The current series of events as of the Festival of the Four Winds would never have occurred as now described. And Lion’s Arch’s rebuilding is for the purpose of Krytan Trade with the rest of Tyria – for the benefit of the whole Krtan nation not just this rogue institution. Jennah would still open the Queen’s Pavilion to help raise funds – but for rebuilding a Lion’s Arch under direct rule of the Krytan Crown – of which she holds.

You seem to be under the strong illusion that a Lion’s Arch under Crown rule would disallow open and fair trade with the rest of the world? Seriously? Are you sure YOUR not under the effects of a powerful Mesmer???

It wouldn’t have occurred had YOU written it. But it would have occurred and it did in the absence of your own preferences.

I’ve said nothing about kryta having the inability to open fair trade if they take over an independent city state. But just because they MAY be fair doesn’t mean that city states allies would just roll over and allow it.

But how much faith in that promised fairness would anybody have in the queen if she ever did take an independent city state?

The Lionguard have no duty and have sworn no allegiance to the Krytan Queen. Might as well try to obligate all of the United States to fulfill their duty to Great Britain.

In the instance of the United States the secession from the rule of the British Crown was the singular will of the peoples of the Amercian colonies of that era. Thus and only thus the break from the Crown was valid.

In the case of Kryta at the time just after the Catalysm the duty of the Crown was to marshal all its forces and resources to put back the nation as best it could and as swiftly as it were able. However it was the will of the majority that all of Kryta as they knew it be retained by the Crown on behalf of the people.

It was NOT the will of the people to allow a cartel to take their former main city and port away from them to do as they will.

There was actually a big debate because a great many people did continue their allegiance to the crown.

edit: And keep in mind that a war was fought for the colonies. It wasn’t seen as a valid break until after the crown was strong armed into the decision.

4) however there is also no proof that they do not.
And that it’s perfectly possible that we may see sylvari children sometime in the future.

We have dev confirmation that sylvari don’t have the relevant internal biology capable of producing children.

“Physically, sylvari are male or female, and the relevant external biology is accurate on both, but they cannot sexually reproduce as the other races do; they have no internal organs capable of creating children.” http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dream_and_Nightmare

A) You stop making stuff up and I’ll stop using scientific terms. (Circular arguments aren’t strictly a scientific term btw. They are logical fallicies.) I asked you to show how the use of bows isn’t possible. You made the claim so I asked you to prove it. You have no source for that proof. Not in any of the games. All you can say is “it hasn’t been done therefor it can’t be done”. when I showed dev intention to do it you say “Doesn’t count because I don’t like that dev”.

B) I’ve played the games. I still do every once in a while. You refuse to “baby me” because you simply don’t have it at your disposal. You use random factoids that confirm nothing and mix them in with ridiculous ideas about the lore. And make some giant leap to say 1+green=bird.

First you say GW1 rules still apply. Then you say an axe is an appropriate focus. Where in GW1 does it ever say that an axe is an appropriate focus and a shooting weapon isn’t?

How about the entire previous 3 games+ expansion or for kittens like you, the original Guild Wars + GWEN. Stuff like Path to Revelations and Elusive Golemancer (and all tie ins to it in GW2), the entire invention of the Asura Gates, one of the primary reasons for the Infinity cube storyline in GW2, the existence of the Metamagicals lab, the existence of golems and how Power cores are designed compared to the much more efficient elementals and necrominions.

As for the source why corruption skills have a sacrifice and that minions assemble themselves/rip into existence from the underworld in case of the shade in gw2… i think that you just proved that you never even played necro, never even watched how the animations play out nor that you ever read any necro skill description, thus are a worthless kitten that shall be blocked and reported for trolling less than 5k AP nub.

Personal attacks are a sure sign of desperation. GG

Well great. if you have all of that to back up your outlandish claims, by all means. Point out specifically where in all that, support what you say. That staves have inate magic. That axes make better foci. that asura are innately poorer spell casters. any specific confirmation that you can cite would do wonders for your credibility.

But apparently, your reasoning is that the mere existence of magitech is confirmation that asura “can’t make good majicks”. Right. Your entire argument is based on circular reasoning that can only be true if you assume it already is.

“Everything is my source but I won’t show it”. Yeah, right.

Arrests the captains Council? For the crime of doing exactly what Kryta told them they could do 3 generation ago? That is as illogical as it gets. especially in the midst of this world ending dragon snafoo.

Really? – “told them they could”?? Seriously???

