The issue with FB-healing is in the Guardian

Brutaly.6257

As the title says i think a lot of that we find missing in FB is in fact a reflection of what the core guardian lack.
Lets break down some of the issues with FB.

PvP/Roaming in wvw:
It is clunky and easily interruptible
It lacks melee sustain since it have no bubbles
It lacks easy to access self sustain (like medis)
It lacks mobility (disengage and engage primarily)

Large scale WvW:
Its clunky and easily interruptible
It lacks ranged weapon options so it can be close right behind the melee train. Doing damage AND supporting
It lacks melee sustain since it have no bubbles
It lacks mobility (disengage and engage)
Not enough heals for being a valid healer option.

Open world PvE:
Seriously strong and probably the best farmer/tagger around. I will run this in pve, it’s a beast.

Fractals and raids:
Lack sustained dps on bosses compared to vanilla and DH, have huge aoe burst though.
Bring nothing unique that other professions cant do better other aegis/stab spamming.
Give up all dps when using ToC and ToR. We sacrifice damage for support and its fine, but i know its not fine for high end pve.
Not enough heals

Overall:
Still the best elite is RF for renewing the tomes.

Solution:
Increase passive VoR with 100%
Increase active VoR with 200%

Fix staff as a working weapon in all game modes. Just copy some of the water skills ele has and we are good to go.

Move the passive effect from the trait “loremaster” to “Absolute Resolution”

The above would address some of the core issues and when traiting for FB/DH this will enhance the FB/DH as well.

Loremaster is changed so it reduces skills cooldown with 33% AND the cooldown on the tomes with 30-50%. Keep the tome cd as they are but give us a mean to reduce the cd.

Make tomes instant casts. Keep the skills as they are. The option to reduce cd dramatically will make the tomes stronger. And if you want the even stronger just use RF as the elite skill.

We got combofields in all the tomes but no finishers. Easy solution is to add a blast finisher to skill 2 in all the tomes. Then it would be possible to have a water field up and by swapping tomes trigger it three times. Healing issue solved, great at stacking might even though some what lackluster in the light field but i can live with that.
This solves the entire issue we have with poor healing.

Make Mantra of flame a 600 teleport that gives you swiftness 10 seconds and a x% speed in revival speed for x sec, great synergy with honor.. A 45 sec CD. This would add mobility which increases both survivability and the ability to support allies. Tbh I think is the most important part of FB, they need to fix the ability to support and heal and mobility is crucial here since positioning with short range spells is key to success.

The elite mantra should reset and charge all mantras on the third step. This in combination with the changed Lore Master would make it possible to use this elite instead of renewed focus.

Make Mantra of Solace heal allies as well.

Mantras should work in 360 around the FB with 300 range. Or 600 range with the same cone as Shield #4.

Add a damage component to some/all skills in the tomes so FB at least can trigger Permeathing wrath och keep some sort of decent dps while using ToR and ToC in raids/fractals.

Firebrand needs more mobility

Brutaly.6257

One of the mantras (damage ones) should be a 600 teleport that could be used three times and also adding swiftness to allies. Considering the limited range on mantras and tomes it neccessay to be able to move around, especially in wvw/pvp where its close to impossible to predict enemy movements and sometimes the allies as well.

This alone would solve so many issues with the FB in its current iteration.

Forgot that you also can add i shield 4 for 3 more boons and 15 AH applications.

You can probably throw in something more in the 0,5 sec that is left.

Why not start the chain with shield 5 to push of point and a small heal and give space to start casting instants.

4 mantras 8 boon application (quickness exkluded) can be repeated 3 times in 2 seconds with a total of 32 boons. 5 players can be hit. 116 AH triggers for 7742 heals with 0 healing power. Add SyG with 6 boon applications which 30 AH for 2100 heals.

You can also trigger quickness at least 5 times for 25 more AH, 1850 more heals. Add in casting tome of justice for 4 more boons and 20 AH and 1400 more heals.

How much is that?

Doesnt mattor what they said on the stream. I used all the mantras in pvp except the offensive ones (which do have cone damage) and all of them give boons to allies behind me. No matter what tooltips or streams have stated.

