LB is actually almost as good/better than GS in DPS now depending on the number of targets. The buff to Rapid Fire and melee-range Long Range Shot give it enough of an advantage that it’s actually worth using even at melee. Rapid Fire stacks better vuln than Maul too but it’s only going to be single target.

PvE mesmer post patch...

Guanglai Kangyi.4318

Mesmer DPS has always been good, but:

1) Optimized speedclear guilds don’t use them because they’re not necessary when you can do a coordinated might blast > FGS burst to kill most bosses before the mesmer even gets his phantasms up. Note that most pugs are not optimized speedclear guilds and do not do coordinated might blasts > FGS bursts.

2) Because people think mesmers have bad DPS, they don’t build their mesmers for DPS because assuming that’s true, there’s no point in building a class for DPS if it has no DPS. This results in a self-fulfilling prophecy where the players who play mesmer go “mesmer must be bad, my full carrion mesmer with a staff hits for crap compared to my full zerk warrior”.

3) Even putting aside FGS and misconceptions, the mesmer actually does have bad burst. Warriors (used to) be able to open with a super high burst (now it’s the opposite thanks to adrenaline decay) which means that it took a very long time for the mesmer to get ahead in average sustained DPS, by which time the fight would usually be over. Now that sustain is much more important, both engineers and mesmers will be much more important as well due to the fact that they are the kings of sustain.

For those in the know these aren’t concerns anymore (FGS is bad now, as are warriors) but I think most people will still be stuck on the “mesmer is bad DPS” thing from like two years ago.

PvP isn’t much better than PvE, just go play Street Fighter or Call of Duty or whatever if you want real PvP. At least play an MMO like an MMO.

Also bomb might blasting has terrible ramp-up, it takes like 5 seconds to get the initial might blast going plus a few more to get the bleed stacks going. That’s way too slow for clearing trash in open world, it’s purely a dungeon build.

Rampage as One is a really minor DPS boost not worth the elite slot

Still useless in PvE and in PvP it will leave without any defensive utility.

2/6/0/4/2 FT/bombs engie is easily the best solo farming build in the game currently in terms of raw DPS, both sustained and burst. Warriors used to be comparable but with the adrenaline nerf and FT damage buff now it’s not even close.

You are joking right?:-)

Why don’t you go ahead and enlighten me then? The build needs to have:

1) Either permaswiftness or a constant +25% buff.
2) Better DPS than the FT build, including any buffs that don’t take forever to set up (i.e. no might blasting).
3) No significant ramp-up time (1-2 seconds tops, i.e. no prolonged condition-stacking period).
4) Not reliant on elites or any other skill with an excessively long cooldown (10 seconds tops).

A lot of people here seem to be confusing “bad in PvE” with “hard to play in PvE” because I always see “necros are bad in PvE” being responded to with “well i play a necro in pve and i rarely die even in dungeons”.

On topic for OP, I have no idea what it is you like about the necro but you should try the mesmer too. They’re basically what you would expect a stereotypical necromancer-type class to be (lots of CC, minions, debuffs, etc.) and the difference is that they’re actually good in most group content. I can’t really speak for PvP so much but whenever I check the Mesmer boards the worst complaint I see is “omg anet fixed a really minor bug with one skill” which in turn leads me to believe there really isn’t actually much to complain about overall.

Guanglai Kangyi.4318

Also thief is actually the highest single target damage class in game, not 2nd.

pretty sure eles have a higher burst right now.

They dont. http://gw2dps.david-reess.de go compare both in optimal party compositions.

that’s a group scenario, and that’s DPS, which is different from burst. burst is high damage over a short period of time, DPS is sustained damage over time. a fresh air ele can burst for more damage than a thief, but after that, yes, they’ll do less damage.

Ele is both better burst than sustain. Thief doesn’t have “burst” per se since there’s no period where they output massive damage but they do have a period where they output above-average damage for an extended period of time (while they have initiative). After that initiative runs down their sustained DPS drops considerably.

The one thing that is true is that if you look solely at single-target DPS, thief actually is #2 out of the three classes that can accurately be classified as single-target DPS only.

-OP is mad because people are questioning the viability of the GS nerf and takes everything personnaly
-OP says no one cares about pve in a thread he opened about pve

Hmm. Nomad, bro?

