Why does it have to be a lore-based playable race instead of one something else. The Sylvari hid in isolation through all of GW1. We COULD have playable Camels perhaps!

The Sylvari as a race are only about 25 years old, and Trahearne’s the very first born of the lot of them. GW1 happened 250 years ago.

That side, Tengu, Kodan, and (if only..) Centaurs.

Why don't we ALL play berserker warriors?

I play one of every class. My main and my most played is an engineer. I also favor my mesmer a lot.

My warrior absolutely bores me to tears in comparison and I only bring him out when I absolutely must quickly dps the everloving crap out of something. Generally my engie’s utilities and maneuverability are more useful.

Lack of skimpy male clothing

Seriously, there is hardly any skimpy male clothing. Females seem to get most of the revealing tops – why not Guys? It’s sexist. One of the more revealing male tops is probably the feathered top (but even then, the male feathered top has NOTHING on the bloobs that female zodiac tops have), yet it has long sleeves that really ruin it.

And while we’re at it, there should be a ‘Lord Faren’s Underwear’ skin. Seriously, I’d pay gems for that! Why hasn’t Anet made this already? It would sell like hotcakes. I’m sure many players would want skimpy beach-themed armor skins.

There should also be red/orange/yellow/green/blue/purple/pink flesh colored skins in the gemstore too (sylvari shouldn’t get ALL the skin colors, it’s extremely racist).

Edit: I’ve included a ton of pics below for comparison. My point is the amount of skin showing, or lack thereof, for the males.

I’ve also included a photoshopped version of my elementalist with a blue flesh skin (also wearing the zodiac top) and Lord Faren’s underwear – because I want a ‘Dr. Manhattan’ (From the Watchmen comic series) outfit for him one day. If only his underwear skin were available…

The point that you even thought to bring this to the forums and complain – explains what is fundamentally wrong with our society.

Please elaborate on how this post, or which part of it, has anything to do with what might be fundamentally wrong with society. I sincerely do not understand.

I see two statements he made which could have been left out, but I’m curious.

I want "The Prince" to lead the Pact.

As nice as this would be, you cannot easily have Game of Thrones-esque serious themes (how one truthfully behave during a war, the cost of honor and your decisions, all these things) in a game of this rating and genre. Well, you can, but it would take a lot of care, skill, and cleverness, and it would be unavoidably dark in some aspects, so I don’t see it happening.. I was actually legitimately surprised (but pleased) when we killed Scarlet, because it seems too grey for the kid-friendly theme Anet almost seems to be trying to cultivate at this point.

That aside, Machiavelli’s The Prince was more than likely a scathing satire, so it probably shouldn’t be used as a source to back this kind of thing..

Being an atheist in Tyria would be the epitome of moronic. The gods exist for reals 100% there. A character that is an atheist in that world is living a lie.

I wonder how the Norn reconcile that. I mean, they literally have creatures from Grenth’s realm spilling into the Shiverpeaks… how do you then not believe in Grenth? It’s kinda hard.

The Norn do believe in them, I think they call them the Spirits of Action or something along those lines. I know that they do, I just don’t have enough caffeine in me yet to remember with any clear detail the specifics of it. They definitely give a big ol’ acknowledgement to their existence.

Or perhaps you are upset that the sylvari have no conflict withen their society over this subject? Maybe that is what you are really asking for? I’m sure there are strictly heterosexual and strictly homosexual Sylvari, if they were all the same, then they would be boring. We simply have never found one to state their sexuality what their is, is all

You also won’t find one stating their gender either.

True, but I assume that they do have specific genders even if they can’t have kids.

1. One of the devs stated that they’re basically a race of pansexuals. I’d be surprised if they ever give a sylvari character a stated preference. If anyone could remember what dev said that and where and could back me up on the source, I’d be immensely grateful. It miiight have been Ree Soesbee.

2. They have sexes, yes, which is the physical part. They are stated to not exactly have gender roles, which is the mental part. In psychology and medicine (and.. most places) sex = what you’ve got between your legs, gender = how you identify in your mind. Note that the devs have stated they don’t have gender roles, but they still act, frequently, like they have them. And then you’ve got that extremely gendered cultural armour. That part is a bit of a mess with “what they say” vs. “what they show” so take it with a bit of a grain of salt.

I am saying there is an unknown element at play here, one of which we are actually aware of as an unknown element as the story progresses. And at no point did we actively seek to understand it.

As I also said and you cleverly avoided… Why did no one inquire with the pale tree? After all Scarlet was one of her children which she had a connection too.

But ultimately I guess you’re obviously the type of player this story is designed to appeal too. And my complaint is that it is too simple and easy to simple pick and use this rationale as your story. It’s borderline cliche, it was a villain, we had to kill them. How boring and how unheroic.

