Romance Repetition

But I also know that the mainstream IS heterosexual. And having now TWO lesbian romances back to back in the stories as the closest thing to a spotlight romance does now raise my eyebrow: it feels like it’s a social agenda being pushed.

I don’t like social agendas in my entertainment. I just want to be entertained, not proselytized to.

This x a million. I wish they’d stop with the soapboxing. On top of the debacle that was Scarlet & the lore-ignoring living story & horrible GW1-marginalizing retcons to the lore, proselytizing to us is… jeez..

GW1 had much more thought in my opinion, the writing wasn’t sloppy and Twilight like.
What is the point of any MMO asking for opinions if the fanboys are just going to come in and pat Anet on the back and snarl at anyone who doesn’t have an opinion aligned with their own. The fact of the matter is they have gotten sloppy and most of us hope they will tighten up.

Curious as to whether you think the writing now is significantly worse.

You’re confusing writing with voice acting & cutscene implementation. & it’s not so much that the writing is worse, it’s the story & character ideas, dismissing of lore & the awful modernization of the dialog. At any rate Koss & Melonni had a more interesting romance than anything in GW2.

Yeah people will whine and complain even if you give them exactly what they ask for.

I keep hearing this. Who are the phantom people who complained about getting what they wanted? It just seems like you’re vilifying people to make a point.

I have never truly felt like a hero in the living story, that is until now. This updates quality is through the roof. slow claps

I do not think slow clap means what you think it means. or.. sarcasm? innanet is making it hard to tell!

Expansion inc? I hope so!

Not going to happen. They get more money with the Gemshop and “free” fanfic content with half or less the effort of making an Expansion.

yeah. I remember back when the game was in development Colin said they would like to make expansions/purchasable content blocks so that they had to earn their keep. (if the content was bad, people wouldn’t buy it) that got scrapped real quick.

Based on this past LS, I would rather they scrap the LS & go for 100% features. Races, Classes, gear, dungeons, non-combat systems, housing, mounts, more visual customization, zones. etc…

I honestly don’t undersatnd some of you lot.

You complained months before something int he lines of “if this doesn’t end up in Elder Dragon we’ll gather torches and pitch forks and kill Anet staff” – type of hate.

Now that you finally got your wish, you still complain? What did you expect? If this didn?t end up in a dragon awakening would you also kitten about it?

Somebody explain this to me please.

Can you show me a person who wanted an ED then was complaining about it ending in an ED? cuz I can’t.

dude there is one or two more updates. chill

Huh? why do people keep saying that? this was supposed to be the official END of LS season 1. The next part is the “gap” before features. (which I wish they just dropped the LS for.. guh)

I can’t really complain about the quality of it because at least ArenaNet had the guts to make something related to homosexuality a primary part of a story rather than some small section of the game with references.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Just because I’m a minority doesn’t mean they should make huge chunks of the game about my racial group. Besides the only reason people seem to like Kas/Marj is because it’s a homosexual relationship. In terms of appeasing that aspect they went way out of their way.. To the point that it feels forced & they sacrificed good character development.
I don’t know what would make you feel happy, but I don’t need them to tackle social issues, I just want a good fantasy story. They did it in GW1. They haven’t come close yet in GW2.

Well I guess it can’t be helped if people see it that way, since it was pretty easy to miss on a lot of conversations.

They actually DO have meaningful conversations in these last 2 patches, talking to each other as regular people, expressing interest for each others past, revelations of what it means to be with one another, how they wanna better themselves as people (actual quote) It’s not just sexual. I always stick around NPC-s to listen , and to me, there definitely is a progression in their relationship.

having a handful of conversations =/= relationship. And the conversions hardly explore emotional depth & are completely irrelevant to the story. it’s mostly mush. Whereas Koss & Melloni’s struggle literally informed what you did next & why & impacted them in different ways. Like I said, Koss & Melonni had a real romance complete with opposing story archs, struggle & actual exploration of some of the complexities of feelings. Ka&Ma is cute banter & token mushy exposition.

Mhenlo & Cynn were pretty funny. I loved how they presented the story just through idle animations of the henchies in the towns in EotN. & they didn’t shove it in your face. They had the proper place for them.

Say what you want, but people will always find something to complain

remember that applies to your complaints too.

I guess it’s one of those things where you have to be gay to understand, like myself.

Nah, there is a thread by a another gay gamer that recognized the poor quality of this “relationship”. If anything you should be appalled by the shoddy quality. What do you think of the Logan/Jenna relationship?

That wasn’t a romance. It was just sexual. There was almost no actual romantic interaction other then petnames & “I care about you baby” dialog. At least Koss & Melonni actually had sexual tension denial, dealing with pride, conflict & acceptance. Romance isn’t just two people who like to do it, it’s complex. all this “what a great love story”… I have no idea what it’s based on.