Anyway the gs damage greatsword nerf was far from needed and it’s not a big deal in group content since warrior is an offensive buffer class, and eles are here for dpsing ( roughly put), it’s a nerf to solo warriors. Warrior clearing time is already high for their survivability and maybe deserved a nerf, i don’t really care about it, but it’s the first time Anet makes such a change oriented on solo settings. And, as a wise guy said on another topic, all the warriors in TOL were playing hambow with soldier amulet, so best way to fix that is nerf gs damage. And that comes from someone who doesn’t play warrior much in pve compared to the other classes, before you say anything about fanboyism.

Well, the ranger is an “offensive buffer” class with low DPS and it doesn’t really get them much of anywhere since the DPS hit you’re taking with the ranger more than obliterates the support benefit unless you’re in a perfectly minmaxed party.

This change doesn’t hurt warrior THAT much since they can always use Healing Surge pre-fight so they start at full, and the damage loss from HB and WWA isn’t that severe, but a loss is a loss. At any rate you should really be running EA axe or pure DPS axe so the impact won’t really be felt that hard unless you have multiple warriors in the party and your party kills fast enough that you don’t have to worry about dodging or positioning.

Mesmer is really strong in pug PvE and non-speedrun organized groups because they offer a ton of utility and have better single-target DPS than guardians, but current FGS meta means that guardians tend to be preferred for the same roles since they can burst better both in support and damage, albeit they can’t sustain as well.

At the very least wait until they announce what the Septermber changes will be before ruling them out, mesmers get tons of buffs pretty much every patch so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re due for some pretty significant buffs this one too.

For all the whining about “toxicity” I rarely actually see any in-game outside of those stupid poison krait mobs Anet somehow thought was a good idea. Generally it goes like this:

1) A posts “zerk only” LFG.
2) B isn’t a zerk but joins anyway. Either:
3a) A probably suspects B isn’t a zerk but puts up with it so long as he’s willing to put up the pretense.
3b) A asks B to ping gear. B either refuses and leaves or pings the wrong gear and is kicked.
4) Both players move on with their lives.

You only encounter “toxicity” when you’re making it clear you’er not really into the whole “teamwork” thing and even then you sometimes don’t get kicked. I once went into COF with a bearbow ranger, pinged my cleric gear from the start, spammed knockbacks to move mobs out of stacks, and ran around aggroing nearby mobs and pulling them into the party instead of fighting the boss and I STILL didn’t get kicked.

6/4/0/0/4 for all of the above. 6/4/0/4/0 for focus reflects. 2/4/0/4/4 for all around balanced dps/utility build. There is no real need to run any other build apart from those 3 except from some fringe niche encounters.

Sticky thread: How To Mesmer in Dungeons

I’d also recommend 4/6/0/0/4 which will sustain about the same amount of overall DPS as 6/4/0/0/4, give you faster Duelist recharges for phantasm-unfriendly fights, and doesn’t require mantras. The balance is pushed very slightly towards the phantasm side as a tradeoff but it’s not really that bad.

Also, I could care less what you think of me except that you keep bringing your personal “I love necro they’re the best” bias into everything. Regardless I don’t care, you can stew in your own grudge as much as you want.

Back on topic, I would actually put warrior in the higher tier of difficulty for the following reasons. I’ve said this before but it won’t hurt to say it again. Note that this refers to a META build, not “I’m a 1200-range rifle warrior in clerics gear” crap:

1) High health but bad healing means that they don’t take hits well. A warrior may be able to take a larger number of hits initially and regen a fair bit during, but having bad active heals across the board means that once you lose that health pool, you have no way of getting it back up.

2) Warrior lacks ways to reliably negate damage. Guardians have built-in regen (that isn’t lost by healing), lots of defensive boons, and lots of blocks. Engineers and thieves can spam blind, mesmers can spam invul, etc. Warrior doesn’t even get consistent access to vigor by comparison which leaves them with just their regular dodge and a short-duration dodge from WWA, which are good for avoiding obvious boss tells but not so great for powering through unavoidable trash damage.

3) Warrior is actually predisposed to eating MORE damage than other classes because of how heavily backloaded their damage output is. Axe auto deals extra damage on the last hit meaning you generally don’t want to dodge during Triple Chop if you can help it, and Hundred Blades roots you in place for a full four seconds, during which you can’t even strafe. That means that oftentimes you just have to sit and eat the attack rather than interrupt your HB if you think you can take it without dying, which in turn compounds with #1 and #2.