Like Erukk said above and I had forgotten, the machine kills. Regardless, Omadd is dead and Asura are notoriously stingy with their tech so he might have been the only one capable of operating it, it might actually be illegal to operate it now due to the events with Scarlet, and who would want to climb willingly into a machine that inflicts death or an insanity and elder dragon combination? I certainly would not volunteer anyone and would be utterly horrified at the prospect of someone else getting into it. If it could be researched without cramming anyone in it, I’d be all for that and that would be excellent. But too little too late, and that is a legitimate writing issue. Not even so much to “save” Scarlet, but to figure out why this happened.

I didn’t “cleverly avoid” anything, I didn’t find it worth commenting on. The Pale Tree says what she likes and I imagine that if she had any intention of speaking up, she would have by now, or that could simply be Idiot Ball writing again. I’ve no earthly idea and frankly don’t care much. You can’t harangue the pale tree into talking about things and you certainly can’t threaten her (with any amount of ease) and I imagine the important information will probably be coming from someone like DE 2.0. I learned a long time ago to stop expecting important information from her.

The story appeals to me in some fashions and in many others does not. This is just not one of the particular points I had any issue with. I had quite a lot more trouble when Caithe killed a Nightmare Courtier I had promised wouldn’t be harmed because she forcibly broke my word – but I wouldn’t have made that promise in the first place if I’d been allowed, because like Scarlet, you can’t save a Nightmare Courtier.

At least with Scarlet, no promises were made.

The thing about people, heroes or not, is that they’re generally not black and white. And I find it much less cliche for Anet to write something that can be viewed kitten grey. I never said it was awesome killing her from an IC point of view (I’m firmly against the death penalty irl and I doubt my character’s stellar with just up and killing folks, but this is a fantasy game and all), because there’s nothing awesome at all about having to kill someone, but with Scarlet being as she is, you must. Heroes cannot always go the saintly and good route to do right by the people they’re trying to protect.

Disappointed that scarlet died.

While it is nice rationalizing this after the fact…

The point I am making is no one tried and that the lack of trying or caring is not heroic.

Our heroes knew that entering Omadd’s device fundamentally messed her up, but their response was still “kill” not “save”. It doesn’t matter if it were possible to save her or not. Perhaps she was branded and beyond saving. But what if she were the other, crazy and in need of help. Why was that idea, considering the world we are in, never once entertained.

I would have rationalized it the same way, whether it came before or after the fact. Anyway..

The thing is that it does matter. A lot.

Say there’s an enormous boulder teetering at the edge of a cliff. This boulder, on its journey down to the cliff’s edge, has steamrolled and killed numerous people, guided down this path by gravity. If you were to try to stop the boulder at the edge of the cliff, there is an extremely high probability it will crack the outcrop it’s on and take you down with it. And if you don’t kick it over now, who knows – maybe others will come try to stop it and end up getting crushed? Or maybe someone will pass below without realizing the danger? You can’t stop the boulder. As you stand there, you feel the earth beneath you cracking, and you only have one option. You kick the boulder off the cliff so it doesn’t kill or devastatingly injure you and, likely, others as well.

And then someone tells you that you should have tried to reason with that boulder instead of mercilessly kicking it off the cliff.

Do you honestly think that if you sat down and tried to talk sense into Scarlet, that she would listen? Do you think she’d actually let you take her to jail or some sort of institution? And do you think if you somehow miraculously managed that feat, that she’d actually stay there? That she would let you help her? That she would, or could, change? She can’t. If she’s truly influenced by a dragon, all you can do in that instant (because you might not ever get another if she gets away from you) is put an end to it, and isn’t that the more merciful thing for her and everyone else, in the end?

So we only save those who we already know are savable and never try to save those that are not?

Logic dictates that if one is not capable of being saved then it would certainly be a waste of resources and energy, and possibly put you at high personal risk (as well as others) if you make the attempt regardless. So yes. I would say that is a very sound statement.

I have no intention of trying to save the Claw of Jormag, for example.

Hell, why didn’t a brave Sylvari step up to sit in Omadd’s device and try and find out exactly what Scarlet saw. The Asura could have easily provided restraints and would have happily experimented.
Or hell… Just ask the pale tree… Because apparently she already knows something.

For heroes… We sure didn’t try very hard.

It sounds to me as though you are saying that it’s heartless to have put Scarlet out of her misery, while in the same breath saying that another Sylvari should have possibly subjected themselves (or been forced, judging by the “restraints” comment) by Asura and subjected to Omadd’s machine which, as far as we know, breaks ones mind and leaves them open to the torment of at least one Elder Dragon.
For the sake of someone who, if aware of what they were doing, killed thousands and never showed even a hint of remorse.
Am I reading this correctly?

Yikes. Doubly so as I’m a Sylvari player. They’ve already got a healthy distrust of Asura.

Please note that she seems helpless, but if she wanted to back out, she could do it at any time she wanted to (she has an one person teleport). She protected the drill to her end!

