It is not a random number. This thread was made as a result of server overload during the build day (when our login numbers are through the roof). We also explained that sometimes during build days it just needs a little time to catch up.

urieldhynne.2743, I completely understand your frustration. We would all love it if we could spend our time reading the forums and responding to feedback, but the reality of the situation is there are just not enough hours in the day to do that and develop the game, so we have to have a balance.

The Collaborative Development threads are a huuuuuuuge help for us to see what the consensus is from the community on the state of the game. It puts your feelings into 3 short suggestions that you would like to see implemented, which means we can read through them faster and get a better idea of how the majority is feeling.

I don’t mean to say that your efforts have gone unnoticed, because they haven’t. It just makes our lives much easier when your feedback is concise.

Sorry for the confusion, everyone. Just to reiterate what Devon said, the queue itself is not broken. When you enter the queue, you will move through it properly, but the display sometimes doesn’t reflect that when the servers are experiencing a high amount of traffic like on build days.

The queue is not broken. It shows approximate positions, and at times like the reset it won’t be as accurate as the number of people logging in simultaneously can cause it to update incorrectly. Once you move through the queue, the positions tend to be corrected.

edit: I’ve talked to a lot of people personally, and the feelings are mixed. I’d say it’s actually close to 50/50. Regardless, talking to random people is not a real metric for the consensus of the playerbase.

Look, we know how passionate some of you feel about this, which is why I’m talking to you about it and why we’re looking into options for what we can do.

Just because we don’t have any plans to remove skyhammer from solo arena right now, doesn’t mean we aren’t kicking around ideas. I can’t get into much detail about it, but we’re trying to figure out how to measure it’s effect on solo arena.

Unfortunately, one straw poll of 300ish people is a very, very small amount of our active player base. It may not seem like we have many people playing because we are all spread over different servers, but our active numbers are much, much bigger than that.

What I meant by behind the scenes, is that I am coordinating the PvP/WvW/Balance community effort, and Josh will be focusing on other things. I didn’t want to say he’s leaving, because he’s not (refer to his post in here). He’s all about the PvP. We’re not “losing him to PvE”. Sorry if that sounded ominous.

We will be removing all rank requirements for the Gift of Battle in the February 18th build and further evaluate what those requirements will be. We do not currently have an ETA for when rank requirements will be reinstated.

Josh isn’t gone, but his focus will be shifted. I’m not taking his job, he was actually filling in for me while I was gone. He’ll be around, and with us on Ready Up still, just won’t be as active on the forums or behind the scenes.

As for skyhammer in solo arena, we’re kicking around some ideas (definitely not ignoring you guys, just fyi). As of right now, we have no plans to remove it. We’re not quite convinced yet that the majority of our pvp population want it gone, so we’re trying to get metrics on that before we make any changes.

Hey PvPers!

I just wanted to let you all know that I will be AFK for a few months to handle some personal things. It’s been an absolute blast (I mean it!) promoting all of your awesome content and feedback, and I’m positive that I will miss these forums and all other aspects of my job until I come back.

I’m not asking the designers, I’m asking you. These are all questions that we ask ourselves internally, and are a huge part of development. I’m trying to help you analyze this situation without bias, and with the overall health of the game in mind. This is what we do.

It feels like you’re saying there will always be leavers, so we should just let them run rampant and stop caring. Is that wrong?

I’m not denying that disconnects feel bad, but other players are being punished by people leaving these matches. If this is one step in the direction of reducing the amount of leavers, should it not be taken?

Here’s another interesting question: If this change was something that was always a part of the game since launch, would it still be bad? I know it’s hard to think without bias, especially when many of us have been playing the game for a very long time, but try to imagine what it would be like if this were always the case.

But if it’s supposed to also act as a place for new players to learn PvP, is it not setting a bad example for them with all the leavers?

I’m just trying to understand – do you guys think this is bad for the health of the game? Or is it just bad because you want to rank up without playing the full match? You want to leave the match without being punished?

People say hot join is bad because it’s a FFA, but this change takes an aspect of that discord away by encouraging players to care more about playing the full game. Or am I completely off-base here?

I think the current HJ format is perhaps a bit too “random”.
Growing HJ as it is is bad from a “competitive PvP/rules/skills” standpoint, but good from a “population” point of view (so overall, I would say it is still a positive thing if HJ is growing, as more population = more fun).
I would like to see some changes to HJ, I’m not sure about the priority over other changes though.