At that time Kryta was suffering from a total economic meltdown as a result of a massive tidalwave that destroyed their main city – Lion’s Arch which also was the seat of power of the ruling Dynasty of Kryta of which Queen Jennah is a member of.

The nation was in a state of a national emergency. So when a pirate cartel comes and takes control or your ruined main city what do you think Kryta was able to really do about it? In a word NOTHING!

At that time if Divinity Reach if it existed it was only in the early stages of construction. Also one has to understand the limitation of in-game design. The Lionguard of Queen Salma’s day was not a police/milita organisation.

The Lionguard at that time served as the security forces of Kryta the military. I would say that the Shining Blade served as a police force as well as Salma’s person guard. Since which other organisation could serve as such when your country just got shattered??

All you did is describe why Kryta did “tell them they could”.

The Lionguard at this time have nothing to do with Kryta. They are run by a Norn and that norn just happens to be on the Captains Council. How do you imagine Queen jenna is going to ‘order’ them to turn on the Captains council?

Source?

Dustfinger.9510 again little kitten, if you take lore, take it from the people which actually wrote it and didnt spit on it, aka from Ree, Will McDermott, Annie (and kinda John Stumme for the punny stuff).
Also magic being a free resorce to use just means there are no energy costs, sacrifice (self bleeding from corruptions) or resource buildup (cast time on minions) still exist and are mandatory.

Still no sources, huh? Gotcha.

Interestingly enough, most of the stuff Andele just rattled off isn’t applicable in GW2.

Marks, wells, ect require nothing to cast except a CD timer.

Using Spectral spells doesn’t seal off part of your soul. You can spam these skills forever. If your soul is somehow involved it is neither implied nor relevant to the game itself.

You don’t have to bother setting up a phylactery in game to go into lich form. (And in the greater lore of necromancy – once you go lich, you Don’t go back.)

There is no variation between Human and Asura Necromancy. Neither race is stronger or weaker at any part of it and there is no variation in how the spells or cast or set up.

And lastly, and Oh I wish it were true…our magic is farrrr from ignoring/disrupting ‘deceptions’ (aka Mesmers). If anything our lack of consistent aoe and gap closers makes fighting mesmers harder for us then other classes.

So….yeah….that whole consistency thing has already been thrown out the window imo.

yep. Recent interview contradicts Andele at multiple turns.

Esprits d’Orr : “How should we consider the cast of a spell according to the lore (and not from gameplay perspective) : Is it an incantation? Does it necessarily require a weapon to cast it? How is energy managed compared to GW1? Does casting a spell consume magical energy, or is it possible to cast as much as you want without any tiredness or decrease in effectiveness?”

Angel McCoy : “Magic is the lifeblood of Tyria. The entire world is infused with it, and it flows through everything via ley lines that criss-cross the planet.// The citizens of Tyria have ready access to this flow of magic from a very young age.”

a) Chinese whispers (as in no they dont get dev interviews but kitten they got told others got told by people who got told by a-net), same thing applies to anything Amccoy is in terms of lore

b) Bows dont shoot magic projectiles, they shoot arrows, same as guns using bullets (even in the mesmers case), in both staff, dagger and axe you create the effect and channel it past, doing such on a bow on rifle would not only be functionless (since it has no innate magic powers like a staff and scepter do), nor is it a proper focusing/shaping tool for attacks like ceremonial daggers or axes are.
WH5 is the closest thing we do to a physical attack using demonic insects from the stygian pits of hell so to say.

A) “Now let’s talk about the specifics Colin and I chatted about during our call.”

B) Source for “lol inate magic power of scepter and staff” please. You’ll have a source unless you are making this all up on the spot. Source for “properfocusing tools”. Without a source for the inate-ness of magic in staves, your argument falls flat. Bows inately shoot arrows and not magic while staves inatelyshoot …..nothing. So unless you can show that a staff has inate magic, there is absolutely no actual lore reason that a bow can’t shoot magic while a staff/axe can.

Basically, its not that Necros can’t use any weapon, but the weapons become more and more trivial to the actual effects they are causing. This is basically true of all the caster classes, they can just use magic with the “weapon” as the casting of that magic, but at what point does the weapon itself become completely meaningless except as “thing I can cast magic with”.

For example you could use a mace to cast magic, but is there anything actually special about what the mace is doing that, say, a spoon or a candy wrapper couldn’t do in its place? Bows are even more in this, because you can only have so many things that shoot arrows before you hit “necros shoot spooky ghost arrows because we’ve got 12 other bow weapon sets and thats the only thing left and its like 2am and I want to go home”.

