Getting the Engie out of the Explosive line

The problem with engie weapons isn’t the lack of a weapon swap, it’s bad auto-attacks on both pistol and rifle and the fact that the Engineer’s baest trait (Steel-Packed Powder) pretty much only really works with the Grenade Kit.

I sugguested ways to push the engie away from reliance on that specific trait without actually nerfing total vuln but it seems people like the trait, so I guess it’s here to stay as far as the users on this specific board are concerned.

If it’s just about the vuln stacking then just increase the amount of stacks you can apply at one (let’s say 5stacks) and slap a 2sec cooldown on there but I really don’t think it’s about the vuln stacking. It’s about the utility of the grenade kit brought on by the variety of conditions it can apply.

Blind and chill? Always nice but I don’t think anyone is really running grenades in dungeons just for that.

Engineer vs Ranger

The Ranger does comparatively poorly for support in a pug since their primary buffs (fury, Spotter, Frost Spirit) are all percentage-based boons that depends on their party having a certain level of DPS already. With the buff to DPS they’re getting next patch they’ll be viable again in minmaxed parties but they’lls till be crap for pugs because you’re simply taking way too much of a DPS hit in exchange for that support, which will have relatively little impact on already-weak pugs.

Engineers on the other hand are also reliant on a percentage-based buff (Vulnerability) but they at least have very good solo DPS of their own and they can stack a good amount of might, which benefits low-DPS pugs way more (power still benefits PVT bads with no precision or ferocity, and has an even bigger impact on pugs in non-power stat gear like Knight or Celestial).

Engineer also CCs and stealths really well so they’re a lifesaver for stuff like Arah too.

o.O

The 1H sword is arguably one of the best weapons for the mesmer…. to each their own I suppose…

Proof one should take all advice on these forums with a grain of salt….what you said is 180 of the actual truth….Sword is hands down the best MH weapon a Mesmer has.

Just because its the best weapon the Mesmer has, doesn’t make it good. I use Sword myself, because im forced to. Its the best weapon a Mesmer has, but its by no means good, or effective. The #1 is too slow for my liking, the #2 is…ok…at a stretch, the Blur is nice I guess, and #3 is buggy. When im playing Mesmer, I normally just have the sword for looks. Offhand Sword is nice though. I like the Swordsman. I know plenty of people like the Mainhand Sword, but its not for me. Ill be waiting until the Mesmer gets a better power-oriented weapon.

It is a good weapon. The auto alone stacks 2 vuln and removes a boon with each chain and comes with an extremely long invul attack on a short cooldown. It also has a stun breaker built in and is 1H so you can pair it with any offhand phantasm you want.

The only thing it lacks is aggregate damage but that’s just because mesmer DPS is balanced around the idea of having phantasms as well. If you gave the mesmer’s sword the DPS output of a warrior they’d be through the roof for total DPS with phantasms.

If you think you can go into a real MMO, where your intentionally being useless will actively cause the team to fail and wipe and be forced to restart the dungeon from scratch, and not end up on the personal kitten list of everyone on the server, you’ve got another thing coming.

Go on and try it though. I’d love to hear how it goes.

I like the idea of what you’re doing, I just don’t like taking away the one thing we can do better than anyone else. If it’s not okay for us to have 25 vuln stacking like a boss, then take away the banner buffs from Warriors, might stacking from eles, etc. Every profession ideally should have something they bring to the table that they’re the best at.

I do like differentiating the roles of the DPS kits a little more like you have, but not at the cost of the only reason that “min maxers” would consider an Engi in their group. I don’t find myself in those kinds of groups, mind you, but I don’t like the idea of playing a profession that the general consensus is “you play it if you like it, otherwise it’s useless”.

To achieve the same results as you are aiming for I would reduce the damage effectiveness of the Grenade Kit. Make it a condition spamming/debuffing kit without also being great for damage espeically since you can be at range and have little to no risk. I’m thinking 10-15% behind Bombs in this order:

1. FT most damage, least utility. You not only have to be melee, but you have to aim it.
2. Bombs 10-15% behind FT but obviously more utility in the conditions and support it could bring. Also in melee, but no need to aim.
3. Grenades 10-15% behind Bombs. The best utility, vuln stacking, condition spam, safest kit. For those advantages, it pays by dealing less damage.

Shrapnel could change, roll it up into Steel Packed Powder to make explosions bleed and give vuln. Open up an Adept trait for something to help achieve this new ranking of kits.