You aren’t remotely looking at the issue from the correct view point. Essentially Scarlet is indoctrinated by Mordremoth. When you take that into account, none of her actions are of her own free will but the will of Mordremoth. Essentially Ceara is a victim of the dragons, just like every single branded charr in the dragonbrand. (For example)

When you take this into consideration, we are nothing but murderers.
[snip]

So remember that our heroes of this story are nothing more than murderers. We murdered a Sylvari who wasn’t in control of her actions. You would not murder a patient in a mental hospital because they cannot stop themselves from acting up. You would seek a way to help them. Did our heroes even try? It never for one moment crossed their minds.

Perhaps unintentionally… Arenanet have painted our little band of heroes as heartless murderers. Because it was the heroic thing to do, to stop Scarlet… Right? Or just the easy route, the path of least resistance. Some heroes we are.

So which is it?
Is she like a branded, or is she like a mental patient? Because those two things are totally not alike at all. I certainly don’t feel like a murderer when I kill a branded charr, and putting slavering, near-mindless, malevolent dragon minions on the same level as mental patients (as your comparison does) has an insane amount of unfortunate implications anyway.

She is out of her head, to some extent or another, and something is influencing her, but to what degree? We don’t really know how deep it runs, both her insanity and the influence, but either way, she is either an agent of destruction or is destroying of her own. Neither is acceptable. She dropped her Alliances on LA and looked down from her drill and smiled. Thousands died. And I don’t even begin to think a person with Scarlet’s resources is the kind of person you can incarcerate easily and, I doubt, at all.

Scarlet’s life is not worth the lives of potentially thousands more innocent people.

From my perspective, it was less of a cold-blooded “heartless” murder and more of a mercy killing. Mercy for Scarlet and anyone who would encounter her.

Allow me to put it this way. Sylvari are not homosexual. They’re pansexual. The entire race is pansexual. Having a male Sylvari in a relationship with another male Sylvari isn’t a homosexual relationship. Its a pansexual relationship, because both individuals are pansexual.

And this makes them undesirable to you as representatives to your persuasion… how again?

He just said. Because they’re not homosexual. It is not a representation or inclusion of homosexuality if the characters are not homosexual.
Take it from an actual pansexual.

My relationship with my wife, for example, is not a representation of heterosexuality because neither of us are heterosexual, even if we are male and female.

No matter how much I’d like to see a male/male sylvari relationship, it would only be inclusion, really, for pansexuals, because it’s representing a male/male pansexual relationship (unless a gay person decides to count it as inclusion on an individual basis, it varies between people, the OP is not in this boat). And unless it’s very explicitly stated that for some reason those two particular sylvari really do prefer males for some reason, and I don’t really see Anet getting that specific any time soon. This is why he’s asking for humans, because they don’t default to pansexual, and it’s much more likely a male/male relationship with them would be heavily implied to be homosexual instead of bisexual or pansexual.

Hopefully I have explained this concisely and clearly.

This keeps happening constantly on my male sylvari mesmer when I use blink and various other similar mes skills.

It also happens on my other three male sylvari characters with various other displacement/stealth skills, but their classes (engie, warrior, necro) don’t use those mechanics as much.

My graphics settings vary generally from medium to “best performance” for big zerg events. It happens with both. It also tends to last for quite a while.

For some reason I can see the champ trains becoming much more popular again tomorrow.

Yeah because god forbid some challenge in the game, people rather autoattack bosses for hours instead of having a small challenge.

What happened with gamers these days?

It’s funny because as an engineer, my only real option is to stand there braindead for half the fight using rifle autoattack when I’d much rather be more actively participating.

And fail anyway. I’ve done it a few times since patch and every time the knight I was on failed. Feels great.

You’re not the one making the knight fail. It’s not a 1 person meses up =failure etc,
I’m also using a condition build, I spend half the fight rezzing people. and adding buffs when I can.

Try doing the same.

Yes. I stand there spamming rifle, 5 elixer gun, popping my healing turret, using my regens on people, dropping Elixer R on downed folks, supply crate, combo heals, etc. I know, believe me. Most of the fight I’m just standing there looming over zerkers and trying to make sure they won’t die while plinking away with the rifle or rezzing people. And trying to get the dead to actually use waypoints.

God, do I know.

It’s some sort of role, and at least now I don’t have to try to crap DPS onto the thing to get a reward, but man, there’s a reason I never played monk in GW1. I’m no guardian, and this isn’t a role I really like playing. I had to do similar during Tequatl but there my role was much more active and involved. Had to move from turret to turret, making sure everyone was healed up while keeping adds away, keeping an eye on Teq, avoiding the waves – using actual skill and strategy. That was great fun.

It’s not about how well they play said character, but if that character is strong enough. That’s what a dps check is about.