That said, people who use magic are really able to do whatever the hell they want because ANet can just create a set of spells that very, very loosely extend from the physical object (as far as GW is concerned), and people would be happy (ex: ele dagger).

We already crossed that point when a-net said that the weapons are used as a focus to cast the spells. But it may be that the difference in what is used as a focus is that the foci channel the magic in different ways. That would explain why the same foci allow the same spells to be cast.

“if a person were to stretch too far, say by using an item she’s unfamiliar with or attempting a spell more powerful than what she’s used to, then that person is taking a risk. An uncontrolled spell can do terrible damage. For this reason, most intelligent magic-users stretch carefully into spells and magical items they don’t understand.” http://esprits-dorr.fr/node/261

Dagger causes spectral cuts and a bite (green slashes in black mist caused by it), it physically doesnt actually hit the enemy if you check it out (physical hit from all other weapons have those rocky/blob particles with white slashes).

Its very easy to notice on upscaled models based on its attachment point (aka its a on enemy effect like scepter and axe) or by wildly flailing with the dagger and not getting the effect (while for examine warrior swords mesmer swords or thief dagger always keep their hit effects on no hit attacks since they are actually on he weapon model.

What’s to keep them from doing the same with a sword? Slashing out with a sword and hitting them at close range with necro magic?

A) dont quote a site which said magic find works on champ boxes and that guild missions are independent from eachother

B) Yes it would work on bladed melee weapons as said above, it could be excused on hammers more than maces because of impact effects, then kinda on rifle and pistols, but bows would really need heavy loophole abuse for them to be put on necro.

A) I’ll quote any site that the devs see fit to give interviews to since we are discussing information from the devs rather than the interviewees complete grasp of every aspect of the game.

B) What loophole? How would a magic projectile from a bow be any different than a magic projectile from an axe or a staff?

Maybe outside of the Living Story, but the Living Story is making Tyria seem so small. Look at this release.

We have the return of one of the most interesting factions in Tyria today, the Zephyrites, and how much dialogue was given to them? There is a whole (boring imo) monologue and mundane conversation between three of the biconics about stuff that has nothing to do with the Zephyrites and then Taimi told us things that, as players with access to the map, we should have been able to explore and see for ourselves. You learn more information about the Zephyrites by sitting idle next to Taimi thant you do exploring the ship. The Living Story is blowing this chance to satisfy my desire as a player to explore the world of Tyria and through my character, engage with this world. I wanted to see traders from different parts of Tyria at the bazaar. I wanted to see the Zephyrites loading up their ship and drop hints of whatever their story is themselves. Taimi and the biconics keep being used as an exposition dump when they aren’t making the story all about themselves.

Compare this to Winds of Change (I’m a broken record I know) where we have numerous “encounters” (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Winds_of_Change_encounters) that were used to deliver story and lore about Cantha and how the consequences of our actions were changing the world. We see this a little bit with the two Lionguard patrolling and one is corrupt while the other is somewhat noble, but the volume of biconic banter far outweighs the voices given to the entire rest of Tyria. Sure there are a handful of Zephyrites with new dialogue and there is some dialogue left over from the last visit (Parker Cole and the other thief) that add flavour to this part of Tyria, but by choosing to put the Biconics in this and put the focus on them I feel like once again the story is overplaying them at the expense of a chance for players to more thoroughly immerse themselves in Tyria. It constantly feels like the game is about the biconics, even when they “include” the player as a “leader”, it’s an unconvincing illusion to distract that you aren’t engaging with and exploring the world on your own, you are being herded. When we did hear from Miku (the biconic equivalent) it was because her and her family were a core part of the story, it wasn’t fan service banter.

Anyone else tired of almost exclusively hearing from Kiel, Magnus and Evon? Why have a Captain’s Council with eight members when all we are going to hear about is two of them (with the occasional detail given to the others). The finale for season one actually deals with the council making a decision the players disagree with, when there is lore that states the council is half of the decision making process, the Commodore is the other half. This never even comes up in the game, which is strange because the foolishness of that particular decision was highly criticised by many players. Do we even know how Lawson voted?

Sometimes the Living Story feels like a PoV book. It comes off with a very narrow focus on a handful of non-essential characters and seems to lose the ability to be involved in the bigger picture. I think that’s the wrong way to write an MMO story.

