That being said, you still need someone to do the damage and atm Eles/Necros are at the top in this.

Confirmed for never having played a heavy. Take a look at your damage log some time, melee attacks will make up the vast bulk of the damage you take even if we for the sake of your argument discount paintrains.

Some griping about support guardian

in Guardian

Jamais vu.5284

It always makes me laugh when PvEers talk about supposed weaknesses of classes.
You don’t heal with your regen as guard, but with Empower + heal on dodge trait. Those are your two bread and butter heals and they benefit greatly from a full clerics set.
That support is worthless in PvE isn’t an inherent flaw of the class but of PvE gameplay design. If you want support and teamplay, you need to WvW/tPvP.

If you heal someone for 1k health they will still die on the next hit,

Yes, on the next hit. You gave them a chance to react. This is a game where PvE monsters hit with a few big hitters, not a million needle stings like in other MMO.

Also prot and aegis.

And if you build for other stats, then what’s the point of playing the Guardian in the first place?

What a dumb statement. Are you saying the most important thing about class choice are stats?

I remain (strongly) opposed to the ability to change their stats. It wasn’t necessary for Exotics and if access improves it won’t be necessary for Ascended.

If Ascended are supposed to occupy your time between a full exotic load-out and getting a Legendary, then amassing one set and being done forever puts them way, way, WAY closer to the Exotic side of that sequence of play. If we add some means to purchase them

PSA: It should be known that no one else reading in this thread agrees with the hardcore pro-grind mentality of Nike.

filling out your Ascended tier once-&-only-once could easily end up taking less time than amassing 2-3 sets of exotics does…

You can buy 2-3 exotic sets for 20-30 gold.

WvW Season One Rewards Are Unacceptable

Jamais vu.5284

Sure a WvW backpiece skin would have made a difference I guess…

Stop there.

No. What a trifle to make a whole thread about, to accuse the developers of not caring, to have some people (in not a few cases) rage quit over.

An exotic backpiece skin is merely a novelty, same as the Mini Dolyak is a novelty. Backpieces themselves are a dime a dozen. Let’s say you wanted a backpiece skin in particular, or some other sort of skin, and that wasn’t what you got. Well, the only specific reward I ever heard mentioned was the Mini, so I wasn’t disappointed when I got that and some other loot. It’s really a matter of personal preference. I like the monetary rewards because it means I can afford to gear up different characters with different armor sets so that I can try out different builds.

But you didn’t get what you wanted, so you stamped your feet and raged and poisoned your thoughts with PvE envy. If you look at the work that’s been done on WvW, however, you should realize that the team is actually starting to deliver things that the community needs. Not little shinies that would satisfy a PvE player, but real content. There was a long period of stagnation when the game came out, but now they’re listening. Listening with respect to things that actually matter, like commander tools and map design. They’ve introduced a whole new reward system to WvW, and just tested another one out. They’ve kept the combat interesting by continuing to balance the classes, introducing new armors and upgrade components. I’ve personally gained a lot of confidence in the way WvW is being handled now.

Like King Amadeus pointed out, and as I tried to point out, there’s a balance to be struck with rewards, and failing to maintain that has the potential (as we’ve already witnessed temporarily) to change the landscape of WvW for the worse. The last thing I want WvW to be is just another map where the zerg can farm mats and grind for skins.

We still have our own currency, and our own experience system, so new unique skins are always an option. I’ve heard new WvW skins requested in the past, so I don’t think this thread brings anything new to the table. But I am much happier that they allocate game development resources rather than artwork resources to WvW, as they are doing now.

That development and evolution is what I look forward to in this game, not some pittance like a backpiece skin.

Dude are you well? You argue as if Rigtheous and the others are suggesting some great revolutionary upheaveals to happen to WvW.
Can you reset your viewpoint for a second, please? We just wanted some better rewards than the greens/yellows and 100 dragonite + some trash we got for one greatly advertised chest many of us actively grinded for due to limited time available.
Now do you feel silly for your long angry post?

You seem to have misunderstood my point. WvW shouldn’t be work. It should be fun. Not work – fun.

No, you misunderstood the point I was making. You’re clearly below my level of conversational depth. Goodbye.