I saw so many level 80 characters in, at least, exotic gear that were lying dead in front of the watchknight after his aoe pull. You can have the best gear in the game and won’t contribute anything to the fight because you didn’t understand the, really simple, core mechanics of that encounter.

Or you’re an engineer who’s kitten near useless so you’re focused on healing the zerks and keeping them alive to down the stupid thing until you can condi it, and surprise surprise, the orange aoe prior to the dodge doesn’t even appear on the ground half the time so you get sucked in. And you’re literally visually impaired and the telegraphs on the thing sort of blow.

Which is what keeps happening to me. I wonder how colorblind players feel during the holograms and attunements.. lol green and red, really? Are you guys even aware of how common colorblindness is?

An odd thing also keeps happening where I do manage to dodge the vacuum hammer, but it’s like it goes through my in-process dodge and slaps me to the ground anyway.

Also, if some jerk-wad ele or other engie drops a firewall in front of me during the no-condi portion for some god-forsaken reason, my 1 rifle skill (which is about the only thing I can use) combos with it and throws fire damage around. Nice. Great way to troll.

I hate to sound spiteful, I mean this with complete sincerity. As a QA tester for another game, this event just makes me feel sort of embarrassed.

For those who done it, did you do it before the hot fix last night, as today when I tried it, as soon as I get near her, be it in stealth, teleport, etc she instantly knocks me back, even with quickness etc its instant knock back.

I’m the guy that beat her to death earlier in the thread and I did it after the first hotfix. I couldn’t even get to her before then. I was also with a party during this period on an earlier run in which I also pummeled her with my wrench and our mesmer blinked up to her and finished her. Our two warriors were also standing on top of her. She never had a chance to shield.

After the second hotfix, though? Yeah, she tossed mines on me and threw me all over that room, had to rely on Kasmeer once and Elixer S another time just to get to her through the giant haze of AOEs and bounce-backs, and she got her shield up almost immediately both times.

Anyway, when all is said and done and theories are tossed around about the Sylvari being minions, always remember – how likely would it be for Anet to make an entire playable race turn out to be dragon minions? Even with all the evidence stacked against it, that is what truly makes that theory ridiculous to me.

Killing Scarlet was absolutely wrong. She should have stood trial for her crimes and so much more could of been explained. Suppose she was too dangerous to be kept alive by ArenaNet’s standards.

That seemed to have been part of the point.

“What’re you gonna do, put me in JAIL? Ha.”

I strongly get the impression it’d be a hell of a thing, trying to lock up and keep a person with the sort of resources Scarlet has.

Regarding letting her talk, as curious as I am, I’d rather not allow her any more time to run her mouth, stroke her own ego, possibly fling more insults, or use some sort of kill command. I was so tired of her I just wanted to beat the life out of her, and Braham just sped it along for me. I’m content getting the answers from other people who won’t potentially BS me anyway. And she gets to go to the grave on that – having been told to shut up, that no one cares. A fitting end for an egomaniac.

And doubly wonderful for me, a sylvari engineer beating a sylvari engineer to death with a wrench, from my gameplay perspective. I’m happy with how she went out, even if I might have to wait a bit longer for some answers she might have not even given, anyway.

Mixed feelings. Mostly pleased, but, well..

I was annoyed that the content launched bugged for several hours. I work QA for another game and.. that was pretty bad.

The knight fights were alright when they worked right. There’s an issue that causes the large orange aoes to not show frequently, I asked in map chat and several other people were having the same problem. They also don’t consistently drop boxes. It seems entirely random whether they will or not, which doesn’t make me very inclined to want to replay them. Between not being able to see when to dodge, playing an engineer as my main (everything is conditions) and their loot being wonky, it doesn’t really feel worth it for the armor repair fees.

I despise the clusterkitten that is the hologram fight, but that’s because I’m visually impaired and I couldn’t tell what the christ was going on in that zergy aoe lagged out mess. Not to mention, the large hologram puts flashing lights all over my screen and I fear that if I were epileptic it would’ve sent me right into a grand mal. It felt like I was at a really bad rave.

Regarding the couple, eh. You tried. As a non-heterosexual person it felt like I was being pandered to desperately, however. They’re cute and that’s about as deep as it goes. Marjory did manage to look heartwrenchingly pitiful at least.

There were also some awkward moments but it was mostly caused by animation and camera limitations, as well as Braham’s lines/voice acting striking me as unintentionally hilarious. Not sure. Maybe because he just sounded so unconcerned and unmoved, even with his leg being broken. There’s an issue when Trahearne, the guy who seems to have emotionally died somewhere back in Orr years ago and sounds like a British Microsoft Sam, emotes better than you.

With the stuff I didn’t like out of the way – bravo. It gave me actual joy to equip my toolkit, walk up to Scarlet, and beat her in the face with a wrench until she was dead. Screw stomping her. She deserved no less than having her head caved in, and it was immensely pleasing to oblige.