I also agree with the morality point. I think GW2’s stance on morality is really hurting the ability to tell fresh and interesting stories. The bad guys are bad and we never engage with them beyond that initial judgement. The good guys are good and do the good thing. We see slight departures from this with the corrupt Lionguard and very minor characters exhibiting racism, but it’s a world of difference from a show like Game of Thrones where the bad guys can be just as sympathetic as the ones that do the right thing.

You’re comparing one Living Story release to a story line that took 7 months to come out.

In lore? Maybe nothing. In magic? Weapons can be enchanted, hexed, cursed etc but other than that magical tools involve athames, candles, focii etc. Athames, or ceremonial blades can NEVER be used to actually cut anything. It would ruin the athame, much like ele daggers, necro axe, or mesmer greatsword.

And i have no intention of desiring a Longbow that does not fit this class at all just because other mmos think its cool. What the hell am i supposed to shoot? snakes? preposterous. Poison arrows? its been done.

Honestly I have no idea what current weapon could possibly work as a 2h power weapon for a necromancer I mean i could see them with a land trident or a scythe, but anything else would require a vast amount of looking the other way and pretending its not completely ridiculous.

There is no hard class lore in GW2 like there is in other games. What you’re doing is arbitrarily applying other game rules into gw2. if there’s no lore reason then there is nothing to say that it doesn’t fit the class. Other games necro doesn’t fit with certain weapons because there is actual lore reason behind it. What you decide fits your necro isn’t the same for all playable necros. By saying that there is no lore reason but it just doesn’t fir a necro is putting the cart before the horse. It’s arbitrary game dogma that has no rhyme or reason when applied to GW2.

Agreed.

if a necro can wield a bow or a hammer then the arbitrary rules set by other games shouldn’t apply for what fits a necro. I would love a LB as well a a sword and GS.

Actually, GW1 rules do apply. Ranged weapons (that aint staff/scepter) and melee brute weapons (aka monk and mesmer weapons) cant be used by necros since they cant use their powers with them. IF we would need another source of ranged power (you know, except out freaking profession mechanic) the options would be limited to a) using a melee weapons as a ranged focusing equipment b) a rifle/automatic firepower.
Just as scepter/focus are like the lowest on the warrior equipment list, so are bow/shortbow on necro.

I think the diffrence is that GW2 is really trying to create a whole wider world. GW1 only hinted at a wider world by focusing on the small of small groups with one single perspective. But we didn’t get any look into the wider world that those groups didn’t specifically encounter themselves. The only way we got any specifics into that world is with expansions that put a small group with a small perspective into a new area. Imagine how many expansions we would have had to have just to get the informations we’ve already gotten in GW2.

GW2 krytan lore is pretty clear. The official wiki stated that LA is independent of Kryta. There is no confusion beyond ignoring the current lore. The lionsguard are no longer defenders of Kryta.

Lions Guard no longer server the Throne or the Crown. When the current members of the Lions Guard joined, they did so with the full understanding that they were not under the jurisdiction of Kryta. They are run by a norn, after all. Any arguments the Crown could have had against LA being it’s own institution are were rendered moot when they agreed to Kryta’s independence. It doesn’t matter that Kryta was pressured into it as we see in RL how England has been pressured in losing a giant empire throughout history.

Is magic hereditary?

Dustfinger.9510

It’s not uncommon for a toddler to begin showing signs of magical talent by creating illusions to entertain herself, putting up a crude barrier between itself and something threatening it, or producing water when thirsty.

Magic, for any profession, is nothing without the knowledge, diligence, and alertness that any user brings to it.

There are as many individual ways to tap into that magic as there are people in Tyria. Some follow the methods taught to them by mentors or teachers. Others devise their own special style and relationship with magic. Some use items to enhance or channel their powers, such as the Zephyrites who use their crystals to access the Aspects.

Specific magic seems to be like any other skill. You may have a natural talent for it but it is no guarantee of success in that field. Two athletes may produce athletic children. Or, the may not. The ones that are athletic may not be athletic in the same way their parents are. Or, they may just not have the same interest and motivations that drove their parents in their own lives.

So using the athletic analogy, would two soccer players produce better soccer players in their children? Quite possibly. How much would be due to genes and how much is due to upbringing and social pressure depends on the individual situation. But they may also produce baseball players, sprinters or doctors. And maybe even a hobo every now and then.

But they aren’t human except in appearance and basic mannerisms. Likewise, charr aren’t cats except in appearance and basic mannerisms. e.g: Ree deliberately had the charr refer to Cobiah as a ‘mouse’ when he first encountered them in Sea of Sorrows. So the connection is definitly deliberate.