When you have experienced the more “intelligent” soloQ/tPvP, HJ feels a bit of a let down sometimes.
I still play HJ from time to time, though, but the best HJ games are the ones ending with the teams scores very close to each other, when there was an actual challenge winning.

People should be allowed to leave the game in the middle of it (and get points for leaving during a game as well, frankly), as I don’t think that because 1-2 people left or joined that the game becomes imbalanced and that you lose 100-500.
I think that the main problem with HJ is that teams aren’t balanced by player level (as people can chose their teams, this can create huge imbalances) – people “hot joining” isn’t the problem, for me the dispatching system is the problem.

Maybe it is desirable for people to be able to chose their team manually so that they can play together? I don’t know.

Sure, I totally get where you’re coming from. I think the context here is that players are saying that the change we made to hot join is bad because they want to still earn rewards even if they leave the match early.

What I am asking is whether or not these changes made to hot join could actually make hot join a better place for new players. What I’m asking is whether making changes to hot join, away from what it currently is, could be better for the health of PvP. What I am not saying is that we are trying to build a playerbase on the current system.

Also, to add to what you are saying “the best HJ games are the ones ending with the teams scores very close” – is it not difficult to achieve that type of game when people are coming and going as they please?

We’ve had tons of threads and players upset about leavers in tPvP, but why should it be ok for people to randomly leave hot join?

These are questions I hope you are all asking yourselves when you share your feedback about this change here.

It depends on what aspect of sPvP you’re trying to grow.

Growing the Hot Join Only playerbase isn’t exactly healthy for the game. Hot Join should not be the mode that is the most rewarding when considering an equal time investment. This is counter-intuitive to its intended role as a mode to ease players into the officially supported gamemode of 5v5 Conquest.

My suggestion is to change their official names to Practice Arenas to reflect their actual usage in the sPvP realm. They should be something that people can use to jump in, test their builds, jump out, and get rewarded for whatever they accomplish in that time, as was the case in the previous reward model.

Solo Queue and Team Queue, however, need to have their reward models revamped to completely overshadow whatever you can achieve in the same amount of time in Practice Arenas. Because this is the gameplay that the classes, skills and builds are balanced around, and until a new player has experienced these modes, you can’t honestly claim they have contributed anything positive to the health of sPvP.

Growing hot join is bad, why? Because of the way the format is? What if changes were made to the format to alter your opinions of it? Or are you saying that there is no possible way that hot join could ever be good for the game?

If hot join is a mode to ease players into PvP, why is it a bad thing that we are discouraging people from leaving the game in the middle?

Common legitimate use cases that this change negatively affects include:

-Playing in Hot Join while waiting for solo/team queue now rewards essentially no glory because it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to finish a match before queue ends. Even if you do finish your first match, the early half of your next match would likely reward nothing.

-Players with flaky connections dc’ing before end of match will not be rewarded glory for anything they accomplished before that point, even if they connect back before match ends.

But more importantly, this change doesn’t put nearly enough of a dent in those disgusting glory farm servers that can still gain glory at many times the rate of regular play.

Ban the server owners and anyone who has spent more than a dozen hours in those servers since their introductions (I’m being generous with the definition of willful exploitation here).

This is an exploit that completely destroyed whatever pitiful value Glory, the only currency sPvP players had access to, had remaining. Please deal with it with at least a fraction of the gravitas that you have demonstrated for exploits that devalue gold and undermine the PvE economy.

Frankly this double standard you have shown so far on this issue speaks volumes on how seriously you guys really take sPvP as a game mode.

We realize that the change is only a band-aid for any exploiting that’s happening, which is why we are looking into other options for that specifically (I literally can’t give any more details than that, as we see the number of players participating in this increase when we do share more).

What if this change was thought of not as an exploit fix, and more of a change to hot joins to improve them? How would you feel about it in that case?

Is it possible that this change could help to improve hot join in the long run, though? Just curious what your thoughts are, without bias. I know the feeling of disappointment when something is taken away, but I’d like to know if you think this change could actually help the growth of PvP.