As I have four sylvari characters, I’m very, very excited about Mordremoth. And possible new zones opening up in Maguuma especially. I’ve honestly not been this excited about the game since its launch. I knew it was coming, I knew which dragon it was, but it’s still fantastic. I’m even excited that I’ll get to hear my character’s voice again. Hopefully, anyway. I know he can’t keep going on as a silent observer forever.

I also appreciated the extra console text for Engineers. Makes sense for the profession, and it soothed the pain, somewhat, of being stuck with rifle’s Hip Shot and Overcharged Shot alone for nearly the entire Knight battles (and horrible, god-forsaken people dropping fire walls that my bullets combo’d with and caused me to set myself on fire due to reflection)..

Oh, before I forget. Kinda related. Did not much care for Tormented weapons being put behind black lion tickets but I think the entire concept of black lion tickets is hideous anyway. I don’t want to feel special or anything just because I played GW1, I’m equally annoyed at Zodiac weapons being stuck that way, too. I’d just like to be able to open the gem store and just straight with gems buy a stupid chunky purple greatsword for my garish mesmer without the claim ticket BS getting in the way. That’s not going to result in me forking over cash for keys to open chests, it’s going to result in me shrugging and gathering mats for Vision of the Mists instead. I would’ve gladly bought a gemstore Tormented skin, in repayment for the sheer pleasure of being allowed to bash Scarlet’s Blighted head in.

It’s an anxiety thing and as someone with anxiety, I was rather disgusted by them adding this. Because it was treated like nothing more than a joke. When this happens, you feel like you are literately dying, it is utterly frightening.

I have anxiety, too. A diagnosed disorder. I get the agonizing, can’t-breathe hiccups, too. It’s bad enough to be debilitating at times and it is certainly painful.

That said? I can’t wrap my head around it being offensive. It was intended to be endearing, clearly. And perhaps a bit funny. And as someone who gets nervous hiccups? I’ll be one of the first to admit that it does, in fact, sound hilarious when you’re trying to say something grave and serious only to be interrupted by your own hiccups.

It was treated like a joke. So awkwardly thrown in and not serious at all. Many of us can not speak when this happens. …How nice you thought it was… ‘cute’… I wonder if my other half thinks it’s cute when I lock up and can’t breathe nor talk… Hmm…

Yes. As character quirks often are. And I’ll have you know, my wife thinks it’s cute, when it’s not cripplingly severe. Even if it is a tell for a fullblown oncoming attack and allows her to react in time. It can be both.

Honestly. I promise Anet isn’t trying to be a bunch of insensitive kittens to disabled people, amputees, and nervous hiccuppers just by featuring people who share the same things in their game and occasionally in a lighthearted fashion.

Khalfu Wintersun (Ash legion, OoW thief) is very laid back, introspective.. A bit of an intellectual and philosophical sort, so that already makes him a bit odd. He has Flame ancestry which gives him some complicated feelings on both charr and human sides. He has some issue with Charr social structuring and general attitude, and humans tend to be more laid back, which he appreciates. He gets on well with humans who are open and friendly toward him, and respects their resilience and adaptability.

Unfortunately some humans aren’t so welcoming, so he has to be guarded until he can get a feel for whether they’re alright with him, or if they absolutely hate his guts for being charr.

He’s studied what he thinks of as “the Ascalon issue” from both sides. The Charr took of the lands from their original inhabitants. The humans fought and won them from the charr, similarly, which he doesn’t begrudge them of. He disliked the searing and found it gross overkill by the Flame Legion, using cheap tricks to overrun an enemy who was entirely defenseless to such an attack. Disgusting, honorless, and vulgar.. as the Flame Legion has wont to be. It repulses him that some of his people think it was a good decision, still.

He feels that what Adelbern did was just as cowardly and reprehensible, if not moreso; a disservice to his own people and a low blow against the charr who had practically already won their prize by honest means. And especially that it cruelly trapped the humans who had resided in Ascalon there for possibly eternity, unaware of the world around them and likely in mental torment, constantly expecting an assault for however many decades or centuries their souls will continue to linger. He finds it unforgivable, on behalf of both the humans and the charr.

And he thinks the similar event in Orr was considerably worse. Orr is a land of horrors, of an enslaved people who, tragically, should have been long laid to rest and were robbed of that by just one corrupt person in power going too far. It chills him; when he thinks of Orr, he thinks of what the Flame Legion could have reduced the Charr to. Had things gone differently, could they have suffered a similar fate?

Suffice to say that he’s perfectly fine with the treaty. He’s a pretty mellow, cool cat, heh.

Go Norn or go home.
The answer is simple. Norn are masters of the hunt, and Charr are beasts to be hunted.

You are in the wrong place for that sort of attitude…

Charr board. You want to be all Norn, you have your own board. Go there.