Well that was unexpected, only a matter of time before the haters get on, good job anet, good job indeed, kinda interested to see where this is going now, hopefully to an entirely new part of the game word.

Why do people have to blindly love this content? Why is it wrong for some people to recognize how bad the story is? Why can’t they point out why it’s bad in the hopes that it doesn’t happen again? I loved the story in GW1. GW2 (especially LS) has been a train wreck.
Have to agree with bokkieskitten. The “Kas & Jory story” was hardly even a story. It was a collection of flirting, shoehorned sexual innuendo, token “so much emotion” exposition & petnames.. There is nothing to actual relationship that merits praise. I don’t see why people are “blown away” by it.

DarksunG.9537

ArenaNet and the Guild Wars 2 team have gone a long way to provide strong story and dialog to hint at homosexual love in the game and that is all fine and dandy, I won’t hate on girl on girl love. However I cannot help but notice that there is a lack of heterosexual relationships in the game, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the only man and woman relationship in the story is Logan and Queen Jennah. This post is to gather support for a strong male NPC to come in the near future that could potentially become a love interest for an NPC of the opposite sex. Thank you for reading and thank you again if you agree.

P.S. by strong I don’t mean ugly as busted rocks, I mean clean, eloquent, well behaved and good looking. Someone that has the prestige of Thackeray, but more of a loner, not so eager to be the Queen’s lapdog if you know what I mean.

I’d hardly call Logan & Jenna a “relationship”. It’s more someone trying to impress someone else who doesn’t care.

I definitely agree the writers seem to have a disdain for females loving strong male characters. They seem to love to have females put down male characters, since they do it regularly. I don’t know, people seems to feel the same way here. kinda scary.

Seems like that’s a pretty rude, disrespectful, baseless and really extreme assumption, given they’ve not exactly had long and only have written a few “big” characters.

Eh.. I don’t know if thats “rude, disrespectful, baseless”. it’s writing, he’s telling you his review of the work. If that’s what he’s seeing, then maybe it’s there. You can’t just label it evil because you don’t like it. I personally don’t think any of the LS is very good. Especially the characters & dialog. I’d have to agree that either whoever is writing the characters is missing the mark or is actively tying to make a “point”. Id rather have cool stories then some kind of message.

I’m fascinated by the people suggesting “all the male NPCs in GW2 suck”. I’d love to hear about some male NPCs (not the PC) in games they thought didn’t suck.

Master of Whispers, General Morgan, Vekk, Master Togo(& don’t go on about his voice acting), Koss.

I thought Tybalt & Forgal were great. Forgal was what people here would call “Alpha Male” which I guess is a bad thing now that we should all hate. But they make sure that there are scenes where Almorra Soulkeeper puts him in his place so he doesn’t get too “male” which I suppose it also bad now. I don’t care, he was fun & I liked him. Tybal wasn’t strong or talented he was just super fun. It’s really just the LS. The characters aren’t fun, they aren’t cool, they act “hip”, the dialog is ridiculous. ugh.

I don’t really question your intentions now, it’s just that we probably would have more of a chance to launch a single charity right now for one single thing and then move on from there. and I also feel like that person would feel better if we prevented those children that he gives prosthetics to from needing them rather than give him money.

Because you go into a topic about a disabled person that people like and go “hey, don’t give money to that charity or a mini to that person, because we need it for the war veterans!”. That is rude to say the least. Want to organize a charity for the war veterans? Okay, go and create a topic about it.

And I’m still waiting for the topic link where an injured war veteran made a topic about how they car relate to a character and got different treatment.

Collaborative Development: Ranger Profession

DarksunG.9537

Specific Game Mode
PvE

Proposal Overview
I’m not super concerned with putting out specific abilities, i just want pets to be FUN & UNIQUE. right now they are dps augments. & that is absolutely dull.

Goal of Proposal
I find Rangers pets to be boring, unresponsive, little/no functionality, impersonal & nothing new or interesting. I love the idea of a class based on a real pet, but they need to be more customizable (visually), they need to work WITH my ranger, they need to be reliable (in terms of how they follow, act & react)& they need to be different than other games. They should stand out. They currently are a lesser version of wow pets.