6 seconds on Precise Sights would enable FT to stack about 12 vuln base. That’s already a ton. It could definitely be more but I think 12 vuln from an adept trait is already plenty OP. With Veggie Pizza that’s already 17 stacks plus FT is basically already infinite might stacks with Flame Blast being a blast finisher now.

Also don’t forget that engineers can also get high vuln bursts via Jump Shot and a Sigil of Frailty can add an easy 5 stacks since both FT and Grenades are pretty much guaranteed to proc it on cooldown. They also get strong benefit from stuff like Skale Venom so I don’t think engies are really in any danger of losing their place as the vuln stacking kings even if their aggregate stacking ability goes down slightly.

Anyone who thinks DPS is the only important thing needs to ask why guardian and thief aren’t down at the bottom of the barrel along with necromancers.

For dungeon runs, thief produces some of the highest dps, right? Guardian is in the top half of professions in dps too, aren’t they? Plus they produce a massive amount of group support while doing it…

They produce a massive amount of group DEFENSIVE support. Which according to people here is useless because DPS is apparently the only thing that matters.

Hopefully nobody thinks it is the only thing that matters. That is easily disproven merely by pointing out the necessity of dodging. But DPS is by far the most important thing, at least for dungeon runs. Even the professions brought for support run full DPS gear and even traits for the most part. And much of the support is to boost group DPS. Or for skipping. ;-)

Apparently they really hate the idea of doing damage while supporting, or something. Tbh I don’t really get it either, the only explanation I can think of is that they’re lazy and want to spec full defense and have an excuse for it.

Nerf Shrapnel and Steel-Packed Powder

On the face of it this looks pretty silly, but GK I know you have a good grasp on the Engi and I would be interested in hearing what you are replacing these traits with before I form an opinion. Losing our vuln stacking is a pretty big blow. I don’t buy the “profession that is least popular in PvE” thing, but removing something we are unequivocally the best at doesn’t seem wise.

I like your end goal of balancing the kits more, but I don’t know why you’re happy to simply nerf GK and introduce a new heirarchy. I feel what you should be trying to do with this proposed change is make Bombs best at something, FT best at something (stacking might doesn’t count if it doesn’t even mean more damage overall) and Grenades best at something.

The problem with Shrapnel and Steel-Packed Powder right now is that they give massive amounts of bleed and vuln stacking but only when used with grenades. That means that the engineer niche is currently vuln and something like 75% of it comes from a single trait that really only affects one weapon only.

The change I am proposing is to buff Precise Sights, which works with everything to have an overall vuln duration high enough to comfortably sustain about 12 vuln stacks with a flamethrower without any extra condition duration, which I think is quite reasonable (you could tweak the duration if you think 12 stacks really isn’t enough, i.e. 8s vuln would get you 15 stacks). Similarly, Sharpshooter would go up to about 8 stacks of bleed sustained on the FT which would buff the damage enough to make it competitive.

By comparison, grenade damage would go down slightly and the vuln stacking would drop to a much more reasonable 9 or so stacks. It would still deal more overall damage than the FT and of course it would do so at range, so there’s still incentive to use it. It would also drop the grenade’s max potential damage below the bomb’s, which is again reasonable, so now bombs, which have a crap attack rate and thus bad vuln stacking. It would, as a side bonus, help prevent engie DPS from getting out of control with all the buffs they’re getting lately; right now max DPS with a perfect rotation is approaching staff ele levels.

So that leaves us with the following roles for the following weapons:

Grenades: Balanced vuln stacking and damage output (previously: best at everything)
FT: Strongest vuln stacking, lowest DPS by a small margin (previously: worst at everything)
Bombs: Strongest raw DPS, bad vuln stacking (previously: okay but no reason to use over grenades)

So basically you want to nerf the grenade and buff the bomb right?
Too bad that logic is flawed because they already serve different purpose, and having the same dps on each other will make grenade unviable.

Bomb kit has a stronger and more versitile option of condition, with long lasting AOE burning,, smoke field, fire field, KB, Confusion, and blast finisher. However grenade rely most of its condition dps from traits because it is not a very good condition kit without the trait. Also the range issue is a non issue because grenade is much harder to aim at further distance, and even if it does land, not all 3 will land if the target is consitently moving.

The trait makes condition grenade has its niche to be a viable condition weapon, or serve as a vulnerable stacking weapon, so why try to break it? If you want other kit to have some love, then BUFF other kit instead of nerfing grenade kit even more!

Because that vuln is the most important thing, there’s literally no reason to take bombs for the same DPS if it means losing 20~ stacks of vuln.