4) Warrior lacks a good “back off and range” option. Nowadays everyone knows that stack-and-melee is where the money’s at, but for newbies (like OP) it helps to have the option to back away a bit if things heat up. Most classes have respectable ranged options that they can use without totally crippling their DPS or breaking the stack too much (i.e. a guardian can switch to scepter and back off a few steps just so he’s not sitting right in the PBAOEs). Warrior is stuck with rifle or longbow, both of which really suck, so most likely you’re going to have to stick with GS/Axe even if it kills you, unless you want your team to chew you out for it.

That’s not to say you can’t roll a warrior in knights gear and spec for tons of regen and carry only defensive utilities, but that’s hardly any more of an accurate representation of how tanky a class is than a full clerics water ele who just afks in melee with a staff.

in Engineer

Posted by: Guanglai Kangyi.4318

FT is the best direct DPS the engie has now but only by a small margin vs. bombs. It’s still a fair bit better because the rapid hits give you more vuln stacking (especially if you throw in Skale Venom and Sigil of Frailty) and it also stacks more might (since you need to spec into Alchemy a bit).

Grenades will still be the general-purpose meta due to massive vuln stacks but I can see FT being legitimately useful in certain compositions, particularly where you’re already oversaturated on bleed.

Will Anet ever make Non-DPS role important?

I want to be able to play the group PvE dungeons without the retaliation of the community for not specing for pure damage.

I would like the option to play more roles than just damage in this game.

No.

Sorry OP but A-Net is a fail of epic proportions on this point.

The original game was designed and marketed as different from other MMOs in that it does not require a “holy tirnity”. Tank, heals, DPS. It was also at same time marketed and designed and stated that while it does not require those elements and content is doable with any group make-up, an optimal group would be DPS, support, control.

DPS, Support and Control were supposed to be the trinity of this game for optimal, but not necessary grouping. However A-Net has completely failed.

They wrote bad scripts for bosses and failed at proper encounter design, thus having no choice but to completely dumb them all down, basically making the control completely useless as the bosses were just flat out immune or durations so significantly lowered that they might as well have been immune.

On top of that they failed providing proper infrastructure. Back in beta for example, some mobs / bosses would not just sit in place in AOEs while being hit, they would kite players, but the servers failed and kept stuttering on the scripts they ran locking them up or causing “mob” lag, etc. So A-Nets solution was to remove all those type of things from the game. They gave up on it entirely and gave bosses mass hit point pools, immunities to Control and next to zero defenses instead.

Very bad programming coupled with poor hardware infrastructure and zero drive to improve on this area of the game by the people in charge is what has led to this situation. I expect absolute zero improvement in this area. A-Net knows all this as a business, and all they do is keep putting in more fluff and milking a cow for all its worth while it will slowly die (open new markets etc.), and then if the people currently in charge stay and don’t leave and actually apply their experience, they will make a new, better product.

So my suggestion to you is, either start on organized WvW / PvP, or leave the game, there are other much better, also F2P ones, albeit they are not as casual as GW2. Sad, and has led a lot of us to stop playing GW2, but true.

The PvP and WvW is even worse designed than the PvE lol. At least the PvE is decently well-paced, dungeons in most MMOs can take as long as an hour on average.

I’m not entirely sure that explains the differential to be honest. I think DEKeyz is assuming some degree of less-than-optimal phantasm uptime, which may or may not be realistic relative to the other classes (other classes may need to dodge, mesmers/phantasms don’t). I remember looking at DnT’s calcualtions and they were generally in line with my own, even accounting for the 5~ seconds of startup to summon the first three phantasms.

I’m trying to remember what DEKeyz had overall mesmer DPS pegged at but they should be #2 sustained and #3 in 30 second bursts, assuming perfect phantasm uptime. I’m guessing any remaining differential is due to factoring in overall DPS contribution such as banners, vuln, etc.

Getting the Engie out of the Explosive line

in Engineer

Posted by: Guanglai Kangyi.4318

Guanglai Kangyi.4318

The problem with engie weapons isn’t the lack of a weapon swap, it’s bad auto-attacks on both pistol and rifle and the fact that the Engineer’s baest trait (Steel-Packed Powder) pretty much only really works with the Grenade Kit.

I sugguested ways to push the engie away from reliance on that specific trait without actually nerfing total vuln but it seems people like the trait, so I guess it’s here to stay as far as the users on this specific board are concerned.

If it’s just about the vuln stacking then just increase the amount of stacks you can apply at one (let’s say 5stacks) and slap a 2sec cooldown on there but I really don’t think it’s about the vuln stacking. It’s about the utility of the grenade kit brought on by the variety of conditions it can apply.