Proposal Functionality

  • Pets should follow & stand right beside you. 3ft to your exact left/right. This makes their position reliable when you want to attack or avoid trouble, & you & your pet feel in-tune. This whole “they might, sorta be around this area & they stand 15ft away” needs to go away completely.
  • If I use an F ability it needs to happen instantly, interrupting their current action. Making them wait for the next attack cycle automatically makes them unreliable & frustrating. its not fun. Also, the attack AI is totally broken. Using a skill that has no enemy target (like the warhorn) should not put me or my pet into attack mode… ever. We also need the option to have pets only attack when I press “Pet Attack” not when I accidentally press a skill because I need to spam attacks to hit the 90 enemies around me.
  • They need to keep their names and be more visually customizable. Sorry but unless you make enough pets to have your choice be slightly unique like WoW (100s of pets), you have to have the ability to dye or put armor/gear on them to be unique. It would also be neat to have some kind of visual pet progression, where a pet gets “age” every time you gain AP. then have the pets visuals “mature” or “evolve” to show that this is the pet you spent the most time with. I know Anet wants us to like pets, but they’ve done precious little to make them feel like my unique pet.
  • We need way more pet abilities, & pet abilities need to work with the ranger (but not in a boring “my pet & I stack bleeds” or “my pet puts on a debuff to increase my deeps” kinda way).
It doesn’t even feel like Anet even wants us to use pets because nearly every skill is a trap, spirit, buff, sig etc.. Having my pet stack vuln so i can do more damage with my arrow is effective but man it’s boring. I want my pet to be able to do fun stuff with my like teleport in front of a moving mob & knock them back to me. Or throw on a debuff that last a few sec that allows my next crit to do kd. Or when I do a kd to have a “maul” move that makes them pounce on the guy and extend the the kd period. Something FUN. All this buff, passive, condi stack, dps, min/max stuff is effective but … talk about boring.
  • There needs to be more pet control & functionality. Maybe 1 more F skill that only works when I open up some kind of “pet combo”. Maybe every Ranger weapon has 1-2 skills on it that are an “opener” or a “finisher” that I can combo with the pet. Something unique rather than just combo fields, but something that relies on the 2 of us working together.

Associated Risks
Obviously you can make them too powerful, but Pets need to be more unique, have more skills, be more responsive & combo with my ranger to do FUN things.

Largos: one of the most boring, generic hey-look-another-Korean-elf-variation with cheesy cosplay “wings” attached. Man are they lame. Last thing we need is another human/elf clone with bits attached. Especially such silly looking bits. Can’t gasp someone wanting another winged-elf clone over an actually visually different race. The only problem I have is the idiotic size increase on the shoulders & the shrinking of the feet & ankles on the human male. Sorry, totally disagree. At least on the Norn. They added detail, gave the items proper mass, fixed clipping… Pretty much everything is better except the seam in the normals on the back of the shoulders.

Although I will agree, the massive SIZE of the shoulders on a human is idiotic now. And the narrowing of the ankles of the boots looks awful. Anet doesn’t get that the huge WoW shoulders & tiny feet don’t work in this game & they need to fix all the MASSIVE shoulders so be smaller & the tiny ballerina feet to be big.

…rather than this idiotic story about Scarlet. The story sucks & it permanently ruins what was once cool about the lore of GW. it is now permanently broken unless they retcon it. Which is ironic because that is how they started breaking it in the first place, but they don’t want to retcon things now that they have added a storyline that is worthy of retconning.

DarksunG.9537

Again with this Mary Sue term, it’s becoming more and more apparent that people obviously don’t understand what it means. Scarlet is NOT a Mary Sue by any means of the word. Look it up, it doesn’t mean what you think it means. A Mary Sue is a character which is infallible and a ‘do-gooder’ NOT a psychologically cracked, partial homicidal maniac.

I use Mary Sue & villain Sue together because the variation in the 2 is meaningless with regard to the failings of that character type. I don’t care that a Mary is a do-gooder & a villain is a do-badder. That’s not what makes up the horribly broken nature of the Sue. You can harp on semantics all you want, but when people are talking about Sues, it’s not because they are trying to pick nits on how they can attack someone’s labeling, it’s because they are trying to explain the spirit of such a broken character. As one of the definitions points out:
“Since there’s no consensus on a precise definition, the best way to describe the phenomenon is by example of the kind of character pretty much everyone could agree to be a Mary Sue.”

Yes, Scarlet “excells” in many fields but she had to LEARN them as expressed many times throughout the living story, a Mary Sue is naturally gifted with talents well beyond what her age would allow, and without any formal training. Also a Mary Sue is a character that is associated with horrifically written romantic undertones to normally a character well beyond her age.

So where is it said that these skills can’t be learned? never seen that. The point is that she’s over powered as wish fulfillment, not that was a particular method of gaining those skills. Saying “they can’t be learned” makes almost no character ever created a sue. I bet the Star Trek character the term is named after learned their skills. Albeit stupidly fast.
"She’s exceptionally talented in an implausibly wide variety of areas, and may possess skills that are rare or nonexistent in the canon setting. She also lacks any realistic, or at least story-relevant, character flaws — either that or her “flaws” are obviously meant to be endearing. "

And It’s so blatantly obvious that Scarlet’s “madness” is meant to be quirky, fun & sassy. Its probably her most ridiculous character feature.