Is the charr a dog or a cat?

They are confirmed by devs to be “feline” and they are based on the idea of a demon cat. However, that does not make them cats in lore. It means they are inspired by the idea of cats and we have RL animals that are also feline that have no relation to cats.

^ That.

The Lionguard do not form the bulk of the krytan military. They do not protect the crown. They used to.

They were replaced by the Seraph. They continued their duties in LA until LA broke from the crown. The Lionguard broke with them. That is why the Lionguard are lead by a norn rather than a human.

As others have said, they are charr.

But fun fact outside of lore: The idea of their artistic design in GW1 was that of a look of ‘demonic cat’.

Race and Profession Combos (Lore Wise)

Dustfinger.9510

I do have one link.

What sort of basic personality does this profession have?

Eric Flannum: “To me, the Guardian feels a lot like playing a caster who wears heavy armor. This is in contrast to what you’d typically think of when you think of the Paladin archetype found in many games, which feels like a melee bruiser who also knows a few spells. The Guardian also doesn’t feel particularly religious, but he does feel spiritual. What I mean by that is that the Guardian embodies certain ideals without ascribing to any one faith in particular, which is also a bit different than your typical Paladin archetype.”

“They are not tied to a particular race, philosophy, or group of gods but rather to a larger concept of proactive defense, of taking the fight to a foe and protecting those you fight alongside while appealing equally to humanity’s defensive nature and the Charr’s desire to rule the battlefield.”

Asura already had cute feline qualities. some of the origional female faces have features that look very reminicent of kittens. and i know one of the male faces has pupils that can be narrowed quite a bit.

Lore-Matching Skritt Playable Race

in Lore

Dustfinger.9510

I’m of the opinion that they can be a playable race, solo. Hear me out. I can back it up with lore.

One of the biggest problems we have is that they aren’t smart enough to learn magic alone. This is actually a big misunderstanding. Skritt don’t actually get ’smarter", as we know it. They just communicate at such high speeds that they can tackle a problem from multiple angles. but their intelligence remains the same. Their real problem is their ability to focus on a problem. But the more skritt are in the area the more potential there is to be one that can stay focused.

So, knowing this, we can undertsand how skritt can learn magic in large communities of skritt. And we actully see a guild bounty that may well be a skritt using mesmer magic. I forget the exact name but there was something about thae namie that said skritt and it’s in the form of an animal.

How would one skritt be able to do physical proffessions like warrior or guardian? Excellant question, I’m glad you asked. Anybody can be a warrior. All you have to do is swing a sword. And the guardians use the more innate magics that require less study so it makes more sense that a lone skritt might turn to that. Can one skritt typically go out and kill ettin at will? probably not. But neither could the average asura. or even the average human, for that matter. But not every warrior uses pure strength as we see with the weopns that focus on bleeds and such.

So both of the problems of physical capabilities and mental capabilities are taken care of according to the lore. the biggest i think being the mental cpabilities. Skritt aren’t stupid. they speak ‘stupidly’ becasue they assume we have access to the same information they do becasue they innately have the ability to get alot of information. And when they appear to get smarter, they are really only applying a large enough degree of focus from a large enough number of skritt to solve a large problem. Single skritt an still solve problems fit for a single individual. They just need to maitain focus. granted, not all have a large capacity for focus but then, playable characters are above average as well.

National Boundaries

in Lore

Dustfinger.9510

On the topic of jurisdiction:

Before the world was neatly cut up and divided out to everybody, jurisdiction wasn’t a real concept. Powers defended what boundaries they could. if an individual got on the wrong side of a power, either a bounty was set on their head or a search party was sent out looking for them. Even into the territiories of other powers. The only ones protected by the ‘jurisciction’ of other powers were the few individuals who those powers needed to keep things running.

And even then, that protection was only to the point of what either side was willing to go to war over. I.E: Most powers would be unwilling to go to war over a peasant who stole from a nobleman in another territiory. Though, most powers wouldn’t be willing to risk allowing an armed ‘posse’ from another power to do as they pleased either. They wouldn’t spend their own resources to find someone elses thief as we do today. In those cases bounty hunters would have been ideal.

Sylvari are not created from the dead. That was an asura theory of why the sylvari look like humans. But devs have stated that it is wrong because they state that sylvari are the Pale trees interpretation of humanity due to her interaction with Rowan but she only saw the outside of them so they don’t imitate the inner workings.