Blind and chill? Always nice but I don’t think anyone is really running grenades in dungeons just for that.

And poison, if you’re into that.

However, it’s mostly about abusing the fact that you throw 2-3 at a time, with each counting as a separate hit.

Each one applies vulnerability. (Steel Packed Powder)
Each one has a 50% chance on crit to apply vulnerability (Precise Sights)
Each one has a 15% chance on hit to apply bleed. (Shrapnel)
Each one has a 33% chance on crit to apply bleed. (Sharpshooter)

And that’s not even taking sigils into account. Sure, bombs can do this too, but only at 1 chance per second. Grenades really take advantage of these traits better.

That’s exactly what I said before. Grenades are too good because of the ridiculous multiplicative effect they have on pretty much every trait that depends on attack rate.

The problem with engie weapons isn’t the lack of a weapon swap, it’s bad auto-attacks on both pistol and rifle and the fact that the Engineer’s baest trait (Steel-Packed Powder) pretty much only really works with the Grenade Kit.

You could use the solution I suggested for SPP for all of these. But I didn’t know you guys were talking PvE anyway. It’s harder in PvE because it’s all about numbers. What does the fastest damage with the least amount of rotations and doesn’t get you nuked instantly.

I don’t believe there is a scenario where nerfing grenades will cause “the best DPS spec” to stop being a thing. People would just move on to the next one. Best option is to create a good alternative. Which is what Anet should do.

You can make one weapon the best DPS and another best utility, etc. It’s like how staff ele is the best DPS but LH ele is best for support and burst.

That’s what I was suggesting in the other thread, I wanted to make FT the best support (best might and vuln stacking) and bombs the best raw DPS (but bad vuln stacking), with grenades coming up somewhere in the middle It may have been a bit confusing because I was also calling for overall nerfs because engineer DPS is way too high atm especially considering all the other stuff they can do concurrently with DPS.

It does for a Mesmer… Your desire to have an UBER-weapon for every class is irrelevant to what weapons are generally considered the most useful ones you CAN use. Mesmer’s should in no way be a melee powerhouse class….despite what you might “like”.

Well, again, assuming that PvE=dungeons, Mesmer is at a clear disadvantage for not being a melee power house simply because the way dungeons are designed makes melee several times better than almost every ranged weapon in terms of damage.

Fire staff ele is a big exception though.

Stop trying to range with mesmer then.

Stick in a composition with a ranger, EA warrior, guardian and then like phalanx warrior and engi to handle might/vuln. Then swap the EA warrior for a 30/25 warrior and the guardian for like a thief or something. Then take a look at the numbers for those two classes compared to ranger.

Interestingly, while the ranger’s personal dps isn’t anything special, when you look at the total party dps it looks like rangers bring enough to make them competitive with thieves and eles. …and easily surpass warriors by 2~3k (that is, warriors other than the 1 PS for 25might)

of the available builds there, mesmer, necro and gaurd appear to bring poor damage.

war, engy and ranger table boosting overall party dps as their claim to fame – and thus, if you’re trying to optimize, you don’t want more than one of each.
(their value appears to be, in order: PS war, vuln engy, spirit/spot ranger)
(other note: a 2nd ranger is noticably worse than a 2nd engy or war)

thief and ele for high personal dps.

while gaurdians bring so much defensive utility that having relatively weak damage doesn’t matter that much, for mesmer and necro, this is very much grounds to exclude them from a party… in the same way you might exclude someone for wearing soldier’s instead of beserkers.

at least, that’s what i observe.

I’m not sure how that paricular tool calculates DPS. It sounds like it’s doing weird things with might and fury if it’s putting PS warrior at top party support contribution. It’s not a super easy thing to calculate the total amount of buffs since might stacking is cumulative (i.e. thief + any other profession’s fire field > those two separately) and vuln can either be measured in bursts (FGS, stuff like OMM) or sustained over time.

I also know the mesmer estimates tend to be lowball since they don’t include phantasm DPS so that may make them look worse than they actually are. I also don’t think that particular calculator accounts for use of Time Warp.

All that having been said, if and when FGS ever gets nerfed, being able to sustain long-duration might/vuln/fury/etc. over time (and not just for 30 seconds or whatever the time window used in that caclulator is) is going to be more important than just asking how you’re going to get the boss tot he wall to be Fiery Rushed.