And as for the lore being retconned or dismissed, I don’t really see anything that exemplifies that except for maybe the Krait. And even there it’s mentioned that she held something over them or tricked them to get them to agree to an alliance to begin with.

Are you kidding? Every alliance was built on the idea that she convinced them to join her & yet she has never once been shown to be even remotely well spoken, convincing or even realistic. There is so much lore bending to fit her she’s like a block hole. they could have explained everything she’s done as a manipulation of other groups skill & it would have been way more believable, but nope, it had to be her being awesome.

Also you’re making some rather large assumptions about Scarlet’s madness by comparing her to every other character that is manipulated in some way by a GOD from the realms of torment, considering you have no idea if that’s the case with her or not.

Ummm.. That’s the whole point. Unless they are going to retcon the gods even more & say they are nothing more than wizards (the only comparison they made with the gods & dragons was in the movement of the world & said that their power may rival that of the gods. which is kittened anyways) , then there’s pretty much no satisfying way to explain her acting so dumb. Insane & cartoon, sassy, wacky, sodomizer are not the same. & even if they come up with a mathematical 1+1=2 reason, she still stands out at wacky, dumb & totally unidentifiable as a person who is actually insane. Even worse, if they make it so that she did really see the eternal alchemy, ho man.. that would be the most epic Sue ever. Holy RP fanficness..
That’s why people are not looking forward to the end. Because the end will only explain WHY she is out-of-place, goofy & lore bending. After that happens, she will still be out-of-place, goofy & lore bending.

I have my problems with Scarlet as well but she’s not NEARLY as badly written as people have exaggerated. This isn’t saying there’s no bad writing with her, because there very clearly is.*

You’re entitled to your opinion as well, but I think she is as badly written at many people say. It would take Shakespeare to cobble together such disparate, conflicting & silly character pieces to make her work. & tbh, I don’t think the previously established GW universe supports such a wacky RP character. That may be why they’ve had to retcon, dismiss & alter so much established lore. To make way for something that doesn’t naturally fit.

Again, I disagree that the main problem is how she was presented but her actual character. “What Scarlet saw” was well written(the actual word crafting was really good), but ultimately made the character more unbelievable because it tried to made such a goofy, die-die-die, annoying, sodomize-lord-farren-jokes character have weight by going the way of the mary sue & making her “epic” at everything & “tragic” because she was “crazy”. it seems that a lot of people that like her, like her because she fits that RP wish-fulfilment for them. It’s a guilty pleasure but I don’t know it qualifies as high-art. & it stands out as such. It’s classic RP character mistake101. I fail to see how so many past characters that were influence by a GOD in the realms of Madness & Torment are less ridiculous in almost every way & yet Scarlet can still be viewed at “ok”.

But telling us we can’t have any opinion on what we’ve played over the past year is totally unfair. I’m not sure it even makes logical sense.

When did I ever say you can’t have an opinion? I’m just asking that people reserve judgment on the next release until they’ve played it and absorbed the story components.

But the post you responded to had nothing to do with what he thought about the next release. It was about “The problem with the Scarlet Story is that Anet thinks they’ve made this grand mystery that’s gotten the players talking.” That post had zero to do about the next release but was about how everything up to it hasn’t worked. It’s a valid point because it showed the posters current experiences & how so far all the “tie-ins” have been unsatisfying.

I’ve enjoyed the LS so far. There’s room for me to theory craft on what made Scarlet evil, who the new enemy might be, etc. Sure it would have been better to explain how she made all these alliances possible, but I understand that there’s only so much story space for the writers to use. Too much story would dilute everything, since you sometimes create more questions than answers.

Just realize that most complaints so far are like reading a book only 3/4 of the way through, and assuming how the climax comes in the final few pages. I’m still holding onto hope that Scarlet becomes our ally, and is a permanent NPC going forward. I won’t know until a few months from now.

Some people like JarJar & think he’s great, but many people have great reasons why he’s not. As far as i’ve seen, the player reasons for seeing her as broken make way more sense then her being a good character. Yes, we don’t need to know everything about a story, but for Scarlet it’s just an excuse because she fails to hard. Not knowing exactly how Shiro could generate the Jade Wind was ok, because of the restraint they showed on his abilities, his flavor & style fitting into the world & the intrigue of why he did what he did. for Scarlet’s this splatter of inconsistent & annoying personality, abilities, out of place design, lore bending, stupid dialog & cheap joker ripoffs on a scale that make the whole thing implausible & so far, unnecessary.

As for 3/4 of the way through? really? 95% has been silly, the last 5% is gonna fix that? No.. that’s not reality. If that’s true then I can’t see a valid reason to criticize any story telling at all. Everything is acceptable, there are no standards.