Jamais vu.5284

As evident in this thread, people ‘grinded’ or ‘worked’ for this loot-chest. They didn’t find it fun. They spend their valuable time completing mundane tasks in order to satisfy their need for virtual colors. How exactly is that spending their time in a valuable manner?

It would have been time spent in a valuable manner if the reward was right. It’s the basic principle behind the thing called work — which not only applies to life sustenance but to any kind of non-instantly gratifying venture you can pursue in life.
How hard to understand is that?

Look I get it. I get wanting to pimp out your character. To want to look good. But I just can’t get myself to waste my time being mad, bored, frustrated and alike, to eventually end up with pixels on a screen which hold no real value or meaning. My life is way too short for that, I’d much rather be happy as much as possible.

Is that your rhetoric when you with defeatism give up on acquiring that legendary? Or an ascended piece? Or even a cultural armor? Because you’d have to do “meaningless tasks” to get them?

@Righteous
Some great suggestions right there. How badas would it have been if we got one token in the chest that we could redeem for one armor piece of an WvW exclusive set. Showing off a whole set would be one of the leetest things you could achieve WvW-side a few years down the line.

And unless you can prove otherwise, you can’t say that Jornophelanthas is not in the majority either.

Should we continue this or do you realize how meaningless your addition was?

This is just inane. I personally don’t have time to “create fanwork and fanart”, or any of those other things that you claim true fans of content do. I spend my time in game enjoying content, not being fanatical about it. I can also say that those in my guild are the same. We enjoy the LS but are not doing any of those things that you claim devout fans do. I think that is only reserved for over the top fans and fanatics, not people who simply enjoy what the LS brings.

You have to be purposefully dense that you took my statement as meaning that every single fan of the character/content would create fanworks. But out of a playerbase of 3.5 million, I expect at least some dedication to the LS in the manner of WoW or even GW1, if it were truly liked that is.
Please tell me you just made that argument for the sake of argument and not because you sincerely believe I implied that.

Others will indeed like the content. What content do you propose that everyone, not just you, will like?

So you agree that we needed a shakeup after more than one year of only one side being catered too? Good.

And you have no basis to make a statement like “The general sentiment is clearly negative.” Unless you can poll all players, the burden of proof for saying something like that is on you.

Forums, comment sections and ingame chats don’t count even a tiny bit. Got it. You sound like every delusional game dev and apologist ever shortly before their downfall.

- Just because someone does not share your opinion, does not mean that that person is “one of the very few” who do.

Yes. And just because you dislike the criticism voiced against her story arc doesn’t make you not the minority.

- People who like what is going on have little reason to go post about it, which is why “I hate X” threads are more common than “I like X” threads.

That is true. People who like something don’t open “I like X” threads. You know what they do? They create fanworks and fanart, they use avatars and sig pictures of them (obviously in other forums), they show off their dedication to the character, or they, gasp, actively cite them as an example of a well written character in in-depth discussions.
And in terms of game content, they actually … discuss it. I see very little of that happening, Most is technical like bugs/rewards or general expressions of disappointment. But I see no strategy talk, no guides, no nothing. (The fast-food, throwaway nature of the individual subforums isn’t exactly conductive to that either)
Where is all of that with Scarlet/the LS? Saying numerous people love her but you can never know that because they don’t go out and express it is like saying that blue unicorns exist in your drawer. You can’t disprove either.

- Just because there is a Living Story, players are not forced to participate in it. Just go do your WvW or dungeon runs or guild missions as usual. If something annoys you, don’t expose yourself to it.

You realize that if LS is taken out of the equation, we don’t get any new content in PvE, right?

So please stop proclaiming: “I hate Scarlet, which means that everyone hates Scarlet, which means that Living Story is a failure, which means that I get to tell ArenaNet what to do.” Because even if the first thing is true, none of the others necessarily follow. Basic faulty logic.

It also does not mean that it doesn’t follow. Yours is the faulty logic. The general sentiment is clearly negative. The burden of proof is on you.

We are talking about a fictional character that may not be to everyone’s taste. Nobody should be fired over this. No planned releases should be changed over this.

Actually I do think people should be fired over delivering a year’s worth of a substandard content arc. Would you equate firing a writer who wrote a crap, antithetical season for a beloved TV series to starting a civil war as well?