I just want to say this had me cracking up. I think you’re taking your charr RP a little too seriously (and personally), bud.

That aside, I play four sylvari, three asura, a human, and a charr. I played a norn once but didn’t care for it much. In a one on one fight? I’d put my money on the norn every time.

Honestly, just go play Guild Wars 1. The norn in GW2 have been dumbed down a bit into a bunch of drunk stereotypes, even though they are still intimidating. In the original game, when I interacted with norn, it felt like I could do something wrong and one of them would go bananas at any moment and rip my poor, tiny human limb from limb without even a modicum of effort or care, or maybe even kill me on accident by looking at me too hard, and I was the guy who (in my mind anyway), dealt with the lich, beat down on Shiro, and handled Abaddon’s baloney.

Jora was especially alarming. And much bigger than the GW2 norn. They were positively massive in GW1.

Counter the Miasma gas?

What feasible ways are there to counter the miasma gas, so the Pact can sent troops inside LA safely?

My guess:
Asura geniuses suddenly invented poison gas masks. (Asuran Sues saves the day again!)

I’m pretty critical of the writing myself, but, uh..

Gas masks would not make whoever potentially comes up with them a sue, not remotely, even if it’s asura. At all. Aquabreathers already exist, and gas masks are actually almost stupidly easy to make irl.

Not to mention that more sophisticated-looking gas masks actually exist (but currently serve no function mechanically) in the game itself.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gas_Mask_Skin

Gas masks and a bunch of air eles, or even just one very powerful one, would be ideal but I doubt either will happen, because it’s so obvious and easy as a solution. :\

This happens constantly to my male sylvari mesmer when I take any kind of mask off him, including the aquabreather. His eyes are actually stark white and not at all prone to reflecting environmental colors, and I would notice if it was an environmental reflection. It’s startling to go from white eyes to blood red.

It very rarely ever happens on my other three male sylvari. All four use different faces and eye colors. It also never happens to the mesmer when he’s actually wearing the mask.

Try Lichen, I have that skin tone on my vari necro and I think it’s pretty close. The painting has a lot more variation than you’ll get in game though.

My mesmer vari has a very dark tone, I forget the name but it’s super dark green verging on black (Nightwood, maybe? It’s toward the bottom right of options when you scroll right). He has vivid deep pink leaves with a bright purplish pink glow.

Here they are:

I hate to hijack the thread, but what gloves are those that your necro is wearing? The yellow fingertips. I’d love those for my mesmer (assuming the male version is the same..) but I looked at a few armor sites and couldn’t find them.

Stuck in combat mode after combat has ceased

Egon Vidar.9125

This has been an absolute nightmare during the new LA event. There are so many mobs everywhere, which just makes it worse. 5-10 minutes to break combat (unless it decides to make itself permanent and require me jumping to my death to fix it), all the while trying to dodge mobs who will slap me and just make it worse, all so I can switch out a skill or use a waypoint.

And yes, it’s bad on my ranger, and also my main, which is an engineer and unfortunately requires some situational skill swaps or weapon swaps.

I haven’t noticed it being as bad on my casters or heavy classes, or my thief, but it’s certainly still prominent and annoying. It’s definitely grating on the ele since, like the engie, he does not have a natural weapon swap.

Greatsword Rush attack bug

Egon Vidar.9125

There’s also a weird problem with targeting as far as Rush goes. I can have a mob targeted, hit 5 to Rush to them, and my warrior just goes flying off in a totally different direction to a different mob. Occasionally, he’ll just run off in a random direction where there are no mobs at all. This has caused me to plummet to my death three different times in Ascalonian Catacombs during the Adelbern fight. I even make sure my camera is facing the direction in which I want to Rush, and it doesn’t help at all.

So I never know if I’m going to actually run to what I have targeted, or if my warrior is going to suddenly decide that it’s a great time for suicide and hurl himself off a cliff. Suffice to say, I never use the skill near ledges anymore.

Can Humans/other Races operate Golems?

in Lore

Posted by: Egon Vidar.9125

Egon Vidar.9125

I don’t see Charr using golem-like technology in a battle scenario unless they have no other choice, and that might be why they don’t seem to have anything like that. I might be wrong, but Charr seem more inclined to face a foe head on than relying on a machine to do their dirty work for them. And I mean this only so far as mechanical foot soldiers go, obviously they will use larger scale war machinery. But they really don’t seem like the kind of culture that would spare their living soldiers to send in an army of robots, or rely on robotics in any way unless it’s necessary. Their technology is generally much more practical than what is seen with the Asura, who seem fond of doing things just for the sake of doing things. Getting something useful out of it that lessens their workload is a nice bonus.