Mr Stein, we understand the story is personal to you & your staff because you worked on it. We get that. But telling us we can’t have any opinion on what we’ve played over the past year is totally unfair. I’m not sure it even makes logical sense.

That is the main issue: the CHARACTER is annoying. The back story & “mystery” doesn’t work when the end result is this annoying, out-of-place, mary-sue character. Shiro was manipulated by a greater power. The vizir was manipulated by a greater power.Varesh was mad & manipulated by a greater power. None of them were out-of-place mary sues. Even when Shiro displayed the power of the Jade wind it felt like it was a piece of a bigger puzzle & felt like it fit into the fantasy world.

knowing why a character was this annoying, out-of-place & mary-sue, doesn’t make them NOT annoying, out-of-place and mary-sue

I don’t understand why this is not considered a valid criticism. I can’t think of 1 literary, game or film character that is annoying, overpowered, unbelievable & feels out of place to the established universe for 95% of the story & then is suddenly redeemed by the last 5%. It doesn’t happen. Can you you give me an example where this has ever worked? Isn’t it possible she’s just not a well made character?

There are however quite a bit of movies and series that does not make sense until the end.

So basically your loss if you decided to hate it before that point.

Any story that “does not make sense until the end.” is usually so riveting & engaging that everyone is looking forward to the explanation. It’s the point of a mystery. LOST is an example were the end didn’t even matter that much since everything before it was so great. Memento is an example where it doesn’t make sense till then end, totally engrossing. To say that the Scarlet arc is following that formula is disingenuous at best.

I would really like to know (since we really haven’t heard about this since before beta):

What is Anet’s stance on PVE control.

Right now, you cannot create a PvE character that is a really meaningful controller the way you can make a DPS character. Little bits of 2 sec root here, some slowdown there. the occasional .5 sec stun. Useless on bosses. It’s all extremely piecemeal & extremely boring. I really don’t care about PvP & feel the entire game is balanced based on it.
I’ve been playing a Control Wizard on Neverwinter Online & it’s super fun & effective. Will we ever really have a true control build in GW2? right now It’s pretty much non-existant & when it is effective it’s tiny, incremental, not very fun, hitches you put into mob movement & occasional interrupt.

@ KorKor… have you seen this update? Maybe he has taken how players feel into consideration, and you will be immensely pleased when you finally partake. Cool it, and don’t denounce it until you’ve seen it for yourself.

After a year of “don’t denounce it until you’ve seen it” & every release being exactly what we feared or worse in terms of story this just doesn’t hold water anymore. I think the most logical way to look at the upcoming LS is:
“Everything we’ve seen so far is fail & I’m waiting for the end to be more fail, while it would be nice to have something ok.”
I love all the features & the Marionette fight is awesome, but he story & characters? fuhhhh.

Hence, players looked in the direction of the villain instead, and found it a frustrating experience at best. Unlike the NPC characters, the player character has never been personally harmed by Scarlet, and thus has no motivation to go after her and find things out about her other than what the content is pointing them to. There also is a lack of player agency in this, since players have proven to be more driven to find these connecting threads than the dev team orginally estimated.

Ehh.. while I agree with your assessment of how novels are written & some of the faux pas of the LS, I totally disagree this really has much to do with how annoying & dumb Scarlet is. I mean it barely enters into what the dialog, tone, attitude & abilities of the character are.. all of which are awful. General Morgan has even less focus & reveal in NF then Scarlet has in the LS & yet he is lightyears beyond Scarlet as an interesting & believable character. No, I don’t buy that the problems with Scarlet have anything to do with the LS format & how exactly the player plays into the story. that really mostly effects what you think of your own character.

She is very much, or very similar to, the brain child of a first time role player who wants to make a character that can do everything ever, in a desperate attempt to make that character interesting, and in doing so, had instead made a mary-sue character that is not interesting at all, but in fact a poorly made, two dimensional character with no depth to them.

This is exactly how I felt about the character before I even knew what a Mary Sue was.

You’ll have to wait and see how we integrated story into the release. I think it works pretty well but I’m biased. I am looking forward to the feedback we receive next week.

you also thought scarlet was a good villain.

I also know the entire plot a year in advance.

I don’t understand why knowing why a character is annoying makes them not annoying. I feel like Anet thinks we’re just not sophisticated enough when we get the “wait till the end” excuse. Like we “just don’t get it”.

Han Solo is a fantastic character that has ZERO BACKGROUND & simple motivations. Having detailed background lore doesn’t make a character good. & I’m certainly not enamored by the mystery because I know the culmination of all the “hidden” story is this giddy phoney cartoon villain that sodomizes lord Farren but is hyper intelligent. I honestly don’t care why she can get into the mysts because having such a dumb character(not backstory) there just taints the whole thing.