Stressing: It’s just a fact that for most people there exists only one path of aesthetic progression, and associated prestige.
Why was it assumed that e.g. Nightmare armor would be regarded as the super leet skin in sPvP just because it has inhumane rank reqs, when it can be comfortably farmed out in PvE by a casual group in a weekend and is therefore dime a dozen to be found in LA?
The separation also meant that a player wo invested 95% of his time into sPvP but got bored and wanting to check out the other parts would suddenly be … nowhere in GW2, despite them being a regular GW2 player. They couldn’t participate in your Living Story updates without significant catching up — Ascended items are entirely out of their reach even — or WvW.
So they just quit, because the thought of starting over or eternally catching up to the rest of the game is too much for many.

Thinking your sPvPers want or need a complete separation was one of your grossest misjudgments of player (and human) nature.

I’m glad you’re finally switching tracks (mostly).

in PvP

Jamais vu.5284

…and then ask yourselves why you thought GW2 would be an exception?

Because they made GW1.

The problem with your post is that you’re assuming that we need to follow someone else. GW2 is perfectly placed as a pioneer because 1. it offers one of the best combat systems of all MMOs to date 2. it is graphically approachable 3. it is still one of the most popular AAA titles out there.

That, in itself, means that GW2 has the playerbase and the potential viewerbase to break into esports. All it needs is a fun and approachable gametype and more support from Arenanet to streamers and players alike.

GW2 doesn’t have to follow WoW. If GW2 could learn from one title, it would actually be LoL. If Arenanet had Riot’s PR ability and Riot’s focus on intuitive and approachable gameplay, they would already have succeeded as an “esport”. The term is all relative, however, but I believe GW2 players can be as popular as SC2 players if this was done from the beginning. LoL’s popularity is unapproachable for any modern MMO given its accessibility in all aspects, but GW2 can offer something else – the GvG.

Have you watched Ragnarok Online’s GvGs back in the day? Even on private servers in the later years, WPE, Nabz, Beastmode, Finale, CoT and more were all fantastic guilds in their relative primes. While a large GvG format may not make it as a monetary esport, it can bring so much attention to GW2’s competitive scene, enough to give Arenanet a platform to constantly improve and revamp their game like Riot is doing with LoL, and allow the game to go strong for a decade.

Edit: To add to this, WoW’s competitive games are boring as hell to the average spectator. MMOs need the “massive” component for it to be interesting. There is not enough interesting skill variety and skill level difference in MMOs and the camera angle does not do it any favours either. Perhaps a spectator camera angle should be implemented if the competitive scene ever does becomes popular.

^ Please don’t pay attention to that guy. ANet already tried to emulate LoL hard at every corner. It failed hard.

Thanks to the WvW team.

And if the winners got super awesome rewards season two would simply be: “Every single PvE:er stacks on the server that is most likely to win”, thus making it more or less impossible to get some sort of interesting matches and most people wouldn’t be able to play at all due to queues.

If you used your brain for a second you’d have come up yourself that the rewards don’t have to be hugely stratified by server ranking. They just need to be better overall.

Regarding gold rate, the rates chosen are based on what players can expect from average play in other areas of the game, not on farming rates.

What are “nomal” vs “farming” rates though? Is a very conservative 2g/hour per average in dungeons a “farming rate” of Gold acquisition? Or wouldn’t it be rather a standard rate for most players? Because that’s what most players do when they log in in PvE — instances, farming, or levelling alts. And levelling alts has a pathetically low pay-off even with very little expenses (only the trait tomes really), I hope you won’t go by that.
That would however mean that each and every sPvP match (let’s say the average is about 4.5/h matches if you play 1h without break) that you participated from start to end rewards about ~40s, which in turn seems a bit high.
WvW is maybe 1g/h with the most profitable venture there, a zerg train, but they do also get badges, their exclusive currency, and Ascended mats.
So either way you balance it, it’s kittened. It would be easier if you retain glory as additional currency, like said badges, or orient yourselves at mentioned dungeoneering rate, not some pathetically meager overworld alt-levelling rate of Gold acquisition. That would just be a slap in the face. No one will feel rewarded that way.
Another solution would be to give a reward chest containing a couple gold each day, emulating those from dungeons. However, I am of the opinion that daily reward chests are boring.

Would you keep rank acquisition the same as it is now?

If not, what would you do to improve rank acquisition?