I use a burnbuild with AH use 4 mantras and SyG (extra stun break, stability, quickness and in total 7 applikations of boons that trigger. With 2 allies that heals for 1k. Add in the support mantras, the elite and healing mantra and er are talking about over 10k self heals that can be casted in 2sec.

Stop watching streams and play the game ????

The self sustain in FB in a proper group is very undeestimated, it is better then a medi build tbh. an Valor/virtues FB dont have to be carried at all and has serious condiburst as well.

With that said it needs some improvements to casting times etc. Support mantras might be bugged in beta but they all have 360 aoe.

Why not remove cd on all skills so they are only gated by the pages. And rework the trait that reduce cd on skills with 33% instead reduce cd on virtues with 33%.

Ofc balance some skills in Justice would be neccessary but it would do a ton of good for resolve and courage. The balance could be done by the amount of pages they use.

Add in the same amount of healing an engie can get while leaving Photon Forge but make it a burst when swapping, this could justify the casting time on tomes. Remember that Photon Forge is instant.

“When entering or leaving a Tome you gain quickness and heal allies in a 600 range for X amount”

This would also add to some of the lackluster skills in ToR.

Btw holosmith was hysterical compared to the old engie, super fun. Great design even though OP as hell atm.

But all of them isnt cones tbh even though the text says they are, might be an hotfix during the beta but this morning i hit stuff/allies behind me with them. Its only mantra of truth/flame that uses the cone. Solace has an animation but gives aegis behind you granting quickness.

If they just fix the damaging mantras to aoe they are imo good to go.

I also like it a lot, it feels very nice/promising tbh.

If they just fix casting times on tomes and the cone on mantras to 360 300 range it will be really fun to play. Also i find Shouts to have great synergies with FB and the first build i seen that can actually do with out medis. Welcome back honor/radiance.

Brutaly.6257

1. Make tomes instant
2. leave Justice as it is , its fine.
3. Buff healing in skill 1 and 2 in ToR.
4. Add a damage component in skill 1 in ToR
5. Rework skill 3 and add in the swiftness it gives in to skill 4 in ToR.
6. Add a damage component to skill 1 in ToC.
7. Remove all kinds of CD:s on the tomes so we can change book according to situation. If this is done i think both ToC and ToR just needs minor tweaks. If you keep the current system with long cd:s you need to buff both ToR and ToC by a lot.

8. Just let the “pages” be for all tome-skills. 7 pages untraited, 12 pages traited and add in traits for gaining/recover pages. Like “Gain a page when swapping to an other Tome”

A valor/honor build (direct damage) is also an option with SyG and Retreat and trait for quickness in FB. Use only shouts besides the heal. Shelter gives blocks which valor converts to quickness:. Add in trooper runes and SA and your 4 shouts remove 8 condis, Teo stun breakers, and 3 of them give quicknes. The heal grant quickness when and when you block.

This is miles better compared to the mantras. Say hello support guard.

I also played virtues/honor/fb with all shouts (besides heal) but it gets a bit to fragile on my skill level.

Trailblazers all the way. Rune of the traveller
Valor (communal defense and AH, smiters boon would be in there as well but is bugged with mantras)
Virtues (Permeathing wrath, absolute resolution and master of consecrations)
FireBrand (Archivist of whispers, Legendary Lore and Loremaster)
Mantra of solace (selfish use impossible to hit the team with)
Mantra of Lore (selfish use impossible to hit the team with)
Mantra of Potence (selfish use impossible to hit the team with)
Purging flames
Renewed Focus (Elite mantra sucks big time and RF recharges the tomes)

The mantras has 0 use as support in the current iteration. The three i use adds self sustain though.

I have also tried with honor and traited shouts and valor with AH and FB. This would be a power setup and its pretty neat with mace and. Retreat and Stand your ground is super nice with traited quickness in FB. But you need to drop axe totally and go for power based weapons instead.

Any idea for a high condi damage build? Kinda like burn guard but at a Firebrand iteration?

