It’s unlikely. They are separate systems, with some things (like VIP status) specific to China. They also have separate trading posts. So as I understand it, you would need a Chinese account to play the Chinese servers, and EU/NA to play those.

I know you can transfer your account between NA and EU when necessary, but I don’t think you can add China to that mix — probably there are huge economic in-game disasters waiting to happen if that were allowed.

It could be that more Luminescent armor upgrades will require more activity in the zone, though it’ll be nice if it feels as fresh for each piece as it does for the shoulders. That could extend the longevity quite a bit.

I don’t think Dry Top is drying up either, I went in to spend a fossilized insect and found myself helping a push to T4 with a couple of well organized commanders.

I don’t think you have to do any previous chapters to get the stuff in the current one, unless you want to experience the story in order. I’ve not maxed out the achieves on any of them and I’m still eligible.

That being said, I’ve been helping guildies get through the older stuff and I am in an RP guild on TC that does not require 100% rep. Not that I’d demand you be in my guild to join some LS runs. This evening (East Coast) we’ll be picking up with the end of Chapter 3 before going on to 4 and then if we still have time, 5.

If you want to take your time with all the dialogue and lore, I might not be quiiiiite in the mood to do that for the third time in a few days, but if you want to go through at a solid pace, well, I’m about to go have lunch and then I can log in and help you catch up.

how to get to the ley line hub

in Living World

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Go to the Prosperity Waypoint. Go to the closest fire crystal crossing and zip across the quicksand. Look to your left (the well is just ahead to your right). There is a door. Go through that door and into the tunnel at the back. Down below in the tunnel there is a T intersection, go in there and up the curving ramp/rocky cliff thing. You will emerge in the next section of Dry Top.

Proceed through the Oasis to the far end and up the hill to the left to a pair of vine bridges. Take the left hand bridge (jump along it rather than running, or you may slide off to your death). You’ll be at another waypoint, which for future reference is the closest to the ley line hub.

Go past that waypoint into a desert area. Go along the right hand wall until you descend into a ravine. At the end of that, you’ll be in the hub, and off to your right up a hill will be the LS stuff.

There will be a lot of mobs and possible sandstorm things along the way, but that’s the route.

If for some reason that door to your left won’t let you through, you may need to do a previous episode to open it, but I think that is not the case. If the door is closed, try just walking through it.

I’m skeptical about the Rift for my use. I am quite nearsighted and haven’t worn contacts for years, so I have rather thick glasses. Hooray for technology, they aren’t bottle-thick, but they do stick out on each side of the lens frame. Peripheral vision is somewhat limited for me as a result.

Also, I can’t even deal with the most “comfortable” headsets. They pinch my ears over my glasses earpieces and in a few minutes I am in great pain. Earbuds are hideous for me as well, I loathe jamming anything in my ears.

So while millions of people can get along with these things just fine, I have to hope that no MMO I want to play ever goes fully into must-have-headset design.

You do have to do the story once through on each alt before that alt can do the achieves (some odd-man-out things in the Leyline Hub notwithstanding). Whoever triggers the story instance gets control of the dialogue options and item interactions as well. I heard a guildie saying she couldn’t read the flavor books in the Priory Library, for instance.

But as long as you click the “Progress” button at the end, you can get credit for an instance someone else started so long as you are sharing that story step. Make sure to ask your friend not to close the instance before you’ve progressed and gotten your rewards.

I can say all this with confidence as I’ve been taking an alt through Entanglement and the next chapter just today, helping a guildie who hasn’t done any of the LS, and it’s worked as described.

Facet of Light bugged?

The buff you get has a timer on it, 15 seconds I believe. Keep your mouse on it and when you hit 2-3 seconds run out. Or use ranged and stay near the border so you can dodge out. You shouldn’t have a problem staying alive. You should have enough time even if he stuns you once.

You don’t even need to mouse over it. When you have a couple of seconds left it starts flashing on your boons icons. I did it on my thief, and at the flash I had time for one or two more attacks before I double dodged out of the circle.

Question for those suggesting group effort: can more than one person get the red buff at once if they all kill the minion together? Or do you have to take turns?

Malevolent Memory Guide

in Players Helping Players

1 – kill minion, this gives you the color buff
2 – while still with that buff, run through a fragile ovoid (NOT one that is in aoe — apparently you can get them spawning more spread out if you kite the minion a bit as you kill it)
3 – now with both color and fragile, hug the vortex crystal. Be careful getting to it, anything that hits you on the way will down you instantly and you lose the buffs, though Marjory does rez you. You want to be right on top of it to make sure it gets fragiled.
4 – melee the vortex crystal. It should explode in a hit or two, and it does significant boss damage when it does.
5 – get the heck away, the time you spent on that let the boss come at you!