Humans are probably having too many economic problems to fund research into anything like golemancy on a large scale or produce them on a large scale, and researchers might be too busy studying something like defenses, as humans seem.. particularly fond of that. There were the Watchknights, which actually were very much like human-made golems, but I imagine humans might not be quick to pursue that again with how they were turned against the world by Scarlet. And given the aforementioned economic problems, those weren’t the most practical thing in the first place. Rather than the queen gifting a bunch of buttplate-bots to her people as some sort of hairbrained gift that would obviously go terribly wrong, because humanity isn’t allowed to Have Nice Things, why didn’t she donate the money used to charities for the homeless, the orphanage, things like that, who would put the money to good use?
Sorry, that was a bit of a tangent.

Sylvari? I wouldn’t be even remotely surprised if they made some sort of plant-golems to defend the Grove/the Pale Tree if things get any worse in their homeland. And Sylvari can clearly operate that kind of machinery, given Scarlet, so maybe they could persuade the nearby Asura to lend them some tech.

Norn, save perhaps a few individuals, probably don’t give one whit about golems. They could surely operate them, though, given that “norn engineer” is a player option. Maybe some day a norn’s chosen legend will be to build a better golem than the asura, who knows? Wouldn’t that be a surprise.

Selfless Potion on Asura

Egon Vidar.9125

I know this thread is about asura and I hate to interrupt, but.. I was going to get the Thoughtless tonic on my asura guardian until I saw this thread. I quickly decided, “screw that noise.”

Then I decided I would instead put a Selfless potion on either my sylvari engineer or my sylvari warrior, both male, max height. Then I realized the engineer has the tree branch head and the warrior uses the T3 heavy cultural helm, and.. There could be seriously heinous clipping with both of those, given the problems asura are having and many of male sylvari’s unresolved, gross armour problems.

So can anyone confirm/deny? Maybe I will put Thoughtless on my asura guardian afterall. :[ Better undersized horns than a clipped halo, maybe.. Or maybe I won’t bother to grind heirlooms at all.

Centaur and quaggan?

Imagine an army, quick centaurs with mobile, raged-out quaggans on their backs. The centaurs have speed and reach to a degree, as well as six limbs with which to wreck you; the quaggans are more on-level with human-to-smaller races and have brute strength. The centaurs would be tall enough to deal with norn and other humanoids, the quaggans short enough to deal with shorter-than-norn humanoids, asura, and skritt that manage to get past the centaurs. Not to mention, again, the speed of centaurs and those stomping hooves. Imagine waves of centaurs flooding into a city and dropping their hulk-quaggans, effectively making the army double-sized, since most people in this world don’t use mounts, certainly not mounts capable of strategy and fighting. This would be especially devastating if the city had tried and thought they could bottleneck the entry of the army.

Hilarious as the mental image might be, that is not something with which I would want to screw. Neither has awesome technology or magic, but both centaurs and enraged quaggans are pretty brutal, and the fact of the matter is, magic and technology aren’t the only viable options. Throw them in with the other alliances who do have those things so your massive army is well balanced on all fronts, and you’ve got a serious problem. I think Scarlet’s only issue would be getting quaggans into their dangerous state when she needs them to be, and keeping them there. As well as keeping the quaggans… moist. With LA, that would not have been a problem, with the bay right there.

I don’t like her as a character in the slightest (I’d love to see her blasted to smithereens by her own machinations) and I don’t like how writing is handled around her, but that’s an alliance with some merit. I’d certainly rather deal with the Molten or Toxic alliance than waves of peeved, bloodthirsty, possibly genetically augmented quaggans.

I’m also a bit curious – is Zhaitan’s original model still floating around in the games data files anywhere, or did they yank it out entirely? Hmm. I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that it was in at some point due to it being visible on some old maps.

The model of dead Zhaitan from game IS in data. I Can export and render (and make comparison), but Im afraid i will not find the textures

Oh goodness, it’s actually in there. I have to admit that I’m terribly curious about it. especially its head.. and how gaping its mouth was in the trailer. As well as the differences between it and the current in-game Zhaitan. It doesn’t matter at all to me whether some things have textures or not, honestly. That’s a heck of a find either way, and I’m actually amazed no one has ripped it yet.

You’re doing awesome work and those renders are marvelous. It’s a real huge shame you never get an actual sense of Zhaitan’s immense scale in-game. He is terrifyingly massive and that could have been put to good effect.

Egon Vidar.9125

Zhaitan is very, very huge. I ripped dragon models (with textures) from gw2.dat and animated them in Cinema 4D; that picture of Tequatl’s and Zhaitan’s size on wiki is my render. If you guys want more renders of Zhaitan in comparison with other dragons (or with an airship we are fighting on with Zhaitan), you can tell me.

That model is really beautiful. Its really a pity that we cant see Zhaitan very well in the game. After his death, they could make an instance where we can walk on him or something like that, that would be wonderful

BTW: the model’s wingspan on wiki render is 446 metres. In comparison, model of human from game data is 190cm tall, The Bifrost is 205 cm tall and an asura is 124 cm tall (4 ft.) (from wiki: “an asura is usually about four feet tall”), so it sounds like its a real size.