Well FB has huge burst pontial but lower sustained burning compared to the vanilla guard. But what i posted is a burning guard. Sure you can swap valor for radiance and get even more but i need the sustain from AH in zergs.

Dont even try to roam with a FB, its useless and even a noob can kite it to death. Just let the FB burn the tomes and its game over.

I’m fine with it being bad in PvP if it’s strong in PvE, which it is, so stop complaining before you make it bad in both PvP and PvE.

Since the damage is lower then a vanilla burn guard i suspect it is the mediocre healing or spamming aegis that you find so incredible.

As a Guardian main since beta, these are my thoughts after playing Firebrand.

The Good:
-Pretty visual effects (if a bit overwhelming at times)
-Overall fire damage is good (to the point it will likely get nerfed)
-Team quickness uptime is good (possibly a trait bug – see below)
-Mantra skills are instant cast after the initial cast which helps to counteract the lack of instant virtues

The Bad:
-300 range frontal cone attacks. This times 1000. The positioning requirement feels like garbage mixed with the 130 range axe. These skills should be either circular PBAoE 300+ range (ideally) or 180° frontal with 450 range. I understand you wanted to differentiate them from Mesmer mantras in some way, but this is not the way.
-Pages and mantra charges make you play the UI. I was sitting there constantly looking at my skill bar tracking the white rings and page counts instead of playing the game and enemies.
-Tome CDs + Page Limit + Tome Skill CDs + Tome Skill Cast Times is severely flawed. One or several of these systems need to change.
-Axe skill 2 (symbol) provides no boon. It should (ideally) provide quickness in some form (per pulse might be too good).
-Axe bleed damage is very mediocre, even with throwing everything at it I can in sPvP (including the on hit trait and Sigil of Agony). This essentially puts it in a weak cover condi role. It’s duration needs to be massively buffed.
-The third mantra skill bonuses feel too weak to justify their use over letting them recharge ammo, especially on the elite. 5s swiftness and 2 extra stab stacks on the elite skill for 25s extra CD? Nope.
-Liberator’s Vow lacks synergy with Quickfire. Their cooldowns should be in line.
-Slow as a Grandmaster trait is lackluster. Slow as a condition is lackluster in general.
-I’d like to see Legendary Lore changed. It should provide something more substantial than simple boons/1 stack of burning at the major trait slot. Something like “+% outgoing healing while in Tome of Resolve” and “Allies affected by your Tome of Courage spells receive -% condi damage for x seconds” for example.

The ?:
Stalwart Speed currently applies quickness per stack of Stability. Unsure if this is intended (likely not).

TLDR: Overall this elite spec feels bad to play. Wonky positioning requirements, constantly playing the UI instead of the game, and slow gameplay, which is ironic for a spec designed around quickness.

P.S. Another major suggestion for Guardian and the game in general is to change the way regen works. It should prioritize the stacks with healing power over duration. Skills like Symbol of Faith (Mace 2) get overwritten by longer duration regen and severely limits our ability to do any substantial healing output.

P.P.S. – Fix staff

QFT

My own impression besides the above.

Remove casting times on the tomes, make them instant and promote a fast game play, its just to clunky.

Reduce CD on tomes of courage and resolve and let the pages be the gating. Why not just use the same cds as the vanilla virtues?

Reduce casting time on skill 2 on the axe, its just to slow.

You need to add in some sort of mobility, ideally a teleport on one of the mantras.

This just is to slow.

Even though people might think the burning needs a nerf i dont, you can stack even more on a vanilla guardian.

Might be a stupdi question but why is there casting/chargin on the mantras? I dont get the concept of casting a skill for over 2 s to access other skills when there is no limitations in time and number having multiple mantras charged.

PS I really like the concept of FB now you just have to make it playable. DS

Weird. It all worked fine before. Did they just break it? I remember using SoJ in the crowd of golems in Heart of the Mists and everyone gets 10 burning stacks through the passive SoJ burn and sharing Permeating Wrath with each other.

Might be that VoJ and the aoe effect of PW works but not the increased triggering from permeathing wrath.