That calc also doesn’t seem to take into account pet vulnerability

It does take into account pet vuln. It also takes into account mesmer phantasms. Instead of assuming things, perhaps asking a question is something you both should do.

In that case, maybe let me know how you’re calculating mesmer DPS. I’d genuinely like to know since if I remember correctly you’re using DnT numbers, and last I checked DnT numbers for mesmer the conclusion was basically “mesmer sustained DPS is really good but the burst is terrible compared to FGS”. I don’t debate that in the slightest but I’m assuming your calculator doesn’t take FGS into account or 5 eles would be the best comp by about 100000%.

I figured you were either intentionally taking it with fewer than max phantasms (to account for the “phantasms die really fast” complaint), not accounting for Time Warp contribution (which is admittedly hard), using a time period so short that the five-second ramp-up time significantly hurts the average DPS, or all three.

Will Anet ever make Non-DPS role important?

Being the “last man standing” on your non-DPS spec is nothing to brag about, it means you made a spec to do something other than DPS (i.e. tank, heal, CC, etc.) and FAILED because your party is now dead.

“My healer build was so amazing my entire party wiped” is basically what I see people saying whenenver they say “last man standing”.

we’re talking pugs, some of whom might be new to the game and I wouldnt consider it a failure if it didnt wipe.

what processing logic are you using to translate this “last man standing” to this “My healer build was so amazing my entire party wiped”

last man standing doesnt imply healer and if they’re standing it implies there is no wipe!

1) Not DPS = you were healer or tank or some other similar support role.
2) Last man standing = everyone else is dead.
3) Everyone else is dead = healer/tank/support didn’t do his job properly.

in a trinity setup yes sure… but in gw2 everyone is dps, tank and healer at the same time (or damage, control , support to use the official terminology).

Perhaps the last man standing is the last man standing cause s/he didnt neglect their control, support part while the other did. Support and control help in Gw2 but they’re not going to keep everyone alive.

Your statement isn’t necessary true in a trinity setup either. A healers job is first and foremost to keep himself/herself alive before his/her teammates. A dead DPS is bad but survivable generally speaking a dead healer means game over.

The point of a dedicated support/healer/tank is to keep OTHER people alive while they do other things. If your dedicated support/healing/tanking didn’t keep them alive, it was utterly pointless. The fact that it kept YOU alive is totally irrelevant because you’re not DPSing anyway.

So basically what that boils down to is that whatever role you picked for yourself was pointless and useless, and you’re bragging about how pointless and useless it was for everything except keeping you alive long enough to continue being pointless and useless longer than the rest of your party.

You’re literally negative DPS because you not dying along with everyone else is just keeping them from ressing and retrying sooner.

Necro or Engine help

Engineer isn’t bad in PvE, they just aren’t amazing atm due to conjures making boss fights insanely fast; no need to stack vuln when the boss dies in 20 seconds. They aren’t awful though, Necromancer is the only PvE profession that is completely worthless as far as optimizing goes.

So Engi will be your best bet, its highly unlikely they will fix Necro in PvE anytime soon.

If it’s gonna take 20 seconds you probably do want an engie as FGS vuln lasts like 2 seconds.

Are mesmers underpowered in PVE?

People are likely kicking you because you’re level 40, not because you’re a mesmer. Mesmer is good.

Mesmer isn’t an intuitive class at first and their strengths aren’t readily apparent, but they are there and once you master them they become borderline overpowered. The most important thing is not to think of your clones as tanks, they almost never pull aggro and they have no health anyway. Rather, it’s phantasms specifically that are extremely powerful, and if you use your weapon swap to get 3 up and running your DPS goes through the roof. Basically no other class with the exception of elementalist can compete. Think of them as extremely high-DPS single-target turrets rather than as minions or pets, if it helps. Even clones can be thought of as bleed-inflicting turrets once you get the master-level trait in the Dueling line.

For high-level endgame dungeon running, the “mesmer hate” primarily comes from two camps:

1) “I have no idea how to play mesmer but I heard they were bad DPS so I’m just going to go with that.”
2) “My minmaxed group of hardcore dungeon runners has a perfectly choreographed routine for every dungeon so we can burst everything down without needing the mesmer’s support buffs or sustained DPS.”

Things don’t always go that well even for group #2 though. Mesmers are like guardians insofar as they make things go much more smoothly, albeit they are more balanced betwen offense and defense than the guardian, which is pretty much pure defensive.