Remove ranks as they currently are. Kill the grind meter with fire.
Replace it with a once-a-lifetime reward for progressing to a higher division. E.g. you progress to Dolyak/Silver/whatever division, you get a permanent Dolyak finisher and/or a silver cape. And of course a large reward chest.
Short-term rewards is gold and bouncy daily chests
Mid-term rewards is climbing higher in the ladder and achievements.
Long-term rewards is progressing to the next division, winning seasons, and getting a cool finisher/cape/unique PvP skin.
The latter two aren’t grindable and this would be great.

Keep in mind that most people who will reply to you on this are the vocal opponents to the move, while those who support the removal are merry in the “knowledge” that you’ll actually do it after they’ve read the news — even though that apparently isn’t set in stone yet.

The long-term goal will be to climb the ladder and place in higher divisions.

this goal is feasible for players who wishes to be competitive. you do realize that there are more casual players than competitive players yes?

You didn’t think this quite through I’m afraid to inform you.
There will probably be enough divisions that you wont chronically rank in some no-name percentile. Yes, you will be a rabbit or deer at first, but you can become Top 50.
Dominated a really high-ranking team? Have an instant jump 30 places. That is a reward I can get behind. Keep the sPvP seasons they proposed in mind too. You can be measured long-term by your results in past seasons.
Also, are they a permanent lifetime achievement? If yes, there’s your rank analogue. It’d be awesome if you earned a cape or finisher to show off for each division you once graduated into.

By contrast, for a casual player currently it’s almost unthinkable to achieve a rank 30+ after one year without resorting to the Skyhammer abuse.
What does rank mean to them I wonder? They certainly don’t have any prestige/boast value because they are so low. (They are also utterly interesting economically/AP-wise in case you wondered)
But with ladders, you can rank highly if your team plays really well with only a few matches a week, no giant time sink needed.
I find it a bit silly that you suggest the current ranks with a prohibitively high time-requirement to get anywhere are somehow more interesting to casual players than a segmented hotjoin/soloQ/teamQ rank triad.

as a bunch of people have already stated, why can’t the leaderboards and ranks/finishers just simply co-exist? my rank and finisher was the only thing i had to show for being a dedicated pvp player.

im not sure how replacing that with seasonal leaderboard rewards make for a better incentive to play in pvp. its population suggests that it’s not competitive at all, people have never cared about leaderboards in this game since it has been introduced and i’m not sure if they would care when it gets revamped either.

Because it’s needless fat that needs to be trimmed from the sPvP steak and it is conductive of a mindless, skill-less grind mentality that ANet at last seems to have realized is malignant to the game.
Where you might see some distant goalpost, having grindable ranks just is a Sisyphean carrot to me. I’m sure to some players that this is motivation-boosting but be cognizant that to some it has the exact opposite effect.

The long-term goal will be to climb the ladder and place in higher divisions.

Are there ever going to be utilities?

in PvP

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

Adding more utilities to the game is a great idea. Healing skills though? Why healing skills instead of utilities that could be creative and useful? Building other classes around the warriors healing signet instead of just nerfing healing signet sounds like what this is to me.

Because most utilities are boring and worthless and one more of them would be a drop in the bucket compared to a choice of one new healing skill? They’d need to create at least a batch of 4 new utilities per class to turn heads.
The healing skills are by far the most exciting choice you can make. Utilities are as I said mostly boring/useless with 1-2 so overwhelmingly more powerful than the rest that they are on everyone’s bar, Elites are a massive, universally disliked disappointment compared to the GW1 approach, and weapons are mostly chosen for you anyway. There’s always exactly 1 good melee set per build (of which there aren’t many viable), and exactly 1 good ranged set.
So that leaves heal skills, which together with traits shake up my playing style the most. A thief with Hide in Shadows plays completely different from one with Withdraw, for example.
But yeah, I hope together with the new skills they also rebalance the other 3 heal skills. Some classes need it dearly.

I can tell you this is hellish, to the point that I dont care what tags you or anybody else want to give to our fair complains. Server population IS a problem, a problem that plagues the already stomped servers.