I made a bug report concerning this and also about scaling with power that reduced the damage significantly. I also made a bug report regarding the SW shield which the tool tip says it has 1200 range. I assume its bugged since triggering the shield make it pop up on you and its not even centered.

Trailblazers and as much dire/celestial/Apothecary (depending on how healing scale) in trinkets as you need to reliably trigger Radiant Fire. With fast hitters like sword/torch you need about 12-15% to trigger reliably. But i will play it as condi tank in all game modes, probably not the way most people will play it.

Shield of the Avenger isnt ranged.

Brutaly.6257

SoA has a tooltip that says it has 1200 range but it doesnt. The reason why i call this a bug is:
All the other spirit weapons are ranged and casting times and cool downs on SoA also indicates that its a ranged skill

When you cast SoA it isnt centered around the character and to that is also an indication that it is bugged somehow. The placing of the radius also change from time to time.

While you are at it, add in that SoA also remove 3 condi, at its current state its not worth using since smite condition or purging flames are just better. Also increase the radius on Bow of Truth, its useless in anything but completely static fights.

As the title says, spirit weapons seem to only trigger Virtue of Justice passive (5 hits) but when traiting permeathing wrath it is not triggered.

Hammer of Wrath seem to not trigger Virtue of justice at all

Also the hammer and sword now scale with power (which is good) but in the process you lowered base damage so it less damage from SoJ/HoW even if you gear up.

The condition duration of axe is such a joke though, 2s seconds of bleeding on auto, when warrior sword does 8s and has a trait that increases it by 20%.

The difference is that warrior has bleeds as main condi and for FB it is a cover condi. FB does not need more bleeds.

Comparing apples and pears.

It’s not a cover condi, it’s part of its dps. Plus, warrior has plenty of burn with Berzerker.

Guardian, on the other hand had its VoJ cut in half.

The swords main condition for a war is bleeds. Guardian has a second (primary) tied to the axe, Why should we compare the war sword and the guardian axe?

Building a condi FB will never ever focus on having huge stacks of bleeding and balthazar runes will still be the way to go in any game mode. In pve it bleeds will be minor and in pvp and wvw it is a cover condi, nothing more.

Its apples and pears.

And the axe’s main condi is bleeding, so what’s your point?

  1. First skill chain could be: 1. Hit your foe 2. Hit your foe again and grant vigor (2-3 seconds – more frequent dodges so we don’t have to tank it up all the time) 3. Hit your foe for the third time and grant aegis to you and your allies (OR) Hit your foe for the third time and perform a 600 range cone that heals allies.
  2. Just a burst of heal and damage around you in 600 range
  3. So you tap your staff or smth, symbol as it is, but it follows you as you move and grant superspeed in the last second of the duration of the symbol (2s) (but only if traited – that’s more mobility for staff to kite instead tanking damage to the face against unblockable attacks)
  4. Let it heal as it is now, but now you can move around (at least whirling wrath speed)
  5. Ward’s cool as it is, solid skill.

I hope the devs read this, it would be a huge improvement.

(I would have been happy if one of our mantras was just a short range teleport).

I was actually thinking the exact thing this morning.

Why not making Mantra of Solace a 500+500+800 (numbers for illustration only) teleport and it heals in an aoe of the FB at the target area. Mantra with long casting as it is now and the teleports being instant.

This would also be a great compensation for the clunkiness in the tomes and casting times of the mantras.

This change alone would/could make it some what more pleasant to play in wvw and pvp.

EDIT: And it would also be one of the coolest skills in the game. I would drop my thief roamer for this tbh.

Pretty sure they gutted Staff simply because they’re too OP in WVW after the buff in several condition traits for Guardian.

A bunch of Guardians Spam 1 -> bunch of AOE burn on a whole zerg.

Maybe they should have just separate Staff 1 per game mode (WVW/PVP/PVE)

PS: Did a quick test in mist, by spamming staff 1, I can apply 13 stacks of burning to a whole group of Golems with cripple and 11 stacks of vulnerability. This is only the auto attack.

