It is Phase Retreat.
It has to do with the the coding of walls and the map floor.
In concept:
Wall = 0 Where 0 =“You can’t pass through it” –
Phase Retreat = 0+1 Where +1 = “I go where I want because I am a Mesmer”
The issue isn’t on a player by player basis, it has to do with specific map sections that are lacking that variable. I can replicate in the same spot 1,000 times as an example.
Countless times I have phase retreated through walls in different zones and into the mysterious and underwater world of Guild Wars 5. I can swim forever unimpeded. Not much out in the big blue but this happens at least once a day. It seems that the code relating to objects on the map is trumped by the code in Phase Retreat.
Phase Retreat > World Map
This skill puts me below the layer of the map inhabited by players, npcs, nodes. You can however see most things. I have tried to swim back to a large body of water to see if I could “reconnect” into the main waterway system with no luck.
Also I cannot be attacked by NPC’s on this layer making it of the “game breaking variety” for obvious reasons.