I can’t think of 1 character in literature of film that is annoying, overpowered, out-of-place & lore-bending, but is totally redeemed by 2% of their story. It just doesn’t happen. So far every bit of background we’ve gotten from her hasn’t change how annoying of a character she is. & to be honest the more we know the less reason I see for her to:

1) Act so stupid & cliche. Her dumb dialog & cheesy threats are completely unnecessary I feel like someone was trying to be cute & “zany” but failing miserably. She’s not threatening or cool. she’s freaking annoying.

2) Be so proficient at everything. She could have easily been a woman who knows how to convince certain people to do certain things. I would have rather seen a story of her slowly building political influence to woo factions into doing things for her. There was no need to make her master & commander of all physics. It feel like the only reason this was done was to make some kind of weird point or some kind of personal gratification. It certainly doesn’t make her believable & it marginalizes past villains.
Even Abbadon A GOD(which have all been emasculated into marginal demi-gods that are weaker than dragons) used subtle mind-games & manipulation to make Shiro do what he needed to. That showed restraint, sophistication & class. With Scarlet is like blunt-force trauma of “SHE IS AWESOME! BELIEVE IT!”

I don’t think “knowing the end” is gonna fix all these massive problems.

Well, I never made the comparison between Tolkien and GW2 in the first place.

“If you can suspend your disbelive so much that you accept ogres, giants, dragons etc, I don’t see why you can’t accept a villain whose actually really clever and really powerful.”
& you said that right after you made an obviously tailored explanation of Sauron trying to point out fantastical he is. That is a comparison.

As for “a villain whose actually really clever and really powerful” oh come on… Nothing in Scarlet’s personality says clever or powerful. We have to be told she’s “clever” & powerful. Now, Veresh Ossa? Yes I could believe she’s a brilliant tactician & a powerful authoritative leader because her personality is consistent with her abilities. Not because there is a paragraph somewhere giving me an excuse as to why she’s awesome. TBH, Varesh had a far more believable madness too. Not a stupid hipster dufus. You can’t just throw any personality on any type of character & say “it makes sense because excuse!” It has to be in terms of of variations on what we can identify with. Very very very rarely do you have someone who is hyper hyper intelligent & super wacky stupid crazy jokey dance dance at the same time. It’s STUPID. It almost never works. That’s what character’s like the Joker are small-time. Because Insanity almost necessarily counters logic. When people talk about people being so smart they are crazy they don’t dance around giggling like a cheese-ball & kitten men in cauldrons. For Scarlet they did the RP noob mistake: Cram totally bonkers (because it’s hip & “fun”) with Super Smart (Because I want my character to awesome & powerful!). They had no concept of believable limitations.
To say “I don’t see why you can’t accept a villain whose actually really clever and really powerful.” misses the point entirely.

but I never intended to say that Scarlet can’t be broken. I know she can be broken and I know that she can break lore.

In terms of lore yeah you did: “And even if Scarlet DID break lore, I don’t really see the problem.”
This is where I felt you threw out all measures & standards. The absolute base level thing you need to do in things like MMO lore is be consistent. Breaking lore is the equivalent of saying “what is happening right now doesn’t matter, because in 1 year, it might not have happened” When you can say xyz never happened or wyz was “really” something else, the viewer can no longer rely on anything in the story being consistent & therefore cannot create a cohesive narrative. Retconning can occasionally work, but it’s very very rare. Abbadon? worked. Has problems, but for the most part it worked. The Gods history being “human biased” & totally changed? total bogus (& tbh, inaccurate since not everything in the GW1 manual was written from a human point of view. some of it was out-of-game descriptions that they threw out). All it did was make much of the things that people liked about GW1 nonexistent. So no, breaking lore is not “ok”. Every time it’s done, the universe you created becomes less & less believable.
As for lore bending. that doesn’t work either. & it especially doesn’t work when everything is bending toward one point. You’re essentially saying “we are forcing everything we established to conform to this 1 character because this character doesn’t naturally fit in this universe.” it’s like a red flag that you’re made a junk character.

People are passing judgements on the character, without having heared the full story, because for some reason, everyone is expecting ArenaNet to screw things up.

This isn’t a valid criticism of storytelling. If a story sucks till the last 5 minutes then the last 5 minutes explains in microscopic detail WHY it sucked then that doesn’t make for a good story. Personally, I don’t care what Scarlet’s motivations are. Her personality & unnecessary over-powered nature are so stupid that I spend every minute she’s on screen groaning. It’s obvious she probably being “controlled” by an ED or something like that. So what? that doesn’t make “tee hee fancy panties” literary gold. It doesn’t make her alliances pointlessly improbable. People can absolutely pass judgement on what they’ve experienced. If the mystery were good, I’d be glued to my seat like when I was watching LOST. & while the ending of LOST sucked, the show was just so kitten good that i’ve watched it twice.