“My healer build was so amazing my entire party wiped” is basically what I see people saying whenenver they say “last man standing”.

Stick in a composition with a ranger, EA warrior, guardian and then like phalanx warrior and engi to handle might/vuln. Then swap the EA warrior for a 30/25 warrior and the guardian for like a thief or something. Then take a look at the numbers for those two classes compared to ranger.

Interestingly, while the ranger’s personal dps isn’t anything special, when you look at the total party dps it looks like rangers bring enough to make them competitive with thieves and eles. …and easily surpass warriors by 2~3k (that is, warriors other than the 1 PS for 25might)

of the available builds there, mesmer, necro and gaurd appear to bring poor damage.

war, engy and ranger table boosting overall party dps as their claim to fame – and thus, if you’re trying to optimize, you don’t want more than one of each.
(their value appears to be, in order: PS war, vuln engy, spirit/spot ranger)
(other note: a 2nd ranger is noticably worse than a 2nd engy or war)

thief and ele for high personal dps.

while gaurdians bring so much defensive utility that having relatively weak damage doesn’t matter that much, for mesmer and necro, this is very much grounds to exclude them from a party… in the same way you might exclude someone for wearing soldier’s instead of beserkers.

at least, that’s what i observe.

I’m not sure how that paricular tool calculates DPS. It sounds like it’s doing weird things with might and fury if it’s putting PS warrior at top party support contribution. It’s not a super easy thing to calculate the total amount of buffs since might stacking is cumulative (i.e. thief + any other profession’s fire field > those two separately) and vuln can either be measured in bursts (FGS, stuff like OMM) or sustained over time.

I also know the mesmer estimates tend to be lowball since they don’t include phantasm DPS so that may make them look worse than they actually are. I also don’t think that particular calculator accounts for use of Time Warp.

All that having been said, if and when FGS ever gets nerfed, being able to sustain long-duration might/vuln/fury/etc. over time (and not just for 30 seconds or whatever the time window used in that caclulator is) is going to be more important than just asking how you’re going to get the boss tot he wall to be Fiery Rushed.

Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

The game should be balanced according to PvP! Not PvE! Well ideally the game should split up abilities for each game mode like GW1 but it doesn’t so poo! In PvE, anything and everything can be used and you can still achieve success! In PvP, using suboptimal builds will usually end in a loss! Of course when you talk about speed clearing PvE then generally there is one build that is always better than the others! In the Engineer’s case it is Grenades just like Warriors use greatswords and axes over maces and shields! Nerfing Shrapnel and Steel Packed Powder just hurts one of the few viable builds Engineers have in PvP!

Wahoo! Bye frands!

I could flip that around and say that the game should be balanced about PvE because it’s an MMO and furthermore the PvP in GW2 is crap to begin with. Regardless PvE is where my expertise is so that’s what I’m going to talk about here.

Ultimately in PvE it comes down to:

1) Engineers deal way too much damage in aggreagte.
2) Engineers stack way more vuln than they have any business doing.

And the issue is because they’re stacking on average 5 stacks of vuln with every toss of their ranged kit. Right now engineer is pretty much the only class in the game who can get effectively maxed support contribution, range, and DPS in one weapon, which completely kills every other weapon out there. Even the omg so op warriors everyone complains about have to choose between group buffing (EA, Phalanx) and raw personal DPS.

Whether you like grenades or not is completely irrelevant. I like them too but I am trying to figure out ways to make other weapons viable. I would have done the same thing for Tool Kit and rifle primary but i couldn’t think of ways to make them viable without significant and potentially overpowered overhauls.

I’d say any time wasted by a PVT is well made up by the fact that you don’t have to put in any effort whatsoever to survive anything. I think all the videos of a full cleric water ele facetanking dungeon bosses solo with just auto-attack healing are sufficient proof of that.

If you can join dungeon groups and get loads of free rewards for literally afking and occasionally tabbing over to move your character every few minutes, I’d say it’s worth the tradeoff of being caught doing it once in a while and kicked.

Its also possible that engi will do way less because a significant portion is condi damage. :>

And it’s also possible that you underestimate the opening burst of Rifle 3+5+acid bomb+grenade barrage.

Engineer dps starts off with a rather huge burst, lowers when you swap to grenade kit, ramps back up and by the time you use the shrapenal grenade a second time you are at your sustained dps rate and almost ready to do your burst skills again.

I kinda want to do trend line graph where the x axis is time and the y axis is average dps at that time. Plot points for 5-10-20-30 seconds and watch how the DPS flows as a fight goes on. But this is a time consuming project that isn’t worth doing until/if FGS gets nerfed.