Sometimes you will not find a usable fragile before you lose your color, which only means you have to kill another minion to restart the buffing.

Vortex Crystal in Glint's Lair

in Living World

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I thought the whole thing did a great job of teaching the pieces of the fight and then stitching them together at the end. This despite my being a fairly clueless sort at figuring these things out.

My first run through I got stymied a time or two. I got Fragile and then avoided all the floor crystal shatters and of course didn’t have Fragile by the time I got to the invulnerable crystal. I read the crystal’s description, said "Oh, THAT is what that ‘Fragile’ is for, ran back, got Fragile, and just booked to the thing — discovering along the way that the floor crystals look hazardous but aren’t, at all.

Then the crystal attunement boss was a pain, my health was ticking away and I kept bouncing off the color pylons. But when I had a moment to read the summoned fragment description I went OOHHHHH and then got through it, just kiting the summons until their buff went away then pouncing them.

After that all went pretty smoothly except for the time pressure of “A new build will be available in X minutes,” and my earlier stumbling blocks cost me badly as I got kicked out just one void crystal from beating the boss. At which point I had to go do errands for a while, and came back and yeah, I was back out in the Priory and had to start from the very beginning. Though I did it all much faster the second run through.

The thing is I had so much fun figuring it out on my own, albeit with plenty of game guidance, that I have no complaints anything like those in this thread. And having done it on my super squishy not great DPS thief, I have a feeling it’s going to be a breeze on my actual combat alts. (Though stealth was a fantastic way to wait out the buff on the summoned shards).

Huh I got through it with my ranger. It was challenging to be sure but all I did was talk to Canach, then go through and set each bomb/corpse thing, then agro the wolves and drag them into the bombs each time. When I got to Caithe, I hoped up on the rocks out of mob reach and sniped everything dead with my longbow. Caithe and I rezzed all the dead party members.
Made my way up to the lookout, which was the easiest part. Then comes the final attack during which I was downed 3 times but managed to rally off almost dead mobs each time. Then some darth vader head helicopter eventually showed up and saved my rear.
I don’t really have any secrets other than don’t let those mobs hit you much, they hit hard.

The problem under discussion isn’t completing the step, it’s doing the achieve where the NPC’s all stay alive.

I am concerned, as this achieve has to be done to do the meta and get a piece for the Luminescent shoulder. Hopefully it will be figured out soonish in the grand scheme of things.

I concur, that is one of the most breathtaking spaces in the game. At least with the current LS structure, you can activate the chapter in order to go in there any time you like no matter what happens in the future.

One thing though for RPers to note: a couple of my guildies were doing the run first time through and only the one who started the instance could interact with the various random books. Not just the LS green star ones, any of them. The “guest” could see them, but not open up their texts. I didn’t hear if she could interact with the artifacts.

I like the Light (female and male) best of the three weights, so that’s what I collected shoulder wise today even though I was on my Thief. Nor have I liked strange protrusions on gloves. Entirely personal aesthetic sense, there.

Anyway, I think all three sets have at least some parts that are lovely and I am looking forward to gathering them all.

Hooded capes are what i’d love in GW2.
A long hooded, overcoat even if it comes as an outfit (overlapping armor). I would only need that on my char, i swear i will not even have him wear any underwear!
I’m serious …about the no underwear part :P

Oh, if they do hoods, they just have to do the thing that DaoC did! I remember it well. We had capes, albeit ones that were stiff rectangles down our backs. They hinged in one point when we sat. You could get a cape with a hood up, or one without a hood. And then in a patch, they introduced a toggle for hoods. So you could hotkey flip your hood onto your head or down in a bit of a rumple behind you. The players were astounded and overjoyed, this little touch was adored beyond all measure.

GW2 can outdo DaoC, I’m sure. Hood up or down, cloak closed around you or flowing freely, folded back over your shoulders. Please please proper cloak physics.

I can't play with keybinds

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I was a clicker when I started MMOing. I just added a key or two over time that let me fire off things faster. It helps that I’m a touch typist.

However, I do get set in my ways as to what keys do what. So I think I still to this day remap some keys to match my DaoC setup (that being my first MMO). I settled on a key map in WoW that I try to replicate in GW2 and TESO so I can always find my friends list, my inventory, my skill list, my quest log (that latter not a concern in GW2), and so on.

I do find it helpful to use a Naga HEX mouse, that gives just enough keys to put all my movement on my right hand on the mouse and I only need to hit one key at a time on the keyboard. I never remap my 1-0 keys, but – and = become autorun and walk/run toggle.