Saying “you can’t judge anything until you see the end” is just bogus. It’s not true & it won’t make currently bad characters & dialog good just to know why they act like morons.

I’m glad you mention Tolkien with his evil overlord, who’s almost indefeatable, except for the fact that he wears his one ring of power over, instead of under his armor. And the giant, quasi-omniscient eye that this evil overlord later becomes, which has the capability to command giant orc-armies, yet for some reason leaves the only path to its destruction, that is the way up to Mount Doom, where the one ring was forged, completely ungarded.

Yes, I am in fact familiar with the concept of suspension of disbelieve. That’s why I mentioned all those things. If you can suspend your disbelive so much that you accept ogres, giants, dragons etc, I don’t see why you can’t accept a villain whose actually really clever and really powerful.

That you’re even bothering to argue that Guild Wars 2’s Scarlet Briar is as well-developed as Lord of the Rings’ Sauron shows a lack of literary sophistication on your part. Please don’t take that as an insult; some people like Saving Private Ryan and Mozart, some people like Transformers and Justin Bieber.

There’s nothing wrong with liking Transformers and Justin Bieber. But you lose us when you start trying to convince us Transformers is just as well-written and directed as Saving Private Ryan or that Justin Bieber has just as much musical talent as Mozart did.

Nice try. I almost fell for your trap there, but I’m not going to get down to that level. Please just re-read what I have written, especially what I did and didn’t claim in my post and correct your post accordingly. Maybe after you’ve learned to do that, we can discuss my literary sophistication.

Nah, he explained the flaw of your comparison perfectly.
Pretty much all of your reasoning shows any ability to distinguish between what makes something work better & what makes it broken. I myself can admit that I like the movie The Story of Ricky. But to say that it is of the same caliber or shows the same grasp of story telling, character development, setting & consistency as say, Blade Runner, is just being dishonest.
Story of Ricky is a crap movie, but I like it. Same can be said of Scarlet for some people. But trying to rationalize Scarlet because “you can accept apples, why not oranges?” doesn’t work. None of you points allows for any distinction between anything. Essentially you’re saying we should accept Scarlet because she can’t be broken.

Riiight…. That makes so much more sense than Scarlet traversing the Mists for whatever it is she’s lookinging for so she can turn the world inside out and change fate.

Ughh.. Again people using rationalization to say something is good. It doesn’t matter if there is a “reason” for them to do something. They could make a perfectly logical reason to have 800ft giant robots from Gundam come into GW2, why not? They said the mists connect to every time & every reality. Because it would still be stupid. Doesn’t matter if they can rationalize it. The fact that they over-use the mists so much already makes so much of past lore marginalized (not to mention the obvious twisting of the exclusivity of the mists & how ridiculous it is that we can just go in & out at will & how many problems that creates with.. well.. everything). TBH some stories that don’t have explanations are even better because the writer understands when & where to limit things. With Scarlet it’s more like an RP player that just wants their character to be the smartest, funnest, sassiest, strongest, bestest, tragicest, hip-crazy person EvAr! The more power they give her, the more idiotic she becomes. She would have made a decent side-kick to a zone villain. but this is just self-gratification.

I think the problem with LS lies with the primary thing it was intended to do: replace expansions. I would have no problem with the LS if it lived up to that goal.

1 year of LS needs to provide the same volume & type of content we got from a year of GW1
IT’S NOT EVEN CLOSE

That’s my problem with it. All the hype about “an expansions worth of content” is totally bogus. It’s not even a 1/3 an expansion & it’s been 1 1/2 years. This “feature patch” coming later this year will be nothing more than what we would have normally gotten from Jan-Mar from LS features.

We’ve been hearing about “We have a couple of really big Guild Wars projects cooking in the background” for almost a year. They told us they were doing Dungeon revamps a year ago. we got 1 path & minor tweaks. I don’t know how long they expect people to stick around when they say that. They haven’t even figured out how they are gonna release it. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not happening.

I’d rather they focused on making new races, massive sets of gear & redo the dungeons & world bosses, then on this not-good story.

Where is the patch preview?

Oh, I have never claimed that EotN was a bad expansion, I am simply stating that the amount of stuff added wasn’t much more than we have seen with the Living Story model, but still took longer time.

Look, if you’re going to just strait up lie then how can you expect to have any kind of conversation.

LS =/= EotN.
LS =/= 0.5 of EotN.

It’s like saying if I give you 1 penny everyday it’s more over a year then giving you 10 dollars a year. It’s just factually untrue. comparing them is laughable.

