They had other villains, other obstacles, and that made the heroes all the better.

Yeah maybe it is a bit contrived to see that Scarlet is behind everything but there are actually many evil organisations in Tyria.

The player just destroyed or weakened all of them already.

I mean in order of appereance: Ghosts of Ascalon are severely weakened for a while, the most powerful political oppenent of Queen Jenna was captured (Caudecus), the Nightmare Court’s Headquarter was destroyed and its leader forced into hiding, the most powerful Dredge Colony was defeated, the Flame Legion lost its leader, the Inquest was weakened by killing their leader and destroying their biggest Lab and then we killed Zhaitan.

There really wasn’t anything left after the Personel Story.
It’s more like Scarlet is now creating an Anti-Pact of the remnants of these organisations.

Yeah we all know that Scarlet ist super smart, extremly resourcefull and seems to pretty much be able to do anything she wants.
I just think she needs it.

If you think about it, she is suppose to be the personal nemesis of the player. And from a lore-perspective the player is pretty much a Mary Sue him/herself. I mean s/he is just a random guy who is VERY good at killing stuff and pretty much rallys all of Tyria behind him/her to kill the dragon, thus achieving more than even Desteny’s Edge could imagine. Also Trehearne would be nothing without him/her.

So the only worthy opponent for a person like that it someone like Scarlet.
Similar to Superman’s and Lex Luther’s relationship. Both are extremly powerful, but in their own way.

It kinda makes sense i think.

Yeah true but it has a lot of sci-fi elements don’t you think? (Asura)

True, but the Asura stuff is mainly magic based.

It’s an interesting debate if what we call ‘science’ can be described as just magic natural to our world and understanding.

Exactly, there is virtually no difference between very advanced technology and magic.
I mean Asura use Magic pretty much like we use Electricity. A resource, you use it through technology but can’t interact with it directly (We can’t do a Force Lightting รก la Star Wars and not all Asura are magic users).

Yeah, that’s what I call anti-derailing

It is a fantasy MMO.

Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy after all.

I like how this thread is derailed into a wreck already, and this is only the first page.

Welcome to the sarcasm section of the forums.

I was pretty much expecting that, kinda interesting actually. It’s like people desperatly need to say something antagonistic here.

See title.

Thats what i am asking myself abot this game sometimes.
For example, I mean things like the main theme of the Living Story is Technology (the stuff Scarlet takes/steals all the time) which usually is sci-fi and a big part of the Personel Story is to get people together to face evil (the Pact) which is more from a j-rpg.

Are Scarlet's actions really so random?

in Living World

It all makes total sense, so why do people think otherwise?

So invading random zones and then just leaving when time runs out is a coordinated effort to…?

Test her new Toys? (the clockwork monsters, she is crazy after all)

Interesting point. You are trying to understand her motivations by looking at her actions and that is an important thing to do. Because right now, we have not been given any solid explanation about her goals or motivations (beyond I’m crazy and want to blow up stuff)

I think one of the issues people have is that Scarlet’s motivations as a villain are either overly simplistic (blow up stuff) or they are being kept hidden when they should be revealed and explained to players.

Good motivation is critical for villain and just as critical is being sure the audience understands those motivation. The best villain motivations are those that the audience can grasp and even empathize.

I think one of the issues people have is that Scarlet’s motivations as a villain are either overly simplistic (blow up stuff) or they are being kept hidden when they should be revealed and explained to players.

ArenaNet likes being mysterious and dropping hints that everything will be explained but there are some things that need to come out at the start.

If Scarlet has deeper motivations, they need to be explained. If not, well I suppose the people who hate Scarlet do have a legitimate point.

For myself, after the flat, cardboard Elder Dragons I’m just glad for a villain with anything remotely recognizable as motivation, even it is just a Harley Quinn craziness.

True, if a-net keeps us in the dark for too long, it isnt good.
Still, i just wanted to comment on the fact that many people think that her actions are random, which they arent mostly. Thus a-net actually does give us some hints about her and her plans.

I mean with this knowledge you could actually predict what she will do next. What kind of unique technology (magical oder non-magical) is left for her to steal?
And if there isnt, it is possible that this could be the time for the final fight against her.

(Also i think it would be an awesome dungeon where she throws EVERYTHING at you from the preceding living story chapters one after an other and finishes with somekind of ultimate creation of hers.)

There are probably some legitimate complains someone can say about Scarlet but there is one thing I really cant understand.
Why do people think that her actions are disconnected and random?
I mean we dont why she does it but we definitly know WHAT she does.

The way I see it the whole Scarlet story arc is about one thing: Technology.
She helps to develop new technology oder outright steals it, to use it for herself.
Dredge, Flame-Legion, Holoprojections from Dragon Bash, Inquest, Aetherblade, Nightmare-Court und now Krait.

Do you feel powerful?

As a level 80 ranger I would say, no. I feel like if I play smart I can survive in Orr but certainly not powerful.

Interesting, yes it probably depends on the class.
Every class has an other mix of offense and defense, so some are better at specific parts of the game.
Necros and Guardiens have it easier in open world pve as they can pretty much slaughter through enemies (even in Orr). But i may be biased because my main is a necro.

Maybe it’s an odd question but does the game make you feel powerful?

For me this is actually the first mmo that really show you, yes you are a walking death machine. I mean it makes sense, from a in-universe perspective the player is someone who can kill dozens of normal people with no problem.
Though some people will probabaly say otherwise.

What do you think?

As much as i like the fractals ( the colossus being my second favourite one) this one was always very odd to me. I always get the feeling it was all joke by a-net.
Like: “Lets just put Dr Manhattan in our game and see how people try to make sense of THAT.”