From what I understand, people are upset that they can’t come and go from hot join and still be rewarded before the match ends. If hot join is the place where new players are learning PvP, is it healthy for people to be coming and going as they please? Is it good to promote that habit?

Instead of anet listening to people who have a deep connection to the game they play, you guys seem to listen, instead, to the players who whine about how their main class is bad at pvp (or is too hard to play in pvp) and so they need to be buffed. In other words, exactly the opposite of what you said in your initial post. So we get a game that seems, at least to me, sponsored by Kraft where the top builds are the cheesiest in the game.

You say that there have been major changes, but if you guys were actually listening, the major consensus is that there was NO major changes to the meta outside of immob stacking. The same cheese builds are still significantly viable. The only major changes are cosmetic ones involving trait selection – thats it.

Couple things: first, we do listen to top players, and many of the things we’ve implemented are things they have asked for as well.

Second: you say that the major consensus is that there were no major changes. Yet, in this same thread, you criticize us for listening too much to the 90%. This is very confusing messaging. You’re telling us that we should listen to a select few for balance, but then listen to the majority when they say there was no balance.

I also want to point out that a cosmetic change that brings major awareness to what traits actually do can help players to better understand those traits and therefore create new builds in a more informed manner. Sometimes a change looks one way on the surface, but deep down is more elaborate.

All of those suggestions and Ventrilo talks are not necessarily posted on the forums though.
I dunno. I think many of the knows players have been active on the forum at least. I know I have seen both Xeph and Phantaram post and Helseth (who does not have access to the forum), even had followers to post his rants and suggestions.

I am not a top player nor am I a developer, but I don’t think there has been a lack of suggestions.

  • Lower the damage
  • Play smart (less spam)
  • Risk vs. reward
  • Obvious animations and less instant casts to give options for counter play.

Those I can remember from the top of my head, and I am certain there are many more.

Yes, at times some of these players have made posts, and we acknowledge those posts or follow them very closely every time.

Just to clarify: I’m not saying all top players don’t bother to talk to us. Most of them come and go, but haven’t shown up consistently for quite some time.

I’m also not blaming them for this either. They have lives, they have their frustrations with the state of the game, etc. Some of them continue to show up, and that is great.

Most of the 10% has direct access to the developers already. Some take advantage of it, most do not. We can’t control whether or not they give us feedback, but we definitely give them ample opportunity to do so.

We invite them to Ventrilo chats every week, btw.

I am sorry if this is common knowledge, I was certainly not aware that direct access exist between top players and the developers. I am glad that it does.

I wouldn’t exactly say it’s common knowledge, since you weren’t the only one who didn’t know. I believe Jonathan Sharp mentioned it at one point during a Guild Wars 2 Guru State of the Game discussion. I can’t remember which episode it was from, but they have uploaded all of the SotG videos, so you could watch them if you want!

I’m sorry if it has already been asked but has there been any discussion/any plan to create a public test server that is solely used to look at PvP balance changes?

A PTR is something that the PvP and WvW teams (especially) would definitely greatly benefit from. It is something that we have had many discussions about. The reality is that creating a PTR (code-wise) is an incredibly difficult task for our game. That’s not to say we have dismissed the idea, though.

you are listening but to the wrong players and its no surprise little to no top players arent you giving you feedback, you are just mindlessly making changes without even making an effort to talking to long term players before and after a patch.

And btw you can control if they are giving feedback by making an effort, by inviting them to Skype talks about balancing, you devs are making more and more excuses on how making time to make changes and Im sick of it tbh, talk to you players, COMMUNICATE, you arent doing that, YOU ARE THE DEVS we are not, you are the makers but for some reason you still think you are the masters of you own game in PVP, you arent playing countless of solo games or team games you are just observing, you need to TALK to your players and not just on the forums

There were restrictions at one point, but the system was not working and was fracturing the playerbase. One thing that I focus a lot on as the PvP Community Coordinator is helping to get external tournaments going. These tournaments tend to be where the hardcore/higher tier players will compete.

We’re happy to hear any suggestions you have that could help with this, without alienating a huge percentage of players. For now, I will continue to focus my efforts toward promoting the competitive community through tournaments run in custom arenas!

It surely couldn’t have been the part where I said we’ve had several discussions about it, or the part where I said we see the numbers jump when we say we’re addressing it, or the part where I said you’ll just have to trust we will protect our game…