Also what difference does “expansion” & “stand alone game” make when they took the same amount of time to make, are for the same game & cost almost the same amount? It’s a pointless distinction. If people saying “I want an expansion/stand alone add-on” makes everything magically make more sense, then there you go.

Darksun, I understand what your saying but there are different Elements to making encounters hard.

I belive the Organization is the element which makes encounters Hard and Good. Having them just be difficult isnt fun as your point proves, but when the difficulty is because of a lack of organization, this is what makes it good.

Meh. I don’t think that’s necessarily true either. You could play content that you & your buddies are doing great at because you have high skill.. then whoops, I come in & eff it all up for you cuz I suck.

At any rate, my whole point is Hard =/= Good. That’s like saying Red =/= Good. It doesn’t make sense. Yes, when something is challenging it can be rewarding or be a part of the fun but something can also be hard & annoying, cheap, boring & lame. Hard doesn’t equal anything.

So guys, Colin said that one out of every bajillion people guessed the general way this whole deal ends, but he also said everyone else was mostly deriding them. So that means it has to be one of those ideas that people see as unlikely..

TBH all this says to me is that the explanation is so outlandish, lore incongruent & ridiculous that most people see that possibility it as a deus ex & totally contrary to what we’ve been told. While there is a chance it’s really cleaver the last time something like that happened was Abbadon & how they hooked him into everything.
Unfortunately, with all the retcons & “evolution” they’ve had with the previous stories, we now know that anything that happened or was said to have happened in GW is completely up for grabs, with little care as to how well it fits with the rest of the story or even if it’s good. It’s just a matter of “does it fit the real world personal preferences of the particular writer”.
I was so excited back when it was thought that the Queens Jubilee would actually tie in to the Asura Infinity Ball story. It made sense, had lead up, was consistent… then: Scarlet..

Really wondering why you think the concern on “sexy pixel lesbians” is actually a real thing and not something whipped up and flogged over and over trying to make an outrage out of it.

When you have a player that is gay saying:
“I loved that an LGBT relationship was such an important part of the main story in GW2, but by adding another lesbian relationship to the “biconics” as well as the “iconics” I’m starting to think Anet is just doing it because girl on girl is hot. The only other relationship we have really seen in a major part of the game is Logan and Queen Jenna, and even then they don’t have 10% of the flirting that the 2 lesbian pairings do. Am I alone in thinking like this?”
I think there is some credence to it. It seemed very much like that to me & others too. The Caith Faolain things was just there. Didn’t stand out, worked with the plot. But this is like “tee hee! lesbian smexy!” It stands out even more when, like Mortifact said, The only major strait relationship is so passionless & one sided you wonder why they choose to do what.
tbh it also seems weird that Marjory would act in that way. that first bit you get of her is the noir feel which is more controlled & sly. Then it’s pet names, jokey, silly alliance puns & nooooo. It just kind of degenerates her character into an RP persona. I’m so sick of the sassy jokey talk in pretty much most of the characters now. It’s all “witty” one-liners & “fun” dialog. maybe all people want is crap about “fancy panties” but I think people who went through Nightfall & watch General Morgan see his life & loyalties fold in on themselves remember better characters & stories.

It’s been confirmed that it is a “love story” so you’re reading it wrong.

There is no right answer, unless we get the writer that wrote it in here to confirm either way. I could easily say you are reading too far into it because its been confirmed a love story. Just because we now know there is a romantic destination between the two, doesn’t mean all their dialogue has subtext and innuendo now. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Heck, we don’t even know if they are actually together yet.

While I see Marjory trying to defuse a possible argument, you see her liking the idea of Kasmeer naked. It’s a matter of perspective.

Pretty sure the writer said that it’s a love story & it’s flirting.

Dark you’re stepping into very dangerous territory. To a lot of people being gay or being a woman is just part of everyday life. The only reason it stands out to you, is presumably because you’re a straight male. What you see as things that are being included when they don’t need to be, is actually just a game finally starting to better represent what society is actually like.

Or would you rather that everyone played a male character and that women NPC’s were silent and everyone was repressed?

omg.. enough.. It doesn’t even matter what I say, it just goes over your head & you label me a homophobe so you can be the hero. It doesn’t matter how logical I am or how much sense I make… Forget any logic, jump to conclusions, strawman, go for it.. Whatever makes you look right.

You read that as Marjory liking that Kasmeer was naked? When I first seen that, I saw it as Marjory wanting to drop the subject, because Kasmeer was asking that question in a semi-challenging tone. If Marjory would have said, “Yes, I do have a problem with that.”, she would have been questioning Kasmeer decision on the matter. Which could have possible led to an argument. So, Marjory took the disbelieving diplomatic approach, and she simply answered with a “nooo”.

It’s been confirmed that it is a “love story” so you’re reading it wrong.