The same can be said for most classes.

Engi just happens to be really high up there in burst cause they have like ten different long-cooldown burst damage skills.

That’s not the problem at all. It’s when some of play how I tell you crowd act out, harrassing and kicking people. I don’t see play how you want people insulting players for wrong builds, etc…accusing them being selfish and wasting people’s time … or kicking people from teams.

No, instead you see them asking for berserker gear to be nerfed, removed, and a serving of angry condescension, with phrases like “monkey rolling”, “zerkids”, “exploiters”, “stack and press random keys” and the obligatory “elitist” when someone says something they disagree with, because you just can’t have arguments without ad hominems being thrown around on this forum.

Both sides are in the wrong, but don’t pretend that the “play how you want” crowd is in the clear here, because they’re absolutely not.

Also I bet we could get a mod to make a “Dungeon Whining Superthread” sticky and just move all the duplicate posts there.

It’s a 10% boost to one skill in the auto which results in less than a 4% boost overall. It’s better than nothing but it hardly solves the ranger problem even coupled with a 10% boost from the Marksmanship grandmaster.

On the plus side, LB is slightly less bad now even at melee range, the Rapid Fire buff helps it out a lot. Still not as good as sword though.

It’s pretty easy for an engie to lose 500 DPS due to botched rotations, dodging, having to heal, etc. It’s also possible that the engie will do way more than the warrior because the warrior can’t survive being rooted for HB, can’t get WWA spaced right, etc.

What is ridiculous about them from a PvE perspective? As I see it, the flame thrower will have more PvE viability with its auto attack. The same goes for the tool kit. how do any of these changes hurt engineers in PvE?

I don’t think I ever said they were nerfs.

A 6/6/0/0/2 engie with Fireforged Trigger gets a blast finisher on a 5 second cooldown, meaning he can either go Nades/Bombs/FT to get a fire field on 10s cd for super fast might blasting. Alternately, he can go Nades/FT/E-Gun for massive DPS (almost ele tier with perfect rotation) and not even have to give up any might or vuln stacking.

Meanwhile ranger changes don’t help them even a tiny bit in PvE. We’ll have to see what changes the other classes get but I wager they’ll be buffing the already-OP professions and doing nothing for the crappy ones, just because that’s how PvP breaks down.

Grenades actually are .85 per toss, I originally thought it was 1s per toss too but after I noticed that on the wiki and I went and tested myself and it is in fact slightly faster than that. If you have the patience to go out and throw 85 grenades it’ll take you exactly 100 seconds.

I don’t see how that is the case. Remember when we were comparing bomb kit DPS and grenade DPS? I tested it myself a couple months back throwing grenades literally right on top of my engineer. After a full minute I had thrown exactly 60 volleys. In the same time span I dropped 65 bombs.

You even tested it yourself after I said this and agreed with me. Has the animation changed in some way recently?

I think it did. To be honest I’m a little bit confused about it now myself, I tested it recently and it was definitely .85 per and now it seems to be back to 1 per. I suspect it may be an issue with latency or inconsistent queueing because I’m actually not getting 1s per consistently either, sometimes it seems to be slightly faster and sometimes slightly slower.

At any rate grenades being back to 1s per actually doesn’t affect overall DPS that much, surprisingly.

[Skill Bar] Engi balance changes (7/25)

These engie buffs are all sort of ridiculous from a PvE perspective.

Anet really needs to start considering the ridiculous impact some of these changes will have on class balance in modes outside of sPvP. I realize that PvP balance is “more important” because no one likes being bodied by an overpowered profession, but I don’t think anyone really likes being kicked from a party in favor of an overpowered profession in PvE either. And given that it’s an MMO and not a MOBA or whatever I think PvE deserves at least equal balancing attention since I’d really be surprised if people who only PvP were any sort of substantial subset of the game population.

I popped that into the spreadsheet and it actually comes out pretty favorable for FT. You lose the massive vuln stack (you only get about 5ish with Precise Sights) but gain extra might and the base DPS is actually pretty close to bombs and grenades (better than bombs overall, better than grenades if you don’t count bleed). If your party isn’t capped on either, FT probably actually deals better damage in a pug.

I’m not really sure how FT is better than bombs in your calculation.

With the new dmg increase Flame Jet would have a power coefficient of 1,995 spread over 2.57 seconds, Flame Blast has a combined coefficient of 2.5 (assuming you hit all targets with the ball before exploding it) with a cast time of approximately 0.5 sec (just ignoring the travel time for now) and a cooldown of 4.8 seconds with Fireforged trigger.