Comparison images would obviously be great, but I’m wondering..

I’m an illustrator and I’ve been trying to draw Zhaitan for quite a long while, and I’m having problems with some areas of him I just cannot find good reference images of. If you were to post closeup images of his right and left hands, as well as that weird area where his lower jaw should be and how that works, I would be eternally grateful. It’s just not easy to tell how his hands exactly look, and the in-game model has a blinding light coming out of his mouth that obscures everything.

I’m also a bit curious – is Zhaitan’s original model still floating around in the games data files anywhere, or did they yank it out entirely? Hmm. I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that it was in at some point due to it being visible on some old maps.

Another lesbian relationship?

in Lore

Posted by: Egon Vidar.9125

Egon Vidar.9125

The representation of gay relationships in the over all game seems okay/well balanced/appropriately representative, but there’s definitely a huge over representation of homosexual relationships among non-single important/main characters.

We can conclude that since the promotion of such relationships is so common within the game, there must be a purpose. It doesn’t reflect the demographics of reality, so it can’t be to appeal to the player.

Many, sadly, do not seem to consider the fact that there would likely be a great, great deal many more visible non-heterosexual relationships in real life if such relationships weren’t so often shunned and, sometimes, downright dangerous, in many parts of the world.

Tyria does not have that. The real world is not a good comparison.

And as it turned out while I was typing this, someone did the math and there really aren’t that many. I would actually expect more, in a setting like Tyria, but I’m pleased with what there is. I strongly suspect the relationships stand out due to people being used to only seeing heterosexual relationships in media.

I’m glad for these representations, especially in an AAA game.

As for Marjory and Kasmeer being fanservice, I don’t see it. They’re two attractive people in a relationship. There are plenty of attractive people in relationships in this game. Logan’s certainly not hideous, and neither is Faren, and no one’s calling his speedo escapades fanservice, either. I suppose just because they’re both lesbians, and not particularly kitten the eyes? If that’s the case, I’ve not yet seen anyone call Faolain and Caithe fanservice. Maybe because Marjory and Kasmeer are more, uh.. conventionally attractive? By sheer virtue of being human, I suppose. I don’t know. I don’t really get it, no matter how I try to reason it out.
Trust me, heterosexual couples definitely do have the potential to be fanservicey, but no one’s said any of those were pandering to the audience.

If you want to talk about fanservice, have a gander over at some of the female armours that bare enormous swathes of flesh vs. the male counterparts to those specific armors that do not.

Not counting Faren’s aforementioned beachwear. That’s only available to him, unfortunately for my sense of humor. If there are people crying out in anguish about lesbians and how lore-breaking Quaggan backpacks are, I’d love to see what’d happen if that thing saw an armor skin release.

That was October 2012..

I am now living vicariously through my Mesmer for my dressing-up needs by getting him the light aetherblade outfit from the gemstore. The problem with that is that I only need the shirt from it, the rest of it looks like crap. I’m going to have to run ascalon catacombs explorable who knows how many times just to get a pair of pants that look like regular old pants.

So yes, I’m having to drop 800 gems for a decent shirt and farm a dungeon just so my caster doesn’t appear to be wearing a dress with a gigantic skirt. Really gigantic. Both of the above characters are male sylvari so all of these skirts and coats just add insult to injury.

What would be better is new armours/armour skins (NOT ascended) that look slightly more feminine, for those who want that option, rather than going back and “fixing” old armours.

Of course I too think it’s better to keep the current armors as they are because a lot of people may like their current armor set. Only armors that are added as of now should have significant changes between male and female.

Also, out of curiosity, what armor are you talking about? As far as I know, only male versions are used for asura (regardless of gender) there are only a few armors where females have their own version. Though I have never heard of an armor where the male uses the female version.

I mean the reverse. My asura uses the female model, has the female voice, but I consider it male. I rely on on the female model using the male armour.

Though, personally believe it would be both amusing and fantastic if, with any race, females had the choice of wearing male armour, and males had the choice of wearing female. I’d definitely prefer to have the female version of the light orrian mantle on my male sylvari necromancer!

One way to settle this would be to create a range of characters were the only difference is body build. Then take snaps of them wearing the same armors to highlight the difference.

I have four male sylvari and they all have different body types. They all also suffer from various wardrobe malfunctions, all of them have shoulder and skirt problems. The shoulder problem is the least noticeable on my very thin mesmer. Shoulders and skirts are a problem for both my slightly buff warrior (especially shoulders), and my engineer who is thin (especially skirts). My necro has a medium body type and suffers both problems equally. However, more than any of the others, my necro suffers GIANT GLOVE SYNDROME. The toxic gloves make his hands so big it would be funny, if it weren’t so sad. He looks like a mutant.

It’s more than a little off-putting.