It’s whatever makes sense to you. If you are always messing up on a particular key, you might want to pick another key to fire that skill. I know that having put Dodge on N, in the heat of a fight I find my map coming up far too often …

You can also mentally assign a letter to a desired action. In WoW I had “Assist” on A and “Follow” on F, but my mind would just say “A” when I wanted to acquire someone’s target. On spells, hmm — well, for instance on guardian greatsword 3 is a leap at foe to blind them skill. So instead of thinking of the leap skill name, or having to look for and hit the icon, my mind rapidly goes “I’m too far from that enemy, I want to get closer, THREE!” I don’t actually know the names of many skills off the top of my head.

All tricks learned over time. You will learn your own tricks. Mostly you need to at first deliberately use keys rather than mouse clicks, until it becomes an instinct.

I think it could be a lot of fun. Pink Day had that very thing, in fact, with a race made of riddle clues to locations. You had to figure out the riddle, go to the location, do the indicated action to prove you’d figured it out. The person at that location would then give you the next clue. There were prizes for the first few to do it. I have to say I was astounded to come in second, especially after I stumbled badly on one clue for several minutes.

It did require more than one GM, though, so your idea would be a way to gear up towards the bigger exploration hunt. (Come to think of it, though, it is more a race for those who already have explored and know the lore and history of the area. They have the waypoints and the knowledge to interpret the clues).

I think we need Capes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Donari.5237

As I’ve said in other capes threads, to me a cape isn’t a lifeless thin panel of cloth hanging from one’s neck. They cover your front too. And they swirl at the hem. Even the one-shoulder capes of the Musketeers draped over the front and had body and motion. Capes, cloaks, etc, they exist for a reason and that is to keep rain off, to keep the body warm. Well, usually. Fashionable sorts can do all sorts of impractical garments. Yet somehow I don’t think a warrior slogging out into Orr is interested in a dangling bit of cloth behind him/her to offer a stranglehold to the foe just because it would look interesting.

I’ve made a number of capes RL, from medieval to 17th century to Victorian. I’ve never seen an MMO make one that seems to be an actual garment, one just as interesting as the armor it obscures. I sure hope that if/when ANet comes up with them (as a back item or part of a chest or shoulder piece) they make things the characters would wear as an integral part of their look rather than something pasted on.

I also hope they won’t only show up in outfit form, though I could see outfits being a stepping stone to iron out design issues.

Question To Roleplayers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Longevity is the key, indeed. You might be able to play through an LS chapter in two hours, but you can take years to get through an RP plot. RP is a means of telling collaborative stories. It’s a jump start to the creative juices, leading to art, poetry, and prose. It makes memories and friends.

The MMO version means more fluid meetings, as people have time to be online, rather than having to rigidly schedule sessions. It also does all the core world building, providing cities, towns, politics, disasters (LA’s fall was awesome for RPers), all the consensual reality stuff needed for creating a character who makes sense in that world.

For me it’s easier to design a character for a setting than just to randomly come up with a personality in a total void. Heck, RL it’s much easier for me to costume for a party if there’s a theme to it the way my friends do a different theme for every New Years. Context makes the character much more believable. So I can have a nobleman with a conman roguish side who’s part of the noble party scene in the Reach and has traveled with a circus, but I wouldn’t design a tomboy rodeo bronco rider in a world without horses.

RP with a good group can sustain a game for years.

Certainly those who think it is useful to report on enemy action will use it for that rather than for completion.

One short comment on legendary armor, if it is introduced: However it is obtained, it should not take as long per piece as a legendary weapon does. After all, you need six pieces to make a set. The question becomes, what percentage of the player base do we want to have access to the armor after what period of time, given some work on their part to assemble it? Obviously 100% in 7 days is a Bad Idea. But 2% in a year could be just as bad.

I’d prefer that it not be completely raid-tied, either, though I can see raids being the prime source of armor components. While there should be some rewards that are raid-specific to show you’ve done well in that area, what people are saying about legendary armor leans it towards more general use, and thus pressures non-raiders to raid or feel left out of something highly useful.

Good luck everyone.

GuzziHero isn’t an attention seeker, s/he is a solid contributor to the community and I will miss him/her. But there are many reasons to burn out on a game or any hobby, and I appreciate it when someone who’s been part of the community experience gives a heads up as to their departure (when it’s calm and friendly like this one).

My guild had an officer who vanished overnight in the middle of RP plots in which he was an integral part. Completely poofed. We were sure he’d been hit by a car, we were frantic and trying to dig out emails, phone numbers, anything to find out what had happened — until he sheepishly wandered onto our forums something like a year later to say RL had gotten in the way and then he’d been too embarrassed to show his face. A simple “sorry, goodbye, I have crap going on that means I can’t game” would have meant the world to us.