Now imagine a group of Guardians do that from 600 range with pve condition food in a zerg… There’s barely any counter-play since they ignore projectile reflection , hit a wide arc and can hit through obstacles/ walls.

its not the buffs to vanilla that is the issue.

Its the final trait in FB that messes this up in combination with the amount of quickness a FB can spew out. I done some math and with staff it would be possible to maintain over 20 stacks of burning with the auto alone if you build for quickness in FB and trait QuickFire. Add in purging flames and judges intervention and can pretty much burn 8k per second and also spike burst with burns, from range.

So basically perma 20 stacks burning, 15-17 stacks vulnerability and perma cripple would be possible. And who said we didn’t have cover condis :-)

The issue i have is that the nerf is imo needed but they did go about it the wrong way. Why not increase casting time and up direct damage greatly. This would reduce the impact of permeathing wrath.

Or narrow the cone and increase the range to 900. This would also be in line with other skills in the staff and also reduce the impact of permeathing wrath.

Or combine a narrow cone, more range with longer casting times.

The solution they picked just had to be the worst one. No i got one that’s even worse, deleting the auto from the skillbar, but it is marginally worse since it’s of no use in its current iteration.

Thanks for summarizing the issue in a clearer way.

I think it’s pretty obvious why they nerf it. The people who didn’t get the reason and still saying staff was underpowered probably never leave their power build and try condition Guardian even once.

I’m well aware the way they nerf it may not be the best one, I’m just saying some people were still clueless about why they nerf it, saying staff was always useless outside of tagging foes, which is kinda hilarious.

Why they do it is obvious when FB is released. The way they do it is just plain stupid.

Just curious, what do people use it for outside tagging mobs for loot?

Burnbuild/frontliner in wvw, it was the best dpsweapon we had in zergs. Trailblazer stats and you are good to go.

Mightstacking builds, with a proper build you could get very high uptime on >20 stacks of might and in soldiers with fury from your medis and extra boon duration it
hit for about 2k per wave.

The issue i think anet has recognized is that it would be crazy with perma quickness in condibuilds in particular. We are talking about >10 stacks burning on 5 opponents. Dealing 11k damage per second on 5 targets.

They should have narrowed the cone and increased direct damage instead.

Can’t it still do those things? I mean if you’re in the melee train, 300 range isn’t going to make too much difference.

Not in zerg versus zerg, in 300 you melt, its already difficult enough at 600.

And in melee versus melee the enemy lines are to thin for permeathing wrath to have sufficient impact and other weapons are more versatile considering none of the skills on the staff are made for melee. Hammer is better in melee versus melee in power builds.

Imo this breaks the part of the game where staff actually excelled. Midrange dps and support.

Hello

Here is an odd and selfish question/request.

I am a soloplayer in pve and i got tons of currency from HoT and today i found out that if i own a Ley Line Matter converter i can convert that currency to stuff i actually want.

Started to check out the wiki and stuff and i realize i need a guild for that, and also a pretty good one if i got this right.

So now i am looking for a guild to join that would be interested in helping me out and in return i can help out on other group related stuff.

I am on Piken Square (EU) if that matters but i can move if required, i have no ties to Piken atm.

If you use Firebrand’s trait which reduces the tome recharge you will have them on: 20, 30, 60s CD. If you further reduce it by 15% via Virtues trait line it’s: 17, 25, 50s. Tome of Justice seems pretty good on 17s CD.

I think the trait just reduces the cd on the skills and not the tomes.

The trait in virtues reduces the cd on tomes.

I might be incorrect though….

It didn’t deal any real damage, it didn’t have much range, and it didn’t do anything supportive.

Absolute nonsens! Why not try a standard burnbuild in wvw with trailblazers as a front guardian. With purging flames you could easily have >6 stacks of burning on 5 opponents. burning for >2k per second on each target.

The dps was only neglectable on full bunker stabrobots.

There was a couple of pretty decent power builds as well..

Falling prices isnt the same as a crashing economy.

Just as flipping the trader isnt bad for economics, flipping the trader is good for the customer since it increase instant sell prices and decreases posted selling prices.

So good that anet increase supply since there is a high demand.