So we have a combined power coefficient of 6.49 over 5.64 seconds or 1.15 per second (1 Blast after every second Jet). With the 10% bonus damage to burning targets this is increased to 1.265 per second

Bomb has a power coefficient of 1.25 over 0.92 seconds or 1.36 per second.

If we add Explosive Powder and Deadly Mixture to the calculation it results in 1.45five (thank you kitten filter) for FT and 1.496 for the Bomb. Pretty close to Bomb but you have to give up 100 precision or power for it.

Also, Bomb hits up to 5 targets while Jet only 3, within a comparable area (assuming a 120° cone for Jet) and FT is not able to keep up permanent burning on multiple targets by itself.

In my opinion this change is a good buff for FT that will make it useful, especially for fights where you don’t want to get too close, but Bomb Kit will remain the best kit for pure direct damage and Grenade Kit the best for vulnerability and bleed stacking along with strong direct damage.

It’s because more damage comes from the Flame Blast rather than the primary, as opposed to bombs which are 100% from the primary, meaning that you get a bigger damage advantage when doing a rifle burst or using utilities.

I could see a FT engi keeping up some decent might, particularly if they switch in bomb kit for the additional fire field, but I’m not sure if they’ll be any better at it than an ele who can already stack tons of might while bringing top tier DPS.

Flame Blast being a blast finisher means the Engie can now take Flamethrower in lieu of Bomb Kit without losing any might stacking, which in turn pushes their DPS up lot because now they can spam Flame Blast too.

PvE solo - Y do ppl say warrior is ez/strong?

The two highest solo DPS classes are warrior and engineer. Warrior is easier to manage in general because he doesn’t require as much skill flipping to keep stuff up, he can just trait Forceful Greatsword and take signets to pump stats. Engie will reach higher peak DPS but it takes a bit more work.

Engie 2nd highest DPS?

3) The engineer’s sustained vuln stacking is amazing but most bosses can be bursted down quickly with FGS before it becomes an issue and most people can deal with losing 10-15% DPS against the ones that can’t.

That said I don’t think anyone seriously disputes that engie is extremely strong, a lot of the “engie is bad for speedruns” thing is more of a “an ele would still be 1-2% more overall DPS here” thing. In any comp that’s not being strictly minmaxed to perfection the engie will be a significant buff due to high competitive DPS and massive vuln stacking.

Can you explain this to me? These two statements seem like they contradict each other.

Why would a “strictly minmaxing” dungeon group be okay with 10-15% less damage because they don’t have an Engineer against certain bosses, but not want to take one in the first place at the risk of a 1-2% DPS loss?

It’s primarily a strict numbers game. For example, a lot of the bosses in Arah have a fair bit of health and take a while to burn through. Engie COULD burn through them slightly faster thanks to having more vuln but having an extra ele makes the run through much more flexible as to the ones that can be Fiery Rushed in exchange for taking slightly longer on the maybe one or two bosses that can’t and the trash mobs that will die in 5 seconds anyway.

dagger mainhand.

and for PVE content dagger+pistol for Black Powder

Should probably reopen the thread because dagger isn’t best single target DPS. A D/D rotation with Cloak and Dagger > Backstab is, but dagger by itself, not. Sword deals more if you just look at the skills on the main hand weapon.

That’s very interesting my dear Guang, so you called me a bad theorycrafter without even knowing if I have numbers to provide? Sounds like someone has been talking too fast

It turns out theorycrafting is not all about computing DPS. What a surprise heh? I don’t doubt you have certainly become better at maths since the last time I took your own spreadsheet to correct its myriad of mistakes, but this is not what I was talking about. I was saying that despite their damaging potential, engineers are not good for speedclears.

Anyway, maybe you would like to explain to us why you say engi is 2nd best DPS while DnT says it is 3rd? Their numbers look quite different from yours … who could be wrong? I wonder

Because they are using thief burst DPS over a 30-second period which pushes it slightly higher than the average sustained on account of how initiative works. Thieves can burst a fair bit of damage due to having a frontloaded initiative pool + multiple long-CD initiative-recharging skills but once you average out over the entire period it gets considerably worse.

Also last I checked this thread was about DPS, maybe I was wrong.

Go take it up with the theorycrafters at DnT and tell them why they’re wrong while you’re at it. Because our numbers line up just fine and you’re apparently the only one who’s getting differing results.

If you’re really getting results at all and aren’t just talking out your kitten .