My server is ranked among the highest populated servers in the game, in fact, as populated as Blackgate and TC on prime time, or so its says, yet, no temples open, dungeons, WvW population, people on maps, EVER, where are they?!, yes, Im in Gate of Madness, ranked 21/24 for the last few months, almost an entire year, which we got to be to rank 19. To add salt to the injury, because of this deceiving population threshold, transfering to our server costs also 1800. Why would anyone in their sane mind want to pay 1800 gems to transfer to a dead server?!*

And your new “toy” will only split up the already non-existent population in our server, JFYI, we sometimes have outmanned in EB at prime times…… in weekends. If those things arent an indicator of how bad it is, I seriously dont know what else is. Im tired, Im tired of it, I want solutions, WvW is probably one of the few things holding my interesting, but one-sided fights stop being fun after Anet also stomps us with juicy rewards which can only go to zerg-fest servers.

Collaborative Development: Commander System

in CDI

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

Most has been said. Don’t forget a second, commander-appointed tier like a squad captain/officer, who has access to limited functionality of the new features. It’s very important for for example ruins groups, camp groups, or defenders on different maps, who are all operating under one commander/raid. It would boost the level of organization and strategy possible in WvW tremendously.

Okay, so before we get too far into this discussion, here is something else to think about:
Would you rather see us make some number of small improvements in the short term and larger changes long term or just tear the whole thing down and start from scratch?

Tear it down and rework everything.

How often do people actually join squads and use the features that are there? (4 different way point markers, /supplyinfo). What would make you join squads more?

People often join when there is more than one com on the map, which is its only perk at the moment really, but how successful it currently is really shouldn’t be a gauge how successful a reworked system would be.
Only being able to join by manually targeting and right-clicking a commander character is prohibitive. Most people don’t even think of that. You should be able to join a squad directly from the Commander icon on the map and also from a sub-menu of available Commanders on the map that you will add to the LFG tool.

How much is spies a problem with commander system?

In 500+ hours of WvW I have never seen a spy influence anything. Whenever a commander who tried a stealthy approach was detected, it was usually due to scouts standing around.
You don’t have to include specific anti-spy measures, just give commanders the ability to hide their tag to non-squad members + squad kick. That will sort out (detected) spies. If you include specific anti-spy mechanics that would just cause paranoia as it’s suddenly seen as a greater issue than it really is.

Should we allow a WvW upgrade to see enemy commanders (not on the map just on screen) ?

If you mean the current little icon, that would not change anything because it’s extremely hard to see.
If you mean more visibly than now, like the blue taco, this would lead to a meta where the whole zerg tries to focus fire down the commander on first contact. It might be interesting, like Chess where the zerg has to protect their commander (King) while pushing for the enemy one, but it needs thorough testing to see if it’s compatible with the actual GW2 combat mechanics.
Best is if you test it large-scale in the (current or upcoming ones) invitee WvW betas.
If you include one it would have to be very, very far down a trait tree.

Also to the people who say commanders would just run tagless: Yes some would, but then they also would lose access to all the new features we are talking about in this thread.

It really does seem weird if you can just buy levels and dungeon armor/wep skins because the PvP vendor sells it for some lump sum. It would get abused to hell and back by non-PvPers.
You could make it that gold earned in PvP can only flow out of it, but not flow in, meaning you can buy, with the gold you earn in a sPvP match, level tomes as well as Mithril Ore in the TP, but you can’t buy a level tome or dungeon skin from the PvP vendor with the gold you earned from PvE farming, though I can imagine a host of problems with that.
They could also retain glory for some special items like those above, make it relatively rare and valuable like laurels.

As for armor “exclusivity” itself … please don’t turn this topic into another silly Flame Kissed fiasco. No one cares about your “prestige”. People just want to look pretty.
As long as you used a reasonable amount of effort/resources in either sPvP or PvE to procure the skin in question, I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to use it in both.
You can’t defend that you’d have to literally grind for YEARS under the old system to be able to use cultural armor in sPvP. Also note the “grind”. It doesn’t say anything about your skill, only how much you time you wasted in GW2 to grind.

What can us WvWers buy to help support WvW?

-Every server community submits an official server flag/logo/mascot proposal
-Gets voted on Evon-like
-You can buy little flags for the Toy slot, finishers with the flag/logo, and mascot minipets in the Gemstore

Server pride is by far the biggest untapped WvW market.

Not half-hearted. Those are bold changes and I love it.
Legitimately kudos.

Is TPVP dead?

