was the apex class in Conquest, then it had to have been in closed testing that I never saw. During the open Betas I was there and saw when Necromancer was strong before it got nerfed into the dirt. It was good, but still not in a state that I would describe as “Apex” by any stretch of the imagination. I hope you were not referring to the open beta-nerf time frame of Necromancer, because the changes that were made to the game after that were exactly the types of changes that I assume you would like to avoid. What remains to be said is that after that point in time Necromacer was NEVER particularly strong, but was acceptable because they had unrivalled boon stripping (which is no longer the case and why they are arguably Warrior Tier or worse at this point).

Tweaks need to be made to necro in at least 2 of the 3 below to make them viable again.
1) DPS – Shroud 5 getting another DoT will help the lack of condition diversity that necro’s currently suffer for, but it can’t just be on shroud 5 with a long cd. You have to find another place to stick it too. Alternatively, you could buff some of the weapon skill base damages and stop pretending that it would be OP because of minions. A single weapon that has any kind of burst potential wouldn’t be a bad thing.

2) Sustainability – Every class in this game has better damage mitigation and sustainability than necro by a mile, and Death Shroud is an absolutely miserable compensation for that, the amount of boons, blocks, evades, endurance boosting traits, etc. that every other class has more than make up for their lack of an extra HP bar. I don’t ever want to hear “but you have Death Shroud” again. This simply is not good enough and everyone that has played the game knows it. If you are going to leave Necromacer defenseless in terms of blocks, evades, invulns, etc. then Life force generation needs a huge boost.

3) Mobility – C’mon man. Necro’s move like old people … well, ya know.

Oh so because Necros were extremely powerful before release we can now be left below the power curve?
That balances it out?
Because really, that’s what the first post reads like.

I may sound very frustrated, that’s because I am, since Necros have been complaining about mobility/survival since release without any address, apparently because a version that was seen by a small minority months before release was very powerful.

The Necro forums has been filled to the brim with every kind of imaginable balance fix for the profession. Really just read the topics and pick what you don’t feel would be too OP, it’s almost all better than the current package.

We’ve posted threads with systematic analyzes about trait/skill/utility distributions and how everything is a mess.

Did you know we have 9 traits dedicated to minions, 2 of which are minors?
Only 1 trait for corruption skills which is -20% cd?
No traits that work on underwater weapons?

Attrition – A pretty name for taking longer than anyone else to kill something.

Hey all! Just wanted to say thanks for keeping this thread so positive and constructive. The balance guys and I are watching this thread, and we’ve really enjoyed some of the ideas you guys are putting out.

So while we do want to help the Necro to see more play in competitive builds (both in variety of roles and variety of builds), we are being very careful not to give them too much. We will be adjusting them just like all the other classes, and I just wanted to let you guys know we ARE watching threads like this.

The same can be said for Warriors in TPvP, non shortbow-based Thieves, different specs for Engi that are weak, etc. etc. We want all classes to have multiple options, so that’s what we’ll be looking for in upcoming balance changes. This will happen through number adjustments (the multipliers on specific skills), through skill “toolbox” adjustments (like we did with S/D Thief removing boons) and through trait adjustments (Warrior changes to counter condies + boons).

And as always, we don’t want to do crazy increases followed by large decreases. We are employing metered changes as opposed to a ‘whack-a-mole’ approach.

Sorry for no response until now, been out of the office a few weeks to see family.

thats great and all except you have been saying since release and yet still most classes only have 1 or 2 viable specs for pvp and a bloat of traits that are worthless for both pvp and pve

i mean for necro as is, minion AI is still terrible, axe still sucks, lifesteal builds still suck. what has change since they were the apex? nothing.

This month will be focused on bug fixes, with balance coming in later patches!

You overnerfed the necro and we have to wait almost a year for a balance. You are afraid of giving necros too much and we got stuck with several awful traits and mechanics… it seems unfair to me.

we need the same atenttion rangers and engis got when they begged for a helping hand.

please listen all the suggestions on the necro forum and take note on all bugs we have had since launch.

Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods. Gambling thus requires three elements be present: consideration, chance and prize.

i’d say it is safe to assume that 99.9% of the reason they are buying them is because they want the weapon skins…that does have a chance of not showing up, so for the weapon skin…it is gambling

Consideration: You have the choice of choosing to buy chests, or not to buy them.
Chance: It is not 100% that you will get a weapon skin
Reward: Weapon Skin

it is indeed gambling, only for the weapon skin however