Arena.net would be really stupid if it used most of its resources to fix spvp. Yeah, that seems a good plan, let’s put money in pvp so we can try to lure some pvper’s back, players that had lost our trust. So maybe we can have a decent playerbase and maybe we can become an esport and maybe get some of the money invested in fixing spvp back…
Or they could release more pve content and make money. A hard choice as you can see..

And by the way there is rewards in spvp, and pve players farmed a lot of those rewads, achievements and ranks, and they didn’t become spvp players did they ? Yeah, that’s the thing, most pve players don’t like pvp, it’s trying to feed meat to a rabbit, it doesn’t work.

There is no way this game will be anything more than a sidekick for pve, get over with it, if u invested a lot of time in this, well man, kitten happens in life and it could be a lot worse.

They are probably scared of that scenario, so they don’t dedicate more resources to it, thinking it’d be a black hole anyway. It’s a vicious circle. Which is why the right approach to PvP reform isn’t a gradual improvement process spread over years, but a loudly and widely broadcasted revolution of this whole aspect of the game. This is the only way how they could hope to rebuild trust. Not just with hardcore PvPers, who “have left anyway”, but even within your (more casual) community that is still actually playing.
Me for example, someone who is still relatively active in a different domain of the game (WvW), has lost every single scrap of trust I had in ANet to deliver an engaging sPvP experience, not for ideological reasons, I simply don’t mentally care anymore. I’m visiting these subforums on a monthly basis, let alone keep updated about PvP-centric news. Some very gradual, specific improvements and additions just fly over people’s heads.

You need oomph. You need publicity. A grand re-release just works. Final Fantasy and tons of other MMO got successfully re-released after much criticism and disappointing numbers. We just need something like that for the PvP-side of things with GW2.

Would you like class-specific rank abilities?

This is a great idea if you balance the traits against the (by design static) profession metas. I.e., everyone but warriors and guardians would get palpably better traits than the latter two to make them more desirable on the battlefield, especially the two most forsaken professions engineer and ranger.
As long as it doesn’t provide combat advantages but instead only interacts with WvW mechanics (i.e., very basic example, a thief being able to steal a supply). It would actually be pretty exciting if engineers were truly the best, well, siege engineers.

They will never do it because it makes some people feel “excluded”. You’d get told to go away if you try to blob-up a smallscale group.

Yes, those wittle feewings trump everything else, even if due to that they won’t implement mechanics to reduce the mindless zone blobbing that is ruining the game. Disgusting.

WvW can't be taken seriously for 1 reason.

The solutions are easy and I personally could implement the coding change in a weeks time. (I’m giving myself 39 hours padding!)

Given this problem is so easy to fix yet isn’t makes a person wonder what the problem could be.

Said everyone with an inflated ego ever.

Thaumanova will be just the same – more golems cat-eared or not, automated security systems, complicated control consoles, hi-fi speaker systems, power fluxes and of course a crapton of Inquest goons.

Whudda thunk it?
But it saves them the trouble of actually creating such things like new textures or enemy models. Thanks to Ellen they could recycle every single asset. She was the real economical mastermind here, not Evon Gnashblade.

This has nothing to do with “country alliances”. This has to do with points. A tower that Jade Sea gets against Baruch is worth double the PPT than if Vizunah held it themselves.
You’re pretty bad at analyzing things OP.

I suggested a couple weeks back that the way to include the LS updates in WvW would be, for example, to switch some actually relevant NPCs like camp guards or keep lords for LS enemies, to shake things up.
Of course, in best ANet tradition they took a nice basic concept (more LS integration of WvW) and executed it in the worst way possible, polluting WvW with mobs and events no one cares about except in one way: annoyance.

Seeing as how the game has been out for so long and it doesn’t take THAT long to level to 80, people got the memo that you don’t need that much skill to not die being a Warrior/Guard.

Are you saying you need “skill” to survive a zerg fight? As any class?
Seriously?

Lets be honest here, I’ve played GW 1 for 5 years, I remember when factions came people were infatuated with Assassin new class mechanics techniques new builds. So why 1 year plus nothing new yet? A solid look as implementing a healer type class to the game will counter condi builds and necro spammer condis clueless. I remember Gw 1 took 2 solid healers to keep the team alive rotating to diff positions why not implement that now?

Because why?
